It is notlimited to the use of knives or swords but is acomprehensive combat system that utilises anythingthat the hand can carry. Pekiti-Tirsia's movements are based on the traditionalblade art of the Philippines - Kali, which involves slicingswords in a circular motion, symbolic of the orbits ofthe moon and the planets. It also incorporated triangularmovements symbolic of constellations. In ancient times,Kali was taught in rituals that were then usedpragmatically to survive against adversaries andwild animals.

The Visayan datus established a statein Kalibo, Aklan — this is sometimes cited as the originof the name "Kali". Another reason is that a practitionerof the art is trained in carrying a knife, which is called a"kalis". Pekiti-Tirsia Kali specifically was a family systemthat goes back at least four generations, starting withNorberto Tortal. It was further developed and improvedduring the years 1930-36 by his grandson ConradoTortal. The system is now headed by Leo T. Gaje Jr.,the grandson of Conrado Tortal.

Gaje introduced his system to North America afterarriving in the US in 1972. His style earned recognitionand respect from major martial arts organizations suchas the Jewish Karate Federation, the United StatesKarate Association International, and the United StatesKarate Federation.

In 2003, Pekiti Tirsia Global wasestablished. PTGO National Directors include LeoT. Gaje Jr.. and Rommel Tortal in the Philippines,Timothy D. Waid in the United States, PhilipGelinas in Canada, and Uli Weidle in Europe.

Pekiti-Tirsia is the only Kali system recognized bythe Philippine government used to train Force-Recon Marine Battalions of the Armed Forces ofthe Philippines and the Special Action Force(SAF) contingent of the Philippine NationalPolice. Delhi Metro since August 2014 hasbrought in women commandos for enhancing thesafety of passengers who are highly skilled in thelethal art of Pekiti Trisia Kali.
