Meet the School, and Meet the Teachers! Mrs. Lucy Mihulka Principal, St. Anastasia School

O ur Opening School liturgy was an inspiring celebra-tion of what our students think about their school and how happy they were to be back. Banners were

made from Grade levels K to 8 illustrating what they have learned at St. A’s and why they believe that they are in the “best school”. Thank you to the teachers and students. Diocesan Standardized testing begins on Monday, September 22 for grades 3 to 8. Students will be tested on their English Language Arts and Math abilities. These tests correlate to the New York State tests and provide a valuable early planning tool for the teachers by identifying areas of strengths and weaknesses.

The Paul Effman band program demonstrated the instruments grades 3 to 8 can learn as part of our music pull-out program. Band will begin in October. The Carnival was earlier this year. Thank you to all who worked so hard to make this a successful event. The proceeds benefit the school directly. Friday, September 26th is Catholic Schools Night at Shea Sta-dium. The New York Mets will play the Florida Marlins. Thank you to those who purchased tickets since a portion of the proceeds will come back to the school and will be put in a technology fund to continue our technological advances. Over the summer, our school installed wireless technology. Our new computer room was set up with new flat screen computers and SMARTboards were installed on portable stands. Our teachers had training sessions and some have begun SMART lessons which are a joy to behold with regard to student engagement.

Meet the Teacher’s night for grades K to 8 is scheduled for Thursday, September 25th at 7 PM in Father Smith Hall. (Orientation for Nursery and PreK took place at the beginning of September). There will be a short assembly, a SMART-board illustration and the announcement of the new Home School Board prior to meeting the Teachers. After the Teach-ers are introduced, parents may visit their children’s class-rooms. This meeting is vital towards opening the lines of communication between teachers and the parents for the benefit of the students. Please make every effort to attend. Parents of Middle School, grades 6, 7, and 8 will remain in FSH to meet with all their child’s teachers. The 8th grade parents will then receive information on High Schools. We had a special “Student of the Month” in September to welcome all of our new students in grades K to 8. St. Anasta-sia School is honored to welcome the following to our family: Grade K: Caterina Fox; Grade 1: Gina Hernandez, Karis Kim and Bianca Sealey; Grade 3: Ramanee Bramwell, Nico Carlino, Pil Gu Choi, Lois Kim and Nicole Shin; Grade 4: Chretien Brown, Patricia Cerri-Droz, Stephen Hwang, and Tonia Thomas; Grade 5: Nicholas Angeles, Ruben Cerri-Droz, Moon Gu Choi, Paul Hwang and Tamia Nurse; Grade 6: Kang Hyun Aum, Angelica Carpenter, Tanina DiLeo, Kathryn Flannigan and Sung Ho Shin; Grade 8: Benjamin Hong and Daniel Song. The students at St. A.’s have been told that Student of the Month recognition for October will be given to those students who are the most helpful in welcoming the new students to the St. A.’s family. Our Teacher of the Month for September is Mr. Abaya. He teaches Math and Science for the Middle School and is pre-paring to bring Math 9 instruction to St. A.’s. With the Carnival and the wrapping paper sale, the school fundraisers have begun. We appreciate any help you can give us and we thank you for supporting the school. An exciting start to the new school!

■ GOOD NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL , MRS. MIHULKA :

Our school installed wireless tech-nology; our new computer room was set up with new flat screen computers and SMARTboards were installed on portable stands.
