Robert Dryden

Music Director Joyful Strains & Vocally Wild

Robert Dryden commenced his role as choirmaster of both choirs in 1998, having been in a number of choirs himself, including the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir. Robert has always had a love of choral music, having been brought up in church choirs from the age of 7, making his first vocal solo when he was 8 years old. Robert continues his passion for music, as Head of Music at Haileybury’s Brighton Campus, leading a team of talented and committed musicians, in a variety of disciplines. He also organises the City of Bayside Carols in the Park, as its Music Di-rector and has been President of the Eisteddfod by the Bay, for the past 8 years, organ-ising its choral festival and coordinating the Junior Vocal competition. Having fairly eclectic tastes in usic, Robert has a strong passion for music of the 1960s, especially the girls groups and big harmony groups, such as The Mamas and the Papas and The Beach Boys. He is always excited about sharing his love and joy of music with the two choirs and using their raw talent to interpret the songs. In his free time, Robert loves gardening, reading, wine tasting and dancing.

Clare Budd - Pianist

Clare Budd has been the piano accompanist for Vocally Wild since 2007. Clare enjoys playing with the choir, and has met many lovely people in the choir over the last 5 years. Clare also plays trombone and completed a Bachelor of Music (Jazz Performance) at Monash University in 2008. Clare went on to do her Graduate Diploma in Education and is now the Music Coordinator at Nossal High School in Berwick. Clare loves performing with the choir but she equally enjoys the opportunity to be in the audience and watch the choir performing with the band.

Darryn Wright Music Director SACB Director Southern Stars Stage Band

Neil McKinnon - Master of Ceremonies

Darryn Wright joined Southern Area Concert Band in 1997 playing alto saxophone and took on the role of President in 1998. He held this position until taking over the role of the band’s Music Director in 2006 following Craig Seymour’s retirement. Darryn has been playing music (keyboard) since the age of 5, with his first public per-formance not long thereafter. During his time in Southern Area, Darryn has played alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, flute and percussion. Darryn’s other musical interest lies in Musical Theatre and he has been Music Director for several amateur theatre company productions, including a production of Man of La Mancha with Aspect Theatre on a to be staged in July this year. Since moving to Melbourne from Tasmania in 1996, Darryn has performed with nu-merous instrumental and vocal ensembles around Melbourne and is currently on the executive of the National and Victorian branch of The Australian Band and Orchestral Directors' Association. When not standing in front of an audience performing or conducting, as a keen aviator, Darryn may be seem enjoying the wide open skies!

Neil, a noted storyteller, quizmaster, and MC of weddings, parties, and almost anything else you can imagine, will provide the non-musical events of the afternoon.

MTO is an organisation dedicated to the preservation, restoration, reinstallation, and presentation of Theatre Pipe Organs that accompanied silent movies and provided incidental music in theatres from the early 1900’s until the late 1950’s. The organisation owns three Theatre Pipe Organs, a Wurlitzer now in Cinema 4, Dendy Theatre, Brighton (ex Capitol Theatre, Swanston Street, Melbourne), a Compton in Malvern Town Hall and a Christie/Blackett & Howden in Coburg Town Hall. The large Wurlitzer in Kingston City Hall is maintained by MTO and some of MTO”s technicians assist with the Wurlitzers in the Regent Theatre, Melbourne, Geelong College and in Wesley in Warragul Cultural Centre. MTO has Club Nights on the first Wednesday Night of each month except January moving between Kingston City Hall, Malvern and Coburg Town Halls. Variety events, (sometimes including a silent movie accompanied by the Theatre Pipe Organ) are presented at least six times a year, each in one of the various locations where Theatre Pipe Organs are installed as noted above. These events feature well-known artists as well as Theatre Organists, with two events at least featuring overseas Theatre Organists on concert tour in Australia and New Zealand. Details of these may be found on the website of the Theatre Organ Society of Australia (Victorian Division) Inc. The instruments are maintained, tuned and serviced on a volunteer basis by MTO’s own team of technicians

Scott Harrison - Theatre Organ

A little about me…….. Having now had the opportunity of performing on Theatre organs since 1987, I have appeared at many theatre organ venues across Australia, New Zealand, United States and a couple of visits to England. I was very fortunate to have held the role of “City Organist for the then City of Moorabbin (now Kingston) for a period of 6 years from 1987 through to 1993 residing over their magnificent 4/21 Wurlitzer. During this time I also spent two years residing over TOSA Vic’s prize 3/15 Dendy Wurlitzer. In 1992 I had my first overseas performance on Theatre Organ playing to a capacity audience at the Baycourt Theatre TAURANGA New Zealand. This program was the start of my ongoing association with the Tauranga Theatre Organ Society in New Zealand and the upgrading of Baycourt’s Style H 2/10 Wurlitzer OPUS 1482. It has been a great pleasure to work with these folks in seeing this organ evolve musically. 1993 saw me undertake organ studies with the late Father James Miller at his home in Fenton, Michigan, USA. From this time forward I have enjoyed many return visits to the US playing some wonderful instruments in Northern California along with brief visits to Chicago, Atlanta and Wichita KA. Amongst my regular Australian concerts, were the notable honors of being part of the opening celebration concerts for the Warragul Wurlitzer along with the re-opening of the refurbished Kingston Wurlitzer and organist for the special City of Kingston concerts to celebrate the organ 80th anniversary (2009) and 40th anniversary at Kingston City Hall (2010). Since 1986, I have been a proud member of the Theatre Organ Society of Australia (now Melbourne Theatre Organ) and have enjoyed being part of their preservation and promotion of these amazing instruments. In 2010 I had the pleasure of playing the opening concert for TOSA Vic’s 50th Anniversary convention along with project managing the refurbishment of TOSA Vic’s “Dendy” Wurlitzer which re-opened as part of the 50th celebrations. I guess to sum it all up, music is what makes the world go around, and I consider myself very lucky to be able to share my music with so many wonderful people all around the world.
