Virtual Sunday Services...

Jun.

Jun.

11:15 Virtual Service: "Stress Cracks” Rev. Kendyl Gibbons

The death of Ahmaud Arbery, and the ongoing statistical evidence that African Americans are more likely to die of COVID 19 than their white neighbors, remind us yet again that there is a structural flaw at the heart of American culture. A crisis like the current pandemic will inevitably reveal these fractures in our common life. Yes, we are all worried and under pressure, but this is no time to give up on better justice. Today we observe the traditional celebration of Juneteenth in the black community. We will share joys and concerns in the last part of this service.

11:15 Virtual Service: “Your Best Life” Rev. Kendyl Gibbons

As our high school graduates move forward into a changed cultural landscape, Oprah and others have made popular the concept of “living your best life.” Does that mean kale smoothies and exotic travel destinations, or might the classic philosophers have some wisdom to offer on the subject? Who wants to be a little princess? This will be our final opportunity to support the Religious Education program for young people for this fiscal year.

11:15 Virtual Service: “Legacies” Rev. Kendyl Gibbons

To be a father is to become the carrier of a legacy, and to have a father is to be the recipient of a legacy -- some good, some not so helpful. A crisis like the current pandemic makes it easy to be captured by the immediate and urgent, perhaps at the expense of what is more important over the long term. What is it that we want to preserve for the next generation who will inherit this world -- whether or not they are our own offspring?

The Odyssey has been postponed for the month of June.

11:15 Virtual Service: "Rooted, Inspired, and Ready” Worship from GA 2020 Rev. Joan Javier-Duval will deliver the sermon at the live stream 2020 General Assembly Sunday Morning Worship. The daughter of immigrants from the Philippines, she serves as Minister of the Unitarian Church of Montpelier, VT. Beauty, gratitude, and love are at the heart of her faithful striving for collective liberation and a thriving planet.

Join the 2020 GA Virtual Choir

For many, singing in the choir is a key part of coming together as UUs at General Assembly. This year, instead of joining our voices in person, let’s join our voices in a virtual choir! Each singer will record a video of themselves singing, and those individual videos will be edited into one glorious combined video to be premiered during GA’s Sunday Morning worship service.

Can’t imagine how it will work? Here’s an example (CLICK HERE) from the NYC Virtual Choir and Orchestra, featuring Adam Podd, Director of Music at First Unitarian Congregational Society of Brooklyn.

GA Music Coordinator Benjie Messer ([email protected]) will direct the 2020 GA Choir. Two optional rehearsals will be held on Zoom:

· Thursday, May 28 at 7 p.m. Eastern / 4 p.m. Pacific · Tuesday, June 2 at 2 p.m. Eastern / 11 a.m. Pacific

These rehearsals will allow singers to see each other, listen to their parts, sing along, and ask questions. Links to those rehearsals will be emailed soon to all interested singers, along with sheet music, backing tracks, and instructions for recording yourself. Final videos will be due on Friday, June 5.

If you are registered for GA and would like to join the virtual choir, please register ($15) here: http://bit.ly/GA2020choir

If you were previously registered for the 2020 choir, you need only contact Benjie at [email protected] with your name and voice part to confirm your participation. We look forward to hearing you sing!

W e are going to need your help to create our online worship for next year. Are your roses flourishing?

Is your balcony tomato plant doing well this year? Perhaps your neighbor’s irises are amazing, or the

trees in the park near you are fifty shades of green. Get out your cell phone, and snap a picture or

two. At our service in October, we will share our favorite gardens of the seasons, so capture the

beauty when you notice it any time this summer.

In the same spirit, for the Ingathering service in September, we will create a sequence of pictures of our favorite

bodies of water. Maybe that is a view of Brush Creek, or the rain splashing on your driveway, or the kiddie pool in

your backyard. Maybe it is an old picture from the beach, or the river where you like to camp. It could be the

fountain on Ward Parkway, or even the boiling pot you are about to make spaghetti in. Once again, take a digital

picture, and send it to Anthony, with some information for a caption -- where is it, when did you take it, what makes that water special?

Everyone can help to keep our Sunday mornings creative and fresh during the coming year.

As this remarkable program year draws to a close here at All Souls, we are starting to find the time to draw a deep breath, and reflect on the

changes that we have encountered, and the challenges that we have dealt with. The corona virus crisis has necessitated our physical separation

from each other, and that makes the person to person connections of community that we both cherished and took for granted, more precious and

meaningful, but also less easy to access.

Our board and our staff have agreed to accept the current recommendation from the UUA, to plan for online gatherings only, throughout the

coming program year, until the end of May, 2021. We want to protect the health of our vulnerable and older members, as well as contribute to the

public health of our community. So our church building will most likely be closed to large groups and the public for the year, but we will do

everything we can to ensure that our church community continues to thrive. Of course, as circumstances change, we will seek to remain flexible

and prudent, gathering and connecting in whatever ways are found to be safe.

I want to end this year by expressing my deep appreciation for the staff and volunteers who have made our instantaneous transition to online

worship and meetings possible. Our intrepid tech crew, including Anthony Edwards, Mark Gibbons, Andrea Jonson, and Angie Jennings, has been

outstandingly competent and tireless in producing Sunday programs that are creative, meaningful, and technically seamless. Our choir section

leaders have gamely supported our music with hymns and solos for all occasions. Our readers, ably organized by Marli Murphy while Ruth

Robarge recovers from her car accident, have quickly learned how to produce video recordings of themselves. Anthony and I have turned parts

of our homes into recording and production studios. None of us could have done this work alone.

I am also grateful to our staff members, who are functioning largely from our home offices, but also venture out to our building regularly, both to

keep it inhabited and to do work, like collecting the mail and printing checks, that can only be done on site. Our Director of Religious Education,

Judith Cady, with the help of Melanie Jackel continues to offer online lessons and activities for our children, and connections for our teens.

Judith has also dedicated much time to making phone calls to keep in touch with parents, families, and many other members. Our Administrator,

Le Aúndra Salazar-Slaughter, worked intensely with Treasurer Julie Koehler, Human Resources chair Evelyn Maddox, and Board president Andrea

Jonson to secure a PPP loan to ensure staff salaries for the current year, and to provide the documentation that will allow that loan to be turned

into a grant. This makes a huge difference as we look ahead to the uncertainties of the year to come. Sherry Anspach is doing a tremendous job

of getting all our changes of plans and news out promptly in the Flicker, and Angie is keeping our Facebook presence updated, and our membership

connections vibrant.

Finally, I am hugely grateful for our incredibly caring and competent volunteer leadership on the board of trustees. Both President Andrea Jonson

and Vice President Russell Feldhausen have brought technical expertise in online gathering and communication, along with cheerful good sense

and unflagging commitment to our community and its mission. New and continuing board members are dedicated to our values, and our ministry

to one another and to the larger community. The coming year is sure to bring even more challenges and changes; the good news is that none of

us is facing them alone, and by working together, we can grow stronger, kinder, and wiser through these difficult times.

Stay Safe, Religious Education Programs for All Souls families...

Rev. Judith Cady

Religious Education Programs for All Souls Families

Middle School and High School Youth

We believe that it is so important for our youth to remain connected with their friends while the church is closed due to the coronavirus. We have set up a google group for this purpose: “Google Hangout, All Souls KC Youth RE.” All of our youth have been invited to join the group. The group will meet with a video connec-

tion at 12:30 pm every Sunday. Our RE teen teachers will facilitate the group to share joys and concerns

Religious Education Programs for All Souls Families Preschool-Elementary Children

Reverend Judith Cady and Melanie Jackel are working on Sunday school lessons for you All Souls’ parents to share with your child(ren) until the church reopens. We have decided to work from a UU curriculum, Free to Believe, that was created to nurture the emotional, social, and spiritual life of children. We will be using the Unitarian Universalist principles as starting points for exploring values, beliefs, and what it means to be Unitarian Universalist.

Expect to see an email from Melanie ([email protected]) each week with the lesson. At church, we have different lessons for each grade grouping. However, as we attempt virtual Sunday school, we are offering a single lesson each week that is intended to be relevant for preschool through 6th grade so that families only have one lesson to guide each week and families will be encouraged to work together. Look for the lesson on Saturday. It's an experiment! Once we get going, please let us know how this new format is working (or not) for you.

The lessons are designed with the goal to teach appreciation for each other’s similarities and differences and that our community is a place where all are valued for who they are. The “community” aspect of this endeavor is where planning for these lessons becomes a challenge. Naturally, while practicing responsible social distancing, community at this time could mean “all the people living together right now.” However, we think it would be enjoyable to expand our community to fellow All Souls families via social media. If this interests you, please join us on Facebook where we already have a private group called “AllSoulsKC Families with Children”. This is a place where we can share the art pertaining to the lessons our children make, or a child demonstrating the chalice reading, or any of the other countless ways to maintain a church con-nection for our children.

Wishing you all the best! Stay safe and healthy!

Reverend Judith Cady and Melanie Jackel

Dear RE parents, teachers, children and youth,

It is such a privilege and joy for me to serve as the minister of religious

education for the families and children and youth of All Souls. I want you to

know that I care about each and every one of you! All of us at All Souls are

here for you during this pandemic. Please contact me if you need

assistance of any kind.

Stay safe and healthy!

Report Fraudulent Calls & Email Scams, Harvesters...

Having access to healthy food is our most basic human

need. To focus on the steps Americans must take to rebuild after the pandemic, our neighbors need the security of nutritious, dependable meals. Due to increased demand, agencies Harvesters serves are ordering more food than ever to try and

meet the need. In March Harvesters saw its largest one-day order-processing in its 40-year history. The amount of food being distributed to the Harvesters network has continued to increase each week since then. This increase averages over 400,000 lbs. weekly compared to last year needs. As businesses slowly reopen

Harvesters will continue to be called on to support those in need in our community.

With our movements limited the opportunity to contribute to our Harvesters Barrel at church has stopped. Your

financial donation to Harvesters helps feed hungry people today and works to end hunger tomorrow. Every dollar you donate helps Harvesters provide food to hungry families,

children and seniors in our community. While we are practicing social distancing, we must not let this limit our

practicing compassion.

From our Intern Minister Rebecca Gant...

Dear All Souls, I am filled with gratitude as I write this letter to you. By the time you read this, you and the Lawrence congregation will have co-ordained me into the Unitarian Universalist ministry. It is a huge milestone in the life of a minister, and I thank you for your willingness to confirm that you see a minister in me. I am grateful to you for all that I learned from you over the last two years, especially as we worked together on the warming center. I know that this is a ministry that makes a real, tangible difference to people in the community. I'm certain that we saved lives by opening our doors this winter and last. I know that the volunteers who worked on the project gained more than just the satisfaction of helping people stay warm. I heard from many that their connections to one another- including to other volunteers that they might not have gotten to know-- were deep-ened. This project did not go unnoticed in the interfaith community in Kansas City. All Souls' warming center continues to inspire other local clergy and congregations to consider opening their own doors to provide shelter. Finally, I am grateful for your generosity. You welcomed me into All Souls, invited me into leadership, and trusted me with your stories. You will always hold a place in my heart. I did not know back in March that it would likely be the last time I saw you all in person for quite some time. Having missed those opportunities for an in-person goodbye, I look forward to seeing you around the Midwest and at General Assembly. Fondly,

Rebecca Gant

Happy Father’s Day, About Your Father...

About Your Father

Was your dad cool? Or was he old-school in a good way? Did he share knowledge, or inspire you to dream? Did he pass along a meaningful

heritage, or show you how to forge a new path? Is there something that you would like the world to remember about him? Consider recording a 2-3

minute video of you talking about your father's values, or what you learned from him, or his model of caring, for our Father's Day service on June

21. We can get you technical help with how to do this if you would like. Let Rev. Gibbons know if you would be willing to do this.

Green Sanctuary Committee...

SUSTAINABLE LIVING TIPS

From the Green Sanctuary Committee

Sustaining our Pollinators

Animal Pollinators play a role in the plant reproduction of most flowering plants.

They are responsible for a third of the food we eat. These pollinators include insects

(ant, bees, beetles, butterflies, flies, moths and wasps), bats and birds.

Pollinators are under threat from numerous ecological issues including habitat reduction, loss and fragmentation as well as disease, non-native species and

diseases, pollution, use of pesticides and climate change.

If you have a yard create a refuge for insects, birds and bats by planting a variety of

native plant species and by limiting use of pesticides. Change your mind set to choose native species, plant diversity and slightly messy over a manicured lawn of turf grass. As habitat disappears pollinators are becoming more dependent on

small habitats.

Choose organically grown crops and make certain you do not waste food.

The National Resource Defense Council estimates that 40% of the food grown in the U.S. is not eaten. This contributes to the amount of pollinator habitat being

converted to food production.

Our 7th Principle:

Respect for Interdependent Web

of all existence of which we are a part.

Voting Information, Zoom Meeting Space...

Please note that All Souls will not be asked to provide a voting location for the June 2 Election. The Kansas City Election Board has made a decision to have only one voting lo-cation in each ward and is combining all others to those locations (mostly school gyms and large areas allowing for social distancing). The Election Board hopes to have notices posted at all regular election locations notifying voters of their changed voting locations, but has yet to decided about the August and November election dates. Notices to that effect are being (have been) sent to locations not being used for this election. Notices to voters about their changed voting locations are being sent this week.

Related Issues:

This is a low key election with only 2 issues on ballot. (Tax for Fire Dept. & Junior College Board of Directors)

Concern about the virus has caused some regular locations to notify election Board of unavailability, and a number of regular Election Judges have withdrawn their avail-ability due to health concerns.

Thank You...

Thank You

What a fabulous celebration last weekend! It was both humbling and inspiring to receive so many messages of

appreciation and shared memories.

Thanks to Andrea, Barbara, Rebecca, Angie, Jill, Anthony, and all those who worked so hard to organize this

recognition of the 40th anniversary of my ordination; it was very joyful!

I loved seeing many real, live people, even with masks on in cars, and I have enjoyed the cake, and all the flowers

and beautiful cards. I look forward to theaters and restaurants opening, so that I can use the wonderful gift

certificate from the board as well. I can't tell you how much I miss the energy of our Sunday mornings together,

but I am also grateful not to have lost anyone in the congregation to COVID-19 thus far -- let's do everything we

can to keep it that way!

It is not possible in the nature of things for every moment of forty years to be pure happiness, but I know that

each of those moments brought me here, to you, and brought us together to this celebration of my work and our

ministry together. And I know that it has all been worth more than I could have imagined in the beginning. This is

the kind of truth that no one can know as an individual; it can only be realized in community.

Thank you so much to each of you who have been part of this journey; I am so grateful to have shared it with you.

Love to all,

Rev. Kendyl Gibbons

Notes from the Facilities Committee...

The Facilities Committee has been working on criteria for re-opening the church facility and Simpson House and submitted a draft protocol to the Board of Trustees, requesting that the Board approve and implement the recommendations of the Committee. It was felt that we should actively consider and control the use of our buildings and grounds according to our own ideas about properly protecting our church staff and church members, and not leave matters to the ebb and flow of politically influenced criteria. The criteria for use of the building were based on the Mayor's emergency declaration as a point of beginning, but they will not be relaxed, whether or not the city's emergency declaration is allowed to lapse, unless the Board makes a determination that they can safely be relaxed.

The following document has been approved by the Board, after review and consideration of the proposal submitted by the Facilities Committee:

Reopening of All Souls Facilities (Main Facility and Simpson House)

1. All Souls employees may return to their working space practicing social distancing and masking when in the presence of other persons.

2. Selection of Groups allowed to meet at All Souls facilities:

a. Permission will be granted by the All Souls staff.

b. Groups must agree to be compliant with all requirements/standards/rules set by the Board of Trustees. The Board has delegated responsibility for

development and implementation of requirements/standards/rules to the Facilities Committee.

3. The criteria for opening up the facilities will be based upon the Kansas City Mayor’s proclamation of emergency filed and published on March 12, 2020, as amended in the Mayor’s Fourth Amended Order to the proclamation, which Amended Order was filed and published on April 30, 2020, as the same may be extended, substituted or further amended from time to time. All Souls reserves the right to devise and require more restrictive criteria as indicated, consistent with protection of the health and safety of all persons present on the All Souls properties.

4. Requirements for all groups requesting a meeting space:

a. Event leaders are responsible for assuring all requirements are met.

b. Number of participants will be allowed in a meeting space based on the 10/10/10 rules as addressed in the Kansas City Mayor’s proclamation, whether or not the proclamation remains in force.

c. Masks are required to be worn by all non-employees when present indoors on the All Souls properties and outdoors in the event social distancing is impracticable.

d. Persons with respiratory or gastrointestinal symptoms will not be permitted on the properties.

e. Social distancing – 6’ between each person, is required at all times.

f. Congregating space to be made available are the Kitchen and Conover Hall exclusively.

g. Attendees must sign in upon entering the building and provide contact information as required in the Kansas City proclamation and Amended Order, to enable contact tracing should it be necessary. All sign-in information will be retained confidentially by the All Souls Office Administrator, will be used for No purpose other than compliance with the City Proclamation and Order, and will be destroyed after 45 days.

5. Cleaning of facility after meeting events:

a. Meeting rooms surfaces must be wiped down with provided disinfectants before and after meetings.

b. Door knobs and handles must be wiped down with provided disinfectants before and after meetings.

c. Bathroom surfaces, handles and door knobs must be wiped down with provided disinfectants before meetings.

d. Responsibility for cleaning will be determined as part of the rental/usage agreement.

The Facilities Committee will continue to review developments in the Covid-19 pandemic and will make recommendations to the Board from time to time.

All Souls Movie Group...

From the All Souls Movie Group – ideas on what to stream "Love is the most important thing in the world, but baseball is pretty good, too." - Yogi Berra

Baseball Hall of Famer, Rogers Hornsby, once said: People ask me what I do in the win-ter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring." Spring has come and we don’t have baseball; however, we do have baseball movies. Since we can’t go to the ballpark and see 9 innings, here is a list of 9 movies about baseball to stream.

1. Bad News Bears: Walter Mathueu coaches a losing little league team and with the help of a couple of ringers makes takes them to the

championship

2. Bang the Drum Slowly: This 1973 film features Robert De Niro, in one of his first movie roles, plays a catcher with a fatal illness. This film is a wonderful parable about the power of kindness.

3. Bingo Long and the Traveling All Stars and Motor Kings: This 1976 film is a fictional story about the Negro Baseball League. This film has a powerhouse cast including Billie Dee Williams, Richard Pryor and James Earl Jones

4. Eight Men Out: This 1988 film tells the story of the 1919 World Series and the Black Sox scandal

5. Field of Dreams: If you build it they will come

6. 42: The inspiring story of Jackie Robinson

7. League of Their Own: This 1992 film is a fictionalized account of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League. Just remember “there’s no crying in baseball.”

8. Moneyball: Bad Pitt plays the manager of the Oakland A’s who builds a winning team using computer analytics in this fact based Oscar nominated 2011 film.

Virtual Sunday Plus Lunch...

Virtual Sunday Plus

To paraphrase a line from the movie Field of Dreams: If you cook it they will come (we hope).

Are you missing Sunday Plus Lunches? So are the cooks! They miss cooking for the church they love so they have decided to prepare a virtual Sunday Plus Lunch. On Sunday, June 28, 2020, you can take a break from cooking and pick up a Sunday Plus Lunch. If four (4) or more meals are ordered delivery is available within 3 miles of the church only. Meals will be prepared and packaged for you to take home and heat up and enjoy. The meals will be avail-able for curbside pickup and again delivery within 3 miles from the church. If our pilot meal is suc-cessful more meals will be planned.

Please pre-order your meal by Monday, June 22.

Click here for order form and payment. http://allsoulskc.org/sunday-mornings/sunday-plus-lunch/

The Cassity sisters' menu for our first virtual Sunday Plus Lunch will be: Linguine with chicken, artichokes and sundried tomatoes. (Vegetarian and/or gluten free available upon request.)

Salad, and Dessert Options: Miniature lemon or chocolate Bundt cakes or Rice Krispy Treats.

Suggested Donations:

$12.00 for 1 meal / $20 for 2 meals $40 for 4 meals

ALL proceeds will go to the budget.

Volunteers are needed

to take the meals to the cars and for delivery.

Happy Flag Day, NeedleHearts, & Demeters...

NeedleHearts

The

NeedleHearts Group

Following the guidelines to keep our community safe our

June meeting is postponed. We hope to be able to get

together later this summer. Do you still have a stash of

yarn to help you pass the time? If not be careful when you

shop. Please continue to make your 9 x 7 blocks. If you get

bored with that remember to make hats and scarves for

the children of Carver for the next school year. Challenge

yourself by trying a new stitch or starting your holiday

projects early. Take a walk, check out the church’s Zoom

conversations and reach out to family and friends by

phone, snail mail or email. Keep Calm and Stitch On
