The need to master data analytics has never been greater. As

volumes of transaction and the number of data captured

increases, traditional approaches are not good any more.

While there are many tools for data analytics, in this training

program we focus on the tools that are suitable for non-

programmers or developers: (i) MS Excel (ii) PowerBI and

(iii) Tableau

Course synopsis

This training program would gradually take you from intermedi-

ate MS Excel skills to advanced MS Excel and eventually to data

visualisation and analytics using MS Excel, Power BI and Tableau

Lear to work with advanced MS Excel functions including

the latest dynamic array functions

Then learn to automate day to day work including cleaning

messy texts, cross validating data, creating time sheet re-

ports, performing GST reconciliations, preparing reports and

many others

Proceed to perform numerical analysis on the data and de-

rive insights

Create powerful self service dashboards from the data

Move on to PowerBI to do analyse and create powerful

dashboards from data that is far bigger in size and sources

from multiple sources

Understand how to perform very similar tasks with Tableau

We shall learn all the above through variety of case studies

covering many areas including the following:

Bank reconciliations and GST reconciliations

Sales dashboarding

HR analytics and time sheet monitoring

Budgeting and variance analysis

Course curriculum

1. MS Excel Best Practices

In this module you would learn how to organize data in MS

Excel, working with Tables and range names. You will also

learn about file protection, sheet protection and data

validation

2. Text functions and Date functions

You would learn to work with various text functions to clean

data or create dynamic text contents. You will also learn to

work with dates and handle variety of tricky situations

including where months and dates are swapped

3. Advanced Numerical functions and tools

You would learn to apply various numerical functions and

tools including Sumifs, Averagifs, Database functions, pivot

tables and many more.

4. Lookup and reference functions

In this module you would learn to apply the Lookup up

family of functions including Vlookup, Hlookup, Index,

Match, Offset and indirect functions with real life

applications.

5. MS Excel for financial modelling

You would learn various financial functions in MS Excel and

you would also learn to work with “What-if” and optimiza-

tion tools such as Goal Seek, Solver, Scenario Manager, and

This module equips you to automate many of your day to

day work involving MS Excel.

6. Other tools and functionalities

You would learn to work with form controls and learn to

create multi way interactive reports. You would also be

introduced to dynamic array and all the latest Office 365

functions.

6. Time sheet analysis

In this part you would learn to derive insights from raw data

and to create interactive dashboards using legacy MS Excel

approach and MS Excel data model approach. All these

would be learnt through case studies.

8. Finance Analytics

In this module, you would use raw data consisting of ledge

balances with account codes. You would learn to summarise

the financial performance with the data and to compare it

with budget numbers and perform variance analysis.

9. Text analytics

In this, you would learn to analyse a passage and create

world cloud out of it.

10. Open case study

A unique feature of this program is that one of the case

study we do would be as per participant recommendations.

Participants can suggest their own case study or choose

from the other set of case studies. If there are more than

one recommendations, the case study shall be based on

majority consensus.

Part 2: Analytics with MS Excel

In this case study you will use the raw data of large set of

employee access card swipe details to get to create report

of average time spent by employees across departments

and identify employees who typically spend lower than stip-

7. Sales dashboarding

In this case study we use a huge set of invoice records as

raw data and create report connection with customer mas-

ter to create interactive dashboard letting customer filter

the data by products, geography and time. You would also

learn to plot the data in 3D Maps.

11. Introduction to Power BI

In this part, we would be using Power BI to analyze large

data sets and execute analytics case study involving sales

dash boarding and financial summarization.

13. Data transformation using PowerQuery

In this module, you would learn how to prepare data by

transforming data using PowerQuery. You would also learn

to merge and append data. This would be taught through a

case study that involves sourcing data from various branch-

es with each following different format.

14. Advanced analytics in PowerBI

In this module, you would learn to work with DAX queries to

created calculated columns and measures. You would also

learn to work with parameters and slicers. Besides you

would also be introduced to the M language.

15. Creating interactions in PowerBI

In this module you would learn to create interactive

elements in PowerBI such as buttons and tool tips and to

create navigations. You would also learn to publish and view

PowerBI reports.

Part 3: Analytics with Power BI

Participants will be taken through what is PowerBI, the dif-

ferent PowerBI softwares and component of PowerBI: Data,

model, visualization and queries. You would also learn vari-

ous sources from which data can be loaded to Power BI

12. Visual analytics of well structured data

In this module, you would learn how to load data to Power-

BI, understand data models and visualize well structure data

using visualization tools. This would be taught using a sales

dashboarding case study involving over 100,000 rows of da-

ta.

16. Introduction to Tableau

In this part, we would be using Tableau to analyze large data

sets and execute analytics case study involving sales dash

boarding and financial summarization.

18. Advanced analytics with Tableau

In this module you would learn to create calculations, work

with parameters and to create groups and sets in Tableau.

You would also learn to create tool tips.

19. Cleaning data using Tableau Prep Builder

In this module you would learn to prepare data by remov-

ing null values and carrying out other transformations using

steps. You would also learn to publish the data.

This would be taught through same case study that would

be used in Module 13 to teach Power Query

20. Dashboarding and story telling

In this module you would learn to create dashboard from

visuals stored in sheets. You would also learn to create

stories to convey the insight.

Part 4: Analytics with Tableau

Participants will introduced to the Tableau eco system and

will be taken through the Tableau interface. You would also

learn the difference between working of PowerBI and Tab-

leau.

17. Visual analytics of well structured data

In this module, you would learn how to load data to Tab-

leau, create joins and unions and explore data through visu-

als. You would also learn to enhance and format various

types of visuals including maps.
