Welcome Everyone! Welcome to All Saints’ Parish Church Family Eucharist on the last Sunday in

Eastertide.

On Thursday this week, we celebrated the glorious ascension of Jesus into

heaven with a special service at 6.00pm. Thank you if you were able to join

us on Facebook Live to celebrate together.

Between Ascension Day and Pentecost, we are invited to pray for five people:

family members or friends to know the love and pace of Jesus and to pray

the Lord’s Prayer each day.

As we wait to celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost next Sunday,

we thank God for these ten days of focussed prayers for our community

during the challenges and pain of our current situation. We have been

promised that we are never alone or abandoned. God is faithful to his

promises.

God’s blessing upon you as we worship together.

Vicar of All Saints’ Parish Church, Streetly

Hymn

Rejoice, the Lord is King! Your Lord and King adore; mortals, give thanks and sing, and triumph evermore. Refrain: Lift up your heart, lift up your voice; rejoice, again I say, rejoice. Jesus the Saviour reigns, the God of truth and love; when he had purged our stains, he took his seat above. (Refrain) His Kingdom cannot fail; he rules o’er earth and heav’n; the keys of death and hell are to our Jesus giv’n. (Refrain) He sits at God’s right hand till all his foes submit, and bow to his command, and fall beneath his feet. (Refrain)

Welcome President: The light and peace of Jesus Christ be with you All: and also with you. The glory of the Lord has risen upon us. All: Let us rejoice and sing God’s praise for ever.

Opening Prayer Almighty God,

your Son has opened for us a new and living way into your presence. Give us new hearts and constant wills to worship you in spirit and in truth; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

All: Amen.

Saying Sorry to God Please sit or kneel.

Jesus Christ, risen Master and triumphant Lord, we come to you in sorrow for our sins, and confess to you our weakness and unbelief. We have lived by our own strength, and not by the power of your resurrection. In your mercy, forgive us.

All: Lord, hear us and help us.

We have lived by the light of our own eyes, as faithless and not believing. In your mercy, forgive us. All: Lord, hear us and help us. We have lived for this world alone, and doubted our home in heaven. In your mercy, forgive us. All: Lord, hear us and help us. President: May the God of love

bring us back to himself, forgive us our sins, and assure us of his eternal love in Jesus Christ, our Lord.

All: Amen.

Prayer for the Day - The Collect

Risen, ascended Lord, as we rejoice at your triumph, fill your Church on earth with power and compassion, that all who are estranged by sin may find forgiveness and know your peace, to the glory of God, the Father.

All: Amen.

Hymn

Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by your name: You are mine. When you walk through the waters, I’ll be with you, You will never sink beneath the waves. Do not be afraid…. When the fire is burning all around you, you will never be consumed by the flames. Do not be afraid….. When the fear of loneliness is looming, then remember I am at your side. Do not be afraid…… When you dwell in the exile of the stranger, remember you are precious in my eyes. Do not be afraid….. You are mine, O my child, I am your Father, and I love you with a perfect love. Do not be afraid……

Gospel Reading

Alleluia, alleluia! Hear the Gospel of our Lord, Jesus Christ, according to John. All: Glory to you, O Lord. 17 After Jesus had spoken these words, he looked up to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you, 2 since you have given him authority over all people, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. 3 And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. 4 I glorified you on earth by finishing the work that you gave me to do. 5 So now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had in your presence before the world existed.

6 “I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7 Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; 8 for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. 9 I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. 10 All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. 11 And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one.

John 17.1-11

At the end of the Gospel reading:

This is the Gospel of the Lord. All: Praise to you, O Christ.

Talk

In today’s gospel, we see Jesus at prayer. His will and his total direction are aligned to God the Father’s. Jesus is ready to be the human person in whom God’s glory will be perfectly shown through the outpouring of love on the cross.

In an extraordinary paradox, the nails of rejection and ultimate insult are allowed to fasten his body into the classic position of welcome and acceptance – arms outstretched.

Jesus’ written accusation means that he is given his title to die under, mocked and despised.

This is glory. This shows the length to which perfect love will go; the innocent one taking all the sins of the world; accepting their pain without complaint or retaliation; offering us all transformation and freedom. A new life.

The church is nearing the ending of Eastertide as we approach Pentecost. The disciples were nearing their understanding of who Jesus was. Having gone through death and accomplished his work on earth, Jesus’ risen life will take him out of this world in one sense but only in order to be right in the centre of faithful lives across the world.

Just as the angels at the tomb asked the disciples why were they looking for Jesus in the place of death, when he was alive, so now, as Jesus is hidden from their sight and returns to heaven, the angels ask the disciples why they are peering up into heaven.

Sometimes we can get too bogged down on the technical details, which do not actually matter. What does matter is that Jesus hasn’t gone away and left us, but is going to be with us and in us, as we make ourselves increasingly available for his loving service.

Amen.

Let us declare our faith

Let us declare our faith in the resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

All: Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures; he was buried; he was raised to life on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures; afterwards he appeared to his followers, and to all the apostles: this we have received, and this we believe.

cf 1 Corinthians 15.3-7

The Eucharistic Prayer

The Lord is here. All: His Spirit is with us.

Lift up your hearts. All: We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All: It is right to give thanks and praise.

It is right to praise you, Father, Lord of all creation; in your love you made us for yourself. When we turned away you did not reject us, but came to meet us in your Son.

All: You embraced us as your children and welcomed us to sit and eat with you.

In Christ, you shared our life that we might live in him and he in us.

All: He opened his arms of love upon the cross and made for all the perfect sacrifice for sin.

On the night he was betrayed, at supper with his friends he took bread, and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to them, saying: ‘Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.’

All: Father, we do this in remembrance of him: his body is the bread of life.

At the end of supper, taking the cup of wine, he gave you thanks, and said: ‘Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins; do this in remembrance of me.’

All: Father, we do this in remembrance of him: his blood is shed for all.

As we proclaim his death and celebrate his rising in glory, send your Holy Spirit that this bread and this wine may be to us the body and blood of your dear Son.

All: As we eat and drink these holy gifts, make us one in Christ, our risen Lord. With your whole Church throughout the world, we offer you this sacrifice of praise and lift our voice to join the eternal song of heaven:

All: Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of power and might: Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

The Lord’s Prayer Please sit or kneel.

As our Saviour taught us, so we pray: All: Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

Breaking of the bread

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.

All: Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

Giving of Communion The president says the invitation to communion.

God’s holy gifts for God’s holy people. All: Jesus Christ is holy, Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God, the Father.

The Body of Christ. Amen. The Blood of Christ. Amen.

All: Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits you have given me, for all the pains and insults you have borne for me. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother, may I know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen.

Prayer after Communion

Eternal God, giver of love and power, your Son Jesus Christ has sent us into all the world to preach the gospel of his kingdom: confirm us in this mission, and help us to live the good news we proclaim; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

Hymn

Christ triumphant, ever reigning, Saviour, Master, King. Lord of heav’n, our lives sustaining, hear us as we sing: Refrain: Yours the glory and the crown, the high renown, the eternal flame. Word incarnate, truth revealing, Son of Man on earth! Pow’r and majesty concealing by your humble birth: (Refrain) Suff’ring servant, scorned, ill-treated, victim crucified! Death is through the cross defeated, sinners justified: (Refrain) Priestly King, enthroned for ever high in heav’n above! Sin and death and hell shall never stifle hymns of love: (Refrain) So, our hearts and voices raising through the ages long, ceaselessly upon you gazing, this shall be our song: (Refrain)
