Crimp Method

Our compression crimpingmethod of terminating elec-trical wire is an exact sci-ence. The application tech-nique is totally mechanical and thereforecompletely controllable. For this reason it is also uni-form from first to last crimp.Variables common to othermethods such as meltingtemperature, flux composi-tion, entrapped gases, heatdeformation of conductors,oxidation and the like areeliminated. The terminationresulting from this methodoffers excellent tensilestrength and high conduc-tivity.

AMPOWER terminals andsplices are made of highquality seamless tubularcopper for excellent con-ductivity. Our special tinplating process inhibits cor-rosion, and provides trou-

ble-free service. A specialdie stamping process con-verts the copper tube into adouble thickness rectangu-lar tongue with a shortstrong transfer section.These factors combine withthe formulated AMPOWERterminal crimp to produceexcellent conductivity andexcellent strength.

Features

1. VersatilityStranded wires, crimpedwith the DYNA-CRIMP tool,become almost a homoge-neous mass with theAMPOWER terminal orsplice barrel.

Long barrel terminals andsplices are offered for applications where spacelimitations and accessibilitymake it difficult to locate theproper crimp area.

Complementing this versa-tility is the stud hole styleavailable with AMPOWERterminals. They are sup-plied with one, two or with-out stud holes for specialrequirements, or they canbe ordered with extra longtongues at a slightly highercost.

2. StrengthAMPOWER terminals haveformidable strength andresistance to vibration suit-able for their intended use.

This strength comes fromthe double-thick tongue andshort transfer section of thebarrel, and is achieved with-out sacrificing any currentcarrying capacity. In addi-tion, great tensile strength isimparted to the AMPOWERterminals and splices bymeans of AMP’s formulated“C” crimp-tensile strengthapproaches the strength ofthe conductors.

3. EconomyAn important part of all AMPproducts is low installedcost. This is a result of thetool and terminal team, theelimination of clutter foundin other methods, plus thespeed and ease of applica-tion. And AMP’s matchingtooling creates the correctcrimp. As a result, you savemoney every time anAMPOWER product isinstalled.

4. Conductivity, CorrosionResistance and Temperature RiseThe center of the AMP ter-mination method is theexactly controlled “C” crimpthat forms the terminal orsplice barrel into an almosthomogeneous unit. As aresult, conductivity is maxi-mized and tensile strengthapproaches that of the wire.Proper compression crimp-ing brings the terminal intointimate contact with theconductor, producingexcellent resistance to cor-rosion. Tests of temperaturerise above ambient alsoconfirm the excellent perfor-mance of AMPOWER termi-nals and splices.

5. Positive InspectionStandard AMPOWER termi-nals and splices are sup-plied with inspection slots inthe barrel, allowing the tooloperator or inspector todetermine at a glancewhether the conductorshave been fully and prop-erly inserted into the barrel.This can be done eitherbefore or after crimping.Wire stops prevent overinsertion of conductors, andbell mouth constructionmakes it easy to insert con-ductors into the barrel.

6. Broad Wire Size RangeCovering wire sizes from 6 AWG to 1000 MCM [13 to 507 mm2] — for termi-nals and up to 1500 [760 mm2] for splices.AMPOWER terminals andsplices provide reliabilityand low cost installation forpower equipment usinglarge cable sizes.
