SHIP’S EQUIPMENT CENTRE GRONINGEN B.V.Mr. S. ten Horn started his engineering works and shipyard in Veendam, the Netherlands in 1890.During the late 1890’s early twentieth century, ten Horn delivered inland vessels for the transport of peat through canals and rivers in the Netherlands and Germany. S. ten Horn was also involved in building steam boilers, small winches and cranes.

In 1948 Ten Horn developed the first Diesel electricdriven winch with friction clutch. In 1952 theshipping industry began the containerization ofinternational transport, which brought extensiveefficiency to the merchant shipping industry. In 1962the POOL® High Holding Power N type anchor wasdeveloped in order to meet the market’s requirementsfor a stockless anchor with less weight and more reliability. In 1969 the POOL® High Holding Power TM type was introduced as a more compact anchor with higher holding power per square meter of fluke area. The model was started as an assembly kit which could be bolted together at the yard. This allowed transportation to be carried out in an easier way.

Because the limitation of space and weight on boardhad become a key issue for ship owners, the CompactElectric Hydraulic Turnkey system was developedin 1970. In addition to saving space, the advantages of this system include quick installation thanks to the closed foundation and no need for piping since noseparate power pack needs to be installed. This type of winch also proved to be a success abroad as the first export order for Ten Horn Winches was received with the introduction this winch. This was the start of worldwide sales of Ten Horn Winches.

Another example of special winch building by Ten Horn came in 1972 when Davit winches were delivered to the Holland America Line for its cruise vessel ‘Rotterdam’.

Cono Industry Group N.V. was founded in 1977 as a holding for the group of related companies. In close collaboration with the Royal Dutch Navy and the Technical University of Delft, the POOL® HHP KM was introduced, as a mono-bow anchor in 1978. The need for light weight solutions increased as more and more high speed vessels were developed. This resulted in the development of a Superior High Holding Power anchor which can achieve up to a 50% weight reduction when compared to a conventional anchor.

In 1986 all Ten Horn B.V. activities were taken over by the Cono Industry Group B.V., and Ten Horn Winches were an excellent addition to their product range. Expansion of the equipment range can be seen in the takeover of Marine Equipment Holland B.V., which had a range of anchors, anchor chains and mooring equipment in its product range. In 1990 it was decided to combine the different equipment companies into one group. This decision resulted in the foundation of Ship’s Equipment Centre Groningen B.V.Today Ship’s Equipment Centre Groningen B.V. (SEC)designs, engineers and manufactures deck equipmentof the highest quality. Thanks to close collaborationwith leading yards, ship owners and navies, ourproducts comply with the very latest maritime industryrequirements.

WINCHESDRIVES GENERAL

SEC has been designing, building and maintaining winches since 1890. In the early stages of the design process, SEC can advise both shipyard and ship owner about the optimal installation of the winches. During this stage, an optimum can be found within the limits of classification society rules, rules of different sailing areas and technical requirements. This optimum can be reflected in a mooring arrangement plan. Since limitation of space on boardis a key issue for the ship owner, SEC is constantlylooking for ways to save space. This may result in an alternative position for the electromotor. For instance, it may be placed on top of the gearbox of the electric hydraulic winch. This construction solves many rope problems. Each turnkey compact winch is a stand-alone system, where separate hydraulic and electric components are used. This may seem expensive at first glance, but when compared to the costs involved with installing additional required items on a separate power pack, the electric hydraulic winch is the better option. For example, the amount of oil in the SEC Ten Hornelectric hydraulic winch is a fraction of the amount of oil required for hydraulic winches with a separate power pack. It also eliminates cleaning and maintenance of hydraulic piping inside the vessel, because all hydraulic hoses are mounted inside the enclosed gearbox.

Thanks to the fact that SEC’s main sub-suppliershave a worldwide network, SEC is able to call upon a group of specialists to assist you when needed.

Our service team can be reached 7/24, 365 days a year at: +31 (0)6 5 05 1167 8. In addition to the guarantee period, SEC offers an optional annualservice contract. This contract enables the shipowner to minimize the disruption caused bymalfunctioning winches.

Shipyards may prefer the simple installation of anelectric winch above other types, whereas ship ownersare more interested in the operational advantagesof hydraulic winches. SEC has combined these twopreferences into a single winch design: the electric hydraulic turnkey winch.

Logistically, this configuration is the best solution for the shipyard. Each winch has its own hydraulic and electric unit. This might not seem interesting, but from the logistical point of view, it offers theshipyard a major advantage. If necessary, the completewinch can be built in the block section. This meansthe time needed to install a complete anchoring andmooring system can be reduced to a minimum.

In general, SEC Ten Horn winches are delivered witha closed foundation, ready to be welded to the deck.On request, a part of the chain pipe can even be preinstalled, so no additional disassembly and assembly of the winch has to be done by the shipyardIf a shipyard has to install a hydraulic winch to a separate power pack, it has to supply and install the complete piping from the power pack to winch and back.

SEC is the supplier of a wide variety of winches and winch-related products. For several decades, SEC has specialized in supplying conventional electric and hydraulic winches as well as electric hydraulic turnkey winches. The electric hydraulic turnkey winch has a number of advantages for ship owners, shipyards and engineers. We have testing bed facilities with an overall length of 26 meters, fitted for dynamic pulling loads up to 2000 kN for our winches.

This time-consuming and expensive job can be avoided if you choose the turnkey electric-hydraulic winch. The complete hydraulic installation is incorporated in the gearbox.

This means a shipyard can install the Ten Horn turnkey winch in just a few hours. The installation features of the SEC Ten Horn winches are interesting for shipyards, but of even greater importance is SEC’s backup during the installation process. SEC tests the winches before installation and guarantees the winches work properly when they are installed in accordance with SEC instructions. The SEC Ten Horn winches have a special advantage above conventional winches. Whereas many winches are delivered with an open foundation, the SEC Ten Horn winch is normally supplied with a closed foundation, making engineering of a counter foundation unnecessary. The SEC Ten Horn winch is not a standard winch. It is custom built and constructed of standard components. The winch can be constructed for all situations on board a vessel.

For example:

• Electric hydraulic winches without the complete hydraulic system and piping from power pack or engine room to the winch• Hydraulic winches connected to a central power pack or to a main hydraulic supply system• When electric winches are required by the owner• Weight reduction and/or use of anti-magnetic materials can be arranged• Assistance in positioning the winch and hawser pipe on board• Various combinations in the number of chain wheels, drums or warping heads

The SEC Ten Horn engineering department is a reliablepartner in the design and engineering process of a vessel’s deck machinery. The employees are available to answer the most difficult practical questions concerning space, weight or strength limitations of the anchoring and mooring equipment.

The SEC-Ten Horn hydraulic winches have a restricted size due to an innovative concept with high quality materials. Operation of the winch can be either mechanical, directly about the power pack, or electrical, by means of a potentiometer placed in a seawater resistant box on, or inside, the winch. The supply of oil (flow and pressure) to the hydraulic motor can be

realized by a combined existing power pack on board, whereas certain hydraulic parts will be delivered to guarantee a fail-safe operation. When no power pack is available to operate the winches, a dedicated power pack can be delivered.

Some thirty-five years ago SEC developed the electric-hydraulic winch. This type of winch combines the advantages of the electric and the hydraulic winches into one compact design. The main shaft is driven by a variable hydromotor, which enables staples control of speed and pull of the chainwheel of drum. The incorporated pump is powered by an electromotor mounted in the winch. Therefore, hydraulic piping from the engineroom to the winch is no longer necessary. The winch is standard delivered including the foundation. Consequently, installation is very simple. The winch can easily be welded to the deck. After connection to the electrical main system the winch is ready for use. All types of winches – anchor, anchor mooring, power system. SEC has approval of all major classification societies for this type of winch.

During the project stage SEC can advise the client about the optimum angles of the chain to the chain stopper and hawserpipe. In this way, the client can determine or himself the best position for the winches.Adjustments to the length of the winch or the height of the foundation can be made by the SEC design department. Self tensioning and remote control are options that can easily be applied to this winch. All hydraulic component are incorporated in the totally closed gearbox. This gives the advantage that environmental fluences will have no effect on the operational system. The position of the electromotor can vary from the side to top or bottom of the gearbox. Installation under deck is also possible. On request, a shockproof or explosion proof electromotor can be delivered.

16

The optional feature for electric winches is the frequency drive. The benefits for frequency drive are plentiful. The generator needed for frequency drive can be smaller because of the low starting current. As energy is only needed during operating it is also more environmental friendly. The automooring system comes without a loadcell or pulse encoder. Installation can be done swift because of less cables used. Older winches without frequency drive can easily be upgraded to be frequency drive controlled while using the existing motors, even automooring is possible for every winch. The precise stepless control is made for smooth operation.

The systems has an easy monitoring by color graphic display and monitors cable length, cable tension and line- and winch drum speed(options). The winch is protected against peak torque and overloading and reduces wear on ropes and the winch. Also the frequency drive has the possibility for remote shore support. The conclusion can be that frequency control makes for better performance and lower cost of ownership.

The electric winches of SEC can be delivered with either one, two or three speed electromotors, also as option stepless control and dynamic control can be achieved with a voltage frequency converter.

For anchor winches the three-speed motor is most commonly used. The winches are supplied with a control stand (1P56), which has to be installed near the winches. The motor is directly connected to the gearing.

After welding on deck and electrical connection, the winch is ready for use. The electro-motor is fully equipped for use in a seawater environment.

The standard features which come with this TENV (Totally Enclosed Non-Ventilated) electromotor are:

• Anti-condensation heater• Special coating• lP 56 isolation• A temperature rise class F• Electric disk brake• Marine standard execution

Particular care is taken to adequately handle the double torque which anchor winches will require at full load (2 minutes). A Protective Thermal Circuit (PTC) connection (thermal control over the windings) is also standard for these types of winches. For mooring winches, the DMS-self tensioning feature can be supplied as option.

ANCHORWINCHESThe speed and pulling force of the anchor winches meet the standards according to the rules of the Classification Societies. The chainwheel is equipped with at least five teeth. SEC can also supply a remote anchor dropping system for instant anchor release. This device can incorporate a remote control for the clutch, brake and chain stopper. The fact that SEC is able to test anchor winches at its own factory makes

SEC, and not the shipyard, responsible for the correct functioning of the winch. The shipyard will only be responsible for the correct installation on deck.

The table below shows the dimensions of double anchor winch for various chain diameters. Please contact us if your requirements are different.

21

MOORING WINCHESThe smallest mooring winch produced by SEC has a nominal pull of 10 kN. The maximum size still has to be found. The design principles of a mooring winch are based on the nominal pulling force of the winch. This force depends on the minimum breakload of the applied rope or wire. The rope diameter, length and material of the mooring line determine the diameter and length of the drum. To help increase the lifetime of mooring lines, the SEC Ten Horn mooring winches have a large drum diameter than prescribed by Class societies. The mooring winches are delivered with a split drum when polypropylene is applied. On mooring winches with steel wire the drum will not be split.

Both self tensioning and remote control can be easily added to this winch.

The table shows the dimensions for one of the mooring winches. This winch has one gearbox, drum and warpinghead. On board of OCIMF -tankers there are additional guidelines and recommendations for the use of mooring winches. We like to give you a short overview: The working part of the split drum must be suited for 10 turns at the drum, in addition the complete wire length must fit on the working part. When steel wire is used, the drum diameter has to be at least 16 times the wire diameter.

HIGH QUALITY COMPONENTS • SEAWATER RESISTANT BEARINGS • SPLIT DRUMS POSSIBLE • SELF TENSIONING

Page 17: anchor mooring winches

22

The anchor mooring winch is designed and adapted to the customer’s wishes and, of course, based on the different classification rules. Therefore, standard drums are seldom used by SEC. When polypropylene or equivalent rope material is applied, the drum will be split in a storage and operating part as standard. The combined anchor mooring winch has a positive effect on the weight of the complete anchoring and mooring configuration. The combined winch requires one gearbox and one drive only. On small foreships it may be possible to combine both anchoring and mooring of the portside and starboard winches into a single winch unit. This may be achieved with the restriction that the hawserpipes have a certain

distance from each other. Besides that, the chains have to enter the chainlocker and hawserpipe at a certain angle.

Since the closed foundation is normally included, installation of the SEC anchor mooring winch is a simple task for the shipyard. The anchor mooring winch can be equipped with a self tensioning device only for mooring operations. Remote control is one of the various other options on this winch. The table below shows the principal dimensions of one of the anchor mooring winches. This winch has one chainwheel, gearbox, one mooring drum and one warpinghead.

23

The anchor drum winches can be supplied as electric, hydraulic or electric-hydraulic winch. Variations in the number of drums are possible; the anchor drum winches are supplied with a single or doubled rum. The double drum winches are an ideal solution to equip the vessel according to St. Lawrence Seaway regulations, the vessels from which the keel is laid after 01-01-1975 must be equipped with a stern anchor that has a weight of 50% compared to the bow anchor. The pulling forces of the stern anchor drum winch will be as per the requirements for this anchor weight. The regulations prescribe steel wire length of 110 meters, which we have taken into account as well. Mooring lines shall be of uniform thickness throughout their length, as below mentioned table is stating.

Further requirements for preparing mooring lines for passing through the St. Lawrence Seaway before entering a lock: unless the winches can pay out at a minimum speed of 46 meter per minute, sufficient length of mooring lines to reach out the mooring posts on the lock wall shall be drawn off the winch drums and laid out on the deck and the eye of each mooring line shall be passed outward through the fairleads at the side SEC builds the anchor drum winches in a range with a nominal load up to 3000 kN. The brake holding force of the standard anchor drum winch is calculated at 80% of the wire breaking strength.

Page 19: anchor mooring winches

24

Already in an early stage of the design process, SEC is asked by the shipowner or shipyard to advise regarding the construction and design of the towing winch. The key issues are the pulling forces, brake holding forces and limitations in the deck arrangement. In view of the heavy operations of these winches, special attention is given to the bearings, high-grade materials, accessories etc. to guarantee the reliability during the life of the vessel. The drums are equipped with a remote controlled claw clutch and spring loaded brakes. Both claw clutch and brakes can be

hydraulically or pneumatically powered. Brakes and claw clutches are connected to the quick release system. Remote control allows for simple and effective control of the unit from predefined positions. The towing winches can be delivered with a spooling device option. This device is located in front of the winch, guiding the wire exactly in the layer for which it is destinated. The spooling device is driven by a chain at the side of the drum.

25

Besides winches for a standard anchor/mooring or towing arrangement, SEC is able to deliver a wide variety of auxiliary winches, like for instance tugger winches. SEC tugger winches can be used on board of vessels as a multi purpose cargo handling winch. The basic model is designed for the use of steel wire and a drum that is fixed mounted on the main shaft. The model can be extended with options like warping heads, grooved and/or declutchable drums.

Furthermore the tugger winches can be delivered with a normal gearbox or a planetary gear casing. Adjustments, as per clients request, are also possible and can be discussed with the SEC sales team. Just like all other SEC Ten Horn winches the equipment can be delivered in electric-hydraulic, hydraulic or electric version.

SPECIAL PURPOSESCIENTIFIC WINCHESACCURACY • HIGH EFFICIENCY • SLIPRING DEVICES OPTIONAL

Since a few years Ship’s Equipment Centre is developing and building a complete range of special purpose winches for Navy, Research and Patrol vessels. Special purpose or scientific winches can incorporate, besides the drive system and wire/rope drum, a large range of additional control and measuring equipment. The accuracy and scientific features required for sonar or hydro graphic research demand a different approach of winch building as for normal deck winches. High speeds with low pulls and vice versa combined with electric or measurement cables ask for a spooling device, low friction bearings and gear switches.

Length and load measuring, fully equipped portable and bridge controllers, full and empty drum (pre) warning, slip ring devices for electric cables are just a few other possibilities that can be included in our winches to match the special demands. Our experience and engineering makes it possible to design a large range of these winches, in close co-operation with the shipowner and users.

The SEC Ten Horn electric or hydraulic capstans arecharacterized by their compact shape. The warpinghead is built on top of a round pedestal. Either theelectric or hydraulic system is built in this pedestal,so the components will be under deck. Within acertain range the operating height of the capstancan be adjusted to meet practical requirements. The electric capstan can be delivered with a one,two or three-speed electromotor. The advantage ofthe hydraulic capstan is the possibility for steplesscontrol of the warpinghead. SEC can deliver capstansaccording to DIN 84154. The electric or hydrauliccapstans can also be supplied in the anchor capstanversion.

SEC is also able to supply capstans that have gearsand electric motor s that are fully incorporated in thewarping head of the capstan. This way of buildingresults in very compact shaped capstans that can beinstalled completely on deck.

The RK chain stopper is a so-called fall-over type of chain stopper. The advantage of this chains topper is the semi-automatic securing of the chain in the chain stopper during unforeseen slipping of the chain.

This RK-type can also easily be mounted by bolting down the bottom plate to the deck. According to the classification society rules all RK chain stoppers have a holding force 80% of chain breaking strength.

The RKR chain stopper is the top model in the chain stopper range. This is not just because it is a roller type, but because it is a so-called ‘semi-automatic ratched fall-over type. This fall-over type has the advantage of securing the chain in the chain stopper whenever unforeseen slipping of the chain occurs. A roller chain stopper is a good solution, in particular for larger chain sizes. Pulling the spindle on the stopper enables tight securing of the anchor in the anchor pocket or against the vessel’s hull. All turning parts are made of high quality materials. The roller is fitted with sea water-resistant bronze bearings. Parts of the spindle are made from stainless steel.

According to classification rules, the chain stoppers need a holding force of 80% of the minimum breakload of the chain. On request, SEC can also supply chain stoppers with 100% holding force.

lt is possible to mount the chain stopper at an angle in order to adjust the flow of the chain towards the hawserpipe.

Mooring lines, not stored on a mooring winch, require much space and might cause dangerous situations. The SEC Ten Horn hawser roller is the solution to these problems. The hawser roller can be delivered in two different designs. The simple one allows easy storing in combination with moderate operation and material characteristics. The more advanced type is standard equipped with stainless steel shaft and polyamide

bearings. A crank handle is delivered as standard on this type. The lines - steel or synthetic - can be stored on the reel in several layers. The reel itself can be manually or electrically operated. The hawser roller can be equipped with a foot brake. The hawser roller is normally built in standard steel, coated with a 2-layer primer. Application of a complete conservation system or galvanizing the roll is also possible.

When tides are differing or when quick loading/unloading is demanded (Container/Ro-Ro) Self tensioning demands special requirements for the system since it has to be on stand-by 24 hours a day. In general two self tensioning systems can be supplied:

• The hydraulically controlled self tensioning• The electrically controlled self tensioning

The first one is used at hydraulic and electric-hydraulic systems. The hydraulically operated self tensioning system is adjustable by changing the pressure.

For an electric-hydraulic winch only an oil cooler has to be installed below deck. One of the advantages of this system is the low noise level, due to the fact that the hydraulic components are inside the gearbox.

The second one, the electrically controlled DMS unit, is used for electric winches. With a DMS system the stress in one of the gearsteps in the gearcase is measured with a sensitive bolt, this gives a signal which is converted by an amplifier. The amplifier gives an electric pulse signal to the control system of the winches, which dynamically regulates the tension force of the winch.

Remote control of the winches is specially developed to ease the control and monitoring for the operators. The configuration of a remote control station on portside and starboard are regarded as a standard, but more comprehensive systems are also possible. The controls at hydraulic winches can be arranged with hydraulic valves electric master switches or potentiometers an infinitely variable control. The master switches are delivered as standard in a watertight box, ready for mounting on deck.

There is a wide range of remote controlled items to choose from; a few examples are given:

• Remote controlled clutches• Remote controlled brakes• Quick release systems• Hydraulically operated chains toppers• Anchor dropping systems• Easy to install• Standard solutions• Radio remote

Hydraulic winches, require power packs that can be installed below deck. SEC is able to deliver a wide range of power packs, all specially designed to operate the accompanying winches. Each power pack is produced to the winches specifications. For example, a power pack can be designed to operate all winches simultaneously or individually. The dimensions of the power pack will be determined according to the requested specification of the shipyard and/or shipowner and based on the speed and pull requirements.

On special request, SEC is able to deliver power packs suitable for the operation of winches and other on board systems. Every SEC power pack is compact and easy to install. The complete power pack is built into a framework on which all features can be mounted, such as, for example, oil coolers, electric operating valves, load sensing system, self tensioning blocks, electric motors and hydraulic pumps.

POOL®ANCHORSGENERAL

In order to obtain type approval for High HoldingPower, the anchor has to prove that it has a holding capacity of at least two times the holding capacityof a conventional anchor of the same weight during full-scale sea trials. The predicate HHP allows a weight reduction of 25% compared to a conventional anchor for the same equipment number.

An important comparative feature is the over-balancedanchor head of almost all POOL® anchor types. The centre of gravity of these anchors lies below theaxle. As a result, the flukes are always vertical whileheaving the anchor.

Contrary to most other ship anchors, which are cast or forged, POOL® anchors are made from welded high tensile steel plate material. Normally the anchor is connected to the vessel by means of a chain or a steel wire (and a chain forerunner).

Of course SEC can supply you with the complete chain specification with the anchor. In order to do this, a consultation with SEC is required. That’s why it’s important to pay attention to the way the anchor and the chain are connected to each other on one side, and to the way the chain is connected to the vessel on the other side.

The original SEC POOL® anchors are the result of centuries of ship anchor development, which started with the old well-known stock anchor. Following sailors’ demands for better tractability of the anchor, the still frequently used cast stockless bow anchor was developed.Over the past decades, the so-called High Holding Power (HHP) and Super High Holding Power (SHHP) ship anchors were developed as a result of the need for more reliability and less weight. The leading types of these anchors are the POOL® anchors. SEC has more than 30 years of experience and knowledge of the POOL® anchor, making SEC a reliable partner both now and in the future.

Although all POOL® anchors have a high holding ability, the POOL® TW anchor shows best the combination of holding power and fluke surface. The anchor has large flat flukes made out of high tensile steel plate material. The thickness varies from 15 mm up to 140 mm (depending on the anchor size). The extreme points and the inner edges of the flukes are sharpened in order to enable them to dig in easily. To prevent the anchor from digging in too deep, the POOL® TW anchor is equipped with crown plates.

An interesting result of this design is that a relative low force in transverse direction is necessary to lift the anchor. Like most of the POOL® anchors, the POOL® TW anchor is as well standard as fully balanced available. This enables the anchor to be smoothly stowed the fully balanced execution into an anchor pocket. The end shape of the shank of the POOL® TW anchor can be varied for application of all different types and dimensions of connection parts.

HHP-POOL® TW ANCHORSLOW BREAKOUT FORCE • QUICK DIGGING AT MINIMUM DRAG • LARGE FLUKE AREA• REPAIRABLE

Page 36: anchor mooring winches

45

HHP-POOL® M ANCHORSThe new placed side skirts re-enforces the flukes and takes away the strain on the welds to prolong the durability. The new form of the anchor house makes that the shaft has a double lay up. This will take away the strain on the anchor pin which will have less tear.

The new shape also makes the anchor dig in much faster. By welding the stopper plate between the two side plates, the anchor has a better contact with the ships hull. This reduces movement of the anchor once it’s brought home

Page 37: anchor mooring winches

46

The POOL® N anchor is said to be the most beautiful anchor. Probably for this reason large yachts and cruise vessels are often equipped with this type of POOL® anchor. This does not mean that these anchors are not in use on board of cargo carriers. On the contrary, some of the biggest container shippers in the world equip all their vessels with this type of POOL® anchor. The flukes of the POOL® N anchor are constructed out of two shaped plates, which are welded together. Therefore the flukes of the POOL® N anchor are hollow.

This Construction gives the anchor a large resistance against bending forces. The extreme points of the POOL® N anchor are wider than the width of the crown plates. Consequently the anchor gives a very stable anchoring character.

The POOL® N anchors are fully balanced, which enable them to be smoothly stowed in an anchor pocket. The end shape of the shank of the POOL® N anchor can be varied for application of all different types and dimensions of connecting parts.

HPP-POOL® KM ANCHORS (NAVY)The POOL® KM anchor (navy) is a real speciality. This POOL® anchor has been designed and developed in co-operation with the Royal Dutch Navy and the Technical University of Delft.

The POOL® KM anchor is used as a monobow anchor. Advantages of the use of a monobow anchor are:• The vessel only needs to be equipped with one anchor, chain and winch. This means a significant weight and cost reduction.• Being at anchor, all forces are on centreline, resulting in a very calm behaviour of the vessel.• In heavy seas, the monobow anchor at the centreline of the ship does not form a wavebreaker. This results in less slamming forces on the pocket construction and hawserpipe.

The POOL® KM anchor has been successfully used for several types of naval vessels worldwide, such as frigates and (last) patrol vessels.

Page 39: anchor mooring winches

48

SHHP-POOL® TW ANCHORSThe Super High Holding Power POOL® anchor is a perfect solution for high speed and light craft. The application of a SHHP anchor means a weight reduction of 50% compared to a convential anchor.

To obtain the predicate SHHP, the anchor must have a holding power of at least four times the holding power of a conventional anchor.

SEC has proved during full scale sea trials that the SHHP POOL® anchor meets this requirement. As stowing of the anchor on board of a catamaran differs from convential stowing on a monohull vessel, the SHHP POOL® anchor is available in either a fully balanced or a non-balanced from.

ANCHOR ENDCONNECTIONThe proper use of the chain end connection (according to DIN 81860) increases safety onboard during emergency situations. The chain can be disconnected from the vessel without cutting it or having a man entering the chain locker. One single person is able to disconnect the chain. The end connection is welded to the wall of the chain locker and fastens the last studlink of the last chainlength. This studlink can be manually disconnected by means of a spindle just outside the chain locker.

However, the spindle cannot disconnect the last studlink when the link is under tension. When there is an enormous tensile force on the anchor chain, for instance during a storm, a narrowed plate breaks out of the end connection, through which anchors and chains get lost. This prevents the ship from getting damaged by the forces on the chains and therefore on the ship. The remaining part of the narrowed plate can easily be replaced.

SEC Fairtrans Mooring Equipment is a trade name ofvarious types of mooring equipment produced anddelivered by SEC. Chocks, warping rollers, double bollards and fairleads all belong to this range of products. Depending on your needs, SEC offers a wide range of standard mooring equipment, most of which is in stock and can be delivered immediately, shot blasted and with one coat of shop primer. SEC provides almost all of the requested types of mooring equipment for every type of ship.

All standard types in our collection have been designed to meet the specific requirements of various classification societies. The SEC chocks, warping rollers and double bollards are produced according to DIN standards. SEC also delivers the so-called Panama Chocks, which are required for transit through the Panama Canal. In order for our customers to meet the demands of safe and quick mooring, unmooring and line-tending operations with reduced crews, SEC delivers many sizes of the frequently demanded and most used multi-purpose chocks from stock. This is also the case for warping rollers, which are delivered in a maintenance-free design as standard. For safety reasons, the design of the double bollards

(according to DIN) takes for granted the commonly used figure eight belaying, which results in a load in each tube that can be higher than the maximum breaking load of the rope. Furthermore, SEC can deliver various types of fairleads to help prevent damage to the mooring lines caused by extreme line angles to and from the mooring equipment. The standard SEC roller fairleads will help reduce wear when compared to the use of multi-purpose chocks.

Upon request and in mutual consultation, SEC has can offer you additional services in designing custom-made pieces of mooring equipment by adapting the SEC standard mooring equipment. Based on predetermined mooring arrangement designs and/or the need or desire to have mooring equipment that can be used for different mooring purposes, SEC is always willing to advise you and help you find a solution.

SEC FAIRTRANS FOR SHIP OWNERSThe advantages of SEC Fairtrans mooring equipmentfor ship owners are numerous. For example, thewarping rollers are delivered maintenance-free asstandard. The fairleads can also optionally be delivered in a maintenance-free version.

SEC roller-fairleads are designed for either one or two ropes. They can be welded either into the bulwark or on deck. All the SEC Fairtrans fairleads consist of rollers with a bronze-steel bearing and grease lubrication.

Apart from the standard types, custom-made fairleads can also be designed. Upon request and in consultation, SEC designs fairleads with different measurements, bearings or weights, as well as types complying with OCIMF regulations.

To suit extreme inboard or outboard angles of the mooring lines, the basic simple fairlead (FA) may have to be modified by adding vertical rollers. The options include addition of one additional roller on either the left or right side of the fairlead, or both.

Furthermore, there is the possibility to expand the basic simple fairlead (FA) with an additional horizontal roller (FA-G). This type can also be combined with any of the possible combinations of additional vertical rollers.

The SEC Fairtrans fairleads, designed for two ropes may have to be selected based upon the ship design or the occurring line-angles. Compared to the fairleads designed for one rope, the basic 7-roller fairlead (Type FA-D) can be modified by adding either one, two, or three additional vertical rollers.

The choice of where and how many extra rollers are required depends on the existing line-angles of the mooring lines. lf necessary, horizontal rollers can be added to the double fairleads to overcome differences in height.

Fairtrans double bollards are produced according to the DIN 82607 standard. The double bollard is provided with two ridges to prevent the rope from moving. A stopper lug has been fitted for application of a rope stopper. The tubes penetrate the base plate and reinforcement plates have been fitted in the base of the bollard. Therefore, the foundation construction of the bollards does not have to penetrate the deck.

Upon request, custom-made bollards can be designed, for example, single or double cruciform bollards (DIN 82603/82610).

Furthermore, larger types than those covered by DIN can be supplied. The bollards can also be delivered in combination with the Fairtrans warping roller.

If SEC winches are regularly maintained according tothe instruction book, SEC can guarantee many yearsof productive operation. However, after several years of use, certain parts of the winch may require servicing. According to Murphy’s Law, however, replacement or repair of these parts will always be required in the most difficult circumstances.

SEC has designed a service procedure to assistyou when you need help. The main goal of our service team is to have the vessel on its route with minimal time loss.

The SEC service is driven by two aspects:• Prevention of time loss• Worldwide delivery of parts

Failure of an essential part of the winch may result inlosses due to a delay in a port or even missing the next charter.

For this reason, SEC is on stand-by 24 hours a day.In urgent cases, our service engineer can be reached by mail: [email protected]. Using this e-mail address will guarantee a quick response and, if necessary, immediate action will be taken.

To prevent excessive delays in the delivery of parts, the SEC winch has been constructed of components from reliable suppliers with service points in major ports across the world. This will normally reduce therepair time to just a few hours.

Other parts of the winch - apart from electric andhydraulic components - can either be delivered fromstock from our spares shop or fabricated in ourmachine shop on short notice. However, you’ll be happy to know that these parts seldom break down.
