TWO DAY COURSE IN PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE OF ENGINEERING GEOLOGY
OBJECTIVES This course will provide an overview of the basic principles underpinning the practical application of engineering geology. Attendees will gain increased knowledge of the geoscientific methodologies and practices required for successful interpretation of ground conditions and a greater understanding of “how to get the geology right”.
Skills developed and Outcomes The course will provide a mix of classroom teaching with exercises (Day 1) and opportunity to practice observational skills in the field (Day 2). This combination is intended to enhance how an engineering geologist recognises and documents geological and geotechnical information. Benefits are in the provision and communication of engineering geological contributions to the investigation, design and construction phases of ground engineering projects.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND? The course is intended for engineering geologists with two to six years’ experience, in particular those preparing for the proposed new Chartered Membership status of IPENZ for Engineering Geologists – CMIPENZ(PEngGeol).
Geotechnical Engineers will also find the course useful to enhance their knowledge and understanding of engineering geology methodologies and practical application.

PRESENTERS 1. Fred Baynes: Fred was educated in the UK before immigrating to Australia in 1980 and is now an independent consultant engineering geologist working on major projects in the civil, mining and oil and gas sectors throughout the world.
2. Stuart Read: Stuart, since graduation with a degree in engineering geology, has 45 years’ experience with GNS Science in consultancy and research for investigation, construction and refurbishment of engineering and mining projects.
3. Ann Williams: Ann has almost 30 years’ experience in engineering geological and hydrogeological investigations and analysis. She has focussed on the interaction of soils, structures and groundwater as part of engineering design.
COST The Cost of the course per attendee is:
$800 plus GST for NZGS members $950 plus GST for non-NZGS members
The cost covers attendance for both days, course notes and teaching material, with morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea on Day 1 and transportation to and from a central pick up point to the field exercise location(s).
Attendees should arrange their own transport to Day 1 venue and Day 2 pick-up point and be prepared to purchase lunch for Day 2. Overnight accommodation (if needed) is the responsibility of the attendee at their cost.
Attendees will need to bring their own geological equipment (hammer, compass, mapping stationary etc.) and safety equipment (hard hat, high visibility vest, sturdy boots), warm clothing, sun screen, water etc. for Day 2. Fuller details will be given at a later date.
Fees will not be refunded if a participant is unable to attend, although a nominated substitute person may attend. If the course is cancelled fees will be refunded in full.
NUMBERS The course will be limited to a maximum of 20 students per centre. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis, with priority given to Engineering Geologists, and secondly to Geotechnical Engineers.
