In this editi on of VUYK TODAY, we proudly present our new corporate identi ty; the result of Vuyk’s journey over the past decades. This magazine takes you on this journey by highlighti ng some of our projects. We will show you our new and extended market propositi on, and you can learn more about our vision for the future development of our partnership with you.

“Traditi onally, Vuyk has been known for its vessel design,” says Marc Oele, Managing Director at Vuyk. “This was refl ected in our logo with the bow waves. Throughout the years though, we have also gained valuable knowledge and experti se in marine operati ons engineering and equipment design, and therefore we felt that our old logo no longer represented our full range of capabiliti es. Our new one incorporates the evoluti on of Vuyk and its current positi on in the market. The new identi ty focuses more on our strong brand name and our relati onship with our holding company, Royal IHC. This alliance off ers new possibiliti es.”

“In recent years, we have witnessed an increasing demand for services that go beyond consultancy, design and engineering,” says Marc. “This can range from an equipment package up to building a turnkey vessel. At Vuyk, we weren’t able to provide these kinds of services, but they are widely available within the IHC group. From now on, we can off er our customers the opti on to seamlessly ti e in our services with those of IHC.”

Dave Vander Heyde, CEO at IHC, says: “IHC is rapidly transforming from a Dutch group of shipyards into an internati onal all-round service provider and (integrated) equipment and vessel supplier. The positi on of Vuyk in this strategy is to conti nue serving customers independently at any stage of the life-cycle of products with tailored consultancy, feasibility studies, concept development, basic designs and operati onal engineering.”

Marc adds: "The strength of this propositi on is that customers conti nue to have access to the knowledge and experience that Vuyk has gained over the years and they also have the opti on to combine Vuyk’s services with other services available within IHC - from complete delivery of resulti ng equipment up to fully integrated ships.”

“This new propositi on doesn’t take away Vuyk’s independency,” assures Dave Vander Heyde. “Vuyk has been part of IHC since 2008 and although some customers had initi al concerns about its independency aft er the acquisiti on, I am sure we have shown throughout the years that Vuyk remains as independent as ever. With the broad spectrum of markets Vuyk operates in – integrati ng marine operati ons engineering, ship design and equipment design – they have conti nued to help customers realise new ideas, vessels and equipment, and will conti nue to do so.

“IHC recognises that highly complex and tailored designs, such as the ones Vuyk creates with and for its customers, require a high level of confi denti ality,” he conti nues. “Any design that Vuyk makes is a one-off , providing soluti ons to a customer’s specifi c needs. We fully respect their property rights and customers can sti ll opt to build a Vuyk design at a third-party yard. However, within IHC we are determined to come up with the best proposal for a larger package than the Vuyk design only.”

LET US TAKE YOU ON OUR JOURNEYWhen Vuyk was established in 1979, it mainly focused on detailed engineering of cargo ships and dredgers. Over the past decades we have evolved into a design, engineering and consultancy offi ce with experti se in various industries; dredging, off shore and heavy lift , renewables and civil. Although our work has changed signifi cantly throughout the years, one constant remains: we design to functi on and in order to do so, we work closely together with our customers.

MATADOR 3 2005“ARE THEY SHIPS OR BUILDINGS?”

VUYK ADVISED THE DUTCH RIJKSGEBOUWENDIENST ON THE REQUIREMENTS FOR TWO FLOATING PRISONS WITH REGARD TO THE MARITIME ASPECTS OF LOADS AND (DAMAGE) STABILITY, AND LINKING THESE TO BUILDINGS LEGISLATION.

2005VUYK LENGTHENED THE QUEEN OF THE NETHERLANDS BY MORE THAN 35%, MAKING IT ONE OF THE LARGEST HOPPER DREDGERS AROUND.

2002BY 2002 VUYK HAD ALREADY BECOME INVOLVED IN OFFSHORE WIND PROJECTS, ASSISTING MAMMOET VAN OORD WITH SEAFASTENING SUPPORTS FOR THE ARKLOW BANK AND SCROBY SANDS WIND FARM PROJECTS.

2005LIFTING ANALYSIS, WORKABILITY AND DESIGN OF TEMPORARY BUMPERS FOR THE INSTALLATION OF AN OFFSHORE WIND SUBSTATION. THIS WAS PARTICULARLY VALUABLE AS VUYK HAD ALSO DESIGNED THE MATADOR 3.

2000VUYK CREATED THE CONCEPT AND BASIC DESIGN FOR THE 1,500t SEAGOING FLOATING SHEERLEGS MATADOR 3 FOR BONN & MEES. THIS WAS ONE OF OUR FIRST INTEGRATED DESIGNS: WE PRODUCED THE MECHANICAL AND STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF THE SHEERLEGS’ A-FRAME, JIB AND THE COMPLETE HULL DESIGN. THE DESIGN OF THE A-FRAME WAS SUPPORTED BY IN-HOUSE ANSYS FEM CALCULATIONS. IN ADDITION TO THE SHIPBUILDING AND MECHANICAL DESIGN FOR THE HULL AND SHEERLEGS STRUCTURE, VUYK ALSO SUPERVISED THE CONSTRUCTION.

CREATE GREAT THINGS" AT VUYK, WE ASSIST BUSINESSES IN THE

DREDGING, OFFSHORE AND HEAVY LIFT INDUSTRIES TO TURN INNOVATIVE OPERATIONAL IDEAS INTO REAL VESSELS, EQUIPMENT AND MARINE OPERATIONS”. Kuno van den Berg

Engineers and draughtsmen have a long history with vuyk and have a high level of experience in basic design of ships, mechanical structures, engineroom layout and marine system design.

In 5 years time Vuyk has almost tripled in number of engineers. Apart from a growth in exible workforce of draughtsmen the growth is achieved by attracting BSc and MSc level engineers specialising in complex design calculations.

GERT-JAN SCHOUTEN, Designer-Draughtsman During my 20-year career at Vuyk, the quality of structural plans has always been the highest priority, which is a great motivator for me.

PIONEERINGSPIRIT

2006VUYK WAS CONTRACTED BY ALLSEAS TO ASSIST IN THE STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF THE DECOMMISSIONING VESSEL, PIONEERING SPIRIT. THE MAIN CHALLENGE IN THIS EXCITING PROJECT WAS DEVELOPING A STRUCTURAL DESIGN METHOD SUITABLE FOR THIS EXTRAORDINARILY LARGE AND UNCOMMONLY SHAPED VESSEL TOGETHER WITH LLOYD’S REGISTER, AS EXISTING RULES WERE NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE VESSEL.

THIS FURTHER STRENGTHENED VUYK’S EXPERTISE IN GLOBAL AND DETAILED CALCULATION METHODS FOR WAVE LOADS (3D DIFFRACTION AQWA), BENDING FATIGUE, TYPICAL PROBLEMS WITH THICK PLATES, HIGH-STRENGTH MATERIALS AND DESIGN OF STRUCTURAL DETAILS TO SOLVE PROBLEMS IN HIGHLY LOADED AREAS (FEM).

IN THIS PERIOD, VUYK ALSO DETERMINED THE FULL SCANTLINGS FOR THE HULL AND DECKHOUSES AND PERFORMED MECHANICAL ENGINEERING WORK FOR THE STINGER TRANSITION FRAME AND HULL CONNECTION BEAMS.

VUYK PRODUCED THE COMPLETE BASIC DESIGN OF THE VESSEL AND THE CONCEPT, AS WELL AS THE DETAILED MECHANICAL DESIGN OF THE FALL PIPE AND HANDLING SYSTEM. THIS INTEGRATED DESIGN WAS A LANDMARK DEVELOPMENT FOR VUYK. FALL PIPE SYSTEMS OF THIS SCALE AND AUTOMATION WERE NEW TO VUYK AND THE CUSTOMER. THE REQUIREMENTS WERE SUCH THAT THE DESIGN COULD NOT BE ACHIEVED BY SIMPLY SCALING UP SMALLER SYSTEMS.

2010-2011THANKS TO THE KNOWLEDGE VUYK HAD GAINED IN THE FIELDS OF (MULTI-AXIS) STABILITY, MOTION BEHAVIOUR AND STRUCTURAL DESIGN FROM A VARIETY OF PROJECTS, AND THE AVAILABLE SOFTWARE IN-HOUSE, A CONCEPT FOR A SEMI-SUBMERSIBLE ACCOMMODATION PLATFORM WAS ADDED TO ITS PORTFOLIO. THE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SHAPE COMPARED TO A MONOHULL; I.E. A DOUBLE HULL, SUBMERGED, REQUIRES IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE OF THE ABOVE-MENTIONED ASPECTS IN ORDER TO DESIGN SUCH A VESSEL.

THE VERSATILE MULTI-PURPOSE DESIGN HAS 2X300t CRANES AND IS CAPABLE OF BEING DEPLOYED ACROSS A NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS, RANGING FROM OFFSHORE OIL AND GAS SUPPORT FACILITIES, TO STANDALONE PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES.

2009VUYK TURNED GREEN AND DEVELOPED TWO PLUG-IN HYBRID ELECTRIC-POWERED TRANSPORT BARGES FOR THE CITY OF UTRECHT. THE VESSELS ARE USED IN THE NARROW CITY CANALS AND COMBINE MAXIMISED DIMENSIONS, VOLUME AND CARRYING CAPACITY WITH THE SMALLEST POSSIBLE ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT (NOISE, EXHAUST GAS AND CO2 PRODUCTION). ANOTHER ECO-FRIENDLY DEVELOPMENT CAME IN 2011, WHEN VUYK PERFORMED A STUDY INTO THE FEASIBILITY OF USING LNG ON A HOPPER DREDGER.

2012 CABLE LAY SPREADVUYK COMPLETED THE BASIC AND DETAILED DESIGN OF A CABLELAY SPREAD INCLUDING INTEGRATION ON THE HAM 602. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME A COMPLETE CABLELAY EQUIPMENT SPREAD DESIGN WAS MADE BY VUYK UP TO THE DETAILS OF BEARINGS, DRIVES, ETC. IT DEMONSTRATED VUYK’S INCREASED CAPABILITIES IN MECHANICAL DESIGN.

2010VUYK CREATED THE FULL BASIC DESIGN OF THE HULL AND CRANES FOR THE 4,000t CRANE VESSEL FOR SCALDIS, WHICH IS BUILT BY IHC.

VESSEL AND MECHANICAL DESIGN WERE COMBINED IN-HOUSE WITH MARINE OPERATIONS THROUGH DYNAMIC LIFTING ANALYSIS USED TO DETERMINE THE DESIGN LOADS ON THE CRANES.

2010VUYK ASSISTED SEAJACKS WITH THE COMPLETE PROJECT ENGINEERING FOR THE INSTALLATION OF THE WIND TURBINE GENERATORS (WTG's) OF THE WALNEY II OFFSHORE WIND FARM.

2012BASED ON OBSERVATIONS FROM SEVERAL MARINE OPERATIONS ENGINEERING PROJECTS IN OFFSHORE WIND IN THE PREVIOUS DECADE, VUYK DEVELOPED ITS FIRST IHC PRODUCT: A BLADE HANDLING TOOL. THIS IMPROVES THE INSTALLATION WINDOW FOR OFFSHORE WIND TURBINES. THE PATENTED TOOL MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO INSTALL A BLADE UNDER A 60° ANGLE AND CREATES A HIGHER LEVEL OF CONTROL THROUGH THE CONNECTION WITH THE CRANE BOOM. CURRENTLY, THE TOOL IS AVAILABLE FROM IHC IQIP.

VENICE STORM

“Great ideas are everywhere, but they are futile until they are turned into actions. When that happens, they can really make a difference. At Vuyk, we assist businesses in the dredging, offshore and heavy lift industries to turn innovative operational ideas into real vessels, equipment and marine operations,” says Commercial Manager Kuno van den Berg. “By doing so we help them to stay at the forefront of the market.”

Engineering Manager Erwin Put adds: “We all have a passion for technology and design, and we sure love a challenge. Throughout our history we have always taken on the most challenging of projects. For example, between 2007 and 2010 we helped the Jan De Nul Group to develop a fall pipe module that offers fully automated, large capacity rock dumping with a high degree of accuracy up to 2,000 metres. At that time a maximum operational depth of 1,000 metres was the standard.”

Kuno adds: “Another example of the way we help our customers realise their ambitions is the project we did for Allseas. In 2005 the offshore contractor approached us to help them realise their industry-changing idea for a twin-bow platform removal and pipelay vessel. We assisted them with the global hull analysis, including definition of the design waves, and advised on structural modifications where applicable. Over the past few years, this scope has expanded to the design of the stinger transition frame and hull connection beam. We are very proud to have been part of this game-changing development and there is nothing more satisfying than seeing the end product fulfil its tasks successfully.”

SURGE BARRIER INSTALLATION

2012VUYK’S CIVIL ENGINEERING ACTIVITIES WERE DISPLAYED AGAIN BY THE MARINE OPERATIONS ENGINEERING, SHIPBUILDING DESIGN AND MECHANICAL ENGINEERING FOR THE INSTALLATION OF THE STORM SURGE BARRIER IN THE VENICE ESTUARY.

IN THIS PROJECT, THE ORIGINAL FOCUS WAS ON THE INSTALLATION WORKABILITY OF THE CAISSONS SUPPORTED BY AQWA AND ORCAFLEX CALCULATIONS. HOWEVER, VUYK ALSO DESIGNED THE INSTALLATION LIFT BARGE FOR THE CAISSONS AND MAXIMISED THE WORKABILITY FOR THE CRITICAL INSTALLATION WORK. THIS PROJECT AGAIN SHOWED THE SYNERGY OF VESSEL AND EQUIPMENT DESIGN AND MARINE OPERATIONS ENGINEERING IN-HOUSE.

INTEGRATED DESIGNSVuyk is highly specialised in work vessels and their equipment for the dredging and off shore industries, as well as heavy transport and lift vessels. “Aside from the design of new vessels or modifi cati ons and conversions, we also have broad experience in marine operati ons through delivering engineering soluti ons for installati on and abandonment operati ons, transport, load-outs and heavy lift up to salvage assistance,” explains Erwin. “By combining our experti se in vessel and equipment design, and marine operati ons, we know exactly what it takes for equipment and ships to perform operati ons at sea. Therefore, we can supply you with a perfectly integrated design.”

The company is also committ ed to creati vity and the ability to understand and translate its customers’ wishes into solid, functi onal designs. “We work in close co-operati on with our customers since we focus on tailor-made soluti ons,” says Kuno. “We have a fi rst-ti me right mentality and will go that extra mile to rise to our customers’ challenges. No matt er how complicated and no matt er what it takes, we will come up with a soluti on that simply works. Being part of the IHC group makes it possible to deliver even more services when required, from in-depth research to manufacturing our designs.”

PARTNERSHIPSPushing the boundaries of existi ng standards requires a true team eff ort”, says Erwin. “We have always been growing with our customers, developing new techniques and learning from one another’s experti se. We are fl exible, responsive, reliable, and have a sound basis of practi cality.”

According to Kuno, trust, cooperati on and sharing knowledge are the only means towards further development. “We are always open to any suggesti ons and ideas to expand our range of services and make them even bett er in partnership with our customers.”

Besides design and build, we can now also o er expanded and cheaper detail design services through our IHC collegues in Croatia and Malaysia. This is a possibility that we will certainly expand further in the near future.
