Letter Letter Letter from the from the from the MayorMayorMayor

Dear Friends, Happy harvest time. It’s that wonderful time of year

when we celebrate, with grateful hearts, the bounty of this earth and of our work.

This year, we certainly have a bountiful harvest and therefore, much to be thankful for, in Rosemont, Illinois. First of all, we are welcoming back two major trade shows---the “Halloween, Costume and Party” show, as well as a newly presented “Housewares and Variety” show---all from Joe Thaler and his team at Transworld, one of our most loyal trade show clients. These shows represent millions of dollars in economic impact to our area. During one of the worst economic downturns in modern history, when few organizations in the business travel category can even count any kind of pro ts, we are generating valuable revenues.

Also signi cant is the fact that we are responding to a healthy number of inquiries from developers.

The Allstate Arena continues to set new records, in terms of the bountiful number of events and concerts on its roster.

For those of you working directly in the hospitality and service industries, thank you for providing the highest quality of service. And for those of you whose work takes you in other directions, we know that you still cheer us on from the sidelines. Thank you for your support.

So this year, enjoy the rich colors of fall that we see, not only in the foliage that surrounds us, but in the bright lights that herald all the entertainment alternatives available to us, our families and valued guests.

With a most grateful heart, Bradley A. StephensMayorVillage of Rosemont, Illinois

Dear Friends, We join our mayor, the Hon. Brad Stephens,

in celebrating harvest time in Rosemont this year. While he is rightfully focused on business and development, we at the Stephens Center are thrilled with the reasons why one of our long time trade show clients has increased his company’s business in this building.

Joe Thaler, president, Transworld, is bringing back the “Halloween, Costume and Party” show, and is resurrecting the “Housewares and Vari-ety” show in 2010, at the Stephens Center. Mr. Thaler isn’t alone: The Stephens Center enjoys

a 93 percent rate of return business – nearly unheard of in our industry. Mr. Thaler’s reasons for returning are music to our ears and include:

• That customer service in Rosemont is so superior here, our clients and customers can’t even draw a distinction between our various service providers;

• that our staff is so accommodating and professional, that they work as a seamless team with our client’s own professional and administrative staff;

• that we at the Stephens Center, and indeed everyone who works in the hospitality industry in Rosemont, are smart stra-tegic thinkers (in Joe’s words, “they get it...”);

• that we roll out a real red carpet when we welcome our business partners;

• that we think about his tradeshows, not just when the cur-tain is ready to go up, but throughout the year;

• that Rosemont is the village that works!There’s no better endorsement than a customer who returns.

In fact, that compliment is rare. Renowned New York Invest-ment Banker Merrill Ring has told us that the Stephens Center is one of few convention centers with any new business, much less returning business.

For those of you who have not had the opportunity to attend a show or event at the Stephens Center in recent years, please review our schedule and come over to have the time of your life. Whether you are attending a public show for fun and en-tertainment, or ercely competing in one of America’s hottest marketplaces, we will make you feel special.

I join the mayor in celebrating autumn with a grateful heart for a terri c staff that consistently achieves excellence. I look forward to meeting and greeting you soon.

Best Wishes,Christopher R. StephensGeneral ManagerDonald E. Stephens Convention and Conference Center

Halloween, Costume and Party show returning to Stephens Center

‘Rosemont is our home’Christopher R. Stephens,

general manager, Don-ald E. Stephens Convention and Conference Center, and Joseph Thaler, president, Transworld Exhibits, have announced that Transworld’s renowned “Halloween, Cos-

tume and Party” tradeshow is returning to the Stephens Center, from February 26 to March 1, 2010, after having been held in Las Vegas for the past two years.

More than 30 years ago, Transworld was one of the Stephens Center’s earliest clients, when Transworld founded and established its massive Merchandise Show, as well as its Housewares and Variety Show and its Fashion, Jewelry and Ac-cessory Show. More than 26 years ago, the company’s leadership took its greatest risk yet when it extracted the Halloween, Costume and

Party section from the larger and highly successful House-wares and Variety Show.

“We decided to afford a marketplace for the buy-ers and sellers focusing on Halloween. Those pro ting from the Halloween holiday, complementary costumers and all kinds of party goods dealers seemed to be ready for their own small market-place opportunity. Little did we know then that we would be witnessing the growth of a segment into a $5 billion industry.”

Mr. Thayer explained that as the industry and show grew concomitantly, major

“There has been a strong pull on the buyer side to bring the tradeshow back to Rosemont,” explained Mr. Thayer. “Those of us at Transworld are delighted. Rosemont is our home. We run a number of our trade-shows here, because for us, Rosemont is the village that works. It has the convenience and the hometown feel that both our buyers and ex-hibitors appreciate. The red carpet is always rolled out for our people.”

“We are delighted to wel-come back Transworld and all their staff members, as well as their tradeshow ex-hibitors and buyers,” said Mr. Stephens. “It‘s a real home-coming when two teams have worked together for such a long time. Both of our organi-zations have a low employer turnover; so many of us know each other already and work together as a uni ed team. Talk about relationships!

“Transworld is a perfect example of the prevalence of repeat clients we have at the Stephens Center. While it is always a rush to book a new show, booking a returning show is especially sweet,” Mr. Stephens explained.

In addition to Halloween, Transworld will once again present the “Housewares and Variety Show” in July 2010 at the Stephens Center.

“There is a strong market-place for Housewares and Variety,” said Mr. Thayer. “Of

course, our company has been synonymous with that show. Our buyers have been telling us that there is a need for that show in that industry segment; they say there is a demand for a revived show featuring the newest mer-chandise.

He continued, “Chicago is the third largest market in the nation. Chicago buy-ers are the most consistent of all buyers, which builds con dence in the show, even while it’s still just in the planning phase. Rosemont’s cooperation has been enor-mous, whether it is Rosemont Catering, Rosemont Exposi-tion Services [RES is the Stephens Center’s in-house service provider] or the build-ing itself.”

“Joe Thaler and Transworld are so well established and have such an excellent repu-tation in this industry, that they can easily run several shows in a short timeframe,” Mr. Stephens explained. “That kind of ef ciency helps us all. It will generate more revenue for all of us. We end up being a value for every-one.”

When asked how he could be bringing two shows back to Rosemont in the midst of one of the worst economic downturns in modern history, Mr. Thayer acknowledged the challenge:

“After 40 years of doing business in this industry, I’ve never seen a downturn like this one – across all indus-tries. It affects travel, retail, convention centers, every single industry; therefore, it gives everyone hesitation and since banks aren’t lend-

is actively seeking to improve access to its road system in several key locations.

“Moving critical masses of people ef ciently always has been our challenge,” remarked the mayor. “Im-proving our roads and traf c ow has been the means to the end of continuing to grow business and economic devel-opment in Rosemont,” he ex-plained. “That’s why we have entered into an agreement with the Illinois Department of Transportation and the City of Chicago to complete the Balmoral Avenue Exten-sion Project.”

The mayor explained that the project is extending Balmoral Avenue west into Chicago O’Hare Interna-tional Airport, providing a

second airport entrance and exit access, as well as access to southbound Mannheim Road. Additionally, the vil-lage is working on an agree-ment with the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority to construct a northbound exit ramp from I-294 to Balmoral Avenue.

Rosemont of cials are actu-ally entering into a contract to purchase property in Chicago from two property owners whose land is neces-sary for the construction of the ramp.

Finally, the village is enter-ing into an agreement to pur-chase property on the south-west quadrant of Balmoral and I-294 to allow the village to create a development situ-ated in a prime area once the ramp and Balmoral Exten-sion have been completed.

“We were thrilled to be able to welcome so many Rose-mont residents,” said Mr. DuBrock. “We are experienc-ing a signi cant increase in interest, leading tours and signing up new members, as a result of the event and our sparkling refurbished facil-ity.”

Mr. DuBrock emphasized that it was the largest turn-

Convention center keys

Tradeshow and conven-tion experts agree: The best feature a convention center can have in tough economic

times is a highly function-al con-ference center.

The trade-show industry knows that dur-ing eco-nomically challeng-ing times, the rst item to

be cut out of corporate bud-get is business travel. Both for-pro t and not-for-pro t organizations send fewer representatives for shorter amounts of time. In other words, fewer delegates spend less time at smaller trade-shows, thereby generating lower revenues and making less of an economic impact.

“To offset the diminished tradeshow activity, an ac-cessible conference center is good to have in the mix,” said Bill Anderson, general man-ager, Rosemont Convention and Tourism Bureau. While a recession may cause activ-ity to decrease in the larger halls, it is maintained in the facile, convenient conference

centers. Conference center space seems less risky to the tradeshow managers and executives (in terms of book-ing), and more accessible (in terms of attendees). The conference center is particu-larly attractive to technologi-cal meetings which feature smaller displays.”

Mr. Anderson added, “That’s why it is so important for conference center venues to have:

great appeal, thanks to a generally warmer, more

home-like, inviting appear-ance as compared to the larger formal hall;

the ability to accommodate an array of groups, from continuing education series for doctors, lawyers, accoun-tants and other professionals, to craft seminars and much more;

the ability to feature the latest technologies that help attendees and exhibitors maximize ef ciencies and marketing activities there.

“The Stephens Center

“We are watching Rosemont Health and Fitness welcome new members and visitors every day, especially since the cool weather has arrived,” said Mr. DuBrock. “We know many of them had their in-terest piqued, thanks to this event.”

Mr. DuBrock made a point of thanking the restaurant donors, including Abruzzi’s, Café Zalute, Carlucci’s, Harry Caray’s and Rosati’s, who provided a whopping 119 piz-zas.

“We also salute Mayor Brad Stephens, Chris Stephens, general manager of the Don-ald E. Stephens Convention and Conference Center, and his staff, for their support and assistance,” said Mr. Du-Brock. “They provided valu-able services which made the event rst class, and we are very grateful to them.”

“It seemed easy to work off any excess pizza, either by dancing to the beats of the two featured bands – Con- nement and Loose Connec-tion – who provided non-stop entertainment until 10:30 p.m. Cartoonists entertained the children in an area where the in atables were set up and accessible for play.

“That area was particu-larly popular among parents who could relax, secure in the knowledge that we were providing their kids with a wide variety of safe but fun entertainment activities,” Mr. DuBrock added.

Mr. DuBrock said that the children’s play area repre-sented what the Rosemont Health and Fitness is all

about: fun and tness.“Whether a member is here

to have fun, or is a profes-sional athlete in training, whether he or she wants pri-vacy, or can’t wait to be a part of group or team play, we will be here to assist,” he said. “We have a stunning, techno-logically-forward facility, just waiting to be fully utilized by Rosemont residents, workers, and visitors alike.”

ing, it’s dif cult to be able to nance based on needs. Then there’s buyer hesitation because they cannot end up with surplus inventory.

“You have to be entrepre-neurial. Tradeshows are a microcosm of industry. The only difference is they are six months ahead of what is going to happen because the show is ahead of buying. Tradeshow behavior really is a predictor of consumer behavior.

“Even when times are tough, as a tradeshow com-pany, we take the risk and spend more money to ensure the show’s success because

it’s the only way to get over this kind of downturn – and that is exactly our approach for both the Halloween and the Merchandise shows. We also rolled back our prices in order to make it more bene -cial for exhibitors to purchase booth space. I don’t think they get the old fashioned feeling that everything’s go-ing to be all right. There’s an atmosphere of risk in Las Vegas. There is a cer-tain comfort level here. Plus,

Rosemont understands what it takes to make a tradeshow work. Other cities know it, too, but they don’t step up to the plate when they need to. Most cooperate, but here, it’s like family. Whether it’s Rosemont Catering, Rose-mont Exposition Services or the building itself, service is front and center at the Don-ald E. Stephens Convention and Conference Center,” Mr. Thayler concluded.

‘Rosemont is our home’

Rosemont in the news

• Acknowledging that the depressed economy has been challenging to deal with, Rosemont Mayor Bradley Stephens nonetheless laid out a litany of positives he and village leaders are work-ing on that they believe will generate dividends for the community’s future.

Tidbits of recent stories reported exclusively in the Journal & Topics Newspapers, publishers of the Rosemont Journal

Speaking to more than 100 members of the Rosemont Chamber of Commerce in Rosemont, Stephens said that despite their best efforts, the village was not able to convince the state to allow a new casino to operate there.

“We gave the casino our best shot and it wasn’t meant

to be,” said Stephens. “So now, we’re putting our best efforts into the entertain-ment district.”

According to Stephens, de-spite the bad economy, strong interest from restaurants and other businesses exist to not only develop the enter-tainment district but other

• Rosemont Village Board members took a signi cant step toward lessening the im-pact of traf c noise for some homeowners who live near Rosemont Elementary School along a stretch of Interstate 90.

Trustees approved an intergovernmental agree-ment with the Illinois Toll Highway Authority to remove a fence and clear out brush along the one-mile stretch of highway that connects the Jane Addams Tollway with O’Hare Airport. The mainte-nance work will clear a path for workers to install a new sound barrier.

• Representatives from LifeSource Blood Center vis-ited East Leyden High School and presented student coun-cil members with a $2,000 check for the organization’s successful 2008-2009 blood drives.

“During the 2008-2009 school year, we collected 249 units of blood from East Leyden – helping to save the lives of up to 747 people,” said Vicki Roge, LifeSource spokesperson. “That had an immense impact on the com-munity.”

Bill Mitchell, student coun-cil sponsor and a counselor at the East campus, said the school’s blood drives “have become a rite of passage for many of our students. It often means doing something brave – needles hurt – in

exchange for a T-shirt and the vague idea that some-where in the future someone will have lived because they received your blood.”

• The emergence of Red Light cameras in Rosemont is proving to be a nancial windfall for the village while at the same time promoting safer driving.

A fi fth Red Light Camera location is scheduled to soon be activated at Devon and River roads across from Des Plaines. That’s the same intersection that will handle much of the traf c head-ing into and away from the planned new riverboat casino that’s expected to open with-in the next two years.

Once that system is acti-vated, it will bring to ve the number of Red Light inter-sections in Rosemont.

• Representatives of Won-der Works, a unique science and industry museum best known for its upside down buildings, will visit the vil-lage of Rosemont to help determine if it one day will open an operation here.

According to Mayor Bradley Stephens, Wonder Works has expressed interest in opening a venue in Rosemont’s new entertainment district that’s located north of the Muvico Theater south to Balmoral Avenue. Stephens, who vis-ited the Wonder Works build-ing in Orlando, Fla., called the operation “very unique and entertaining.” Besides Orlando, a Wonder Works is in operation in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., which annually at-tracts 500,000 visitors.

Rosemont is in the process

of developing its new enter-tainment district that will be located east of the Tri-State Tollway. A new Toby Keith’s-

themed restaurant has al-ready agreed to locate and operate in the district.
