Science Week and ES Week at Mano! This week we celebrate National Science Week and Ms Adair has been doing some terrific work with the Middles and Seniors along the theme of ‘Future Earth’. Our Science specialist subject this year has been a most positive addition to our curriculum, student engaging with new learnings and opportunities.
We have also acknowledged the fabulous work of our Education Support (ES) Staff this week. Our ES team is made up of eight Classroom Aides, Chaplain, Business Manager, Office Admin and Gardener/Handyman roles, who collectively contribute such an enormous amount to our organisation and community. The ES staff who were able to join us at assembly on Monday morning were presented with a small gift to show our appreciation for what they do to make Mano a great place.
Literacy and Numeracy Week Next week is another big week – it is Literacy and Numeracy week. I hope you can join us to celebrate the importance of these vital areas of the curriculum, engaging with the various activities on offer throughout the week. Please visit the Book Fair one afternoon in the library – the range of books and stationery will amaze you. Please order a special Book Week burger from the canteen for Thursday (orders and money due in Tuesday) – spare order forms are available from the Office.
We hope lots of parents can visit classrooms on Wednesday afternoon (2:30-3:30pm) to see Numeracy sessions in action.
The Literacy and Numeracy Writing completion has kicked off – theme of ‘Escape to Everywhere’ with entries due in Friday 18th August.
And give the Family Maths problem solving competition a go!
NAPLAN 2017 Last term our Grade 3 and 5 students participated in the National Literacy and Numeracy Testing Program – 4 tests over 3 days.
Test papers have now been marked and the results have just arrived back into schools. Each student will receive their own 2017 NAPLAN report document. The school can now access collated data which reflects cohort achievement in Reading, Writing, Spelling, Numeracy and Grammar / Punctuation. Whole of school
data can be compared to that of previous years and also how the Grade 3’s of 2015 performed and tracked into 2017 in Grade 5. Such analysis has been the basis of our School Review self-evaluation work, reflecting over the past four years of school operation in many areas.
Refurbishment Works in Junior/Admin Building Set to Commence We presently have a number of contractors tendering for this major refurbishment, which will result in an appointed tendered announce prior to the end of this term. Works should commence very soon after confirmation of the successful tenderer. As mentioned previously, works will be staged to minimise impact on daily programs. The first stage is likely to see Junior H and Junior B relocated to the Multi building for what may be much of Term 4. We can also expect some temporary workers facilities set up in the school yard, perhaps a site building and portable toilet in the front terrace.
Parent Opinion Survey If you have been contacted (by email) seeking your support to complete such a survey we really appreciate your support with this. Parent survey responses are confidential and will help us to reflect and evaluate current school operations and procedures.
Parent ICT Information Evening - Monday 14th August Thank you to Mr Valentine and Mr Gibson for planning and delivering this session last Monday evening. The enhanced online access for students via our Senior iPad Program is having a positive impact on student engagement and certainly supports addressing the mandated Victorian Curriculum aspects of Digital Technologies in particular.
Parents are welcome to contact any of our four Senior Team teachers for further details of what is happening with ICT at Mano.
Check out the details on the school’s website re our BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) Program in the Seniors.

Young Leaders Breakfast 2017
Last Friday, August 11th, our six school captains attended the 2017 Young Leaders Breakfast at North
Geelong Secondary College. We enjoyed an incredible breakfast of pastries, eggs, sausages, fruit and juice while we listened to guest speaker, Carly Findlay.
Carly is an award winning writer, blogger, speaker and activist. She was born with a rare skin condition known as Ichthyosis, and spoke about being inclusive of everyone, standing up to bullies and the importance of considering the feelings of others when using social media.
We had the opportunity to meet and work with student leaders from other schools and enjoyed learning about teamwork and developing strategies to co-operate with people we didn’t previously know.
We really enjoyed our morning and thank Mr. Gibson and Mr. Grant for driving us to and from the venue.
Johanna Ivey, Zac McInnes, Mason McKenzie, Mara Ellis, Liam Muir and Lily McDonald.

SCHOOL BANKING School Banking day is FRIDAY Remember, Friday is School Banking day and students should bring in their weekly deposit. For every deposit made at school, students will receive a silver Dollarmites token. Once students have individually collected 10 tokens they can redeem them for an exclusive School Banking reward item in recognition of their regular savings habits. School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school, raising 5% on every deposit made through the school (to a maximum of $10 per individual deposit). If your child has lost their book, they can bring their money to school in a sealed envelope with a note on the next School Banking day. We will issue them with a replacement. Win a family adventure holiday at Tokyo Disneyland! This year, School Banking is running a Future Savers Grand Prize competition that will take one lucky School Banker all the way to Tokyo, Japan. The winner gets an unforgettable family trip, for up to two adults and three children, where they ’ll explore Tokyo Disneyland with its amazing attractions, including the futuristic Tomorrowland, plus enjoy the fun rides at Tokyo DisneySea. Students who make 15 or more School Banking deposits by the end of Term 3, 2017 will be automatically entered into the draw. This is another great way to motivate students to save regularly and reach their savings goals.
If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2017 School Banking program information pack from the school office or visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking
