WELCOME TO THE
ALMAGUIN Highlands
“ I look forward to the Chamber participating in another exciting year for our region. Welcome to the Almaguin Highlands, enjoy and come Celebrate Almaguin! ”
CHAMBER PRESIDENTEMILIO FOFFANOEmilio was inducted as President of the Almaguin Highlands Chamber of Commerce in 2013.
President’s Messagehe Almaguin Highlands Chamber of
Commerce has had many successes this
past year. In early 2015, we received
our incorporation and realized our intentions of
representing this wonderful region called the
Almaguin Highlands. Under the direction of our
Strategic Plan we implemented a unique tiered
membership system that allows businesses,
municipalities, community organizations and
interested citizens to provide their input regarding
the directions we take towards building capacity
within our businesses and our communities.
As president, I truly value the relationships that
we have built with the municipalities throughout
the region and the support that they have given to
the Chamber. The Almaguin Highlands Chamber
of Commerce will continue to create and grow
strong partnerships throughout the region and with
senior levels of government. With our partners, we
will continue to deliver on our commitment to the
growth and prosperity of the Almaguin Highlands.
he Almaguin (al-mag-win) Highlands
Region of Ontario is located 200KM
North of Toronto in the East Parry Sound
District. Originally settled in the late 1800s, The
Almaguin Highlands is comprised of unique villages,
rural townships, freshwater lakes and untouched
Canadian wilderness. The name Almaguin comes
from its proximity to the world famous Algonquin
Park and the Magnetawan River that flows from the
Park to Georgian Bay.
With a population of only 24,000 over 5,200 square
kilometers, The Almaguin Highlands is a perfect
destination to enjoy a relaxing natural experience,
or a playground for your inner adventurer. Whether
you are a resident, a returning visitor, or brand
new to the area, there are a multitude of ways to
enjoy and experience the peaceful, yet exciting
surroundings.
The Almaguin Highlands is a region filled with
culture. Experience the unique history of our
villages and townships by visiting one of our
museums. Take in some breathtaking works from
our diverse artists and craftspeople. Enjoy some of
our local music from a variety of talented musicians.
Find what you are looking for at any number of
unique businesses throughout the region.
Looking for an excuse to get outdoors? Walk out
your front door and be greeted by a truly Canadian
experience. Both residents and visitors alike can
enjoy many outdoor activities that the four seasons
have to offer. Whether on foot, on skis, on wheels,
tracks, or simply on the end of a dock there are
experiences waiting to be had and stories waiting to
be told.

Begin your tour at the Welcome
Centre on Hwy 520 located
at the falls in Burk’s Falls. The
Welcome Centre offers visitors freshly
brewed coffee or refreshing ice cream
and is a source of information for
surrounding businesses and events.
A covered walk bridge allows the
spectator to view the falls. If you are in
need of water, you can fill your bottles
from a municipal well at the end of the
parking lot. Near the Welcome Centre is
a public dock and boat launch onto the
Magnetewan River.
Heading west on Hwy 520, once you
pass over the North Creek, turn left
onto Midlothian Road. At the corner
is the Township of Ryerson office and
Garage built in 1989. Annually, in June,
the Township of Ryerson hosts a large
community craft and yard sale.
Half a mile further is the Burk’s Falls
and District Museum opened in 1997
and is dedicated to the pioneers who
first settled in this area. The museum
was built in 1893 as a school house and
carried on successfully for about 45
years. The museum recently acquired
the remnants of the old swing bridge
that once allowed large riverboats
passage along the Magnetewan River.
A two lane bridge was completed in
October 2004.
At 981 Midlothian Road is Midlothian
Castle and gigantic concrete sculptures
known as “Screaming Heads”. These
are the artistic creation of local artist
Mr. Peter Camani. Mr. Camani allows
visitors to enter his property to walk
about to view his sculptures. Mr.
Camani’s property hosts many outdoor
events and is the home of Midlothian
Valley Farm. Midlothian Valley Farm
operates on 7 acres of the property
devoted to organic agriculture. The
farm, in its 6th year, is operated by
the Tota family. A farm market is open
from June to October, where you can
purchase fresh vegetables, fruits,
preserves and home baked treats.
Midlothian Road continues to wind
through forest, farmland and 3 his-
torical grave yards ending at Nipissing
Road. At the corner is the Cornball
store, a convenience store well know for
home baked pies and pastries.
Turning right onto Nipissing
Road, one can enjoy the public
beach of Ryerson Township
on Ahmic Lake. Nippissing Road was
the first road leading travelers to the
north. This road will bring you to the
Village of Magnetawan. The Villiage of
Magnetawan is the home of the hand
operated Dam and locks that allow
boats passage from Cecebe to Ahmic
Lake. With the growing water traffic,
the need arose of a marker in the river
entering the locks and a lighthouse was
built. This lighthouse was restored
in 1995 by the Magnetawan River
Heritage Association and can be
viewed at the locks. Just beyond the
locks is a pristine public beach, picnic
area and local historical museum.
Magnetawan also offers a Farmer’s
Market on Saturday morning, from May
to October, at the Community Centre
outdoor skating rink.
Heading east out of Magnetewan on
Hwy 520 after crossing the Distress
River, there will be several access
points and look out points to Lake
Cecebe before arriving back at Burk’s
Falls.

Sixty-Five Years of Art
The Burk’s Falls Arts and Crafts is celebrating its 65th birthday this year. In 1950, 14 area painters joined together to form a club for recreational painters.
The group met in the basement of the United Church where
the membership quickly grew . A number of the new members were teenagers whose enthusiasm and vitality ensured the groups continuation.
The little group from a small northern village quickly began gaining recognition outside the Almaguin area. In 1956, Gladys Stuart and Helen Pink held an exhibition in the Odeon-Carlton theatre in Toronto and many of
the other members won acclaim in various juried exhibitions throughout the province.
In 1957 the Northern Ontario Art Association started its juried exhibition and the Burk’s Falls group was one of the first to be affiliated with it as they had joined 3 years previously.
Classes taught by respected instructors, lectures on art appreciation and workshops continued to add to the growth of the group and their influence in the provincial art scene.
A few of the featured artists “Killarney Rock” by Diane Millar, “Barred Owl” by
Sharon Stock Feren, “The Sugarbush” by Pauline Langmaid, and “Morning Sun” by
Mary Ann Miners

OUR CREATIVE COMMUNITY The Burk’s Falls Art & Crafts Club
As the group moved into the 90’s there was increasing interest shown in the club by those who practiced other forms of arts such as
knitting, wood carving, potters, quilting, jewellery and soap making. They are now an integral part of the group and evidence of the wide variety of artistic talent in the area.
In 2010, the club took another big step forward when they obtained the use of a historic building in downtown Burk’s Falls to display and sell their products. The Centre with its distinctive bright yellow awning quickly became a focus for tourists and others looking for a unique gift or something for their home. It is located adjacent to Stan Darling Park and the artists can often been seen working there on a painting while visiting with each other and those stopping to observe. They are always willing to encourage new painters or explain their technique.
Visitors to the Centre quickly realize that it is going to take much more than a few moments to see all of the articles located throughout the two floors of the building. Each one is encouraged to sign the guest book before leaving and there are few parts of the world that haven’t been represented at least once. The Centre is open from May until the end of September and then again for a Christmas sale in December.
The club now boasts approximately 50 members. Monthly meetings are held at the Burk’s Falls Royal Canadian Legion on the second Wednesday of each month. They have a Facebook page and are in the process of setting up a web site.
The Burk’s Falls area is fortunate to have the Arts and Crafts Club to contribute its talents to the community.
You can connect with the Burk’s Falls Arts and Crafts Club Arts Centre on Facebook atwww.facebook.com/BurksFallsArtAndCraftsClub

Historical Bluebird Theatre in Burk’s Falls, ON
In 1947, local businessman, Doug Wark,
brought Hollywood to Burk’s Falls when he
opened the Bluebird theatre. Located on the
main street of the village, it quickly became a
popular place for residents and tourists during
summer evenings and to escape the cold of
winter. State Fair was either the first or one of
the first movies to be featured. Some of the
movies shown had been partially filmed in the
area which made for another draw as residents
watched for familiar scenery.
After the passing of Mr. Wark, the Bluebird
was owned and operated by another family.
Then in 1982, the village bought the theatre
and moved the municipal offices to the front of
the building. The big double doors that were
used by generations of movie goers were now
employed by residents to gain access to the
offices and the entrance to the theatre was
moved to the side of the building. The cinema,
now known as The Towne Theatre continued
but as costs of heating the cinderblock building
was prohibitive it only operated in the summer
months.
The advent of Digital HD for movies made
the old reel format obsolete and the little
theatre faced another challenge. It seemed
that shutting the doors was a very real
possibility but with local fundraising efforts
and government grants a digital projector and
sound system was purchased.
In addition to movies, the building also hosts
live musical performances. Internationally
known entertainers such as Hawksley
Workman, Kevin Hearn of Bare Naked Ladies
fame, Imogene Heap, Wendell Furgeson and
Katherine Wheatley . Many local and area
musicians got their start standing in front of
the red curtains and sharing their talents.
The theatre also provides employment to the
area students. Many of them obtained their
first experience in interacting with the public,
being responsible for the concession stand as
well as the admittance fees.
The Towne Theatre is, in many ways,
indicative of the area in which it is located.
It has survived changes in technology,
entertainment preferences and economic
downturns because people care enough
to stick it out. Citizens, (and the municipal
governments) showed their support by
volunteering many hours of time as well as
money. The biggest factor of all, however, is
the spirit of the community. Working together
is not a new concept when you depend on your
neighbour. As the grand old gal embraces the
digital age, she does so without forgetting her
past and those who make her possible.

S panning over 175 kilometres from the
World Famous Algonquin Provincial
Park to the shores of Georgian Bay,
the Magnetawan River has played a crucial role in the early
settlement and development of the Southern Almaguin
Highlands. The ‘Mag’ was an essential trade route that allowed
steamships, such as The Armour, and other vessels to bring
new settlers and the necessities they required to start building
their new lives in Northern Ontario. Stopping at the various
museums within the villages attached to The Mag, such as the
Magnetawan Museum, will provide a deeper glimpse in to the
role that The Mag played in local history.
Today, The Mag serves a more recreational purpose to the
visitors and residents of the area. Beginning at the Government
Docks in Burk’s Falls, you can re-create the journey of the
historic steamships for yourself. Whether by canoe, kayak
or motorized boat, this route will take you through a piece of
our history as it winds over 40 kilometres through Midlothian
Lake, Lake Cecebe, Ahmic Lake and sections of untouched
Canadian Wilderness. Along the way you can see many historic
local landmarks including Pegg’s Mountain, Echo Rock on Lake
Cecebe, and the re-built lighthouse on the west end of Lake
Cecebe. Before continuing through to Ahmic Lake via the Lift
Locks you can stop at the docks in Magnetawan for a rest or to
take a tour of the village.
The Mag continues where Ahmic Lake empties through Knoepli
Falls. Past this point, canoers and paddlers can access the
Magnetawan River Loop (North and South Branches) which
can be found on the Canadian Canoe Routes website. Along
this route there are various rapids such as the Poverty Bay
Chutes and Cody Rapids that will challenge even the the most
experienced paddlers. Make sure to plan your route carefully
before embarking on your journey!
If you’re looking for your next ‘big catch’, The Mag is home to
a variety of species of fish including Bass, Catfish, Perch, Pike,
Trout and many more. Don’t forget to keep your eye out for the
many great locations for swimming as well! The Mag has some
great swimming spots to cool off during your trip.

“ If you wake up and that liquid sunshine is flowing into your day stop and say to yourself....Road trip!!!! “
oh no... it’s Raining
Y ou see, I don’t see rain the same as everyone else! I see rain as an opportunity to explore!
If you wake up and that liquid sunshine is flowing into your day stop and say to yourself. . . . Road Trip!!!! This is your day to find out just what is out there in the Almaguin Highlands. So lets imagine that day has arrived and you are looking at a pile of gloomy faces and wondering what there is to do around here!
The Almaguin Highlands run from approximately the town of Novar to the south and the town of Powassan to the north. The majority of the main centres are just off the Hwy 11 corridor. This area of Ontario I believe is the best kept secret. We are not Muskoka and we are not North Bay. . . .but we are the delightful area in between.. . . .so come let’s “ Celebrate Almaguin”.
Let’s start our rainy day journey together by picking an area to the south. We will travel north through some of these very interesting stopping points. So let’s do our road trip on a rainy through the “Villages of Almaguin”. I will pick Kearney to begin with. In the town there is a downtown park on the lake ( and let’s not forget the entrance to Algonquin Park is right there!). Do you remember the days of “frogging” in the park? Put your boots and coat on and go hunting along the shoreline you might just find more than frogs! Bring a bucket! Travelling west the highway towards Emsdale take a turn on Fern Glen Road and follow it along to Brooks Falls. Rain or no rain it’s worth seeing and there is a great playground there too! Now, off we go to Katrine. Stop into the general store and pick up some hot drinks and a treat and head off to the park on Doe Lake east to the town of Sprucedale. Doe Lake! Yes that’s where the Girl Guides of Canada host their Camp! Take a look! Rain never stops children from running and trying out equipment!

oh no... it’s Raining
Our next stop is Burk’s Falls. To me this is the most historic town of all the towns. This town boasts of having two things other towns do not have and that’s a theatre and bowling lanes! What great fun on a rainy day. The arena offers summer skating and day camp programs.
The library is open for borrowing books or what about renting an old time movie! The internet is free and available for use. I know the librarian there can fill your day with exciting programs and books! There are art centres on Main Street that display lots of local artists, and that’s always fun to see unique and interesting takes from creative minds! This is your chance to take home a keepsake of the area. Burk’s Falls has a covered walking
bridge right next to the art centre and at the end of the bridge stop in and try one of the tasty butter tarts in the Information Centre!
Travel west on Hwy 520 to the village of Magnetawan. Just before you get there you have a chance to visit one of the many museums in the area on Midlothian Road. If you continue down that road you will see something your eyes will not be able to believe. . .it’s called the “Screaming Heads.” This is a piece of land owned by a retired artist who created from cement sculptures on his property that you have to see to believe! Alrighty back to the Hwy 520 and continue west to Magnetawan. Maybe this is the day of their Farmer’s Market. Each town has one and they
are on different
days, check the web site!
These markets sell fresh produce and local handicrafts. . . .might even meet the town council out shopping! In Magnetawan there is a lock system in use that allows small boats to travel down the Magnetawan river, it’s a very interesting science to watch how that happens! Next to the lock system is the Lions park on the lake. This park has swimming and play equipment for all ages, Participaction Canada set up some workout equipment to keep us all in shape and if you move fast enough you wont get wet!
Rain or shine you can put on a rain coat and travel the adventuresome routes.

Back east to Hwy 124 to “Sunny” Sundridge, yes they boast this title so rain or shine . . . .its sunny! The town sits by Lake Bernard which is the largest freshwater lake in Canada without an island.
Great beaches which has a new Splash Pad that is right downtown! Its only rain you can swim in rain! There is a historical house as you enter town that has staff that will take you back in time of the founding of the town. The drive around Lake Bernard will take you past a wonderful look out called High Rock. . . .then over to a great sandy beach to build castles in the rain. . . . .and back to the town for lunch at one of the many restaurants. Its a circle drive.
Let’s head north on Hwy 11 to our next town of South River. I always think of South River as the place to see the arts! This town also hosts an entrance to Algonquin Park. Eagle lake is just west of the town with a great sandy beach for kids and a narrows that pleasure boats go by. . . .and let’s not forget a great place to get ice cream! Back in town if you follow the road to Algonquin Park you will go by Tom Thompson park. . . .disc golf any one???
Let’s travel north to Trout Creek. There is a Seniors Centre in the town that prides itself in making quilts! Stop in and see if there is anyone working today. They love to share their stories and have partnered with children to share their skill. There is a real quaintness of this town.
Further north on the hwy is our last stop and that’s Powassan. I think I love Powassan for all their walking trails. Rain or shine you can put on a rain coat and travel the adventuresome routes! Throughout the whole area you can search for artists’ studios to visit and learn. The library hosts many events for children and adults and usually have a community show downstairs!
I realize some of these stops in our road trip seem like sunny day things to do but a lot can be done in the rain! Don’t let the weather keep you inside. Each town is ready for your visit whatever the weather brings! So don’t sit inside saying “oh no it’s raining!”. . . .say “ great it’s raining we can go exploring!”
The “villages of Almaguin”are waiting for you!

We hope you enjoyed your tour!
This driving tour is made up of paved and gravel roads and is guaranteed to have something for everyone. Along the way you will pass many places to eat or shop, so make sure to take plenty of time to enjoy the different adventures. Don’t hesitate to stop and check things out! We welcome you to heart of Undiscovered Cottage Country.
We start at the traffic lights in South River, home of Groovy Glass Beads (lampwork glass art) and Corner Wines. Turn East on Ottawa Ave. and drive for two blocks, turn left (north) onto Isabella St. Follow Isabella as it turns into Mill Rd. You can’t miss the two bridges and dam on the South River. After the second bridge, turn around and head back into town. When you get back to Ottawa Ave., turn left (east), past Chocpaw Expeditions (largest dog sled tour company) , The Bear Chair (drop in buy a chair), Highlander Brewery (open for tours), Black’s Guest House and Nature Natives Art Gallery, about 2.9 Km to the entrance of Tom Thompson park.
Tom Thompson Park is the home of the Almaguin Disc Golf Course and boat launch. When you leave Tom Thompson Park turn left, and travel out over the causeway to enjoy some fantastic views of the South River. Now turn around again and head back into town. From Ottawa Ave. turn left on Ena Ave. (just past Chocpaw) and left again (south now) onto Broadway Ave.
Follow Broadway until it turns into Sand Hill Rd. Sand Hill Rd. will cross Peacock Rd. Turn right (west) on Peacock Rd. and you will see the ‘dog yard’ for Chocpaw Expeditions. Peacock Rd. ends at the S&J Boundary Rd. Turn Left (south) and follow the Boundary Rd. to its end at Forest Lake Rd. Turn right (west) and follow until you come into Sundridge.
The Lions Park, in downtown Sundridge (food and shopping) has a government dock, public washrooms, beach, playground and splashpad. From here continue south down Main St. Over the railroad tracks and turn left on Mill St. Further down take a left onto Albert St. which you will follow until you come to High Rock Rd. Turn left, cross the tracks again and you will come to High Rock Lookout and Picnic area. This spot affords beautiful views of Lake Bernard.
From High Rock turn left and head back into Sundridge. Stay on Albert St. this time across Highway 124 and through town, past G.F. Preston’s (if you need a bulldozer) until you get to Hill Valley Road. Turn Left on Hill Valley and cross over Highway 11, continue west. Turn right on Hornibrook Rd. (north) until it ends at M&S Boundary Road. Turn left (west) on the Boundary Rd. and right (north) onto Park Rd. Park Rd. travels past the Hockey Opportunity Camp and Mikisew Provincial Park. Turn right at the end of Park Rd. and follow Eagle Lake Rd. to ‘the Narrows’. There is an excellent swimming area here and the ice cream at the Narrows Store is the best! Continue following Eagle Lake Road east and you will come magically back to the traffic lights in South River. PHOTOS ABOVE:
