The Forum is for the community and the community needs a voice, so our letters page will give you the freedom to speak.

The first Sunday monthly market will be on 12th December 2010 when we hope to have a Christmas style market, and the Town Trust hope that residents of Alresford and beyond will support this new venture. If it is a success, we will work to holding a monthly Sunday market on the 2nd Sunday of every month, other than the months when the French and Italian markets will be held. A Community Party for The Pigs

As exclusively announced in the Forum last month, the Pigs have been

chosen by the Alresford Co-op as the recipient of their ‘Community Support Card’. This means that when shoppers show, and have their community card swiped instore, a proportion of their spend will be paid back to the Pigs (at the end of the year) for re-investment back into the local community.

Celebrating the start of their ‘donations year’ a Community Launch Party was held at the Alresford Community Centre on Saturday 13th November. On a cold, but fine day, over 150 people came along to enjoy the celebrations. A delicious (and suitably apt) hog roast was provided by

almost £1,200 has already been raised, which shows the popularity of the Association within the town."

Responding on behalf of the Alresford Pigs 'Chair Pig' Andrew Thorne said,”

Soles Butchers, with Cresson Creative offering equally mouth watering alternatives of watercress burgers, sausages and other savoury delicacies. Liquid refreshments were taken care of by the ladies and gentlemen of the Alresford Community Association.

A range of family entertainment was enjoyed on the day including a band, face painting, magician, balloon sculpture and a host of arts and crafts courtesy of the local Sunbeams Children’s Centre.

With a great sense of community spirit and fun, the Co-operative’s Deputy Manger Dave Dilley donned a ‘party pig’ outfit for the afternoon and is seen above kicking off the event along with Pigs, Mike Powell, Ian Fry, Rob Sanders and David Learmonth.

Speaking at the launch, Derek Hawkins, Store Manager at Alresford Co-operative, said, "We are really delighted that the Alresford Pigs have been chosen to benefit from our scheme this time around. They were nominated as it was felt that they provide such a great deal of support to many worthy causes in the area”Derek went on to add that “The target this year is to raise £15,000, and to date

Alresford Town Council Reports

Year end accounts for 2006/7 and 2007/8The Audit Commission has finally signed off New Alresford Town Council’s accounts for 2006/7 and 2007/8. Following complaints made by Mr. Robin Atkins and Mrs. Pam Stevens the Audit Commission have, after three years of investigation, given the Council a clean bill of health. The District Auditor decided the accounts were not contrary to law but made the following recommendation which were considered by the Council:

Auditor’s RecommendationIn the view of the Auditor the Council currently has loans which are not represented by equivalent capital expenditure and it should:• Establish the cost of early repayment of part of the loan• Consider the equity of the current position• Decide whether it should repay some of the PWLB loan so that the balance more closely matches the capital expenditure incurred.

Extract from Finance Chairman’s reportThe Auditor’s view is not based on any matter of fact, or documentation, either before or after the event. The reasonable interpretation is that the PWLB loans were obtained to cover the capital cost of the new extension, supported by the Football Foundation Grant which was given with some conditions (all met), but none limiting the use of that grant to capital expenditure. Similarly, the money held in reserve was not specifically earmarked for capital expenditure. There has never been any question of taxpayers money being improperly used and it should

be noted that, if the Auditor’s view could be regarded as in any way reasonable, under the financial stewardship of Mr. Atkins the previous Council spent up to £70,000 that they didn’t actually have, when in reality they had insufficient funds to meet their then current liabilities. It should be remembered that the Council had incurred substantial and growing legal costs and liabilities, rooted in Mr. Atkins legal actions for libel, and as a result during the following financial year the Council had insufficient funds to meet its actual liabilities.

It has taken three years for the Audit Commission to come to this conclusion, albeit they have given the Council a clean bill of health as to its interpretation and presentation of the 2006/7 accounts. It could be argued that they have been negligent in their handling of this matter having prevaricated for some two years before finally becoming pro-active. The final cost to this Council and, therefore, the taxpayer, has yet to be finalised but it should be noted that Mr. Atkins said that the Council’s provision of £5000 was completely inadequate to cover the cost of handling the complaints made by him and Mrs. Pam Stevens for the 2006/7 year alone. The burdening of the Alresford Taxpayer with high costs continues with the Council having to bear a high administration overhead in handling the unabated stream of complaints from the same source.

Council ReviewThe Council decided not to accept the Audit Commission recommendation and thereby would not be making any early repayment of the loan.

In rejecting the Auditor’s recommendation the Council were mindful of the following.

It was established that the penalty cost would be £8,700 for early repayment of £69,000. It was thought to be unfair to burden taxpayers with the penalty of £8,700. Also the Council would have to either borrow the money to repay the loan or substantially increase the precept.

The PWLB loans were taken to cover the capital cost of the new extension and supporting funds from the Football Foundation Grant and earmarked reserves were not limited to funding capital expenditure. The total borrowed from PWLB funding was sought only to cover capital expenditure and all other expenditure was sourced from supporting funds which was not limited to capital costs.The full text of the Auditor’s report and recommendations together with the Finance Chairman’s report and the formal press release can be viewed at www.newalresfordtc.org.uk/audit.htm

Alresford Recreation CentreThe refreshment facility at the ARC has shown a significant loss during the summer months and steps have been taken to stem this deficit. Staffing of the facility is being more tightly controlled and levels of wastage are being more effectively monitored. The bar is known to be more popular during the sporting season which has now commenced. It is hoped that income will increase during the winter months, but if this proves not to be the case the facility may be forced to close at the end football season. The ARC is available to everybody although there is still a

perception that it is a member’s only club. Since the Council has taken over the running of the facility the Centre is no longer members only and ALL ARE WELCOME. Now the ARC has been open for over a year we will be reviewing room charges for 2011. The Council will undertake a full financial review in April next year when a decision will be taken on whether it can continue to run this facility on behalf of the community. PLEASE uSE IT OR LOSE IT.

Blood TestsWe have been unable to make any progress recovering the phlebotomy time which has been reduced by Royal Hampshire County Hospital. will be able to organise this without a delay.

more. Although these paths all offer different routes into and views of the beautiful landscape, they all have one thing in common: they are well used. Very well ‘used’ in fact - as places where seemingly dogs can defecate to their hearts' content and their owners have no compunction about cleaning up.

These paths are peppered with poo, strewn with….. , well there are plenty of descriptive expletives, and it doesn’t stop there. I suppose people think they can get away with not clearing up on a rough track. As if that wasn’t bad enough, (presumably) the same offenders adopt a similar attitude on New Farm Road, along The Avenue, on Stratten Bates, and Arlebury Park football pitches, bringing a whole new perspective to the ‘sliding tackle’.

You would think, wouldn’t you, that having your dog ‘mess’ on the pavement in Alresford town centre, or in the churchyard in full view of others, would shame owners into clearing up. Well you would be wrong.

They couldn’t care less. Even the pavement outside Sun Hill School is not immune despite the well documented dangers of disease that could, potentially, be passed on to young children.

There are, of course, plenty of responsible people who clear up after their dogs and either take it home in tell-tale bags, or pop it into the red bins provided by the council. Whilst it’s not a pleasant job to pick up fresh doggy droppings, it’s actually worse having to scrape it off children’s shoes, buggy wheels, bike tyres and wellies.

Why should the rest of us have our enjoyment of the countryside ruined by an uncaring minority?

A dog is not just for Christmas: it’s for clearing up after too.

possibly with some apprehension.

Everyone has occasions that they particularly await, maybe just to break the monotony of everyday life, or we may think to help relieve the pressures we face, or meetings with family members-and sometimes these occasions can sometimes be all too infrequent because of our busy schedules.

Surely Christmas is one such time that we await: some with eager anticipation; some may be with reservation, or even resignation; especially if we don't accept or understand the reason for it.

Christmas is a time when above all else, and despite all else, essentially we remember the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ into this world.

Television or radio. Of the selection of readings, most important are the Bible readings, and significantly the quotations from the Old Testament, where we read (or hear) that the birth of Christ was foretold 700 years before it actually occurred. The Apostle John, in his Gospel account, was inspired to write these words: ''the Word (Jesus) was God...and the Word was revealed (made known) in the flesh''-ie He was born at Bethlehem in Israel, now 2000 years ago. The Old Testament prophecy was fulfilled when Jesus came into the world.

Is there any significance or importance to all this? Another Gospel writer, Matthew, says: ''you shall call His Name 'Jesus', for He shall save His people from their sins'. We know as we continue reading through the Gospels how He can do that. We know that Jesus was taken and put to death on the Cross, outside of the city walls of Jerusalem. The Bible account continues: ''and on the third He rose again...''. Then we know why He did it: ''For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son (Jesus), that whoever believes in

Him should not perish, but have eternal life.''

We don't need to celebrate Christmas not knowing or not understanding what it all means. John the Apostle goes on in His Gospel: ''to all who receive Him and believe on His Name, He (Jesus) gives us the right to be His children...''. We can actually have that kind of close and personal relationship with Him, when we confess our need, and ask His forgiveness, and receive Him into our lives.

May we all have a truly Happy Christmas and New Year, whatever our circumstances may be, as we experience the difference Jesus can make in us as we call upon Him. 24 recipe of the Month

This is another great way to use up any surplus game birds. Chestnuts are very

much under rated, but they are so good for you! This soup is extremely delicious and freezes very well.

Method: Bouillon/StockFry all the vegetables in two spoons of olive oil or goose/duck fat. Add the birds, cover them with water and dissolve the stock cubes in it. Let the ingredients simmer slowly in the pan for 5 hours.

Strain the bouillon/stock, no reduction is necessary, make sure you keep the birds aside.The vegetables do not need to be retained and can be thrown away. Dice the bird breast into small pieces and set aside.

Chestnut Preparation:If you are using fresh chestnuts then plunge them into salted boiling water for 30 minutes to remove the skins then refresh in cold water.

With your prepared fresh, pre-cooked or vacuum packed chestnuts keep quarter aside and puree the rest. Cut the remaining quarter into dices.

Method: The SoupPour the bouillon into a pan and add the pureed chestnuts. Mix carefully with a stick blender, letting it cook slowly until nice and warm. Add salt and pepper to taste. The consistency of the soup must be not too liquid but not too thick either.

Partridge or PheasantSoup with Chestnuts

In the plates or soup bowls sprinkle the reserved dices of chestnut and the bird’s breast then pour the soup over.You can add as much as you prefer. Finally add a half a soup spoon of thick cream or croutons. If you feel like it you can add both.This is a great alternative for Christmas lunch or New Years Eve‘s dinner. A great tip is to add some grated truffle during the second cooking for that extra special touch!

Well, it has to be done. Having gorged the previous day,

on Boxing Day copious amounts of fresh air and exercise are required, to clear out the tubes as it were - so here’s an idea for an effortless (well, relatively) six-mile walk, which is certainly suitable for dogs, hardy rellies and children alike.

At the end of the Avenue in Alresford opposite the turning to New Farm Road, stroll gently down Drove Lane (yes it's downhill!). Follow the road around the bends and up the hill, taking in the views over Arlebury Park House as you go, until you reach a T-junction. Here, turn left up the hill (sorry, but it’s not the steepest you’ll encounter) and follow the road to the farm. There will be a large white farmhouse on your right, and various cottages and some farm buildings nestling into a valley to your left.Follow the road around the bend, and you rise up to the old burial mounds situated on both sides of the narrow road: there are often lovely black cattle grazing here.

Drop down into the hamlet of Abbotstone, where the

Boxing Day Walkroad goes over the river, and more cattle graze the meadows on either side. By the thatched cottages there is a small triangular piece of grass with a sign post on it: take the left-hand road signed to Itchen Stoke. This hill is steep, but once at the top of ‘Folly Hill’ you’ll have beautiful views all around, so it’s well worth it. Continue along this road, past the farm on your right, and down into Itchen Stoke.

You will come to a T-junction with the B3047. There’s a church on your left which if open, is well worth a look. At this junction you have two options. If you cross straight over the road you can follow the footpath that takes you along beside the beautiful River Itchen and thence to ‘The Bush’ (make sure you get the timing right for opening hours!).

However, if you are abstaining, then cross the road and turn left following the pavement until, opposite the farm, there is a turning to your right. This will take you down to a ford, perfect for wellies, but with a little footbridge too. Cross over or wade through, then weave your way around the front of the mill house to the next

T- junction, pausing to look at the river en route.Turn left and continue along the narrow road. You will have the river on either side of you now, and if you return in the spring, the bank to your right will be carpeted with snowdrops, whilst in the autumn the beech trees provide a tunnel of amber

as you climb the steep, long hill. Sorry, but it is the last one!

Once at the top, you will need to cross the A31 and then walk down the hill and under the railway bridge, back into Alresford.

Six year 9 boys and one year 10 boy from Perins School have been selected

for some exciting Scouting Expeditions. Tom Street, Chris Fry, Triss Morris, Ryan Cooper, Ben Malam and Richard Blizzard are all travelling to Sweden next August for two weeks to take part in the 22nd World Jamboree. The main aims of the Jamboree are Meetings, Nature and Solidarity.

Participants will get to know those who live outside their local community and find that strangers can become friends. They will use the natural environment as a learning tool, demonstrating both its vulnerability and what individuals can do to better for the world we live

in. The Scouts will encourage solidarity between scouts of all ages. It is hoped that they will learn that we all share a common responsibility to our world and each other. Bish Clow has been selected to travel to Denmark to take part in an International Camp with an emphasis on learning outback survival skills and sustainability with Scouts from all over the world. He will also spend one day visiting and taking part in the Swedish Jamboree.

Perins Scouts raising funds for World Jamboree

Since all the boys go to different Scout Troops but attend Perins School they are calling themselves the “Perins Expedition Scout Team” or PEST for short. They have been doing much of the needed fundraising together as a group with a quiz night in Perins hall in October and a Gang Show in St. Johns Church on Sat 13th November. The boys are also trying to raise funds so that Scouts from every country in the world have the chance to attend the Jamboree. A solidarity fund has been established within The Scout Association, called Operation One World, to help Scouts who have economic difficulties participate in the Jamboree. This will ensure that all recipients have everything they need to fully

participate. The boys recently organised a Free Dress Day at Perins to raise funds for Operation One World and they talked about the reasons for their fund raising during an assembly. It's Christmas,but not as we know it!A

re you familiar with this Christmas scene? Effortlessly beautiful women relax clad in velvet, their chisel-

jawed men casual in cashmere jumpers and toning scarves, with delighted laughter coming from their wide-eyed, scrubbed-clean cherubic children. They reside, naturally, in a country pile, its drive lined with trees festooned in white lights; a huge wreath bedecks the oak front door, and inside there’s a garland and a golden retriever with every fireplace, and to complete the scene, Cath Kidston stockings hang above the Aga.

The lady of the house, despite preparing for Yuletide feasting since early November, has still found time to do Christmas crafts and baking with her excitable brood - and although the family’s social calendar has been an absolute whirl, she has still managed to lose half a stone. Her taxing Christmas Eve is spent taking delivery of luxury essentials from Fortnum and Mason, select wine merchants and that lovely cheese shop in Bath, before the first guests arrive bearing exquisitely wrapped gifts.

God bless us every one... for being so thoroughly patronized by the Christmas issue of magazines various.

The Pagan family festivities are a little different - take last year...

On the first weekend in December, Husband and Stars I and II went to their usual purveyor of the finest Christmas trees in the vicinity, vowing to ‘be sensible this year and get a small one’. They returned with sheepish grins and a tree approaching giant redwood proportions - as the Husband dragged it through the hall I’m sure I saw Chip and Dale clinging to the top branches.Once the net had been removed we discovered that not only was

it seven feet high, but it was also eight feet wide.

“Don’t stress, Sandra. We’ll move the book case and I’ll cut the top out of the tree, oh, and shape up the branches so it fits in the corner. Sorted.” Whilst Stars I and II argued about who should put the fairy on the top, I slunk off to do some more wrapping.

Christmas heralds the busiest week of my working calendar. Christmas Eve was, as ever, sacrosanct, but the three working days prior to that were the usual ten or twelve hours long. Stars I and II (obviously at state school otherwise they would have been home since October), broke up for the holidays the weekend before Christmas. A well-practiced military campaign swung into action and fellow working Hampshire Mums were picking up and dropping off kids all over our market town and managing to fit in ice- skating at our local cathedral city. All went well, as ever.

On Christmas Eve, with the house not unlike a festive grotto, all the pressies wrapped, all the cards sent long ago… except for…oh my god I’d forgotten… ooops, too late… it was now time for the first Pagan festive tradition: the early morning pilgrimage to that shrine of Christmassy culinary consumption in our local cathedral city which is the food order section of Marks and Spencer.

Star I had come over all helpful and offered to help collect the boneless turkey and large garnish pack (major attack of inadequacy had caused me to secrete the ready-made gravy and bread sauce at the back of the freezer some weeks before). As we stood in the queue we became acutely aware that turkey was so last season and that lobster and shellfish platters were the alternative to the humble roast fowl. Regardless, with the words ‘Pagan - large

turkey’ echoing in our ears we set off to the lovely olive stall.

Star I, having stoically offered to carry the food, declared it to be “really heavy Mum,” and so took to dropping it to the ground every hundred yards or so; even if my chosen bird had its bones intact they would surely have been crushed by the impact.

Once home, at Eve’s end, Stars I and II got the sudden urge to go to bed early. Despite the fact that Star I “didn’t believe in Father Christmas any more,” he encouraged Star II to sleep, otherwise “he wouldn’t come.” Happy in the knowledge that we had left a carrot, mince pie and, on the Husband’s insistence, a large Scotch for Santa, they retired contentedly to bed.For a brief moment we too resembled a magazine depiction: the Husband and I settled down with some fizz in the glow of the log fire, searching for the purple ones in the large tin of ‘Quality Street’, just about to watch a traditionally bad film on the TV, when… it dawned on me. The immaculate in-laws were coming. Panic set in. All the in-laws, although very lovely, are all very immaculate. We Pagans – sadly - are not. Like a condemned woman I took my last gulp of champagne (or was it cava?). Where was I to start?

Right, bleach the loos, polish the top of the shower cubicle, dust, hoover everything including the tree and the cutlery draw, set the table, and prep the veg… Oh why were we so messy? Beads of perspiration had formed on my furrowed brow as I took a knife to my wrist, er I mean, bag of sprouts. I dispatched the Husband, who by then was full of Christmas cheer, to the darkest recess of the cupboard under the stairs to retrieve the children’s pressies. Having thrown them under the tree, he ordered, “Come and sit down love, you look knackered!”

Funny that, it was only half past twelve.

Early on Christmas morning I was to be found reading the instructions on the box containing the turkey: ‘Remove foil tray from box …’ - “Oh for god’s sake if you can’t manage to do this, how thick are you? "This isn’t any insult; this is an M&S Christmas insult with extra glitter.” Seemed a bit harsh, but anyway, into the oven it went and, as it was half past seven, I thought I would put the sprouts on to boil as well.

The Pagan Christmas morning passed in a flurry of wrapping paper and excited “thank you’s,” and the realization that we were very fortunate. Star II was amazed that Santa’s’ white footprints were still to be seen on the hearth, whereas a slightly cynical Star I was unimpressed: “Come off it, Mum, it’s obviously flour.” The house was, once again, in a mess, but I decided to leave the paper and packaging around, not least because it disguised a nasty stain on the carpet - and you know what? I cared not a jot.

The rellies arrived and, once plied with alcohol, didn’t seem to notice that we Pagans live in a pickle. Albeit the sprouts were somewhat past their best, we sat down to a hearty Christmas lunch which, despite my best efforts, managed to put one in mind of the gastronomic equivalent of roadkill – strikingly dissimilar to the beautifully displayed festive magazine spreads. The Husband happily played the role of entertainer as he attempted to ignite the pudding with a blow torch and I force-fed the grandparents with Baileys.

A happy afternoon followed, full of Pagan festive frivolity with lashings of Lego and games galore. No doubt this year will be the same.

I can’t believe that we are approaching the Christmas period with such speed! This time

of year is so busy with lots of exciting things to do, people to see, lists to write, parties to attend, presents to buy; the list seems endless. There are times when it feels as though it will never all be done in time but, like last year and the years before that, somehow it all comes together.

Take some time out and enjoy some special time with your little ones. They may be asking for the most expensive toy on the market for Christmas, but the best gift you could give them is some time together.

Christmas Tree FestivalSunbeams has sponsored a tree this year, which will be decorated in creations made by children who attend Sunbeams sessions. The festival runs from 8 – 13 December and is held in St John’s Parish Church, Alresford. Please visit the church during this period, as it is a magical sight, with many beautifully decorated trees.

Sunbeams RegistrationsTo date, we have 262 children registered with Sunbeams. There are approximately 813 children under 5 living within the Sunbeams catchment, so it would be lovely to have some more children registered. Registration is free and you receive a free goody bag. Community NewsRodney... Rodney Who? ... Rodney of Alresford!

If you know someone called ‘Rodney’, do you know how the name originated? Do you

know its connection with Alresford?Quite a lot of questions!

The answer is that the name derives from that of George Brydges Rodney, better known as Admiral Lord Rodney, who bought himself the property of Old Alresford House in about 1748 with the proceeds of the ‘prize money’ he received after the end of the War of the Austrian Succession [1740-1748].

He was born in London in 1718 just before his father lost most of his money in the South Sea Bubble [this was a wild speculation on

the stock exchange]. Of course some people made fortunes too; a Mr. Guy built Guy’s Hospital in London with some of his profits! He married Jane Compton, the daughter of the Earl of Northampton in 1753; sadly, after bearing him three children she died in 1757 and there is a fine marble memorial to her in Old Alresford church. The Rodney family came from Rodney Stoke in Somerset, not far from Cheddar. George’s early naval career involved actions in the Mediterranean and the ‘Western Approaches’ to the English Channel. Later he achieved some fine victories against the French fleets, predominantly in the West

Indies during the period of the Seven Years War 1756-1763; there is an amazing statue to him in Spanish Town, Jamaica. During the War of American Independence [1775-1783] he defeated a Spanish fleet off Gibraltar and thereby saved ‘The Rock’ from invasion and went on to defeat the French when they tried to attack New York. However he became ill in 1781 and had to return to England; subsequently the British fleet was defeated in the Battle of Chesapeake Bay and this led to the surrender of the land forces at York Town. A grateful nation created him Baron Rodney in 1782 and it was his fame

and exploits as a Royal Navy officer that caused his surname to become a popular first name at the end of the 18th century, and since. His life was very much a rollercoaster ride of ‘rags to riches’ and back again; fortunately his final years restored his fortune! He died in London 1792 and was buried in Old Alresford, having at one time or another been an M.P. for Saltash, Penryn and Northampton as well as performing his naval duties.

40 The Plot Thickens

To say I am a bit fussy about my Christmas tree would, I admit, be a

rather large understatement. I am woman enough to own that I am totally precious about it; it’s probably not my most becoming character trait. Now approaching its ninth year, our Christmas Tree Ritual begins with choosing the tree itself; a very involved process. First we spend a few days trying to remember exactly when we got the tree last year and how soon we can reasonably have a tree that isn’t stick bare by Christmas Day. Then we select and visit a garden centre where my husband pulls out various, apparently quite prickly and heavy, trees which I then summarily dismiss on grounds of shape, height, odd bits poking out and so on. (He has never been quite forgiven for the year he went alone and brought back the split-trunk tree. I really tried very hard not to raise an eyebrow every time I saw it, honest!) This is accompanied by the annual discussion on which type of

tree we prefer; I’m confident it’s Blue Spruce, but I stand to be corrected. Annually.

This adventure generally takes a whole afternoon as the tree is carefully selected, diligently wrapped and delicately carried by the garden centre staff and then pushed and shoved into the back of the Picasso by us; always with one end at such an angle that I can just about squeeze in to the passenger seat if I sit sideways and duck slightly. At home we then spend an hour or so getting it perpendicular in the heavy duty but worryingly wobbly tree stand, check it from every angle, tighten the bolts, remove the branch wrapping and find it has a definite lean - which we annually decide to ignore. It, and the carpet, is given a thorough watering and it is left to settle into its new surroundings.

A few days later I suddenly remember that the tree is still there, silently waiting to be dressed and quite probably shedding its first few needles in protest at the neglect. A quick confer with the husband and the evening is set – he settles down with a ritual whisky and a paper whilst I begin the decoration. It all starts with the lights, which I untangle, put on, swear at, take off, redo, pull about a bit and they finally

end up looking passable. By this time my arms are scratched and itchy, I have knelt on pine needles that really shouldn’t be there yet and I am rapidly losing the will to live. My husband glances up from his paper and passes me my sherry. And there I stand, surveying the boxes of red ribbon, wooden decorations, corn-dollies and garlands that cover the floor and the coffee table.

Yes dear reader, my tree is a tinsel free zone; definitely no twinkly baubles, absolutely no glitter. And, now that we have children this is becoming tougher, no handmade kids’ decorations. They all have their place, goodness knows we like our kitsch. Just not on my tree. If it’s not made out of wood or corn it’s not allowed on, and even then it has to undergo my personal vetting process. I am so precious about it that our daughter has her own pink fibre optic tree in her bedroom, adorned with

all manner of glittery fairies and sparkly bits. From the outside it makes me look like a Good Mummy, but now you know the awful truth. In fairness she did paint some lovely wooden decorations last year that are allowed on my tree, which I must remember to put higher up this year so that she cannot keep moving them to the front. I think this year my husband may well get his own tree for the log cabin and make sure he covers it in as much tinsel as it can handle without toppling over.

In my defence our Christmas tree is on show, taking pride of place in our bay window for all to see as they walk past on this busy pedestrian route. I get many admiring comments and even got one complaint when it could not be fully seen one year. My hard work, scratched arms and swearing are all worth it as I bask in the reflected glory. Yes, I admit, I am ridiculously, overtly and childishly proud of it. My family kindly indulge me in this little foible of mine. Well, that’s what Christmas is all about isn’t it?
