 Nepal–Annapurna Sanctuary 2 www.walksworldwide.com

IntroductionThis wonderful, fairly short walk to the truly wondrous Annapurna Sanctuary rightfully deserves thereputation as a classic and is widely regarded as one of the easier true, great Himalayan treks. For

majestic high mountain scenery and ever changing, picturesque landscapes, this moderate trek ishard to beat. Passing through delightful villages with neatly terraced rice fields through forests ofRhododendron and Oak to the renowned viewpoint of Poon Hill, an awe inspiring mountain panoramaunfolds with the rising sun. Mighty Dhaulagiri dominates the skyline across the deepest valley in theworld, the Kali Gandaki, whilst Annapurna South looms high above in front of us. Entering the ModiKhola valley, the twin summits of Machhapuchre (Fishtail) become apparent and ascending graduallyup the valley, we pass through cultivated lands and forest and up into bamboo woodlands emerging toenter an amazing throne room of mountain gods, the Annapurna Sanctuary. This high mountainamphitheatre is reached by walking through a narrow, natural portal that retained the secret of theSanctuary until 1956. Here at the foot of snow covered giants, the mountains of the Annapurna Massifare revealed in close up detail and amazing clarity. After descending into the beautiful Modi Khola wetransfer to Pokhara. Here at Lakeside in Pokhara we can relax at Phewa Tal before flying back toKathmandu, where no doubt we’ll celebrate the end of a short, but truly delightful Himalayan journey.

__________________________________________________________________________

Routine During the trek your main baggage istransported by porters and you’ll walk eachday through small villages (with refreshmentson sale) to your next trekking lodge, in thecompany of your friendly, experienced andqualified Nepalese guide. Usually you’ll takebreakfast at your overnight halt and your mainbaggage will set off in advance. You’ll walk for

a few hours in the morning, then stop for luncheither at a village, or take a scenic picnic, thencontinue your trek in the afternoon and reachyour next stop in the late afternoon. Dinner willusually be taken at your overnight lodge.

Walking conditions Underfoot the trekking conditions on most ofthis trip are fairly straightforward following verygood trails. As your main baggage is carriedfor you, you will only need to carry your regulardaypack during the walking day. The dailydistances we walk are relatively modest (by

Himalayan trekking standards) although withthe trails usually being either steep up ordown, this popular trek still represents amoderate challenge, especially when trekkingabove 3000m. It is essential that you arecapable of walking 5-7 hours a day (bothascent and descent) for several daysconsecutively.

A full explanation of the trip grading can befound online at www.walksworldwide.com. Youshould ensure you are comfortable walking atthis level of grading and are physically

prepared for the trip.

Walk staff You will be accompanied by anexperienced, friendly English-speaking,qualified Sherpa guide, as well as porters totransport your main baggage throughout thetrekking days.

What you need to provide Your personalequipment as detailed in the clothing andequipment list later in this trip dossier.

Ecological considerations  We believe thatwe are one of the most ecologically aware touroperators in Nepal. We ask for your fullconsideration and co-operation concerning allecological matters, especially in the disposal ofrubbish. Disposal of plastic mineral waterbottles is especially of concern in theHimalaya. If you have any suggestions forimprovements, please let our local staff knowand inform us at Walks Worldwide on yourreturn. It is with the tourists, the locals and thetour operators' co-operation that we canensure that our tours are as eco-friendly as

possible.

Day 1Depart UK and fly to Kathmandu

Day 2Arrive in vibrant Kathmandu. Rendezvous at

the group hotel in Kathmandu no later than1900hrs. (See Joining Arrangements andTransfers section later in this trip dossier). There will be a pre-trek group meeting at1930hrs.Hotel, Kathmandu

Day 3 A short, but dramatic flight takes us past thegiant Manaslu to Pokhara. From here we’lltransfer to the trailhead at Nayapul andcommence this fabulous trek to the AnnapurnaSanctuary. After descending from the road wefollow the rivers course to Birethanti (1025m).

The next couple of hours are uphill on astepped trail (apparently there are 3767 stepsin all) to reach the village of Hille (1524m).Crossing a suspension bridge just beyondTikhedunga, we then enter an area of denseforest to ascend for a further hour to ourovernight halt at Ulleri (1960m). Walking timeapprox. 5 hours.Trekking Lodge, Ulleri

Day 4A fairly challenging day as an undulating, uneven trail over several small hills leads to

another stepped trail, which we ascend. Enroute we pass several Teahouses with

refreshments on sale, as well as many smalltribal homes. As we climb, we are eventuallytreated to glimpses of Annapurna South.Moving steadily higher we enter a woodedarea with large bamboo trees and beyondBanthanti (2300m) the vegetation becomes

increasingly dense. Emerging from this jungleat Nangathanti (2520m) after climbing moresteps a further hour of trekking brings us toGhorepani. Although Ghorepani means ‘horsewatering place’, there’ll be lots of trekkersincluding ourselves here in Ghorepaniquenching their thirst, as this is the meetingpoint of several trails. Walking time approx. 5hours.Trekking Lodge, Ghorepani

Day 5 Poon Hill is one of the classic Himalayanviewpoints. Sunrise is the best time to beastride Poon Hill and view the spectacle of the

early morning light turning the snow coveredHimalaya pink. So, we’ll make the 1hourascent in the dark before the sun comes up.Usually one or two enterprising locals are therebefore us with a hot cuppa for sale as we waitfor it all to happen. As the sun comes up andilluminates the peaks the effect of the light issomewhat dreamlike as a magnificentmountain panorama unfolds. Directly in front ofus Annapurna South and the satellite peak ofHiunchuli are revealed in close up glory.Across the Kali Gandaki mighty Dhaulagirionce again dominates, whilst to the east the

iconic Fishtail, Machhapuchre can be seen. Onvery clear days you can also see over to

Pokhara and the lake there. Walking timeapprox. 6 hours. Back to Ghorepani forbreakfast and then we follow a trail that takesus northwards along a ridgeline that affords usmagnificent views of the Annapurna Massif. Asteep descent leads to a small settlement from

where we enter a heavily forested gorge. Asthe gorge widens we descend a little morebefore making the short, upward climb toTadapani (2590m)Trekking Lodge, Tadapani

Day 6As we descend through Rhododendron forestwe begin to enter the hills that form one side ofthe scenic Modi Khola Valley. ReachingChuile, we contour through pleasant terracedfields. Crossing the Kymnu Khola, a short

climb brings us into the Modi Khola Valleyproper which will ultimately leads us to theAnnapurna Sanctuary. A short walk afterpassing through Daaulu, we arrive atChomrong (2170m).Walking time approx. 6hours.Trekking Lodge, Chomrong

Day 7The next day the trail descends to cross theChommro Khola, then climbs around into theModi Khola valley and up on to the main ridgehigh above the river. Stands of rhododendron,

oak and hemlock line the gorge, and the areais a delight for bird lovers. After another two

hours of walking, mostly up steep hills, wereach the village of Sinuwa (2,340m), the lasttown before Bamboo. The iconic Fishtail whichwe will first have viewed upon arrival as adramatic Pyramid shaped peak, will have nowrevealed it’s twin summits and the reason for

it’s ‘other’ name. We follow the valley climbingsteadily uphill to Doban (2505m).Approximately two hours later we reach ourovernight destination, Himalayan(2920m). Walking time approx. 7 hoursTrekking Lodge, Himalayan

Day 8It’s a relatively short walk today as we steadilygain altitude and we may start to encountersections of ice on the trail as we move everdeeper into the realms of the mountain gods.Passing the fire-blackened overhang of theHinko Cave, the lodges of Deorali come intoview, which affords fine views back down theModi Khola Valley. A final push takes usacross the upper reaches of the Modi Khola to

reach a level grass covered moraine wherethere are a number of lodges in an areacommonly referred to as MachhapuchreBasecamp (3700m). With impressive views ofthe fearsome steep slopes and ridges ofMachhapuchre we have now entered throughthe narrow gateway of the Sanctuary. Walkingtime approx. 4-5 hours.Trekking Lodge, Machhapuchre Basecamp

Day 9 In actual fact today is remarkably short andstraightforward as we walk to one of the most

dramatic mountain environments on earth. From our previous nights accommodation the

walk in begins as a fairly easy angled ascentthat becomes even more dramatic with eachstep. A short, final steep climb brings us intothis throne room of the mountain gods.

We’ll leave early in the morning to avoid theclouds rolling in and obscuring what it is atotally unbelievable sight, in this most

impressive amphitheatre of Himalayanleviathans. Seemingly impenetrable snowcovered giants with a multitude of seracs, steep angled slopes and long, jagged ridgessurround us and now we will begin toappreciate truly why this place has beennamed Sanctuary. From left to right the list ofthese peaks include Hiunchuli, AnnapurnaSouth, Baraha Shikar (Fang), mightyAnnapurna I, Singu Chuli (Fluted Peak) andTharpu Chuli (Tent Peak). The Base Camp liesat the foot of the Annapurna Glacier's lateralmoraine, and from the top of the moraine we

can see the gray, rock-strewn bulk of thisglacier far below. The rumble of rock and iceslides coming off Annapurna South frequentlybreaks the silence of the Sanctuary. Walkingtime approx. 3 hours.Trekking Lodge, Annapurna Basecamp

Day 10We now leave the Sanctuary to follow a routethat initially was also our ascent route, but thenultimately take an alternative route viaGhandruk. So, today is virtually all descent to asmall settlement called Bamboo

(2335m).Walking time approx. 7 hoursTrekking Lodge, Bamboo

Day 11A bit more up and down today, Two longascents followed by two long descents bring us

to Chomrong from where the trail climbs to aspur ridge overlooking Jhinu Danda (1,780m).From here we have one last close-up glimpseof Machhapuchare,Hiunchuli, and AnnapurnaSouth. Entering Kimrong Khola valley the trailevens out for a while and the walking is easy!We arrive at the junction with the route fromGhorepani and just beyond the village ofKimrong (1,780m), the trail suddenly drops inshort, steep switchbacks, then through openrock-strewn fields to the 'Gurung' village ofGhandruk (1,940m), a village which has grownlarge and prosperous thanks to the pensions of

retired Gurkha soldiers.Walking time approx. 7hours.Trekking Lodge, Ghandruk

Day 12A relatively easy final day of trekking as wedescend from Ghandruk on a wide paved trailinto increasingly lush landscapes to reach thebanks of the Modi Khola River. A fairly levelwalk brings us back to Birethanti from whereit’s a mere 45 minutes back to the roadheadwhere we’ll transfer to the laid back Lakesideresort area on the outskirts of Pokhara.

Checking into a hotel, the rest of the afternoonis free to explore the Lakeside area and/or

liable, for losses incurred relating to any flightbookings or subsequent travel arrangementsyou have made yourself.

Once your chosen holiday has reached‘guaranteed’ status we will contact you

Passports and VisasBritish nationals will need a visa for Nepal. Youwill also need a valid passport with at least 6months remaining validity. By far the easiestway to obtain a visa for Nepal is upon arrival atKathmandu International Airport. You will needa passport size photograph and the visa fee, which is payable in US Dollars/Sterling etc. Atthe time of writing the visa fee is $25 for a 15day visa and $40 for a 30 day visa and may besubject to change at short notice. You can alsoapply for a visa from the Nepalese Embassy in

your own country.

Accommodation will be reserved for you on atwin share basis in hotels unless you havealready requested a single room at asupplementary cost. Please note that thesingle supplement applies ONLY to nightsspent in Hotels in Kathmandu. Whilst on trek itis not possible to reserve a single room inadvance, however it may be possible toarrange single rooms at each lodge uponarrival at each lodge (subject to availability)and pay the cost difference locally. In

Kathmandu you will usually be staying in agood standard tourist class hotel, with en suitefacilities and swimming pool. On trek you willstay in simple, atmospheric and very friendlyNepalese trekking lodges (tea houses).Although the lodges are simple, consideringthe incredible distance they are from thenearest road most people are amazed theyactually exist at all. You will need a sleepingbag and thermarest (camping mat) whilststaying in lodges. Rooms in trekking lodgeswill be basic but comfortable, with a simplewooden bed and all will have some form of

shared toilet and washing facilities. Roomsmay be a mixture of twin-bedded rooms orsmall dorm rooms. Staying in lodges is clearlymore comfortable than camping and is a greatway of meeting both locals and fellow trekkersalike. Beer and soft drinks are usually availablewherever you are.

Food In Kathmandu there is a dizzying selection ofrestaurants to choose from, serving bothdelicious local and International cuisine to suita broad range of tastes and budgets. Whilst on

trek most meals will be taken at the varioustrekking lodges along the way. The trekking

lodges have to source most of their food locallydue to their extremely remote locations, so youcan expect similar menus in each lodge basedon fresh local produce. From local specialitiessuch as Dal Bhat, to Noodle Soups and ‘havea go’ cooking western style dishes and usually

vegetarian options, rice and noodle dishes.Breakfasts will usually be simple affairs withporridge, eggs, toast etc and lunches will eitherbe taken at lodges along the way, or picnicstyle.  During the trek it is possible to buysnacks, chocolate, soft drinks and beer onmost days. Please be aware that sinceeverything has to be carried up from theroadhead (and the rubbish carried out), theseitems become more expensive the further fromthe roadhead you get.

Climate

It is of course impossible to predict the preciseweather conditions you will encounter duringthe course of your holiday. However, we doschedule our holidays to coincide with whatshould be the most suitable weather periodsfor walking, either side of the monsoon and nottoo hot or cold for trekking, although it will becolder (but often also crystal clear) at higheraltitudes, with the possibility of snow and nighttime temperatures falling below freezingtowards the highest points of this trek.Mountains are notorious for creating their own, localised weather conditions, so you should

always be prepared for inclement weatherconditions. For climate statistics visitwww.worldweather.org/ .Roughly speaking temperatures decrease byapprox. 1ºC for every 200 metre increase inaltitude.

AltitudeThis trek involves going to moderately highaltitudes, but is not something to be worriedabout. Most people adapt to altitude quite welland there is plenty of oxygen even at thehighest point of this trip. But, you should take

care to allow yourself to acclimatise. You cando this by ensuring you drink between 3 and 6litres of liquid each day, and walk at a paceslower than you perhaps usually would, especially at the outset and when ascending. We are always happy to give further advice onaltitude related concerns.

Local transportIncluded transfers will usually be by car ormini-bus. You will also fly to from Kathmanduto Pokhara and to Kathmandu from Pokhara.

Malarial prophylaxis is not

There are also ATM machines in

Pokhara.

LanguageAlthough your guide will speak English, it’salways a good idea to take along aEnglish/Nepalese phrase book and learn a fewsimple words to greet the local people.

Tipping This is at your discretion and we must stressthat tips do not form part of the wages of yourguide and trek crew. However, Nepalesepeople are as a rule incredibly cheerful andfriendly and nothing ever seems too muchtrouble for them. Your guide and trek crew willbe no exception. If you have received goodservice, a tip at the end of your trek will begreatly appreciated. As a guideline werecommend an amount of £2 per groupmember per day for Porters tips, which will bepooled and shared out collectively. For your

guide we suggest £15 per group member isnot unreasonable.
