STUDIO PROJECT02 / 32
OBJECTIVE
Through a series of exercises, including site analysis, build-design, representation and program, explore the crafts of bread making and brick-laying and synthesize these ideas into a sound architectural proposal for a communal bread making center for the client Three Rivers Park District at their Silverwood Park location.
PROPOSAL
Harness the beauty of the large clearing in the northwest area of the park by locating the center at the edge of the woods, staying sensitive to the existing trees. Orient the center to have a connection with the undeveloped areas of the park, providing a serene experience for visitors while they practice the craft of break making.

Communal Bread Oven
OBJECTIVE
Through a process of collaboration and exploration as a studio of design students, design and build a brick oven for Silverwood Park, extracting inspiration and knowledge of construction and the process of making to inform the design of a larger design project: the Communal Bread Baking Facility.

STUDIO PROJECT08 / 32
OBJECTIVE
Within a required space of five cubic meters, design a complete living space for a specific type of university student in the Christianshavn area of Copenhagen, Denmark.
PROPOSAL
Beginning with the form of a cube, create comfortable living spaces including full kitchen, bathroom, living room and bedroom by manipulating the space with push and pull actions in both the horizontal and vertical direction. Studio space on the second level features both north and south sunlight providing abundant space for an architecture student.

STUDIO PROJECT10 / 32
OBJECTIVE
Transform a section of the former railroad corridor that cuts through the Norrebro neighborhood into a multi-use park that accomodates iceskating during the winter months and skateboarding during summer. Include programming that facilitates ice-skate rental and repair, an equipment shop and coffee shop.
PROPOSAL
By focusing on the surface that the skateboard and iceskate come in contact with, utilize a dogma of pushing and pulling that surface to create primary spaces for recreation and secondary spaces for supporting programming.

ARCHITECTURE PROJECT12 / 32
OBJECTIVE
Learn design principles, design process, technical drawing and material manipulation. Transform the specific method of tying a common knot into a series of successive studies, each building on the previous within a new medium.
PROPOSAL
With the chosen bowline-on-a-bight knot, extract a physical form from the steps involved in tying the knot into a wireframe model. Interpret the wireframe form and transform it into a paper ribbon model. Further the transformation into a massing model constructed with an “egg-crate” technique.

ARCHITECTURE PROJECT16 / 32
OBJECTIVE
Demonstrate an understanding of the spatial, programmatic, and construction qualities of a particular stairwell through photo, drawing, and modeling explorations.
PROPOSAL
Illustrate and document the unique tension present in this particular stairwell, evident in the continuous change in direction, sharp intersections, and winding volumes.

FBD seeks to improve the safety and dignity of local disabled residents. Our client, Jim Schultus, suffered multiple serious injuries as a result of falling down his exterior steps. By building a new deck with solid steps and handrails, Jim can now safely enter and exit his home with more ease.

STUDIO PROJECT26 / 32
OBJECTIVE
Based on a series of studies of a portion of the Minneapolis Cedar Lake Trail system, integrate an understanding of the site connections to a bike stop for use by local bicyclists.
PROPOSAL
By creating a new link between the Bryn Mawr Meadows park and the bike trail, the bike stop, along with a partner structure, act as anchors to this new link while providing the necessary bike stop program needs. The new link serves to break down the intense segregation of areas surrounding the site, linking residential neighborhoods, the park, and the trail system to the nearby college, art museum and sculpture garden.

STUDIO PROJECT28 / 32
OBJECTIVE
Using knowledge of the site from the previous project: Bike Stop; design a Light Rail Transit (LRT) Station that also houses space for the Walker Art Center Teen Arts Council (WACTAC). The teens enrolled in this museum-offered program need dedicated workshop, storage, gallery, office and performance space that they’ve currently outgrown at the museum.
PROPOSAL
In order for the WACTAC program and the work the teens produce gain maximum exposure and credit, their new facility has been placed directly within the station platform to allow the steady flow of commuters to circulate around and observe the center. By manipulating the site around the station, visitors will feel an immense presence that the platform has been grounded in that site with a direct relation to the Walker Art Center.
