In Company F of the Fifth Regiment New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry according to Reg. of NH Soldiers andSailors in the War of the Rebellion.

Andrew's regiment fought, amonst others, the battles of Antiem, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg. Itis perhaps no surprise then that this regiment sustained the greatest loss in battle of any Infantry or CavalryRegiment in the Union Army. What is sad is that the regiment's last battle was fought on April 7, 1865, andhaving survived the bloody battles, he succumbed to disease on April 19, 1865. His regiment was mustered out onJuly 28, 1865.

Notes for Jonathan Leach:From Don Ryan (http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=ryand&id=I5075 8):Jonathan Leach came to Kirby VT. In 1798, and bought a lot of land near the center of that part of the town whichwas then called Burke Tongue, and cut his first tree. He was the first settler in that town and was soon joined byJosiah Joslin,Jude White, Jonathan Lewis, Ebenezer Damen, Ashel Burt, Antipus Harrington and others, most ofthem from MA. And NH. While absent, engaged in removing his family from MA. to their new home, theproprietors obtained a new draught of the town, bringing his number some five miles to the southward of the spotwhere he began clearing, in an unbroken wilderness. Procuring on his request the assistance of a neighbor, as aguide, he started out in quest of his number, which after somedifficulty, he succeeded in finding. In this newlocation he began his labors in the month of April 1800. He erected at once, A log house, though as the readermay well imagine "under difficulties" in as much as he was destitute of shingles and boards not to mentionnumerous other articles indispensable for convenient and successful house building. Into this rude structure, whilethe gable ends were still open, he moved his family consisting of a wife and two small children. Addressinghimself now, to clearing away the forest about him, and preparing the soil for cultivation he succeeded, the firstyear in raising sufficient grain to meet the wants of his family. By the third year he had erected the first frame

Notes for William Story:[Stearns book]"William Story, carpenter, came from Norwich, Norfolk, England, in 1637, as a servant of Samuel Dix, beingthen twenty-three years old. He embarked April 8, 1637, and settled at Ipswich, Massachusetts. A deed on recordshows that he sold a lot of land in Ipswich previous to February 12, 1643, to William Knowlton. He purchasedtwo lots of land adjoining other land of which he was then possessed, January 1, 1655. He was a subscriber toMajor Denison in 1648, and owned a share and a half in Plum Island in 1664. In 1679 he was a voter is townaffairs, and at that time was called William, Sr. He was a surveyor of highways in 1662, and was also calledcarpenter. The records show that he was possessed of land in Chebacco, November 10, 1652, this land adjoiningJohn Webster on the northwest. On May 8, 1649, he purchased a farm of ninety acres from Henry Archer, whichland had been granted by Archer by the town of Ipswich, and lying beyond Chebacco Falls. In 1671 he hadpermission to operate a mill on the Chebacco river, and in February, 1672, Abraham Perkins complained againsthim for taking a lot of green "ole timer" which he drew from the farm of said Perkins on the south side ofChebacco river "either off the commons or my farm.""

Notes for Samuel HARTSWELL:SAMUEL served in the war against the indians under the leadership of Philip of Pokanoket, his name appearingin the list of those to whom, or their descendants, lands were granted in 1735, the share allotted for his servicespassing to his grandson, EPHRIAM-4. It seems likely that he was one of those who made the "hungry march"against the stronghold of Philip, and to whom a land gratuity was specially granted, as the name of JOHN-2,known to have been out in that war, does not appear among the grantees of land in 1735. He undoubtedly settlednear his father at marriage, lived nearer him at his death than JOHN-2, but nothing yet appears to indicate withcertainty whether it was he or his son SAMUEL-3 who settled on the lands in the present bounds of Lincoln, sinceheld by his descendants until 1875.

On about 7 September 1665, but not brought for acknowledgment until 28 March 1680, Samuel Friend ofManchester sold a mill and mill house at Bass River, with two acres of land and twenty acres a little distance offon Royal's Neck side "there being no bill of sale made till now," the original purchaser being Laurance Leach ofSalem "now deceased," and the sale was confirmed to "John Leach, son unto Lawrance Leach aforesaid" [ELR5:109-10]. On 22 January 1670[/1] Elizabeth Leach of Salem, widow, executrix to the estate of Laurence Leach, deceased, sold for "£14 to be paid unto my daughter Rachel Golthwright" a share of fifteen acres of meadow in the greatfresh meadow, five acres excepted, to Richard Leach of Salem [ELR 6:44].BIRTH: About 1583 (estimated by splitting the difference between his age as stated in his nuncupative will andthe year of birth that would result from assuming he was twenty-five when he married).DEATH: By 25 June 1662 (probate of will).MARRIAGE: By 1636 (and by about 1615 if she was the mother of all his children) Elizabeth _____, whosurvived him. ii JOHN, b. say 1617, one of the two sons of Lawrence Leach granted land in 1639. There being several mennamed John Leach, this man's career is presently unclear.

iii RICHARD, b. about 1619 (deposed aged about fifty years, March 1669 [EQC 4:111]; deposed aged "aboutsixty-seven years" 4 February 1684/5 [ELR 9:255]); m. by about 1645 Sarah Fuller, daughter of widow AnneFuller (in her nuncupative will, probably made early in 1662, "Anne Fuller, widow," bequeathed most of herestate to "her son Richard Leach" and a cow to "John Leach & Sara Leach" [EPR 1:389]).

iv RACHEL, b. say 1622; m. (1) by about 1642 John Sibley of Manchester, who d. 1661 leaving "9 fatherlesschildren ... the eldest daughter 19 years old" [EPR 1:348]; m. (2) after 1661 and by 1670 THOMASGOLDTHWAIT [ELR 6:44].

On 27 August 1644 "Richard Leech" was charged with having "received a pig of John Burrage, servant to Jno.Porter and himself, and his uncle Jno. Leech concealed it, not having it cried, until three months later," as a resultof which Richard Leach and John Leach were fined twenty shillings apiece [EQC 1:69]. In his nuncupative will, taken by Elizabeth Buxton and Mary Felton sometime in 1658, John Leach Sr. of Salemgave everything he had to John Leach. "At another time having further conference about the disposing of hisestate unto the said John Leach, we told him there were several John Leaches [and] he should do well to expresswhich of them, he said John Leach the son of Richard Leach" [EPR 1:288].COMMENTS: In the first letter of instruction to John Endicott, dated 17 April 1629, Governor Craddock had thisto say of Leach: "We desire you to take notice of one Lawrence Leach, whom we have found a careful and painfulman, and we doubt not but he will continue his diligence let him have deserving respect" [MBCR 1:394]. A mature adult when he arrived, Lawrence Leach was, true to Craddock's description, painstakingly diligent. His leadership in Salem was quietly competent. Usually on the jury rather than in front of it, he was only oncebrought to task, being one of those who kept his cattle on Salem common and was fined with many others for it atDecember Term 1642 [EQC 1:49]. He appraised the estate of Samuel Smith on 18 November 1642 and retiredfrom public service shortly thereafter [EQC 1:47]. On 15 May 1639 "Lawrence Leach's two sons" were granted seventy acres in Salem [STR 1:88].BIBLIOGRAPHIC NOTE: In 1924 F. Phelps Leach published a genealogy of this family which claimed tenchildren for the immigrant [Lawrence Leach of Salem, Massachusetts and some of his Descendants (EastHighgate, Vermont, 1924)]. This author inserted into the family of Lawrence Leach many persons of the samesurname from all parts of New England (and even from old England) who could not have been his children. TheRobert Leach presented in this volume as son of Lawrence is a chimaera, created by mixing records for RobertLeach of Charlestown and Robert Leach of Manchester, the latter of whom was the son of the immigrant.
