About Rev. George

My name is George Kirreh, I am married to my wife Faten and we have three wonderful adult children: two daughters and a son. I was born in the Holy Land, Jerusalem. I moved to Australia in 1995 with my wife and have since resided in Adelaide, South Australia. Throughout this time, I have had a number of ministry roles across different parishes in Adelaide and Murray Bridge. I was ordained in the Diocese of Adelaide as a deacon in 2007 and in 2009 priested in the Diocese of Jerusalem. After working in the Holy Land & Jordan for two years, we returned to Australia where I became a Rector in Murray Bridge and currently, I am a parish priest at St Luke's Whitmore Square, Adelaide.

From the Vicar

It has been an action packed week in Olympic viewing. I haven’t watched a lot of it but I have certainly caught glimpses and enjoyed some of the highlights. There have been some great ‘gladiator like’ moments: some great upsets and some remarkable feats.

I was amazed to hear of the high jumpers choosing to share the gold medal and equally fascinated to hear that some people just couldn’t accept that this was an acceptable choice. Andrew Gaze was one who was discombobulated by the officials allowing it and many have questioned if it is in the true spirit of the Olympics. Personally, I think it is wonderful and it shows a high calibre of athlete who can recognise that in this contest they are matched as equals, that they don’t need to fight to the death but can in fact share the glory. I take my hat off to them.

Another surprising moment for me was to read about Tom Daley, the diver, who sat beside the pool when the women were diving and pulled out his knitting needles.

Until I read about this action, I confess, I had never heard of Tom nor what he does with the products he knits.

He has an Instagram page called "Made with love by Tom Daley", where he presents his creations and then auctions them off, devolving all proceeds to family homes for LGBTQIA+ kids who are evicted from their parents’ homes when they have come out to their families.

His actions support places of refuge for these young people whilst also raising awareness of their vulnerability.

What will you take away from this year’s Olympic viewing? Is there an image that will stay with you?

A range of new sports were added to the Olympics this year. I wonder what we might add to our repertoire here at St Silas? Is there some training we need to do so that we can run the race set before us? Are there things we might share with others in the same way that the high jumpers shared gold? What could we be doing to raise awareness for the vulnerable in our community in the same way that Tom Daley knits for the young evicted folk?

About Gareth and Life Again

Gareth Andrews is a former Geelong and Richmond footballer who appears to have led a fortunate life. He had a successful VFL/AFL playing career, worked in sports media and held leadership positions associated with the AFL. He is a joint founder of the AFL Players Association, and is a Trustee of both the Cats and the AFLPA.

Beyond football, he has had a happy and fulfilling marriage and family life, run a series of successful businesses, and travelled extensively around the world.

But like most men, there have been many challenges which have tested him. His marriage ended, he has suffered financially, been depressed and experienced extreme anxiety. He is living proof of Thoreau’s famous quote that: “most men lead lives of quiet desperation” and in this he recognised he wasn’t alone. He searched for more.

His search took him to interesting places: counselling, mediation, medication, massive amounts of reading, desert retreats, ashrams, mountain tops, homeless kitchens and new affairs of the heart.

In 2012, Gareth established Life Again, a registered not-for-profit charity that educates and helps men to change and lead more fulfilling and purposeful lives. Through writing, public speaking, taking men to the Outback and working with First Nation people, workshops and personally challenging men, he asks the powerful question, “Have you Done Your Best Work Yet?” The answers will surprise.

He is a story teller at heart and he is telling us his story.
