DEACON’S QUESTION BOX

See the Abstract Archives for a list of past questions.

Why Do You Go to Mass?

It seems like every day I hear from a patient, ‘I

don’t belong to a parish’, ‘I haven’t gone to Mass in

years’, or ‘I have a great relationship with Jesus &

don’t need Mass to pray’. When I dig a little deeper

for the reasons, I usually hear one of two things:

‘Father said (or did) something that made me feel

unwelcome’ or more often ‘I don’t get anything out

of the Mass’.

So why do you go to Mass? Do you go out of a

sense of duty because your 2nd grade teacher told you

that hell awaits those who don’t go to Mass? Do you

go because you see your friends there & it is a time

to ‘build community’? Do you go just to receive the

Eucharist? Or do you go out of love of God & a

desire to worship Him? If you agreed with one of the

first three reasons, then I am glad it is getting you to

Mass but they are problematic.

The Old Testament contains quite a bit of history

about how the Israelites followed the law out of duty

& ended up repeatedly wandering away from the

Covenant. God desires your heart, not your blind

obedience.

While Jesus refers to us as a community of

followers, there are better places like coffee &

conversation for building those relationships. God

created us in community but when it comes to Mass,

the focus is on Him not each other.

As for receiving the Eucharist as your prime

motive, St. Paul has much to say about worthy

reception. He reminds us that to receive worthily

means not having serious, unconfessed sin on our

soul & having a well-founded belief that this is the

Body, Blood, Soul, & Divinity of our Lord Jesus

Christ with a desire to be joined with Him.

Bottom line: We go to Mass because we are

creations who should worship & thank the One who

created us; the One who loves us for ourselves. That

is the principle reason to be there. God in His

Goodness & Love responds by granting Sacramental

Grace through the Word & through the Eucharist.

And your body & soul must participate together.

That means your body is reinforcing your soul when

it reflects the reverence you feel for being in the

presence of God through its actions.

Feel free to drop me a question for this

column. Questions may be dropped off

on the head table at a Council Meeting

or sent via email to Deacon Russ Swim,

PRO-LIFE MESSAGE

The Difference One Racist Made: Margaret

Sanger’s World

Many Americans don’t think Planned Parenthood

is evil. Let’s take a look at its founder. Margaret

Sanger was born in 1879 in New York, one of 11

children born into an impoverished family. Her

mother was Catholic, her father an atheist. Her

mother had several miscarriages & died at an early

age. Though the cause of death was listed as

tuberculosis, Margaret always attributed her early

death to the fact that her mother was weak from

bearing so many children. This deep-seated disdain

for large families would encompass her life &

contribute to a belief that women should limit—or be

limited—in the number of children they have.

Sanger eventually went to nursing school, then

married & had three children. She & her husband

became immersed in the bohemian world of

Greenwich Village, where they lived. It was at this

time that she joined the New York Socialist Party &

began to advocate for the “sexual education” of

women. Though she never finished nursing school,

Sanger began working as a nurse in a poor immigrant

section of NYC, where she grew to believe in—&

teach—the importance of birth control. She also

began to write about these beliefs in a column

entitled “What Every Girl Should Know.”

Then, in 1914, she started her own publication

which advocated for women using birth control.

Because she mailed out this publication, she was in

violation of the Comstock Act, which made it illegal

to disseminate immoral materials through the mail.

Facing possible jail time for her actions, Margaret

fled to England, where she continued to do research

on birth control & contrive a plan to disseminate it.

In 1915, knowing that the charges in the US had

been dropped against her, Margaret returned to the

US, &, a year later, opened the first birth control

clinic in the states. A little over a week later, she was

arrested & spent 30 days in jail for again being in

violation of the Comstock Law. Sanger would later

appeal the conviction, which would not be

overturned. However, the judge in the case did make

an exception to the law that would allow doctors to

prescribe contraception for medical reasons. This

opened the door for the future legalization of birth

control. In 1917, Sanger began to publish & edit The

Birth Control Review, which she edited until 1929.

In 1921, she established the American Birth

Control League, which would eventually become

Planned Parenthood. It didn’t take long, but Sanger

became a public voice at the forefront of a

reproductive revolution. Not only a powerful driving

force in the legalization of birth control, she

advocated & spread eugenics in the spearheading of

the birth control mentality—with the ultimate goal

of eliminating unwanted people.

Those who espouse eugenics believe that only the

fit should be allowed to live. Many eugenics

proponents—like Hitler—believed in a master race,

at the exclusion of any other person or race deemed

unfit. We see this eugenic philosophy in the

extermination of six million Jews during WWII. And

Sanger had those with known Nazi connections &

sympathies writing for The Birth Control Review.

Nazis in Germany were also well aware of the name

of Margaret Sanger.

We can thus say with certainty that Planned

Parenthood honors a person (Margaret Sanger) who

not only befriended authentic racists & Nazis, but

gave them a widespread platform to spread their

poison. In fact, PPFA names its most prestigious

award after Margaret Sanger, allowing her eugenic

legacy of hatred & intolerance to live on. Today,

Planned Parenthood does everything it can to

eliminate the unfit of society & to profit off women

in crisis pregnancies. It builds abortion facilities in

ethnic communities & worms its way into our

schools so that it can increase its client base by

corrupting our children. Yes, the legacy of this one

woman is alive & well. The insidiousness has left an

indelible mark.

In her articles & speeches, Sanger gave evidence

time & again that she considered there to be a close

link between birth control & eugenics. As the author

of articles, Sanger showed the world her true colors

& the underlying reasons why she thought the world

needed birth control. Eugenics goes even deeper than

racism, because the philosophy espouses it has the

right to determine who should live, who should

reproduce, & who should die.

In “Birth Control & Racial Betterment,” Sanger

writes: “We who advocate birth control, on the other

hand, lay all our emphasis upon stopping not only the

reproduction of the unfit but upon stopping all

reproduction when there is not economic means of

providing proper care for those who are born in

health.”

In Sanger’s mind, those who are sick or weak

should not be allowed to live. Furthermore, she

asserts that these people could not possibly ever be

happy. And she states that those babies who might be

born into families not well off economically should

not be allowed to live & that adults with a lack of

financial means should not be allowed to have

children.

Yet, who is Margaret Sanger to say who might or

might not be sick, weak, rich, poor, happy, or

unhappy? Who is she to tell a couple that their child

will be a burden? This is a violation of basic human

rights.

We were created out of love by a Creator who

knows only love for us & who wants what’s best for

us. We all have different abilities, but we are made

in His image, & as such every human life is sacred.

Sanger does not look at the sanctity of a human life,

but only at “utility.” But Sanger’s not-so-subtle

messages sadly resonated with many then, & now.

In “The Eugenic Value of Birth Control

Propaganda,” she writes: “The eugenic &

civilizational value of birth control is becoming

apparent to the enlightened & the intelligent.”

So, in her opinion, it is only the “enlightened &

the intelligent” who can see the value of birth control.

And those of us who understand that birth control

harms women & that it can kill babies prior to their

implantation are simply stupid. After all, who

doesn’t want to be seen as intelligent or enlightened?

Ironically, she was the sixth of eleven children. If her

mother had followed her daughter’s practices, would

there have been a Margaret Sanger?

GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE Brother Knights, Families & Friends:

As November ends, I turn my thoughts to what I am grateful for. Most of all I’m grateful for my Catholic faith

and how it has brought me closer to Christ. Along with my relationship with our Holy Father I’m grateful for the

Knights of Columbus and the wonderful people I’m privileged to work with. November was a slow month in

comparison to the months prior. The mass for the deceased was held in the early part of the month. My thanks

go out to Dr. Greg Schneider for an excellent effort as usual. Next year we need to show more support for the

families of our deceased members, after all there will be a mass held for all of us sooner or later. Next was our

Men’s Morning of Reflection held at St. Mary’s. The topic was Mary’s men. Great topic and great discussion,

but again low turnout. I believe there was as many from outside our council as where from our council. Now

finally the bags tournament. We had to cancel the second attempt due to no interest. This one is on me guys. I

forgot how hard it is to set up a new project. I should have remembered how hard it was for the first fish fry and

trivia night. Both a success now, so not being one to quit, I will be setting up a committee to see where we go

from here.

Next up December. Hope to see you all at coffee and conversation on the 1st . I would like to thank everyone

for volunteering for ringing the kettles.: Rick Cervantes, Kevin Houser, Mike McKinney, Lance Johnson, Dave

Cray, Jim Richardson, Dick Hunt, Jeremy Goffrier, Gene Paprocki, Dave Sullivan, Red Pearson, Pat Kernan, Bob

Spalding, Jim Wieland, and Jerry Schroeder. Speaking of volunteers, we need someone to head up the right to
