Good News from the School Principal

Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year

    By Lucy Mihulka, Principal

The Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts sponsored

by the parish (Pack and Troop 153) helpedto celebrate a good Christmas, Hanukkah

and Kwanzaa in your name, by collecting food atthe Stop and Shop that was donated to a localfood pantry, with guidance from the Rec-tory. Normally done as a good turn in February aswe celebrate Scout Sunday, we added an extra col-lection to respond to the food emergency this year.

We also continue to provide a holiday sing, withcarols and songs that the boys practice and thensing for the residents of the Little Neck Nursinghome. They are delighted to know that the boysare there in your name.

Our Boy Scouts continue to advance in the lifeskills taught by the program. Most recently, KenBeattie, son of Aaron Beattie, the Scoutmaster, wasawarded the rank of Eagle Scout at a Troop cere-mony. Ken is a student at John Jay College, study-ing forensics, with a desire to serve on the policeforce. Congratulations to him!

Our programs are intended to build character, andto teach the boys about God, Nation, and ourCommunity. Please recommend the program to

your friends, loved ones, and neighbors. For join-

ing information, please call Tom McGlinchey at(718) 224-9634.

We are currently focused on building programs forboys in the first and second grade boys. Please feelfree to come by and visit one of our meetings (thesegrades generally meet on Sunday evenings at6:15). A parent or guardian must accompany thechild.

"Parishioner Bob Reina will be featuring a In Vino Veri-tasWine of the Month" column in the bulletin. Bob hasbeen teaching wine classes at Great Neck Adult Education(including an annual bus tour of the North Fork Long Island

vineyards) and on Wall Street for 15 years. He is also theWine Steward at the Douglaston Club."

"Greetings, fellow parishioners! What I will be attempting in this monthly column is tointroduce you to wines that are high quality, afford-able, match well with food, and are easily obtain-able. (Remember, if your local wine store doesn't havea particular wine in stock, they can order a case of any-thing that is currently available and will usually do soat a discount.) I will not be mentioning vintage yearsin this column, as I'll focus on wines whose qualitydoesn't vary much from year to year. Also, I'd be

happy to answer any wine questions you have and canbe contacted at [email protected].

    Now for our first wine:

    LOUIS JADOT MACON-VILLAGES ($17)

Chardonnay is the most popular white wine grapein the U.S. and most people drink Chardonnay fromCalifornia. Unfortunately, the best Chardonnays fromCalifornia are very expensive and most are too "oaky"tasting and clash with many foods. The greatest Char-donnays in the world come from the Burgundy regionof France and not all of them are very expensive. Thisexample, from one of Burgundy's top producers, has acrisp, acidic, citrusy quality, with a delicate andsmooth light bodied silky finish and is an excellentmatch for any delicate grilled seafood.Try it with a traditional Christmas Eve seafood feast!

Invest in a good map of the city. Mark significant points on a masuch as your hotel, embassies and police stations. Study the maand make a mental note of alternative routes to your hotel or locoffice should your map become lost or stolen.

If you determine that an item is missing, conduct a thoroughsearch prior to reporting the incident to hotel security. Do not ex-pect to receive a copy of the security report, as it is an internaldocument. The incident should be reported to the local police, thRegional Security and Consular Officers at the U.S. Embassy, and your insurance carrier.

Stay only at hotels which have smoke detectors and/or sprinklerinstalled in all rooms and provide information about fire/safetyprocedures. Request a room between the second and seventhfloor. Most fire departments do not have the capability to rescuepeople above the seventh floor level with external rescue equip-

    ment (i.e., ladders).

If possible, select a hotel with has installed modern electronicguest room locks. The majority of these locks automaticallychange the lock combination with every new guest so there islittle chance of someone having a duplicate key to your room. Ifyou lose or misplace your key, ask to have your room re-keyedimmediately

Hotels that have limited access to hotel structure, generally themore limited the access; the less likely a trespasser will enter. The parking garage should not have elevators taking passengerto guest floors. It should only go to the lobby.

Does the hotel provide personnel trained in guest security andavailable for escorts to rooms and auto when requested? Is thehotel located in a high crime rate area, especially when travelingoverseas? Check with the US Embassy's Resident Security Officer in that country and they can alert you of areas to stay awayfrom.

Immediately upon check in, get two business cards ormatchbooks with the hotel name and address on them. Place onby the phone in the room so you know where you are and keepthe other on you when you leave so you know where to comeback to. If you get lost, you have the address and phone numbehandy. There is nothing more frustrating than telling a cab driver

to take you to the "Marriott" and they ask which one? That couldbe one very expensive cab ride. Or, if you are in a country whereyou dont speak the language, you can simply show a taxi driverthe matchbook, and youre on your way back to the hotel.

Whenever possible do not except a hotel on the ground floor thahas doors and windows that open to the outside. Hotels with interior hallways tend to be generally safer. For security in motels, avoid ground floor rooms off the parking lot. If you can't get aroom on a higher level, take one facing the interior courtyard.Guestrooms that are as close to the elevators as possible aresafest, but tend to be noisier. You might also want to find out ifthe room is located next to a vending area, those also tend to be

    noisy.
