Carter SmithShooting Rachel McAdams at an estate in Harriman,

New York, for Cool and Hot posed unexpectedchallenges for Smith. I loved a shot we did by a stream,

but we all had to scramble down a muddy embankment

to get there, he says. There were unstable rocks

and snakesthough I kept the snake sightings to myself.

The location gave the images a richness of mood.

It allowed Rachel to become a character, he says. The

element of the unknown, like high winds,

can take a picture in a completely new direction.

Beyond Beige, Akranss firstAllureshoot, was supposed

to take place on Park Avenue to give a crisp urbanity

to the photographs. But Mother Nature had a different

idea. We took only one shot out on the street before

it started raining like crazy, says the photographer. We

took shelter in the crews motor home and

built a little emergency set inside. With a few lighting

and equipment adjustments, the shoot continued.

Luckily, the motor home had a similar nude color scheme,Akrans says. It worked out really well, actually.

The August issue ofAllurehas been dedicated to free

stuff for seven years, and Tortolani makes it a mission to

up the amount of giveaways every time. But topping

herself isnt just a numbers game. Our giveaways arent

junky freebieswe have Marc Jacobs fragrances,

a Max Mara bag, Dior nail kits, says the Allurebeauty

director. The products are so good, I wish I could

enter. But her excitement doesnt come close to that of

Allurereaders. I have a friend in L.A. who cancels hertrainer for the month so she can be ready to go at 9 ..

Brooke HauserIm a huge fan of Mean Girls. When I learned Id be

profiling Rachel McAdams, my first thought was that Iveinterviewed three of the four Plastics, says Hauser, the

author of Cool and Hot. (Look out, Lacey Chabert.)

Though they mostly discussed McAdamss career,

theAllurecontributing editor couldnt resist asking the

actress about her ex Ryan Gosling. Shes aware

that fans want to hear about her and Ryan, says Hauser.

She didnt shut me down, but she didnt encourage

me, either. Shes a good sport, but she has boundaries.

Sebastian KimI wanted the photos to be energetic, says

Kim of shooting Style Strategy. To ensure

that, he asked model Bette Franke to move

in ways that were practically acrobaticand

rigged up an invisible system to help. Wewanted her limbs to come out of the frame

a bit, so we positioned a metal bar above

her head to help her balance, saysAllure

    fashion director Siobhan Bonnouvrier.

Sebastian is fantastic at making sure every

part of the models body is in the right

    placeit creates a beautiful photograph.

Jenna RosensteinOne of Rosensteins lowest beauty moments

made her the ideal writer for Thick

Lashes. She was a seat-filler at the 2009

MTV Video Music Awards, and I was so

worried about my outfit that I totally forgot

to put on mascara, says theAllurebeauty

assistant. I felt so exposed! No one

seemed to notice her bare lashes (Kanye

West stole the show, after all), but

    Rosenstein wont make that mistake

again. Im one of those people who cantleave the house without fully coated lashes.

Elizabeth SiegelAsAlluresbeauty features editor, Siegelregularly interviews dermatologists and

beauty experts. And while Martha Stewart is

neither, shes an idol of mine, and shes

clearly passionate about the topic, says the

author of Pile It On. That topic? Layering

skin products to new excess. For her and

other skin-care superusers, this is a ritual.

Siegel was most impressed by Stewarts

dedication. She told me that she wakes up

at 4 .. and immediately applies a mask

for an hour. And really, is that so surprising?

Sophia PanychThe subject of Happy Medium wasnt

    foreign territory for theAllurebeauty editor,

who recently chopped her long hair intoa lob (a.k.a. a long bob). On Pinterest, Id

been pinning lobs to my hair inspiration

board for months, Panych says. So I was

excited to learn something new about

them. And she did, including how to create

undone waves and a fast updo. But the

single coolest thing about the lob? Straight

or wavy, the cut styles itself. Everyone likes

it because you really can just wash and go.

the use of Botox from just the forehead

to the lower face and using it to elevate

the nose. Now everyone does that.

What was it like to be at the forefront of

Botox use in general?People were veryskeptical that it could be used cosmet-

ically. There were a lot more conversa-

tions with patients about the science

and how it works, and now people

are almost too blas about it. Its gone

from one extreme to the other.

Whats behind the new trend of layer-

    ing multiple skin-care products? The

advent of serums. Theyre very easy

to layer since theyre light and get

    absorbed quickly. Ive been layering

for a long, long time. Im a big layerer.

    Mara RoszakRoszak, the hairstylist

    who cut Emma Stones

    and Kate Maras hair

    into long bobs, told us

    how to get the perfect

    cut in Happy Medium.

    Why hair?I had always

done my friends hair, from the time

we were 13 and going to bar mitzvahs

every weekend. It was the first time Ifelt like I was good at something.

What was your irst job?Right after I

graduated from beauty school, a fam-

ily friend who was a celebrity publicist

called and asked if I could do Sarah

Michelle Gellars hair for a premiere.

I was 17, and it was my first time ever

doing someone who hadnt paid $5 at

a beauty school, or a friend or family

member. It wasnt the worst thing Ive

    ever seen.

Why is the lob so big right now? Itsso easy to wear. People prep them-

selves for a shock. But when they get

it, theyre immediately like, Oh, this

    feels like me.

Ranella HirschTurns out that there is

a smart way to OD on

    skin care. Hirsch, a der-

    matologist in Boston

    who specializes in laser

    surgery and aesthetic

    dermatology, explains

    in Pile I t On.

Why did you go into dermatology? Its a

genuine privilege to help people pres-

ent their best face to the world. And its

always cool to see people on the hap-piest days of their lives, since I often

meet patients for the first time before

    their wedding or graduation.

    Why is cosmetic dermatology import-

ant?People knock taking care of your

appearance, but in reality its what

motivates us to exercise. Its what moti-

vates my four-year-old to tuck his shirt

    in. Its healthy.

Do you layer? If its the beginning of win-

ter and Im not ready to switch to a really

heavy cream, I put a serum on to boostthe effectiveness of my moisturizer.

Kate LeeLee, who works on pho-

    to shoots and as Chanels

    celebrity makeup artist,

told us how to get themost out of our mascara

    in Thick Lashes.

    When did you get into

makeup? There was a musician in

the 80s named Toyah Willcox who

would paint flocks of birds flying

across her face, and I used to emulate

that dailyand be sent home from

    school to wash it off.

What was your most memorable job?

The very first shoot I did for Vanity

Fair. Annie Leibovitz, [hairstylist]Danilo, Kate Winslet, Sophia Loren...

everyone was there because it was a

    Hollywood cover. I remember standing

on the set thinking, I cant believe Im

    allowed to be here.

How has mascara changed since you

    started?The formulation has changed

so much in the past five years. Chanel

was early to do rubber wands. You can

get right into the base of the lashes.

    Wendy RoweMakeup artist Rowe

    achieved the near impos-

    sible when she made

    nude makeup look

    totally jaw-dropping in

    Beyond Beige.

    What do you think is

the best part of being a makeup artist?

Every face is different, so makeup

    never looks the same.

What was your biggest makeup chal-

lenge? Doing the makeup for theBurberry shows for 14 years, [design-

    er] Christopher [Bailey] would want

things that didnt exist, so I would

have to make them. Once, I made a

stormy gray eye color from lip balm,

    sunscreen, and greasepaint.

What was your most exciting job? As

    the creative consultant for Burberry,

I do everything from creating the

    concepts to product development.

    The chemists arent makeup artists,

so youll go in and be like, You needto change this.

    next role is opposite Emma

    Stone and Bradley Cooper

    in an as-yet-unnamed Cameron

Crowe movie that willbe out this Christmas day.

    Hair StoryHairstylist Ken ORourke

    gave McAdams

    windblown, ethereal

    waves with just

    two products

    and a curling wand.

    He bulked up the

    front of her naturally

    wavy hair with

    a thickening spray

    before simply twirling

    six to eight small

pieces around a one-inch curling iron.

    He shook through

    the curls with

    his ingers and set

    them with a quick

    spritz of hair spray.

Makeup LessonShe showed up with rosy

cheeks, so we wanted toembrace what was alreadythere, said makeup artistDotti. Theres a raw beauty tosuch a minimal, fresh look.

1Dotti primed McAdamssskin with a hydrating sheetmask before applying amoisturizer with sunscreen.

2After a few touches ofconcealer, she blendeda bronzer all over the actresssskin and a pink-nude blushon just the apples of her cheeks.

3Dotti applied false lashesand swept mascara on overthem. A dash of clear lip

balm and they called it a day.

For someone whos starred in two time-travel movies, the

setting for McAdamss secondAllure cover shoot was

fittinga historic sprawling estate in Harriman, New York.

Carter Smith photographed McAdams on a chilly May day.

Farm to Tablet: The skies had just cleared when McAdams

arrived for the shoot, which was inspired by the 1980 film Tess (based, in

turn, on the 1891 novel Tess of the DUrbervillesby Thomas Hardy). She

headed for the stables, where the crew was stationed, and flipped through

images of the clothes withAllurecreative director Paul Cavaco before

grabbing breakfast. Sipping decaf black tea that shed brought, McAdams

watched a bit of Tesson an iPad while hair and makeup got to work.

Hats Off: Cavaco suggested McAdams try on a bonnet as they put together

the first look. My mom used to make me wear one, and I hated i t,

she said. Now I love it. The crew all laughed as they put bonnets on oneanother, then ventured out to a creek on the property. They shot the

second look at the stables before a sudden rain shower.

Day Tripping: McAdams ate a late lunch of couscous salad, kale, carrots,

and salmonbut what she raved about was the lemon tart. She sliced

pieces for the crew before getting her hair and makeup touched up for the

cover shot. McAdams thanked the crew and hopped into a car around

5 .. for the hour-long ride back to the city. JENNA ROSENSTEIN

Under My Skinuring every facial, there comes a moment of truth when

the aesthetician centers her magnifying light inches

from your skin and issues her assessment. Usually, thewords burn like an acid peel. It comes down to this: What

youre doing or not doing, using or not using, is entire-

ly wrong. And she would gladly sell you the series of six

deep-cleansing treatments and 14 products to make

things right. She waits for your answer, holding the loop

extractor in a vaguely threatening way. Well?

Having a facial recently at a new salon, I braced myself for the critique-

slash-sales-pitch. The facialist didnt follow the script. Where are you

from? she asked. I told her, Here. New York. She wasnt having it. Your

pores are too clean for a New Yorker.

It was the nicest thing a facialist had ever said to me. Ive always wanted

to be a real New Yorker in everything but my pores. After growing up in

and around New York City, I moved to St. Louis at 14. Even there, especially

there, I wanted to be a New Yorker. One of my favorite family rituals was

really an effort to maintain some connection to the city (and by the city

I mean, of course, New York). After church on Sundays, my father would

stop for bagels and lox, then travel to a faraway newsstand that carried The

New York Times.Id page through the sections, mostly studying the movie

listings. All those choices, in all those languages! The movies I watchedwere often set in Manhattan, Manhattanincluded, and I sometimes lost

the plotline because I was so focused on the streets and stores.

When I finally got back to New York City eight years later, I lived on

bagels, the Times, and movies and tried to hang on to my Midwestern skin.

My first facial ever was at Mario Badescu, which back then looked like a

dentists office, with a similar degree of pampering. It didnt matter. The

feeling of walking out on the gritty streets of New York with immaculate

skin was magical, like being in a force field.

There were other facials at fancier addresses, with fruit plates, glasses

of prosecco, paraffin dips, and heated booties, but none matched thatfirst transportive time.

Ive learned that having a facial is a practical necessity in New York City.

Its like getting your windows washed at the start of each season. You know

the results wont last much longer than the first rainstorm, but that fleeting

sparkle amid the grime is something to experience.

What it is: A depuffing undereye concealer that also treats dark

    circles, available in six shades

Key ingredients: N-acetyl glucosamine and niacinamide (to

minimize undereye circles); cucumber extract (to soothe); and

    glycerin (to moisturize)

How it looks/feels: The cooling metal applicator and lightweight

serum feel just like any other eye depuffer, only this one is lightly

tinted to brighten and conceal as you swipe it under each eye.

Why we like it: Meet our new hangover helper. Just a couple of

creasing or looking cakey, as many heavier formulas doand

both night owls and allergy sufferers will appreciate how the

metal applicator and cucumber extract fight puffiness. The more

often you use it, the better you look. N-acetyl glucosamine

and niacinamide work together to reduce hyperpigmentation

and speed up cell turnover to treat dark circles, says

cosmetic chemist NiKita Wilson. In clinical trials, patients

THE NEWS: CliniqueSmart Custom-RepairSerum is loaded withingredients that take

on pretty much everypossible sign of aging(dark spots, fine lines, dryness, you name it).The company claims

that the formula can targetspecific skin woes and deliverjust the ingredients to treatthem alone.HOW IT WORKS: The dizzyinglist of active ingredients canbe divided into two camps:ones that benefit everycomplexion (such as licoriceand red-algae extract toreduce inflammation and

hyaluronic acid to moisturize)and those that supposedlyspring into action as needed(such as ultrasomes androxisomes, which help repairUV damage, or ergothioneine, which slows the productionof the melanin that causesdark spots). Cosmetic chemistNiKita Wilson confirmsthat the concept has merit:Some of the ingredientscan detect cell damage; ifthe skin doesnt have aproblem, the ingredientswont do anything.

THE VERDICT: As sexy as acustom anti-ager may sound, its more likely that the sheernumber of ingredients is whatdelivers results. And despitebeing jam-packed, the serumfeels light and smooth. Consider a little something we like to call

the Louboutin effect. You know how nude

patent stilettos make your legs look long

and lean? Well, a high-gloss nude nail pol-

ish does the same thing for your fingers.

Its sexy and refinednot to mention a

cool palate cleanser from all those sequined, bedazzled,

    and sushi-appliqud manicures.

Choosing the right nude lacquer, however, isnt

exactly simple. Its really more like youre picking outa foundation than a nail polish, says manicurist Jenna

Hipp, who recommends testing shades on bare nails

and checking them in natural light to find the most flat-

tering one for your complexion. For starters, you dont

want to match it exactly. Go a shade lighter than your

skin tone, says manicurist Jin Soon Choi. It brightens

up your hands and makes for a clean and elegant look.

Pick sheer nudes when you want a classic manicure

and more opaque ones for a trendier look. And dont

even think about picking a polish with shimmer (its the

opposite of tasteful). Once you know the finer points,we promise, getting naked is easy. LEXI NOVAK

An opaque nude manicure is as trendy as a noncolor gets.

1Pick your shade. We could go into detail about

undertones and color correction, but lets just cut to

the chase: Hold the bottle of polish up to a

bottle of your foundation for a side-by-side comparison.

    2

Do a double take. If the polish has even the slightest

hint of yellow or gray, put it back on the shelf.

Yellowish shades make hands look sallow, and grayish

beiges are drab, says Hipp. Skip anything with shimmer

or a glittery or pearlescent inishthis manicure is supposed

to look as smooth as patent leather.

3Layer, layer, layer. For the most even application, its

better to do three light layers than two heavy ones,

because globs are especially obvious on nudes, says

    manicurist Elle.

4Make a sweeping gesture. Paint a curve along your

cuticle irst, then ill in the rest of your nail, says

Choi. It creates a smooth border, whereas using all

straight, vertical brushstrokes causes a zigzag edge.

1Brush up. Sheer nudes reveal yellowing nails. Remove

stains by rubbing them with whitening toothpaste,

says Hipp. Let it sit for a minute or two, then wipe away

    any residue with rubbing alcohol.

2Go for gold. If you think nude nails make your hands

look lifeless, layer one coat of sheer rose-gold

under your shade to warm it up, says Elle, who likes

Essie nail polish in Imported Bubbly. You can also top an

opaque nude with one coat of sheer pink, like LOral Paris

Colour Riche Nail in How Romantic. It adds a youthful, rosy glow, says Saunders.

3Make it matte. For fashion shows, manicurists often top

sheer nudes with one layer of matte topcoat. It makes

you look like you have naturally perfect nailsnot like

youre wearing polish, says Saunders. We like Butter London

Matte Finish Shine Free Top Coat.

4Style your hands like a supermodel. Candice Swanepoel

and Freja Beha Erichsen pair opaque nudes with memory

rings (thin gold bands that sit above the knuckles) for a

delicate look. Try Catbird First Knuckle Rings.

    5

Know how to go nude at the beach. When youre outside

all day, the suns UV rays can turn your polish yellow, which is especially obvious and unappealing with

nude shades. Apply a topcoat with sunscreens like

benzophenone-1 and octocrylene to protect your color. We

    like Zoya Armor Top Coat.

Now that youve committed everything you just read to

memory, youre ready to pick a polish...just kidding.

Tear out this card before your next manicureits got our

favorite polishes for every skin tone.

Sheer NudesPick a sheer lacquer that matches your unpolished nails.

If your nails are the same color as your skin, try the sheer

beige CoverGirl Outlast Stay Brilliant nail polish in Forever

Fawn(1)or Hipp X RGB Nail Tint in T1(2).

If your nails are whitish, go for Essie nail polish in Allure(3).

The pinkish ivory latters white nails, which are common on

women with olive and dark skin tones, says Saunders.

If your nails are pink, we like Dior Nail Lacquer in Muguet(4).

Its soft enough to look nudenot too precious or too rosy.

Opaque NudesFor a nude lacquer with oomph, pick one that matches

your skin tone or your foundation.

If you have fair skin, try Zoya nail polish in Chantal(5).Avoid

beiges with noticeable pink or white tones in the bottle. They

look either cloying or dated on hands.

If you have olive skin, try Jinsoon nail polish in Nostalgia(6).Skip yellow-beiges, which will make your skin look sallow.

If you have dark skin, try OPI Nail Lacquer in Going My Way or

Norway(7)or Este Lauder nail polish in Diabolique (8).Stay

away from anything remotely grayitll look ashy on the skin.

The classic nude manicure looks clean, professional,

    and understated.

Match your nails. Look at the color of your unpolished

nailits either pink, whitish, or the same color as your skin,

says manicurist Michelle Saunders. A polish that, in the

bottle, matches your nail color will look nude on your hands.

Road test it. Narrow your selection to three or four, and

paint each on a separate nail. Then assess them in natural

light. You want one that doesnt make your skin look gray,

yellow, or pink. Check your cuticles, too, says Hipp. If they

look dark or red, the shade is wrong.

Tidy up. Clean under your nails, because if the polish is

    sheer, it isnt hiding anythingobviously.

File down. Keep your nails short. If too much of the tips

show, it could look like a dreaded French manicure.

Be smoothreal smooth. Sheer nudes reveal imperfections

in your nails natural color and texture. Lightly buff each

nail twice to smooth bumps and use a ridge-illing basecoat.

We like Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure Smooth &

    Strong Base Coat.

Stop after one coat. If you want a sheer effect, heavy layers

are a bad ideaand can look too pink or too white. Paint

each nail in three strokes: one down the middle, and one

    on each side.

Gloss over it. One layer of pigment dulls quickly, so reapply

topcoat every day, or just rub cuticle oil oneach nail

for temporary shine (try OPI Top Coator CND SolarOil).

Skip anything with shimmeror a glittery or pearlescent finish

this manicure is supposed tolook as smooth as patent leather.

    Experts explain how to

give a guy hair advice and endurea long layover, plus the best

    airport restaurants and more.

    How to Look

    Great at

    the BeachAn Interview With

Laure Hriard DubreuilHriard Dubreuil is the owner of

    the Webster boutiques in Miami.

At the beach, people either try too

hard or not hard enough. You want

to be comfortable but still chic.

Cover yourself. If Im going to be

somewhere really hot, I bring a caf-

    tan (Lemlem makes beautiful ones)

or a thin cotton pareo. If it gets chilly

or windy in the afternoon, I love a

big, chunky wool sweater over a bath-

ing suitits very Marilyn Monroe.Im also into ponchos, like ones from

    Lisa Marie Fernandez.

Stay in the shade. Theres something

so feminine about a floppy straw hat.

If the rim starts to fray or the hat has

a funny shape from being stuffed in

    your bag, all the better.

    Accessorize responsibly. I love jew-

elry at the beach as long as you dont

go overboard. Ill wear a few gold neck-

laces and ropy bracelets, but never ear-

rings. I do keep a pair of hoops in my

bag in case I go straight to cocktails.

Stay grounded. The beach is no place

for high heels, even wedges. Youll

look like a fashion victim. Ancient

Greeks flat sandals are the best.

Dress it up. If youre at a more for-

mal beach, like St.-Tropez, bring a

backless maxidress and a rope belt to

throw on over your bathing suit before

lunch or dinner. Add some colorful

sunglasses, run a little oil through

your hair, and put everything else in

a straw or canvas toteyoure all set.INTERVIEW BY DANIELLE PERGAMENT

    TipAt the beach, you

    want your jewelery

    to look more

    hippie than flashy.

    1Give him conditioning shampoo.

    Many guys dont realize they

    need conditioner, or they think

the extra step is a hassle. A cleanserwith hydrating ingredients, like Dove

Men + Care Fresh Clean 2-in-1 or

Paul Mitchell Mitch Double Hitter, is

quick and doesnt weigh hair down.

    2Depuff with grooming cream.

    Squeaky-clean hair can go

fluffy, but theres an easy fix.

Since its lightweight and not sticky,

grooming cream is the most non-

product product out there and perfect

for a novice. He can use a nickel-size

blob to give the hair a little weight. Ilove Bumble and Bumble and Ameri-

    can Crew grooming creams.

3Make sure his hair can move.Gel

is still the best-selling mens hair

product, but Im not a fan, since

it cant be manipulated after it sets.

You cant run your fingers through

    gelled hair without creating flakes.

    How to Help a Guy

With His HairAn Interview With Diana Schmidtke

Schmidtke is a stylist and mens grooming expert who has worked with

George Clooney, Jon Hamm, and Robert Pattinson.

A mans first step is a good haircut from a reputable salon or barber (one

that doesnt give out lollipops). The cut should have a gradual progression

from short to longer on top, and the back of the neck should be clean. From

there, the average guy just needs a little help figuring out the product aisle.

If hes going for more of a Mad Men,

done look that isnt frozen, a prod-

uct like Aquage Transforming Paste is

more malleable. And ban clear, glossy

pomade. It makes hair look oily, and

it attracts light to the scalp, so its like

a spotlight on thinning hair. Steer

him toward products that are white

in the tub, not clear. (Try R+Co Con-formist Hair Paste or Redken for Men

Outplay Texture Putty.) For a cool but

relaxed look, show him how to warm

up a dime-size amount of the product

in his hands and apply it from front

to back, roughing it up with his fin-

    gers to style.

4Bulk up.For guys with fine hair,

a texturizing spray is perfect: It

    adds texture and makes hair

look fresh. He should spray it from

six inches away and style with hisfingers. Try Oribe Dry Texturizing

    Spray or Toweldry Spray Styler.

5Watch his back. Once a week,

use clippers to keep his neckline

    and sideburns looking fresh. He

wont be able to do it himself since he

cant see the back of his head. If you

notice any hairs sprouting outside the

    haircuts line, trim them.

    INTERVIEW BY MEIRAV DEVASH

Clear, glossy pomade makes hair look oily and attracts light

to the scalp, so its like a spotlight on thinning hair.

Teach Him ThisThese guidelines work on any

hair texture with any product thatcomes in a tube, tin, or bottle.

    USE YOUR HANDS

Plop a dab of product in one hand, then

    rub both hands together vigorously.

Be sure to get the ingertips, too.

Attacking your hair with only the palms

makes for a globby, uneven look.

    FORM A CLAW

For movement and separation, use your

product-slicked hand like a rake and

slowly pull it through the hair. Optional:

Grab chunks in the front and twist

to the left, then twist to the right.

    APPLY EVERYWHERE

Remember, people can see you from all

angles, so move your hands from front

to back, then back to front. And use

a hand mirroror ask your girlfriend

    to check your rear view.

How to Make the Most of a Layover

    Consider this when booking your

ticket: A long layover might mean

    more savings andmore sightseeing.

Get out. I had an overnight layover in

Geneva, where the (free!) airport train

takes you into town in six minutesyou better believe I spent my 12

hours taking a brisk stroll along the

    river, then reinvigorating myself at

the Four Seasons pool and spa. In

many European hubs, its easy to get

into town. Just make sure you have

enough time to wander the city and

    still clear security.

Hit the lounge. When you cant leave,

most airline lounges offer day passes

for around $50these are a savior if

you need a shower, nap, or quiet cor-

ner with Wi-Fi. Start with the airline

    youre flying, but independent loung-

es are a growing trend, too. Dallass
