Architecture represents art, an artwork publicized through form. Architecture is the “art you walk through” that signifies the painting one looks at; claims Dan Rice. Imagery develops from memory of visual experiences and the recollection of senses, such as music, textures, visuals, literature and smells which results in visual mayhem. I do not believe that design derives its imagery from order as Louis Kahn says but from chaos. Design is chaotic imagery put into an expression of order through factors where I mainly focus on site, history, nature, sustainability and lastly humanity.

I feel as an architect you should “dig the hole before you are thirsty”; responding to the site and solving the problem before it is recognized by the user, it is always better to think ahead for the benefit of our future. Design is a result of social revolution and influences the way we live determined by people. Mother Nature responds to architecture and so should architecture - “mother art” - respond to nature.

Description - A research project based on Yeoville as a site analysis. Our

group was chosen to research the subject of “renting”. We analysed how

the renting process works in Yeoville, for e.g.. the adverts posted, what is the state of living, what is advertised etc.

This information was gathered and compiled in a graphic mapping

presentation.

Description - Mistreet acts as a live network (i.e. Facebook)for the social

interaction between the neighbourhood, creating a community space + safe zone.

Each intervention is designed to serve multiple purposes to benefit the

community. The structures are designed using sustainable and green principles, solar panels, turbines etc. as well as a

community farm. These allow people to work together, to share ideas

encouraging them to interact and communicate creating a more

cohesive society.

I designed the brochure to advertise the financial centre and rendered all the drawings included in the brochure.

Brochure : learnt about presentation layout, graphic design and how to show off a

building.

Greensprings: this was an urban design project which taught me the use and manipulation of space and

levels through the needs and activity of people.

Worked on the concept design of a new office block proposal and mixed use residency.

Fourways: this mixed use development taught me about

the relationship between heights of each building relating to the

sun and light making way for good circulation.

Lekki Retail: This mall focused on structure which was the important element in this project especially framing entrances. The ability to expose trusses and beams to be

aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

to accommodate mechanical systems within their design.

The Edge Estate: This complex taught me how

space costs and how you manipulate and use spaces

wisely to create multi-functional areas maximising each unit. Being on site confronted me

with different building methods. I also experimented with fa-

Ditibane House: learnt about spatial relationships parallel

to necessity ways of living especially privacy, natural light and

tween the add-ons and the original house. This teaches you to adapt

and be inventive with detailing.

Caravotas House: By building up the model of this

house on revit, I learnt about how the house is constructed paying

attention to the intricate detailing. Learnt about the restrictions of

building in estates.

I drew up the house in revit working on the estate submission drawings. I worked a little with the engineer involved in the project.

WOOFING(World of Organic Farming)

I worked on 2 farms in the coun-tryside of Somerset, near Bath,

England. We learnt about organic farming, built structures, fences and

lived a sustainable green lifestyle (compost toilets, boilers etc.)

richard rogersI visited a Richard Rogers exhibition in London. I respect him as an architect as he was a master of different trades; architect, urban designer, sustainable designer... for his time. He had a different approach towards structure.... “an improvisation plays a part - permanence + transformation.” “Architecture mirrors society, its civility and its barbarism” . Through models, sketches, sayings and presentation you learn the reason behind his industrial dominant architecture which provokes emotion whether good or bad. I visited a few of his buildings throughout my travels which all told a different story and certainly stood out in the crowd.

Sou Fujimoto designed the intricate Serpentine Pavilion in London 2013. This structure created by thousands of white steel posts joined through geometric cubes resembled a light and delicate form that faded into the distance becoming part of natures element. This pavilion was used as a restaurant in Hyde Park which was playful among people. One could climb, sit, use it as a jungle gym, suitable for all ages. The 3 dimensional floating cubes overwhelmed me with the intense amount of posts used which contrasted with the calming effect it conveyed.

urban spacesNice, France. The new constructed urban development which brought the city to life through a simplicity of vast water features replacing the once upon a time river. The reflective space brought people together in a playful manner with fountains, rotating benches to accommodate the sun, jungle gyms and space for activity.

The singing board-walk, made out of a sea organ by architect Nikola Basic’

Grand Designs was an inspiring experience as Kevin McCloud was the guest speaker. The main focus of London’s Grand Designs was the reintroduction of row housing based on sustainable and green living. Many studies from the beginning of the 20th century have reinvented row housing because of population increases, condensed living spaces due to lack of space. The number of people increasing per year in London and the expense of living have led to their investigation on green systems to be implemented in this style of living. Richard Rogers is one of the architects who has introduced a concept development promoting this lifestyle which contains a low carbon footprint.

5India is an inspiring

country which feasts the eyes and overwhelms the mind with colour, chaos, contradiction, beauty, nature, architecture,

people, poverty and the unusual. My highlight was Le Corbusier’s city design, Chandigarh. This brutalistic spacious city contrasted the other congested states. I am not sure it suited the Indian lifestyle but was

majestic + modern in it’s presence.

India; a place where space is a luxury - overpopulation - poverty. It is a country where nothing is wasted from space to banana leaves to the squashed bottle on the street. Everything is appreciated and recycled or invented to be used in some needed way. There is no such thing as privacy due to this evidence. Washing is exhibited in public streets and one's bed can be the sidewalk of a market. This results in claustrophobic spaces being in architecture, driving, walking, the state of street pollution etc. , Due to this overwhelming realm of activity, a lot of attention is paid to detail allowing innovation in personal lifestyle, work, buildings which makes India another planet on earth. 51

5cube house

hundertwasserhaus

I chose THE CUBE HOUSE + HUNDERTWASSERHAUS to compare as the 2 apartment blocks which admiringly caught my attention. The Cube House, Rotterdam(1977) designed by Piet Blom is based on the high density development on “living as an urban roof”. Its static geometric structure floating in the air contrasts the organic colourful design of Hundertwasserhaus, Vienna(1986) which grows out of the ground through its organic forms. They are both unconventional irregular buildings which allow for an estranged adaptability as a living space which are either pleasing or uncomfortable to its occupants. There fantastical facades catch peoples attention and certainly evoke unusual eccentric emotions.
