Many gathered together so that there was no longer room for them, not even around the door, and he preached the word to them. They came bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. Unable to get near Jesus because of the crowd, they opened up the roof above him. After they had broken through, they let down the mat on which the paralytic was lying. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Child, your sins are forgiven." Now some of the scribes were sitting there asking them- selves, "Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming. Who but God alone can forgive sins?" Jesus immediately knew in his mind what they were thinking to themselves, so he said, "Why are you thinking such things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Rise, pick up your mat and walk?' But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority to forgive sins on earth" —he said to the paralytic, "I say to you, rise, pick up your mat, and go home." He rose, picked up his mat at once, and went away in the sight of everyone. They were all astounded and glorified God, saying, "We have never seen anything like this." SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

When Jesus returned to Capernaum after some days, it became known that he was at home. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Child, your sins are forgiven." Now some of the scribes were sitting there asking them-selves, "Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming. Who but God alone can forgive sins?" Jesus immediately knew in his mind what they were thinking to themselves, so he said, "Why are you thinking such things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Rise, pick up your mat and walk?' But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority to forgive sins on earth" —he said to the paralytic, "I say to you, rise, pick up your mat, and go home." T here are 46, not 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday. So,

how do we get 40? Not through mathematics, but through theol-ogy! Every Sunday is the memorial of the Passion, death and Resurrec-tion of Jesus—every Sunday, in a sense is Easter, even during the Lenten season. When we subtract the six Sundays of Lent (including Palm Sunday) from the total, we end up with exactly 40 days. Tradi-tionally, these 40 days include two periods of fasting: the Lenten fast, which takes us through Wednes-day of Holy Week (which con-cludes at sunset on Holy Thursday right before the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper); and the more ancient Paschal fast during the Triduum itself (Good Friday—

Holy Saturday). Does this mean the Sundays of Lent don’t count—that we should indulge in the things we give up during the rest of Lent on those days? Of course not! The Sundays of Lent are the heart of the Lenten season. Although we don’t have to adhere to our Lenten promises on Sunday, it makes sense to continue our Lenten prac-tices of prayer, fasting, and alms-giving on these days. Lent is an exercise in grace—not mathemat-ics! There are indications that by the end of the third century, a 40-day period of fasting was observed in some places, in commemoration of Christ’s 40 days in the desert. But Lent soon emerged as a penitential season of preparation for Easter. By the fourth century, Lent had

two other meanings: it was the time of final preparation for the catechumens who would be bap-tized at the Vigil; and it was the time of reconciliation for those, whose sins had separated them from God and the Church. Their reconciliation took place on Holy Thursday, so that they could par-ticipate fully in the Easter Vigil. With the time, the public recon-ciliation of penitents died out, as did the Catechumenate. Lent re-mained, no longer a season of bap-tismal renewal, but primarily as season of fasting. Ash Wednesday is one of the starkest, yet one of the most loved days of the liturgical year. In the early Church the penitents would come to the church on Ash Wednesday wearing penitential garments (e.g. sackcloth) and be sprinkled with ashes. Then they would be ritually expelled from the assembly to do their penance for 40 days, returning to the church on Holy Thursday.

Counting to 40 or 46? The Secret Behind Lenten Math

________

The History of Lent and Ash Wednesday

Dear Friends, The Catholic Church continues to celebrate the Year of Saint Paul. Paul was born around 8 AD so this year is the bi-millennial of his birth. We at St. Anasta-sia began in the Fall our first informal study of three of the letters of Paul. As Lent begins we will continue the study of three more:

The Letter to the Colossians The Letter to the Ephesians The Letter to Philemon

It will take place in 5 sessions on Mondays: March 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30th. For your convenience each session will take place twice: 1:15—2:30 PM and 7:30—9:00 PM The sessions will take place in the "Annex" on 244th Street and Northern Blvd. These Letters are in the book we used in the Fall. They will be available for new members. It is my hope that the life and words of St. Paul will continue to enli-ven our hearts and stir up our relationship with God and with one another. If you have any questions please call me at St. Anastasia Rectory (718) 631-4454. Sincerely,

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 25th (ashes will be distributed dur-ing the two Masses and the prayer service) and concludes quietly and with-out ceremony in the late afternoon of Holy Thursday , April 9th before the evening Mass of the Lord's Supper. The six weeks of Lent are dedicated to a deeper conversation to Christ and our spiritual growth. The Parish will offer the following opportunities for you: LENT IS A TIME FOR PRAYER: A cross of Human Need will be set up in the rear of the Church on which parishioners can affix special prayer intentions that they would like the Parish to pray for during Lent. Paper and pencil will be near the cross for you to write intentions. LENT IS A TIME FOR SCRIPTURE READING AND STUDY: Parishioners are invited to study the Letters of Paul. Groups will meet on Mondays either at 1:15 PM or at 7:30 PM beginning March 2nd in the Annex on 244th Street & Northern Blvd. LENT IS A TIME TO FOCUS ON THE SUFFERING CHRIST: Stations of the Cross will be prayed every Friday evening at 8:30. They will be held outdoors in the School Yard. People are asked to assemble in Father Smith Hall. If the weather is too cold or rainy, the group will move to the Church. LENT IS A TIME TO PREPARE FOR BAPTISM & BAPTISMAL RENEWAL: Two catechumens will be at the 12:00 Sunday Mass for special prayers from the Church as they get ready for their Easter Vigil Baptism and remind us of our renewal of Baptismal commitment at Easter Masses. There are no infant Baptisms during Lent and their will be no holy water in the fonts near the doors of the Church to help us focus on the special Easter waters. LENT IS A TIME FOR ALMSGIVING: The Charity or Poor Boxes at the doors of the church will have a particular needy cause printed on the boxes. The monies collected that week will be sent to aid that cause. LENT IS A TIME FOR PENANCE: Individual confessions will take place on Monday of Holy Week , April 6th from 3-5 PM Later that evening there will be a Communal penance Service at 7:30 PM . LENT IS A TIME FOR FASTING: All Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. LENT IS A TIME FOR ABSTINENCE: All Catholics of 14 years of age and older are asked to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fri-days in Lent.
