SECOND QUARTER 2020 APRIL MAY JUNE

On October 2, 2006 a man carried out a shooting at an Amish schoolhouse in Lancaster County,

Pennsylvania. He killed five girls and wounded five others before turning the gun on himself. The very next day it was reported on television news that the parents of the victims had forgiven the killer. I was confused by this action because I knew the grieving process had yet to even begin. The explanation was that in typical American society we believe we must heal in order to forgive; however, the Amish believe that in order to heal, one must forgive first. I have tried to apply that lesson to my life ever since. AI am confident in our abilities. We have well-established infection control protocols and are prepared to support patients during testing and treatment for coronavirus.

AOur clinicians are skilled in caring for respiratory illnesses and we are providing additional training. Patient/visitor caution signs will be posted at our entrances and we are reinforcing our cleaning practices as well.

AProtecting the health of our caregivers is, and will remain, a priority. The high incidence of coronavirus in China is likely to cause a disruption in supplies, so we will be taking care to conserve gowns, N95 respirators and other important items.

AIf a patient meets the known risk factors, they will be given a mask, isolated in a private room or separate area, and attending staff will wear protective equipment. We will inform and work with the Department of Health for testing and disposition.

AThe same preventive actions we take to reduce the spread of colds and flu apply to coronavirus—hand washing, covering coughs and disposing of tissues, avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands, cleaning/disinfecting frequently touched objects and surfaces, and staying home when you’re sick.

AThis is a continually evolving matter and we will update our procedures as guided by the CDC.

Comments on Novel Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19)

These comments are as of March 3, 2019. By the time many of you read this, there

will be a wealth of additional information available. For the latest information concerning COVID—19 we urge you visit these two websites:1) New Mexico Department of Health https://cv.nmhealth.org/2) Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html Our hospital continually works to be prepared for all types of infectious diseases. We have been educating our team members on the infection control protocols established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for the Novel Coronavirus 2019, just as we do for other types of infectious diseases. We are using the screening guidelines for symptoms and risk factors and have a response plan to protect patients and our staff should it be needed. Determinations about testing of patients who meet the risk criteria are made in cooperation with the local health department. We understand the sensitivity at this time and want to reassure the community that we remain alert and ready to provide such care if necessary.AWe are taking steps to prepare for a potential surge in

the presence of coronavirus (COVID-19). The number of confirmed cases in the U.S. remains low at this time, but will ultimately increase.

AFor people who do contract coronavirus, eight out of ten will be mildly symptomatic, like the flu. Experts project that while many millions of people may be affected, less than five percent of individuals will need hospital care.

A New Life Grows at Senior AmigosAnnette and Valerie would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who donated their time, money, food and hard work to plant our beautiful “Nolan Tree,” build the bench, and put together the lovely memorial ceremony. The tree is a Chinese Pistache which should have very colorful foliage and was planted with the help of Oñate High School NJROTC students, Major Buchannan, Mike Tomlin, Estefano Vargas and Dr. Jeff Anderson, NMSU Agricultural Professor. The new concrete bench was built by Cleto Calderon. Thanks also to Debbie Scott and Ida Molinar who took on the job of tiling it. Thanks to Stephanie Yost James who donated the plaque which is mounted on the bench. Thanks to Cheryl Lither who created the incredible flower arrangements for the ceremony. The tree will provide a living and growing reminder of a wonderful young man who left this world too soon. We know that our patio, garden, and newly planted tree will provide us with shade, time to get together to enjoy the company of friends and comfort when we just need to sit outside and contemplate life.

February 13, Bob Beauford’s American History class met off-site at the Las Cruces Railroad Museum. Guest speaker, Ralph Troeller, lectured on the history and various railroad lines in New Mexico, and what currently comes through Las Cruces by train. At one time there was a cigar store in the station. Ralph explained that the need for consistency between trains forced the development of time standardization across the country. Thanks to Ralph and everyone who attended the special outing.

The next time you visit MountainView Regional Medical Center, take a minute to scan the area for folks interacting with patients in the hospital. Many aren’t wearing scrubs or a stethoscope. Chances are you’ll see dozens each time you visit, perhaps starting with the receptionist that greets you at the door. Many of those folks are actually volunteers, helping to make sure things run efficiently and that patients are comfortable. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2015, over 4.9 million Americans volunteered their time in a hospital or health-related organization. MountainView Regional Medical Center appreciates its volunteers who support our everyday operations. Our volunteer program is robust and we always welcome people interested in volunteering. In addition, volunteers who are 50 years old or better can join Senior Amigos for FREE! Volunteering is the right thing to do for so many reasons: for your community, for your health, and for your leadership development. For more information on volunteering at MountainView call or email Annette Morales at 575-522-0502, [email protected]. In spite of the stress of life and the lack of time—or maybe because of it—get out there and volunteer. Do good, feel happier, build relationships, learn new skills and have an impact on something important to you.

The Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office has launched a new program that ensures qualified seniors in Doña Ana County have a consistent presence during times of need. The program is Amigos de DASO, and partners patrol deputies with seniors in the community who are experiencing short-term disabilities or are medically fragile. “These are the compromised people in our population who might not have someone close by to check on them to make sure their daily needs are being met,” said Sheriff Kim Stewart. “As the caregiver of an elderly relative for several years, I would have welcomed a consistent and reliable ‘amigo’ for her; someone who would stop by or call on a regular schedule to check in.” The new program does not take the place of medical attention or skilled assisted living. According to Stewart, the requirements for participants is that they live in Doña Ana County, be willing and able to accept regular visits or phone calls from a deputy or support personnel, and be at least 60 years old or homebound. The duration of the program is six months, and can be re-evaluated. The sheriff’s office has also partnered with area agencies that can provide additional services to program participants if needed. Applications for Amigos de DASO can be picked up at the main headquarters, 845 N. Motel Blvd. in Las Cruces, or online at www.goDASO.org. For more information, contact Andrea Ferrales-Narvaez, (575) 525-1911 or via email, [email protected]. ######

The Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department collects evidence and seizes goods in the pursuit of criminal investigations. In some cases, recovered property is not claimed by the rightful owners or is forfeited by convicted criminals. In both cases, Doña Ana County uses PropertyRoom.Com to assist with property liquidation. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of each item obtained locally comes back to Doña Ana County and is dedicated to law-enforcement enhancement. To view goods available for auction by the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department and other police agencies, please visit www.propertyroom.com

Employee of the Month: Annette Morales

Congratulations to Annette Morales for being selected as MountainView Regional Medical Center Employee of the Month for January! This is quite an accomplishment considering the organization has over 1500 employees. Annette works as the Senior Marketing Associate in the marketing department. She has taken the lead in initiatives such as Sponsorship Coordination and the Volunteer Program. In addition to all that, Annette is, of course, invaluable to the Senior Amigos program. She shoulders much of the weight of running the center and is acutely aware of all that goes on, noticing even the tiny details. She also continues to teach exercise classes, filling in when instructors are absent and training new ones. Annette maintains a caring and positive attitude in the most challenging of times. She readily seeks, and assumes responsibility for any and all things that might be of benefit to the MountainView employees and volunteers as well as Senior Amigos participants.
