REJOICE AND GIVE THANKS! Pastoral Letter – July 2014 Rejoice in the Lord, always; again I will say, rejoice! (Phil. 4.4). It may be a surprise to some that, in the Gospels, Jesus has much more to say about the use and misuse of personal wealth (money) than he ever did about many of the ethical and moral issues that are so often talked about in the church today. This is, no doubt, a reflection of the simple fact that matters financial are part of everyday life for everyone. Just like every individual, every family unit, and just like any other community group or organization, or business, a parish church also needs an income, and also needs money, to operate effectively and to fulfill our mission. This is axiomatic. So where does that income from? And why do we need it? Where? The first thing to say is this – neither the Anglican church nor the Diocese of Melbourne give St John’s a cent of income. This is true of every parish in the Diocese of Melbourne. Many people have the mistaken belief that ‘the church’ or ‘the diocese’ somehow fund the parishes of Melbourne by allocating funds to them, but this is a misconception. In fact the opposite is true. Each parish pays to the Diocese a levy, called the parish assessment, which funds the Anglican Centre at the cathedral offices, the Archbishop and Bishops, and central services such as property, finance, and insurance. This year St John’s will contribute around $72,000 to the Diocese from parish funds in assessment. Like every parish church in Melbourne, St John’s is completely reliant upon its members – that is, you and me – to fund its own operation. We do this primarily through the Sunday offertory, and we rely on each of our members setting aside a portion of their weekly income, according to their means, that each are prepared and able to give to resource the mission of our church. This is our most important form of income.

Why? Why should you give to St John’s and give as generously as you can? Not to ‘prop us up’ and to enable us to pay our bills and meet our obligations, but to resource our mission. As part of the forthcoming stewardship campaign a draft Mission Action Plan (MAP) for the next five year period (2015-2020) will be unveiled. This document, which has been workshopped by the Parish Council, expresses four key areas of mission, details some aspirations and goals, and poses a series of questions for engagement and consultation in the coming weeks. The intention will be to finalise the MAP at this year’s Annual Meeting. It is my hope that parishioners of St John’s will give towards this mission in order to make it happen! In addition to assisting us resource our mission financially, there are many other reasons for giving to St John’s.

Because you are part of the Christian family and the spiritual community here.

Because you want to see St John’s continue to grow and flourish, for many years into the future.

You believe in giving back, because you have received much over the years.

You appreciate what happens here, week by week, and day by day.

You value the richness of our worship, and the excellence of our music and choir, and their talents and gifts.

You want us to continue our ministries to families and children, and to explore new ways of reaching out to this group of people.

You value the sense of community, belonging, and mutual support and prayer you have here.

You want to make a difference! To enable us to do all of these things, let alone maintain our beautiful church and grounds, and fund our day to day operation, we rely on the generosity of our parishioners.

How? Finally, then, how do we give to St John’s? In the past, envelopes were the usual method of giving. Each week, for many years, parishioners faithfully filled that Sunday’s envelope with the amount of money they had set aside – in notes and coins. Today, almost everyone gives by utilizing the ADF direct debit facility, and we hope that we reach a point where everyone in the parish is giving by this method. It is entirely safe, and there are no fees attached, as the administering financial institution is the Anglican Development Fund. More details will be in the campaign material to be distributed on Sunday 17th August. I am sure that there are many of you reading this who already give, and give generously, and perhaps already give as much as you can. There may be some, especially those new to the church, who have perhaps not ever considered their giving to their parish. The stewardship campaign com-mencing in August will address the theme of Christian stewardship. It does call for a response, as it must – response of thanksgiving, in joyful gratitude for all that God has done for us, and for the privilege and the joy we have in belonging to the community of St John’s Toorak. The Venerable Dr Bradly Billings The Vicar
