Discussions on the Opioid Epidemic

April 8-29

Sundays at 10am in the Chapel

Fifteen Ohioans die each day from the Opioid Epidemic. Sixty to Eighty percent of crimes are directly linked to drug addiction and more then fifty percent of children in foster care have at least one parent with a substance abuse disorder. This is a healthcare emergency that is fueled by poverty and inequality. As Christians we have a biblical responsibility to address this crisis and help those affected by it.

The Adult Faith Formation Committee will be hosting experts from local community organiza-tions to provide us information about the Opioid Epidemic. We will discuss causes and preven-tion, the nature of substance abuse and signs of substance abuse, and provide information on pro-grams available to those needing treatment and support.

As an Easter people we believe in the power of resurrection. That power can overcome the Opi-oid Crisis and we can help offer new life to those with substance abuse disorders.

Please contact Tim Bechtol on REALM or [email protected] with any questions or if you would like to help.

Faith Formation The tenth annual Cuisine For A Cause is in the books! The money we raised is desperately needed by the orphanage as they struggle to provide food, housing, clothing, medical care, education, and emotional and spiritual care for two dozen neglected, abandoned and abused children. Children are brought to the orphanage by local police and so-cial services workers, but the govern-ment does not provide any funding to help with their care. Instead, the direc-tors depend on individuals and church-es to contribute the necessary support. Cuisine For A Cause is the largest single fundraiser for the casa, and this year’s proceeds will cover all their expenses for about three months. On behalf of the children and their caretakers, I say “muchismo gracias y bendiciones para todos!”

It is not too late to make a donation to support this important ministry; just v is i t ht tp ://www.kingave.org/missions/cuisine-for-a-cause.html. Or, consider making a monthly contribu-tion. Contact the church office for de-tails. If you have any questions about the orphanage or Cuisine For A Cause, p l e a s e e m a i l c u i [email protected]. In the meantime, thanks for your support and please plan to attend next year!

A new chance to help young people.

Our Wednesday night Disciple II group shared ideas about how we might con-tinue to grow in Christ through new service opportunities. One option on our list was to serve young people that are regularly aging out of the fos-

ter care system. We have learned that one of the newer programs operating out of the Family and Youth Law Cen-ter at Capital University Law School is “CAMP”, Columbus Area Mentoring Program. The center piece of this sup-port organization is to match these young adults with a trained and vetted mentor who will provide the type of relational permanency that is critical for these emancipated youth to help make their journey to adulthood more successful. “CAMP” has agreed to cre-ate an extra training event for people that would like to learn more and con-sider becoming a mentor. If you think you might be interested in an oppor-tunity like this please contact Roger Blocher at [email protected].

Mentoring Matters

THANKS! LEADERS NEEDED TO LEAD GRATITUDE GROUPS Would you like to lead a small move-ment for more positive spir-

itual energy in your work-place or com-munity? If so, you might be just the right person to co-lead a Gratitude Group this summer in your neighborhood or workplace. Gratitude Groups will be brief 30-40 minute weekly gatherings, which can be held mid-week over lunchtime in a café, after work in a coffee shop, or in a neighborhood park. They will be easy for anyone to participate in and simple to lead. If you are interested in being trained to work with a partner to start and lead a gratitude group, there will be 3-5 sessions of Gratitude Group Leader training on Wednesdays, April 11 through May 9 from 7-8 pm in the Chapel. You can sign-up for the training by contacting Rev. Colleen Ogle.

NEEDED: COMMUNION ASSISTANTS It’s a beautiful experience to participate in serv-ing Holy Communion. If you are interested in helping to serve the elements of Holy Com-munion during our first Sunday of the month worship services, you can indicate your inter-est by either contacting one of the pastors, or by going to the “Traditional Worship Com-munion Servers” or the “Morning Blend Com-munion Servers” groups in REALM Connect and asking to join the group.

Giving Voice to LGBTQ Older Adults Conference

Saturday, April 14, 2018

9:30am-3:30pm

To register, go to: abundantaging.org

All too often LGBTQ older adults are die prematurely and alone because they are too afraid to ask for help. They fear dis-crimination of paid caregivers and bully-ing by other senior residents. Many times LGBTQ seniors do not have family or friends to care for them, or to advocate for them, at home or in a care facility.

The conference will lead off with the viewing of the film (Gen Silent.) Our viewers will witness stories from gay and transgender individuals sharing their lives as they are followed by film maker Stu Maddux. There will be discussions and workshops with lunch provided. Many health care organizations and LGBTQ support groups will share resources and information.
