TAPEWORMS - Treat every 3 months except in a hydatid tapeworm area where every 6 weeks is recommended, or on veterinary advice. Dogs can become reinfested with worms and treatment should be repeated. Read the retreatment recommendations below or consult your veterinarian. Dipylidium caninum tapeworms are transmitted by fleas. Control of this tapeworm should include flea control measures in addition. Worms, if present, may not appear in the droppings at all, or may not appear for up to 48 hours after treatment. GIARDIA - This protozoan parasite is found commonly in dogs and may be the cause of diarrhoea, particularly in pups. It is more common amongst dogs living in multi-dog households and kennels. Giardia also occurs in humans and has historically been considered a potential zoonosis, however recent studies suggest that host-specific species may exist. Control of Giardia is difficult because the oocysts are resistant and long-lived in the environment. Diagnosis of suspected Giardia infection should be confirmed by a veterinary surgeon. Some evidence indicates that bathing and a move to a non-contaminated environment in conjunction with treatment will improve overall control. COMPATIBILITY - DRONTAL may be combined with other treatments, for example heartworm prevention, flea or tick treatment. SAFETY - DRONTAL may be given safely to all dogs including old animals, young pups, working dogs and greyhounds. It may be given to pregnant bitches but is only clinically indicated in the last 10 days prior to whelping. SIDE EFFECTS: Vomiting may be observed in a small number of dogs after administration. NOTE - Zipper worm (Spirometra erinacei) is a less common tapeworm. If segments are seen in the droppings less than 2 weeks after treatment they probably belong to this worm. When tapeworm treatment only is required, as in this case, give DRONCIT ® Tapewormer for Dogs and Cats which is specifically for tapeworm treatment. DISPOSAL - Dispose of empty container by wrapping with paper and putting in the garbage. RETREATMENT RECOMMENDATIONS - Worms often reinfest dogs so it is necessary to: (i) treat the dog itself, (ii) reduce environmental contamination by daily disposal of droppings, (iii) remove tapeworm intermediate hosts eg. fleas. Follow the retreatment recommendations in the table below: These recommendations are of a general nature. In specific instances where infestation is particularly heavy or many dogs are housed together, a veterinary surgeon should be consulted. Flea tapeworms can reinfest dogs and begin producing segments 2-3 weeks after a treatment. If segments reappear before the next DRONTAL treatment is due, either re-treat with DRONTAL or use DRONCIT as an intermediate, tapeworm only, treatment. Retreatment for Giardia depends on the circumstances and should be guided by your veterinary surgeon. A single 3 day treatment may be sufficient in single dog situations, but repeat treatments may be necessary in kennels and shelters. HYDATID TAPEWORM - A single dose of DRONTAL is all that is required. However, this dose should be repeated every 6 weeks to ensure that newly acquired hydatid tapeworms are expelled before reaching maturity. Dogs should not be fed, or allowed to feed on, offal from any species. Dogs in hydatid areas should be treated every 6 weeks. It is important to ensure that the dog does not acquire offal in order to break the life cycle of the hydatid tapeworm. DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATIONFOR INTESTINAL WORMS: One Drontal Medium Dog Chew treats 10kg, and one Drontal Large Dog Chew treats 35kg.

It is essential to weigh dogs before treatment.

Fasting prior to dosing is not necessary. Administer the dog’s correct dose by mouth. Most dogs will eat DRONTAL chews as a tasty treat, or crush and mix with dogs’ food. If worm problems persist, consult a veterinarian. Cut chew with a sharp knife.

GIARDIAAdminister the above dosage for three consecutive days. DRONTAL treatment for Giardia should be based on veterinary diagnosis.

    GENERAL DIRECTIONS INTESTINAL WORMSTREATMENT RECOMMENDATIONS

Worms can infect dogs in many ways, so it is necessary to:

    1. treat the dog itself,2. reduce environmental contamination by daily disposal of droppings,3. remove tapeworm intermediate hosts eg. fleas4. never allow dogs to feed on offal of any species.

Follow the treatment recommendations in the table below:

TAPEWORMSFlea tapeworms can reinfest dogs and begin producing segments 2-3 weeks after DRONTAL treatment. If tapeworm segments reappear in the faeces before the next DRONTAL treatment is due, either retreat with DRONTAL or DRONCIT, which is a specific tapeworm-only treatment. Treat all dogs with a SERESTO collar (controls fleas for 8 months) or ADVANTAGE monthly to control fleas. Hydatid tapeworms infect dogs when they eat infected offal e.g. sheep or kangaroo offal etc. DO NOT allow dogs to eat offal. This disease can also be transmitted to humans via infected dogs’ faeces, so close attention to worming dogs in hydatid areas is essential to protect the whole family.

These recommendations are of a general nature. In specific instances, where infestation is particularly heavy or many dogs are housed together, a veterinary surgeon should be consulted.

GIARDIAThis protozoan parasite is found commonly in dogs and may be the cause of diarrhoea, particularly in pups. It is more common amongst dogs living in multi-dog households and kennels. Giardia also occurs in humans and has historically been considered a potential zoonosis, however recent studies suggest that host-specific species may exist. Control of Giardia is difficult because the cysts are resistant and long-lived in the environment. Diagnosis of suspected Giardia infection should be confirmed by a veterinary surgeon. Some evidence indicates that bathing and a move to a non-contaminated environment in conjunction with treatment will improve overall control.

COMPATIBILITY AND SAFETYDRONTAL chews may be combined with other treatments, for example heartworm prevention, flea or tick treatment. DRONTAL chews may be given safely to all dogs including old animals, young pups, working dogs and greyhounds.

Use in Pregnant and Lactating Bitches: The safety of DRONTAL chews has not been investigated during the 1st and 2nd part of pregnancy,

(this hookworm is usually restricted to tropical areas in Australia), Ancylostoma ceylanicum, Uncinaria stenocephala.

    Whipworm Trichuris vulpis.

This product does not control tapeworms or heartworm.

    TREATMENT RECOMMENDATIONS & WORMING PROGRAMMES

ROUNDWORMS AND HOOKWORMSThese parasites infect puppies while still in the mother’s womb (roundworm) or as soon as they suckle milk (hookworms and roundworms). Hookworms are blood suckers and, in large numbers, are capable of causing anaemia and death, particularly in puppies.Due to the life cycle of these worms it is important to treat puppies frequently until at least 12 weeks of age (see below). Both worms can also infect dogs of any age by ingestion of worm eggs or larvae. Hookworm larvae can also penetrate through the skin.To reduce general environmental contamination by eggs and larvae from the bitch during pregnancy, pregnant bitches should be treated routinely prior to mating, at the end of pregnancy and during lactation. (See below).

WHIPWORMSThis parasite lives in the caecum (large intestine) and is transmitted by eggs, passed onto the ground by one dog, being ingested by another dog. The eggs are extremely resistant and long lasting.

RETREATMENTWorms often reinfest pups so it is necessary to:(i) treat the puppy itself and all other in contact dogs,(ii) reduce environmental contamination by daily disposalof droppings. It is recommended that puppies be treated as follows:• 2 weeks of age and then at 4, 8 and 12 weeks of age• after 12 weeks of age every month until 6 months of age• thereafter every 3 months. If whipworm is a problem, treat every

    6-8 weeks.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE: SHAKE BEFORE USE.DRONTAL Suspension is given as a single dose by mouth using the enclosed dosing syringe. Fasting prior to dosing is NOT necessary. IT IS ESSENTIAL TO WEIGH DOGS BEFORE TREATMENT.

    DOSAGE: 1 mL per 1 kg bodyweight.This corresponds to 15 mg/kg febantel and 14.4 mg/kg pyrantel embonate.

HOOKWORMS & ROUNDWORMS:Dogs and Puppies: treat at 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks of age and then every month until six months of age; thereafter every 3 months or on veterinary advice. Use DRONTAL® tablets for larger dogs where appropriate and based on the dog’s size.

WHIPWORMS:Treat every 6-8 weeks after 3 months of age. Dogs can become reinfested with worms and treatment should be repeated. Also read the detailed retreatment recommendations below. If worm problems persist, consult a veterinarian. This prescription is not formulated for cats and is not recommended for this use.

COMPATIBILITY:DRONTAL Suspension may be combined with other treatments, for example heartworm prevention, flea or tick treatment.

SAFETY:DRONTAL Suspension may be given safely to all young pups and small dogs.

These recommendations are of a general nature. In specific instances where infestation is particularly heavy or many dogs are housed together, a veterinary surgeon should be consulted.

CONTROL OF REINFESTATIONRoundworm, Hookworm, Whipworm: Roundworm and hookworm are usually transmitted to puppies while still in the womb or through the mother’s milk and it is difficult to prevent this transmission. However, both these worms, and whipworms, are also transmitted by eggs and larvae on the ground. The eggs of roundworm and whipworm are very resistant and may survive in soil for years so regular treatment to prevent environmental contamination with eggs is essential.Puppies under 6 months and pregnant bitches will produce large numbers of worm eggs and therefore require more attention to worm control.Where tapeworm control is also required DRONCIT® tablets should be administered at the appropriate dosage.DISPOSAL: Dispose of empty container and packaging by wrapping in paper and putting in garbage.STORE BELOW 30˚C (Room Temperature).APVMA Approval No. 48642/57662LIMITATION OF LIABILITY: Failure to use the product strictly as directed may be illegal, prove dangerous or render the product ineffective.
