2 PBS Hawaii | August 2014
In a 2009 episode of Long Story Short with Leslie Wilcox, singer Marlene Sai reminisced about the days when Hawaiian music could be heard up and down Kalakaua Avenue. “Duke Kahanamoku’s was a supper club. Don the Beachcomber was a supper club. Down the road, you had Sterling Mossman. Across the street was the Moana Surfrider, so you had Pua Almeida playing there. At the Royal Hawaiian, Haunani Kahalewai was playing. It was all over the place, and it was just wonderful.” Today, there is still a home for traditional Hawaiian music and the moolelo of hula and Hawaiian chant. That home is Na Mele on PBS Hawaii. The performances on Na Mele harken back to the Waikiki that Marlene Sai remembers. As you “walk” through the Na Mele archives, you can hear the beautiful voice of Mahi Beamer, with Nina Kealiiwahamana and Robert
Cazimero on backup vocals. Down the street, Jerry Byrd’s steel guitar serenades a packed showroom. Keola Beamer, his mother Nona and his wife Moana are telling a story about Mauna Kea through slack key guitar, narra-tion and hula. Meanwhile, the uplifting notes of “Kokee” are being sung by
Dennis Kamakahi, accompanied by George Kuo, Martin Pahinui, and Dennis’ son, David. And in the middle of it all, Aunty Genoa Keawe, performing with her ohana, is holding that note like no one else can during “Alika.” PBS Hawaii highlights these and other recorded performances with a special presentation, Na Mele Moments. In addition to the cavalcade of performers from past Na Mele, David Kamakahi, son of the late Dennis Kamakahi, and Pomaika‘i Keawe Lyman, granddaughter of the late Aunty Genoa Keawe, will pay tribute to their iconic family members through live performances. PBS Hawaii President and CEO Leslie Wilcox co-hosts with Aaron Sal - a and Keola Donaghy, two Na Hoku Hanohano Award winners and PBS Hawaii Board members. Na Mele Moments is a program in support of PBS Hawaii’s NEW HOME Campaign. PBS Hawaii Board members will be taking your calls of support. To learn more about the campaign or to make a gift, visit PBSHawaii.org/newhome.

Notice something different about your magazine?
It’s coming to you in full color, just as PBS Hawaii does on-air and online! Last month’s issue was our first all-color version. Just as we once broadcast in black-and-white, and then migrated to color, and then to high-definition color,
we’ve brightened up the magazine over the years. We’ve gone from straight black-and-white, to partial color, to color throughout. Editor Liberty Peralta, who also is our Director of Communications, was able to get a good deal on the added color from a print-ing company. And Liberty, with longtime design/photo editor Bryan Bosworth and team, are target-ing more improvements. We know from feed-back that readers are looking for: 1) detail in program listings; 2) behind-the-scenes stories. We’re working on providing more of both. No other television station in Hawaii offers some-thing on this scale, with a month’s lead time in pro-
gramming offerings. We take personal as well as profession-al pride in preparing this guide for you. It’s so easy to care, when our read-ers and viewers obvi-ously care about PBS Hawaii. Just a couple of examples in a week’s time: – From Makiki, substitute teacher Bernice Ramos Clark called one day and said she thought the
weekly Leahey & Leahey show might need a new tablecloth on its trademark kitchen table. She sewed one and brought it in, to the surprise of father and son hosts. We’ll alternate Bernice’s creation with another unsolicited homemade tablecloth, sewn by staffer Meriel Collins.
– Businessman Steve Lane of Manoa signed up his twin goddaughters, four-year-old Madison and Riley Hager for the PBS Hawaii Keiki Club, even though they live in Redwood City, California! Previously, Steve asked if he could sponsor an entire local preschool class in the Keiki Club. It had never been done before. Now Steve has done this for two preschool classes. As a war refugee once told me, “There is no such thing as small help.” Everything matters. Individual acts like these make us commit all the more to being a statewide educational television station with a personal touch. (And more color!)
With gratitude,

Ken Burns’ seven-part documentary weaves the stories of Theodore, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, three members of one of the most prominent and influential families in American politics. The 14-hour series marks the first time their individual stories have been woven into a single narrative.
Sunday, September 14, 7:00 pm“Get Action”A frail, asthmatic young Theodore Roo-sevelt transforms himself into a vigor-ous champion of the strenuous life, loses one great love and finds another, leads men into battle and then rises like a rocket to become the youngest president in American history at 42. Franklin Delano Roosevelt, brought up as the pampered only child of ador-ing parents, follows his older cousin’s career with worshipful fascination and begins to think he might one day fol-low in his footsteps.
Monday, September 15, 8:00 pm“In the Arena”Murder brings Theodore Roosevelt to the presidency, but he transforms the office and makes himself perhaps the best-loved of all the men who ever lived in the White House – battling cor-porate greed and building the Panama Canal, preserving American wilderness, carrying the message of American might around the world. FDR courts and weds Eleanor Roosevelt, the shy orphaned daughter of Theodore’s al-coholic brother, Elliott. Franklin enters a law firm but jumps at the chance to run for the New York state senate.
Tuesday, September 16, 8:00 pm“The Fire of Life”Theodore leads a Progressive crusade that splits his own party, undertakes a deadly expedition into the South American jungle, campaigns for Ameri-can entry into World War I – and pays a terrible personal price. Franklin mas-ters wartime Washington as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, while Eleanor finds personal salvation in war work. Her discovery of Franklin’s romance with another woman transforms their marriage into a largely political partnership. TR’s death at 60 is almost universally mourned, but provides Franklin with a golden opportunity.
Wednesday, September 17, 8:00 pm“The Storm”Franklin Roosevelt runs for vice president in 1920 and seems assured of a still brighter future until polio devastates him the following summer. FDR returns to politics in 1928 and, as governor of New York, acts with such vigor and imagination during the first years of the Great Depression that the Democrats turn to him as their presi-dential nominee in 1932. He survives an attempted assassination as presi-dent-elect and at his inauguration tells his frightened countrymen the only thing they have to fear is “fear itself.”
Thursday, September 18, 8:00 pm“The Rising Road”FDR brings the same optimism and energy to the White House that his cousin Theodore displayed. Aimed at ending the Depression, his sweep-ing New Deal restores the people’s
self-confidence and transforms the relationship between them and their government. Rejecting the traditional role of First Lady, Eleanor becomes her husband’s liberal conscience and a sometimes controversial political force in her own right.
Friday, September 19, 8:00 pm“The Common Cause”FDR shatters the third-term tradition, struggles to prepare a reluctant coun-try to enter World War II and, after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, helps set the course toward Allied victory. Eleanor struggles to keep New Deal reforms alive in wartime and travels the Pacific to comfort wounded ser-vicemen. Diagnosed with congestive heart failure in 1943 and with the war still raging, FDR resolves to conceal his condition and run for a fourth term.
Saturday, September 20, 8:00 pm“A Strong and Active Faith”Frail and failing but determined to see the war through to victory, FDR wins re-election and begins planning for a peaceful postwar world, but a cerebral hemorrhage kills him at 63. After her husband’s death, Eleanor Roosevelt proves herself a shrewd politician and a skilled negotiator in her own right, as well as a champion of civil rights, civil liberties and the United Nations. When she dies in 1962, she is mourned every-where as the First Lady of the World.

Spectacular: Bicentennial of Our National Anthem The valiant defense of Fort McHenry on the night of September 13, 1814, during the Battle of Baltimore inspired Francis Scott Key to write “The Star-Spangled Banner.” His message 200 years ago and the poem he set to music quickly spread and became the rallying cry for the new nation, but it wasn’t until 1931 that Congress declared it our national anthem. Celebrate our anthem’s 200th birthday with an entertainment event commemorating its creation and the courageous battle that inspired it.

Hanalani Schools, a private school located in Mililani, has sponsoredthe local broadcast of PBS Kids programs Word World, Dino-saur Train, and Super Why! for nearly two years. Their support
helps PBS Hawaii provide curriculum-rich children’s programming to keiki throughout the state, free of charge.
“I remember the administrative meeting we had discussing PBS Hawaii,” recalls Gary Phillips, the school’s marketing manager. “As our staff went through the different programs, it literally came down to knowing which programs our own kids or grandkids enjoyed. We watch the shows with our kids, so we know they are educational, wholesome and engaging. One staffer even started whistling one of the theme songs. After that, supporting
PBS Hawaii became an easy decision, and we got the chance to align with our kids’ favorite programs.”
When on campus, Gary receives praise from faculty and parents on theschool’s decision to support PBS Hawaii through broadcast sponsorship.“Not only do they tell me they’ve seen the spot on television, but they arehappy that the school supports the same organizations they themselves do,”says Gary. “By partnering with PBS Hawaii, we’ve been able to take a stepback from being an administrator and look at what we are doing from aparent’s perspective.”
Mahalo a nui loa to Hanalani Schools for their business support. If youor your business would like to sponsor programs on PBS Hawaii, pleasecontact Tatsu Sasaki, Director of Business Support, at (808) 973-1990 or [email protected].

PBS Hawaii is moving forward with our NEW HOME at the corner of Nimitz Highway and Sand Island Access Road in Honolulu.
A local company that’s been leasing the site, American Electric, is vacating the property to make way for site work. Meantime, we’re finalizing an agreement with a respected general contractor.
Construction of The Clarence T.C. Ching Campus of PBS Hawaii is to begin later this year, with completion in early 2016. We thank our Hawaii community for contributing $23 million toward the $30 million goal! We’re still striving to reach our goal. If you’d like to help, please mark your check NEW HOME or go to PBSHawaii.org/newhome for more information.
