MISSION

Mathematics is undoubtedly essential for natural, life

and social sciences. Therefore, the main mission of the

Mathematics Department is to offer high quality teac-

hing and research to all its undergraduate and graduate

students.

The department aims not only to teach the main ideas

and methods of mathematics but also to build up stu-

dent’s mathematical reasoning and analytical skills in a

convenient environment.

The Department offers a rich variety of undergraduate

courses which are designed to prepare students for gra-

duate study in mathematics or in related areas of the

natural sciences, social sciences and engineering.

MATHEMATICS CAREER

B.S. program provides a good foundation for those who

wish to pursue careers in research, or in related areas of

science and technology.

By improving their computer programming abilities,

graduates can also work as computer specialists in vari-

ous state and private sector organizations.

Mathematicians, who have Pedagogy Certificate, are

also employed as Mathematics Teachers at high scho-

ols.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department was founded as the “Institute of Mathe-

matics” of Ankara Faculty of Science which was started

education in the building of Gazi Institute of Education

in 1943. Then, in 1946, merged to the new founded

Ankara University as a part of Faculty of Science. The

Deparment progressed rapidly and took part in the deve-

lopment of the Mathematics Departments of the other

Universities of Turkey. The Major Scientific Branches

of the Deparment are Algebra and Number Theory,

Theory of Real and Complex Functions, Geometry,

Fundamentals of Mathematics and Mathematical Logic,

Applied Mathematics, Functional Analysis and Topo-

logy.

The Department admits appoximately 120 undergradua-

te students every year. The B.S. degree in Mathematics

is granted to a candidate, who has fulfilled the require-

ments of the undergraduate Mathematics curriculum, as

well as satisfying the general requirements for this deg-

ree. The Department also offers M.S. and Ph.D. prog-

rams in all areas of Mathematics

Starting with the academic year of 2016-2017, our de-

partment offers a B.S. degree program in Mathematics

teaching in English with an enrollment quota of 30 do-

mestics and 15 international students. For the program

in English, students will be admitted to B.S. program

according to the exam results obtained from Ankara

University Examination for Foreign Students (AYÖS)

and other equivalent exams (SAT I, ACT, International

Baccalaureate, ABITUR, etc.).

“As every mathematician knows, nothing is

more fruitful than these obscure analogies, these

indistinct reflections of one theory into another,

these furtive caresses, these inexplicable disagre-

ements …”

André Weil
