TENSION 2006 DIRECTORY

U

Op roteins are comprised of amino acid chains, the

basic chemical building blocks of life. Protein isneeded by the body to build and repair muscles,

bones, organs, glands, connective tissue, and hair. Thebody continually breaks down dietary protein into indi-vidual amino acids and then reassembles the aminoacids into new and vital structures.

Amino acids are needed to produce protein structuresfor genes, enzymes, hormones, and body fltiids. They alsoact as neurotransmitters and as precursors to neuro-transmitters in the central nervous system, sending andreceiving messages to the hrain.

With the exception of taurine, GABA, and glycine, most amino acids are present in either the D or L form. These forms are reverse images of one another. The Lform of amino acids represents the natural type found inliving plants and animal tissues. The L form is used inhuman protein structures and is more compatihie tohuman biochemistry than the U form. Only phenylala-nine can be present in human protein structures in the Dand L forms.

If the body is deficient in essential amino acids, pro-tein synthesis is negatively affected and serious healthconditions may ensue. There are many environmentalsources that can contrihute to a deficiency of aminoacids. These include pollution, chemicals added toprocessed foods, hormones-drugs injected into meatproducts, agricultural pesticides, smoking, and consum-ing alcohol.

L-Carnitine/Acetyl-L-Carnitine

A major cause of aging is the deterioration of the ener-gy producing components of the cell which results inreduced cellular metabolic activity, the accumulation ofcellular debris, and eventual death of the cell."

The amino acid L carnitine helps to maintain cellularenergy metabolism by assisting in the transport of fatthrough the cell membrane and into the mitochondriawithin the cell, where these fats are oxidized to producethe cellular energy ATP." '̂

Acetyi-l-carnitine is the acetylated ester of the aminoacid L-carnitine. AcetyI-1-carnitine and L-carnitine areabsorbed into the bloodstream efficiently and both arevery effective at carrying fatty acids across the membraneinto the cell where they are hurned as energy and is uti-lized efficiently in the mitochondria of the cell.""

Caution: For some people, L-carnitine, especially acetyl-l-carnitine, may have a stimulating effect. Therefore, itmay be unwise to take it in the evening.

Acetyl-L-Carnitine-Arginate 788100 capsules

Acetyl-l-carnitine arginate is a patent-ed form of carnitine that stimulates thegrowth of neurites in the brain. Studies

show that acetyl-l-carnitine arginate stimulates thegrowth of new neurites by an astotinding 19.5%, which isalmost four times better than acetyl-l-carnitine.'^

The acetylated form of L-carnitine (acetyl-l-carnitinelfacilitates the release and synthesis of acetylcholine bydonating its acetyl group to the production of acetylcholine,an important neurotransmitter."' Acetyl-l-carnitine alsoenhances the release of dopamine from neurons and helpsit hind to dopamine receptors.' '"Numerous human andanimal studies validate the multiple beneficial mechanismsthat acetyl-l-carnitine exerts in the brain.

Acetyl-l-carnitine is more effective than L-carnitine incarrying fatty acids across the membrane into the cell wherethey are burned as energy. Since 1995, Life Extension mem-bers have been supplementing with acetyl-l-carnitine andderiving the many benefits this form of carnitine has shownin published scientific studies. With the discovery of acetyl-1- carnitine arginate, the benefits of acetyl-l-carnitine cannow be greatly augmented.

Super Carnosine_̂ Caps 787

500 mg • 90 capsules

Carnosine is a multifunctional dipep-tide made up of a chemical comhination ofthe amino acids heta-alanine and L-histi-dine. It is found both in food and in the

human body. Long-lived cells such as nerve cells (neurons)and muscle cells (myocytes) contain liigh levels of carnosine.Muscle levels of carnosine correlate with the maximtim lifespans of animals.'"

Carnosine levels decline with age. Muscle levels decline63% from age 10 to age 70, which may account for the nor-mal age related decline in muscle mass and function.'"Since carnosine acts as a pH buffer, it can keep on protect-ing muscle cell membranes from oxidation under the acidicconditions of muscular exertion. Carnosine enables theheart mtiscle to contract more efficiently through enhance-ment of calcium response in heart myocytes."*

Aging causes irreversible damage to the body's proteins. The underlying mechanism behind this damage is glyca-tion. A simple definition of glycation is the cross-linking ofproteins and sugars to form non-functioning structures inthe body. The process of glycation can be superficially seenas unsightly wrinkled skin. Glycation is also an underlyingcause of age-related catastrophes including the neurologic, vascular, and eye problems. Carnosine is a unique dipeptidethat interferes with the glycation process. When comparedto the anti-glycating drug aminoguanidine, carnosine hasbeen shown to inhibit glycation earlier in the process andalso provides additive health benefits.

L-Arginine/L-OrnithineL-arginine is an essential amino acid. L-ornithine may

be used as an alternative since it metabolizes to L-argininein the body. L-arginine is required for the body to synthesizenitric oxide, which enables the arterial system to retain itsyouthful elasticity. Nitric oxide also helps to produceendothelial relaxation factor, which is needed by the arteri-al system to expand and contract with each heartbeat.-' '̂

Surgical or traumatic injury greatly increases the body'sneed for L-arginine. a key building block to repair damagedtissue and bone. Because of its role in repair of tissues,L-arginine belps to promote optimal healing of wounds.L ornithine may also be used for this purpose.̂ ^ -"̂

Dosage and use• Studies suggest that low doses of L-arginine and/or

L-ornithine are unlikely to effect GH release. A minimumdose of L-arginine to promote GH release is probablyeight grams. At high doses, L-ornithinc can stimulate GHrelease. A minimum of V^ grams of L-ornithine is mostlikely needed to promote GH release.

• L-arginine free base powder can be mixed with water orjuice; however, it is alkaline and some people find thatmixing ascorbic acid with it produces a more pH neutraland palatable drink.

• Start with about 25% of your target quantity and increaseit gradually over a period of a few days to minimize tbeoccurrence of minor side effects, such as nausea.

Caution: Diabetics and borderline diabetics should usehormone releasers with care. L-arginlne and L-ornithinemight improve or worsen a diabetic condition.

Persons who have not completed their bone growth(children and teenagers) and pregnant or lactating womenshould not use GH releasers except under a physician'ssupervision.

L-arginine and L-ornithine sometimes reactivate latentherpes virus infections. Therefore, persons who have hadocular or brain herpes should not use them. Those with cer-tain psychoses may experience worsened symptoms if theytake L-arginine or L-ornithine supplements.

If you have high blood pressure or if you have been diag-nosed vdth cancer, consult your healthcare practitionerbefore tcUdng L-arginine products.

L-Cysteine/N-Acetyl-Cysteine/Glutathione

L-cysteine is a conditionally essential amino acid, one ofonly three sulfur containing amino acids, tbe others beingtaurine (which can be produced from L-cysteine) andL-methionine from which L-cysteine can be produced inthe body by a multi-step process. Cysteine plays a role in thesulfation cycle, acting as a sulfur donor in phase II detoxifi-cation and as a methyl donor in the conversion of homocys-teine to methioriine. Cysteine also helps synthesizeglutathione, one of the body's most important naturaldetoxifiers. N-acetyl-cysteine is the acetylated form ofL-cysteine, which is more efficiently absorbed and used.'"''

Glutatbione (gamma-L-glutamyl-L-cysteinyl-glycine) isa peptide (short protein)-like molecule synthesized in thebody from tbe three amino acids L-glutamic acid,L-cysteine, and glycine. Glutathione is one of tbe body'smost important and powerful antioxidants, helping todetoxify xenobiotics. A major function of vitamin C is tokeep glutathione in its reduced form so that they can con-tinue to provide free radical quenchiug effects.''̂ '*

Even though many published studies show that garlic, selenium, alpha-Jipoic acid, L-cysteine, and N-acetyl-cysteine can boost cellular glutathione levels, people withhealth problems may benefit from taking high doses ofglutathione.^-^"

Caution: Wlien taking L-cysteine, N-acetyl-cysteine, or glu-tathione. it is recommended that three times as much vita-min C should be taken at the same time to prevent theseamino acids from being oxidized in the body.

L-LysineLysine is an essential amino acid needed for growth and

to belp maintain nitrogen balance in tbe body. (Essentialamino acids cannot be made in the body and must be sup-plied by tbe diet or supplements.) It may help promoteproper nitrogen balance in the body and prevent glycosyla-tion, the combining of a sugar and protein molecule accel-erated by elevated levels of sugar in tbe blood."*'̂ ^

Lysine appears to help the body absorb and conservecalcium.̂ '' Lysine has many functions in the body because itis Incorporated into many proteins, which are used by thebody for a variety of purposes.

Most people, including vegans (vegetarians who alsoavoid dairy and eggs), consume adequate amounts oflysine. However, vegans whose diets contain large amountsof grains and only minimal amounts of beans could becomedeficient in lysine. Athletes involved in frequent vigorousexercise have increased need for essential amino acids, although most diets meet these increased needs. The essen-tial amino acid requirements of burn patients may exceedthe amount of lysine in the diet.

Lysine supplementation increases the absorption ofcalcium and may reduce its excretion.'''̂ ^

Lysine works with other essential amino acids to maintaingrowth, lean body mass, and the body's store of nitrogen.

L-Phenylalanine/L-TyrosineL-phenylalanine is an essential amino acid which can be

converted to L-tyrosine by a complex biochemical processwhich takes place in the liver. L-tyrosine can be converted byneurons in the hrain to dopamine and norepinephrine(noradrenaline), hormones which are depleted by stress, overwork and certain drugs. By replenishing norepinephrinein the brain, mental energy levels are enhanced and a feelingof contentment often occurs. Because of the liver conversionnecessary for L-phenylalanine to have these effects, L-tyro-sine is often faster acting. In addition, the conversion stepfrom L-tyrosine to norepinephrine may be enhanced if thecofactors {vitamins B6 and C) are included."""

Cells in the adrenal medulla synthesize and secrete nor-epinephrine and epinephrine. Since both norepinephrineand epinephrine can cause smooth muscle {arterial) con-traction, care with blood pressure should be taken whensupplementing L-phenylalanine or L-tyrosine.

L-tyrosine is also a precursor of two thyroid hormones.D, L-phenylalanine is a 50/50 mixture of its two stereoisomers.

Dosage and use• Suggested dose is 500 to 1000 mg in the morning or after-

taken if not included witb the product.

Caution: Cancer patients sbould avoid taking L-phenylala-nine and L tyrosine. Certain cancers, such as melanoma, depend on these amino acids to fuel their growth.Supplemental use of L-phenylalanine and L-tyrosinemay raise or normalize blood pressure. Insomnia may occurfrom over stimulation if taken too close to bedtime.Individuals witb tbe rare metabolic disorderPhenylketonuria should avoid phenylalanine.

Glycine

Glycine is a conditionally essential amino acid thatserves as an inhihitory and excitatory neurotransmitter. It isthe chemically simplest and most ubiquitous of all theamino acids and combines with many toxic substances, con-verting them to harmless forms which are then excreted.

This amino acid has a calming effect on the brain and isalso involved in growth.''"'" Research suggests that glycinemay help promote deeper sleep, faster, without the "morn-ing hangover" effect associated with prescription or over thecounter sleep medication.""'" Glycine also has a positiveimpacl on attention and memory in adults.'^"-' Glycine mayalso have bacteria regulating effects.'̂ ^

Most people need to take between one to three grams ofglycine to be effective.
