WELCOME‘that was the pearl of great price, the one f ield that had treasure in it.‘

R.S. Thomas’ poem The Bright Field encourages us not to hurry through life to an imagined future but rather to take the time to turn aside to notice the ‘pearl of great price’ that might be right before our eyes. This term’s Arts offerings hope to help us to be able to do that, and it is no accident that the exhibition, which borrows Thomas’ title, encourages us to consider our relationship between the landscapes we inhabit and our own selves. We are delighted to welcome our resident Artist, Rosemary Powell, who hopes to construct a piece of collaborative art involving the whole Tonbridge community, whilst the community exhibition Diversity which opens the year reminds us of how varied life can be in Tonbridge. We are delighted to continue our showings of NT Live which began in the summer of 2015, with the much awaited performance of Benedict Cumberbatch as Hamlet, following acclaimed productions of Coriolanus and The Beaux Stratagem. On the stage before us we welcome back the Propeller Company for a production of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, whilst the music events will follow a series of Shakespeare-inspired concerts exploring different genres. The heady days of McEnroe and Borg may be fading in the memory of some, but the era of bad losers and angst are wittily recreated by Jamie Wood in his successful show Beating McEnroe whilst the theatre season finishes with the eagerly anticipated school production of Hamlet. For younger lovers of drama we have a fantastic programme: those aged 3+ will want to come and see Marvellous Imaginary Menagerie and The Snow Dragon early in term before preparing for the Christmas celebration with Blunderbus’ production of Santa’s Little Helper.

We are also privileged to be welcoming a wide range of speakers from Costa poetry prizewinning poet Jonathan Edwards, to Cambridge Fellow Dr Mark Wormald looking at the work of Ted Hughes. Photographer Gina Glover, multi media artist Jessica Rayner and Social Scientist Geof Rayner will discuss their new book The Metabolic Landscape and Tonbridge’s own Toby Duncan will reflect on the development of his ideas and practice, with particular reference to the works in the exhibition The Bright Field.

Sitting in the middle of the hottest July day on record, it is difficult to foresee how one will feel in December by which stage the current programme outlined in the ensuing pages will be over. However, the Arts committee is confident that the content will help to maintain a sense of summer optimism in the minds of audiences and that there is variety and innovation aplenty to cater for a wide range of tastes.

THE BRIGHT FIELD EXHIBITIONOPEN SATURDAY AND SUNDAY 12-4PM & MON-FRIDAY FOR BOOKED GROUPS

The Bright Field explores contemporary responses to landscape through the practice of a painter, photographer, ceramicist, sculptor, multimedia artist and filmmaker. The exhibition investigates our relationship to our physical environment and landscape as a location for narrative and meaning; ideas explored include ecology, energy use, perception, memory and time. BEATING McENROEBY JAMIE WOOD

Award winning, anarchic, art-clown, Jamie Wood.1981. Wimbledon. Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe face each

other across the net: the self-controlled champion and the impassioned upstart. An epic rivalry comes to a head. A six-year old boy watches and learns.

Beating McEnroe is a new solo show from award-winning theatre maker Jamie Wood about a pivotal moment. With the help of his audience, amongst vivid, surprising images, Jamie performs a cathartic ritual: recreating and reliving the last point of one fateful match until he is finally able to move on in his life.

Beating McEnroe was shortlisted for a Total Theatre Award for Innovation, Experimentation and Playing with Form in 2013, won the From Edinburgh with Love award from Oval house and in 2014 won Best Show at BE Festival as voted by the audience.

NT LIVE SCREENING National Theatre Live’s 2013 broadcast of the Donmar Warehouse’s production of Coriolanus returns to cinemas by popular demand.

Shakespeare’s searing tragedy of political manipulation and revenge, Coriolanus features an Evening Standard Award-winning performance from Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers, War Horse (f ilm), BBC’s The Hollow Crown) in the title role, directed by the Donmar’s Artistic Director Josie Rourke.

When an old adversary threatens Rome, the city calls once more on her hero and defender: Coriolanus. But he has enemies at home too. Famine threatens the city, the citizens’ hunger swells to an appetite for change, and on returning from the field Coriolanus must confront the march of realpolitik and the voice of an angry people.

THE METABOLIC LANDSCAPE: A MEETING PLACE BETWEEN SCIENCE AND ARTOBS GALLERY WILL BE OPEN FROM 6.45PM FOR AN EVENING VIEWING OF THE BRIGHT FIELD EXHIBITION

Photographer Gina Glover, multi media artist Jessica Rayner and Social Scientist Geof Rayner discuss their new book The Metabolic Landscape. The work of Gina Glover and Jessica Rayner can be seen in The Bright Field exhibition in OBS Gallery.

The Metabolic Landscape is a beautifully illustrated, fascinating and engaging exploration of the unfolding relationship between energy and the landscape, and our interpretation of it. Through extraordinary photographs depicting the ways in which humankind has harnessed different forms of energy and a visual exploration of our relationship with energy sources, the authors navigate the disciplines of art, science and philosophy to propose that the earth is in a current state of metabolic distress due to our over consumption of energy.

THE TUNNEL RESIDENCY 2015Rosemarie Powell is a sculptor working from her studio on Ashdown Forest. Her origins lie in stone (marble and alabaster) and bronze, but she currently works mainly in black and white clay which she fires to varying temperatures to achieve authentic expression of material.

Her language is the abstract form. The integrity of the material consciousness of form and process constitute the mainstays of her practice.

Rosemarie will be Artist in Residence in the Tunnel Gallery during the Michaelmas term from the end of September. She sees this residency as an opportunity to explore further the connections Art brings between people and seeks to do so in two ways: in addition to sharing her thought and work processes with the students, Rosemarie will seek to explore further the possibilities of actively involving the Tonbridge School community in creating a sculpture installation, a project she terms ‘social sculpture’. Extending beyond the visible material to include the invisible (social) materials she will be addressing such questions as ‘What is sculpture/3D form? ’, ‘What does the concept of installation entail? ’, and ‘How might a blog enhance a project of this kind?’

NT LIVE SCREENING Almost 170 years on, Charlotte Brontë’s story of the trailblazing Jane is as inspiring as ever. This bold and dynamic production uncovers one woman’s fight for freedom and fulfilment on her own terms.

From her beginnings as a destitute orphan, Jane Eyre’s spirited heroine faces life’s obstacles head-on, surviving poverty, injustice and the discovery of bitter betrayal before taking the ultimate decision to follow her heart.

This acclaimed re-imagining of Brontë’s masterpiece was first staged by Bristol Old Vic last year, when the story was performed over two evenings. Director Sally Cookson now brings her celebrated production to the National, presented as a single, exhilarating performance.
