Tonbridge Angels FC is keen to make the watching of football as pleasant as possible for spectators of all ages. The Club will strive to ensure that admission and the right to remain within the Halcyon Wealth Longmead Stadium is conditional upon a code of good conduct observed by all spectators. The following will not be tolerated: Failing to comply with instructions given by a Club Official, Steward or Police Officer; Throwing
missiles of any description; Encroaching on the playing area, or its immediate surrounds; Entering or attempting to enter the Stadium while in possession of a flare, smoke bomb or firework; Making an obscene or insulting gesture; Climbing on any building, wall, fence, or floodlight pylon; Playing ball games; Chanting or singing obscene or indecent songs or using obscene or indecent language; Defacing any advertisement or notice within the Stadium or Clubhouse; Taking alcohol, glasses or bottles outside of the Clubhouse. Tonbridge Angels FC reserves the right to prosecute or eject any person who within the Club premises is deemed to behave in any of the following ways: using obscene language; being under the influence of alcohol or drugs; making vulgar gestures; using terms of racial abuse; taunting opposing team s upporters or entering any area reserved for opposing supporters. The club may, at its discretion, bar anyone guilty of such offences for a period of up to FIVE YEARS. This also covers
any person guilty of such offences at games involving the club away from home, or any game under the overall jurisdiction of the F.A. In addition, the club reserves the right to prosecute or eject any person whose behaviour within the club premises is deemed, at the club’s discretion, to: bring the club or game into disrepute; interfere with the safety or comfort of other spectators; impede in any way the activities of the club, including the progress of any match; be in breach of any one of these Ground Regulations. The Club may, at its discretion, bar anyone guilty of such offences, for ANY period. Any person barred shall be liable to civil action for trespass should they attempt to enter the ground during the period of their ban. He or she has the right of appeal for reconsideration of the term after a period of twelve months has elapsed. Such application must be in writing to the Board of Directors, whose decision will be final and binding. Only one such appeal is permitted. It is forbidden: to bring bottles, glasses or other similar articles into the club premises – such items may be confiscated; to consume intoxicating liquor anywhere other than in such bars licensed for that purpose; to climb the floodlight pylons, stands or other buildings and structures within the ground; to obstruct any gangways, access ways or emergency exits. Good afternoon everyone and welcome to the Halcyon Wealth Longmead Stadium for this Vanarama National South fixture against Weymouth FC.
My greetings are of course particularly extended to Mark Molesley his players, and all connected with our visitors this afternoon. Long before I came here, Weymouth was a regular on our fixture list and there have been some memorable games between the two clubs. League restructuring as much as anything has meant we haven’t met them for several years so it’s great to once again to be renewing friendships with such a famous non-league club.
After some troublesome years both on and off the pitch the Terras are certainly back where they rightfully belong having won the Southern League Premier Division South title. Speaking from experience I can say that it’s a huge achievement to win a league title at any level and I congratulate them on that honour.
They’ve made a pretty good start to the season and remained unbeaten going into the Bank Holiday Weekend including a fine 2-1 win at the Gallagher on the opening day of the campaign. That unbeaten sequence came to an end last Saturday at Chippenham Town with a 1-0 defeat followed by what sounds an exciting game on Bank Holiday Monday at home where they were just edged out 4-3 by early pacesetters Wealdstone.
Despite those last two narrow defeats for Weymouth we know that once again we shall be in for a very difficult game this afternoon and having already set their own high standards they will want and expect to get back to winning ways as soon as possible starting today.
We of course are also coming off the back of two defeats and need to end that unwanted sequence as soon as we possibly can. Despite sitting in the basement position currently, and in August there is only one direction you can go and that is up, I honestly believe we are not far away from again putting some results together.
We were able to draw confidence with a win against Concord Rangers and a draw at Bath City but that confidence was cruelly exposed
by Paul Doswell’s Havant and Waterlooville here last Saturday where they showed just why they are most people’s choice for one of the promoted sides. Despite us taking an early lead they never panicked with the result they were 3-1 to the good by half time.
At this level it really is very difficult to overcome that kind of margin and arguably they just had to sit in and absorb the pressure we exerted in the second half. That said I was proud of the effort my players put in never throwing in the towel and with a bit more luck some of those chances we created would have gone in.
I can’t say I was as pleased performance wise with our efforts at Welling on Monday afternoon. In fact I have labelled this our worst performance of the season so far. Schoolboy errors gifted Welling some of their goals, and to repeat myself, at this level you can’t allow teams to get a couple or more goals in front added to which if you make crucial errors National South strikers will simply gobble them up even if the rest of their teammates aren’t firing on all cylinders.
Yes, we improved in the second period after some changes but you have that proverbial mountain to climb and Welling were experienced enough to ride the storm. I’m not going to just blame the players as maybe the selection wasn’t quite right and I have been considering whether that was a factor. It’s a learning experience for all of us.
Some positives were that both Ade and D’Sean got off the mark. The former was out on his feet by the end having played a full 90 minutes for the first time this season. It is sometimes said with justification that loan players don’t necessarily give their all for the shirt but I thought Ade worked really hard all afternoon and posed some significant questions for the Wings defence.
Finally, may I thank all the supporters who travelled to Welling and kept up the singing from beginning to end. I’m sorry we couldn’t have repaid you with a better performance but I’m going to ask you to please keep it up and we will be doing all we can to turn things around.

Good afternoon from the Boardroom and welcome to everyone for this match against Weymouth including of course all the players, staff, directors and supporters connected with our visitors. We hope you enjoy your visit to the Halcyon Wealth Longmead Stadium and experience a safe journey back to Dorset later today. We also wish the officials for today’s match an enjoyable afternoon.
It’s interesting how the wheel of fortune in football continually turns. Long before the current Board took up their positions the Terras used to be regular visitors but that was quite a few seasons ago.
However, with various promotions, a few relegations and some non-league pyramid restructurings here we are once competing against each other within the footballing family. Let’s hope for a competitive and entertaining game to celebrate what could be a new era of meetings between the two clubs.
Of course we should all be grateful that we are talking about forthcoming football matches. With the devastating news of the expulsion of Bury FC from the EFL their fans have no forthcoming matches to discuss or look forward to.
Not for this column to try and pass judgement on the rights and wrongs of the sorry affair but only to feel extreme sorry to the loyal supporters some of whom will have been following the club for years. As we are a community based club we perhaps can feel the pain more acutely than others. Defeats and even relegation can be dealt with; the closing down of a club is terminal.
Once again it brings into sharp focus that football clubs can very quickly find themselves on the slippery slope of financial insolvency and simply being in the EFL is no insurance that someone will ride to the rescue – just ask Maidstone United about the events of 1992. Your Board constantly has to wrestle with the balance between a club able to compete competitively but at the same time not overreach itself financially. Promotion to National South along with Weymouth was a huge achievement but financial prudence must always be our watchword.
Keeping on the subject of finance - when don’t we! - it might surprise some of you that with our modest budget it is not necessarily the case that we owe money all over the place but rather quite a few people owe us money particularly in the area of advertising and sponsorship. Now of course we’re not going to embarrass anyone by naming and shaming but what I can tell you is that our Commercial Team is hard at work politely reminding those who have pledged money to the club to fulfil their promises and obligations.
You might all think our floodlights are pretty decent and we would probably agree with you, but National League football calls for slightly more powerful illumination. At approximately the time this programme is going to print we shall be visited by contractors who will carry out the work required and then undertake the necessary testing to ensure we meet the specifications. Let the light shine on hopefully a win against Dartford this coming Tuesday!

We welcome another one of the league’s promoted clubs today as Weymouth joined the league in the summer from the Southern League Premier South. Weymouth went up as champions last season and play at step two for the first time since the 2009-10 season. Their spell in the league on that occasion was just one season as they dropped from the National League and were relegated into the Southern League a year on. However Weymouth have an impressive history in non-league football. They were founder members of the Alliance Premier League (now the National League), finishing second behind Altrincham in the first season, and remaining in the league for its first ten seasons, six of them top ten finishes.
Weymouth were founded in 1890, playing their first fixture in September of that year against Mr Pope’s XI, but their first involvement in any form of league football came in 1896 when they were founder members of the Dorset League. They entered the Southern League in 1949, they also twice applied to become members of the Football League in the 1960s and 1970s however there was no promotion or relegation then, new teams were decided by votes and as was the case with many non league teams they were unsuccessful.
They’ve twice played a European Champion in the FA Cup. In 1949 they drew Manchester United in the third round and lost 4-0 at Old Trafford, and more recently they faced Nottingham Forest, then a league one club. But they weren’t the club’s best runs. In the early 60s they reached the fourth round and played Preston. In fact their name appeared in the fifth round draw as the match was abandoned so they were an either-or in the following Monday’s draw.
In 1987, after nearly 100 years they said goodbye to the Recreation Ground and moved into the Wessex Stadium (The Bob Lucas Stadium) where they play today. Their former managers include Garry Hill, John Hollins, Bobby Gould, Neil Webb and Steve Claridge and Weymouth are managed today by Mark Molesley, who has been in charge since April 2017. They sit sixth with three wins, two draws and two defeats in their first seven games. They started the season with a 2-1 win at Maidstone, have beaten Chelmsford and Dartford, drawn at home to Bath and away to Slough and suffered their first two defeats of the season last weekend at Chippenham, and on Bank Holiday Monday when they lost an entertaining game 4-3 at home to leaders Wealdstone. They came from 3-1 down to get back to 3-3 before conceding a late winner from Wealdstone’s Ross Lafayette, his third of three in the match. Their goals have been spread out a bit. Josh McQuoid, Ben Thomson, Brett Williams and Abdulai Baggie have all scored three goals.
McQuoid is a Northern Ireland international striker who is also club captain. His three goals all came in the same match against Chelmsford. He’s also played for Bournemouth, Millwall, Luton and Aldershot. Brett Williams joined in the summer having also represented Forest Green, Torquay and Aldershot while Thomson is in his fifth season at the Wessex Stadium, is described as a no-nonsense and physical striker who is a fan’s favourite at the club. game at Chippenham through hamstring injuries. Baggie has played full international football for Sierra Leone and joined the club in 2017 from Poole Town, his midfield team-mates include Jake McCarthy, who had a spell with Maidstone last season, Andy Robinson, who joined in the summer from Havant, Yemi Odubade, a 35 year old whose previous club was Eastbourne Borough, and Jordan Ngalo, only 20, but has played for England schoolboys.
At the back, Calvin Brooks, a central defender who has also featured for Yeovil and Dorchester, former Bournemouth academy graduate Ollie Harfield, Stephane Zubar, a French centre half who’s played in France, Belgium and Romania and in his second spell at the Terras having moved from Yeovil in 2017, and Sam Sherring, who is on loan from Bournemouth. Behind them all is Weymouth keeper Calum Ward, who is just 18 years old and is also on loan for the season from Bournemouth.
Weymouth used to be regular opponents of ours in the Southern
League but since we became an Isthmian League club we haven’t met. Our last meeting was 21 years ago in the Southern League when Weymouth won 4-2 in April 1998. It was so long ago one of our scorers that day has seen another generation of his family represent the club and retire! Steve Lovell got our first with Matt Broadway adding the second, but Weymouth came out on top through Laws(2), Hutchinson and Robinson.
This is the 48th meeting between the sides, all but one of the previous 47 were in the southern league, the one exception was in the first qualifying round of the FA Trophy in 1995. We’ve won 14 times, lost 22 and drawn 11. Weymouth have won on their last three visits and lost just once here when Steve Campfield and an own goal saw us come out on top 2-0 in March 1994. However mention goes to Tonbridge striker Jimmy Constantine who scored twice on two separate occasions against Weymouth, and once scored four in the same game against them in the 1950s.

The 12th Man Scheme is running for a fourth consecutive season and we would like as many supporters as possible to take part. After all the hard work and commitment shown by everyone last season, we achieved promotion in dramatic fashion through the super play-offs, a day we will never forget! However, that was last season and now is when the really hard work begins. We want to be competitive in the Vanarama National League South and to achieve this, the support of the 12th Man Scheme will be vital.
Last year we raised just over £8,000 (three times the previous year’s amount) and the money helped to pay the wages of players such as Adem Ramadan, Jack Richards, Liam King, Sammy Knott, Michael West and Tom Murphy. This year we want to do even better and raise three times as much again, so we have set an ambitious target of £25,000. We guarantee that every penny raised will go into the playing budget to fund additional players, and details of how your money is spent will be announced in the matchday programme.
We realise that most supporters are not able to contribute large sums but TOGETHER we can make a big difference. The best way to achieve our target is for supporters to donate by monthly standing order which some of us already do. Monthly donations start from £10 which is about the cost of half a pint of beer a week! To encourage this, we have introduced incentives as follows:
• A monthly prize draw will take place for all supporters who make a donation by standing order. Suitable prizes (Champagne, Matchday Hospitality etc) will be announced for the winners.
• Supporters donating a minimum of £30 per month will be allowed access to the Executive Lounge area on match days with complimentary tea/coffee at half-time.
In addition to monthly donations, there are a number of other ways you can support the 12th Man Scheme during the season.

• Events such as Golf Day, Race Night, Quiz night etc

August - and perhaps with it the British summer - draws to a close today with the Angels having completed a marathon month comprising eight league fixtures. On the pitch it is fair to say we have found the step up a tough one, but one that we have keenly embraced. The same is true off the field as well.
As our visitors today will also testify, promotion to the National League has brought with it a mountain range of rules, regulations, guidelines and directives, all of which must be dutifully adhered to and all of which are regularly monitored by the eagle-eyed worker bees at National League Headquarters. This adds a significant strain on a club like ours, the running of which can be almost entirely reliant on a small band of dedicated volunteer supporters.
Most of you will be aware of our videographer Trev Arnold, who has been a regular in the media tower for the last nine years, and we will all have enjoyed the highlights package he has lovingly put together following most first team home games. While mindful that he is providing fans with a service, Trev has always been able to put these packages together in his own time. But all that has had to change for 2019/20. With the start of the season fast approaching, the National League contacted us along with the 67 other member clubs with their ‘Media Instructions’. All home clubs are required to upload full match videos to the league’s ‘scouting and analysis partner’ no later than 12 hours after the conclusion of any match - and yes, this includes Tuesday night games! Teething problems at the start of the season resulted in poor Trev finally getting the file uploaded at around 4am before finally getting some well-earned sleep. I’m sure he’ll be hoping there are no further technical issues this season!
As part of the Media Instructions we were also reminded that the National League retains the broadcast rights to the footage created by clubs and volunteers. This means an embargo on clubs releasing their own footage for over 24 hours after the end of a match. This has been controversial to say the least, and many volunteers and club officials across the National League have similar stories to tell about their experiences.
It’s worth remembering that the National League delicately balances itself across the divide between famous full-time
professional clubs such as Notts County, and part-time community clubs like ourselves, and has a difficult job to do in creating regulation that works across the board. Sponsorship and partnership deals with the likes of Vanarama, BT Sport, Jako and LV Bet are extremely lucrative to the League and its clubs, and those companies rightly expect their brands to be represented expertly and professionally.
Perhaps one of the most important days on the club’s calendar is the Volunteer Day. This year, on one of the summer’s warmest days, over 50 supporters and directors descended on Longmead (see below), co-ordinated by Dave Brown and Amy Weaver. Those present - including first team manager Steve McKimm - were all rewarded with a bacon roll and a hot drink before getting down to work on a variety of jobs that included fence construction, re-felting the dugouts, weeding, cleaning of all seats and advertising hoardings, repairs to the Media Tower stairs and Tea Shack roof, re-painting yellow hatched areas, and painting of the Longmead Lounge in preparation for new pictures to be placed. In truth though, at Tonbridge Angels, every day is Volunteer Day. Pop down to Longmead Stadium on any day of the week and chances are you will find someone giving up their time to keep the ground in order. I recently walked into the stadium seeking out the chairman Dave Netherstreet. Eventually I found him - repairing the changing room roof along with former club physio Chris Dunk!
It would be wrong of me to discuss volunteers without mentioning the match programme you are reading. It would be impossible to produce without the dedication and hard work of volunteers. This week in particular, over a handful of days, Matt Davison, Jim Rowe, Wink Tomkinson, Wes Filtness, Rachel Watson and Dave Couldridge will all have been called upon to provide content and imagery for two 40-page issues, and as programme designer and editor I’m hugely grateful to them all for their efforts.
Sadly I don’t have the space to be able to mention every supporter who gives up their time to help the club. But please enjoy today’s Vanarama League South match and raise a cheer not just for the heroes on the pitch, but those off it as well. Come on you Angels!

Headington were formed in 1893, adding the suffix United in 1911 after merging with Headington Quarry. Headington had no regular home until 1913, when they were able to purchase Wootten’s Field, but this was redeveloped in 1920, forcing the club to move. A permanent home was found in 1925, when they purchased the Manor Ground site. The facility was used as a cricket pitch in the summer and a football pitch in the winter.
In 1899, six years after formation, Headington United joined the Oxfordshire District League, where they competed until the outbreak of the First World War; the Division was renamed the Oxfordshire Junior League after resumption in 1919. In 1921, the club was admitted into the Oxon Senior League. United spent two seasons in the Spartan League in 1947 and 1948, finishing fifth and fourth respectively.
A move into professional football was considered during the 1948–49 season, applying to become a member of a new Second Division in the Southern League. Other teams that applied included Weymouth, Kettering Town and Cambridge United. Although the plans were postponed, the First Division was expanded by two clubs and Weymouth and Headington were elected. Headington played its first season in the Southern League in 1949, the same year they turned professional. In 1950, Headington became the first professional club in Britain to install floodlights and used them on 18 December against Banbury Spencer. They played in orange and blue shirts, but changed to yellow home shirts (the colours of Oxford United today) for the 1957–58 season. In 1960, Headington United was renamed Oxford United, to give the club a higher profile.

Anyone who had any worries at the start of the Angels’ last home match of the season, that their unbeaten home record might be broken at last, could have thrown them away after the first 10 minutes. For it was in the 10th minute when Headington came within an ace of scoring. Jones came out to a ball that was soaring high into the goalmouth, he missed it. Centre forward Peart dashed in for the kill, beat the goalkeeper to it and shot at an empty goal. The ball went sailing past the post. Apart from the occasional breakthrough, Headington had shot their bolt. It was Tonbridge all the way and their three goal victory hardly did justice to the stranglehold they had on the game.
The Angels were playing in new deep-sky-blue shirts. It might have been the thought of that that gave them such dash. It might have been the weather or it might have been the thought of that record that spurred them on to give the Bank Holiday crowd one of the best displays of football seen at the Angel Ground this season.

It was just bad luck, with a bit of bad shooting and fine goalkeeping by Ansell, that stopped Tonbridge from scoring in the first half. Constantine was on form, so were Mullen and Peters.
The first goal came 13 minutes after the restart. It was a tragedy for Headington, Mullen’s shot hit the post with the rebound striking left back Parver, ricocheting into the net.
Almost as if to show they didn’t want to win the game that way the Angels swept into the attack again. Constantine shot and missed. But a minute later, when Mullen pushed the ball across to him, Constantine sent it crashing home. The third goal came five minutes from the end. It was Constantine’s goal all the way into the back of the net.

In 1946-47 he scored 16 goals before breaking a leg. He won a Second Division Championship medal that season but never played for City again. Joined Bury in August 1947 scoring 17 goals. Joined Millwall in May 1948 scoring 75 goals in 141 appearances.

Wealdstone remain top of National League South after a perfect weekend. They beat Hungerford 3-1 on Saturday and then on Monday twice came from behind to win 4-3 at Weymouth. Former Maidstone and Dover striker Ross Lafayette scored a hat-trick to take his tally for the season to six and extend the club’s winning run to five games.
Wealdstone manager Dean Brennan told thenationalleague.org.uk he couldn’t be happier with their start explaining: “It’s been a really good first month, you’ve got to be happy with it. We showed great character at the weekend. Our work rate and togetherness is really good at the moment. On Saturday I wrote the word ‘character’ on the board in the changing room. I knew we would need it, and we certainly have shown it so far.”
Four other teams took maximum points from the Bank Holiday weekend, two of them perhaps unexpectedly. Slough and Hampton each won both games having not won previously all season. Slough beat two of the in-form sides in the division. They won 3-2 at home to Bath City and then went to Dulwich and beat them by the same scoreline.
Hampton and Richmond came off the bottom of the table on Saturday with a 1-0 victory away to Dorking, who haven’t won since we played them, and haven’t won against eleven men this season. Hampton then took that confidence into Monday’s match against Chippenham as Danilo Orsi-Dadomo scored the only goal in a 1-0 win.
Hemel Hempstead Town and Maidstone United also made it a six point weekend. Hemel dispatched Oxford City and Billericay with ex Gillingham player Antonio German grabbing three over the course of the weekend, a result which puts them second, while in their first season since coming down from the national league, Maidstone United made it five unbeaten beating two sides from Essex. After Matt McClure gave them a 1-0 win at Concord they brought Chelmsford City to the Gallagher Stadium on Monday and comfortably beat them 4-1. Dan Wishart, playing in a less familiar left wing role, scored two of the goals.
St Albans got their first win of the season on Monday which took them off the bottom and dropped Tonbridge to last place. The
Clarence Park outfit won 2-1 at home to Concord. Zane Banton made his return to the side after breaking his leg midway through last season. Banton told the Herts Advertiser, “There were times after the injury when I thought I wouldn’t be able to play at this level again. It was a serious injury and I was listening to what the surgeons were telling me and all those ifs and maybes. It doesn’t matter how many 6km runs I’ve done on the treadmill, nothing is as hard as 20 minutes on the pitch when you’re trying to see the game out.”
Dartford showed signs of improvement after a difficult start to the season. The return from injury of former Angel Luke Allen helped them grab their first victory of the season at the sixth attempt on Saturday as they won 2-1 at home to Braintree. Allen got on the scoresheet and there was also a first for the club for the ex Southend youngster Norman Wabo. They then drew 2-2 with Hungerford thanks to goals from Darren McQueen and Luke Wanadio.
Havant and Waterlooville have the league’s only unbeaten record. After winning here last Saturday they were held 0-0 at home by Eastbourne Borough who now haven’t scored in more than six hours of football. Roarie Deacon missed a penalty in the best chance of the game for Havant who sit in third place, five points off the lead.
The Billericay manager Harry Wheeler has told the Basildon Standard they need to change their approach to training following their defeat at the weekend. He said: “We need to go into training with a bit of a different agenda. We need a bit more steel and continuity. If we can do that, you might see a different side and hopefully we can start pushing on.”
In today’s games Wealdstone face tough opponents in Maidstone United as they look to make it six straight wins against a Stones side unbeaten in five. Other fixtures include a game between two sides who could well be in the running come April, Chelmsford City and Bath City.
Seven games into the season bookmakers seem agreed that Billericay Town are the favourites to win the National League Title with one bookie having Havant and Waterlooville as joint favourites.

Directions by Road
Leave the M4 at Junction 17 and take the A350 towards Chippenham. After around two and a half miles you will reach a roundabout (where there is a services area on one side). Take the first exit at the roundabout onto the B4158 towards the town centre. At the next traffic lights turn right onto Hardenhuish :Lane. At the bottom of Hardenhuish Lane you will reach a double mini roundabout, where at the first roundabout you take the first exit onto Bristol Road (signposted Town Centre).After a quarter of a mile you will reach a small car park on your left (look out for the blue Chippenham Town FC welcome sign). Just after the car park there is the entrance road to the Sports and Football Club.
There is no car parking available at the Club itself. There is the small car park which is mentioned above, that is free, otherwise street parking.
Directions By Rail
Chippenham Railway Station is located around three quarters a mile away from Hardenhuish Park and takes about 15 minutes to walk. The station is served by trains from London Paddington, Bristol Temple Meads, Southampton and Chelten-ham Spa. Exit the platform using the tall uncovered steps at the far end of the station. Turn right at the top, cross the lines and as you go down the steps leaving the station, you need to walk straight ahead into Union Road. At the end of this road turn left into New Road, and with the railway bridge on your left, cross New Road at the traffic lights. Once you’ve crossed the road you go straight on (the A 420 signposted Bristol East). Keep straight on this road for around half a mile and shortly after it becomes Bristol Road, you will reach the ground entrance road on your right (look out for a small car park and Chippenham Sports/Football Club welcome signs at the entrance).
