JOIN or RENEW TODAY !! ____________________ Giving Circles Across the Country Did you know that AAWGT is one of 38 independent women’s giving circles across the country who have come together through the Women’s Collective Giving Grantmaking Network (WCGN) to share best practices and successes in the name of collective philanthropy? Together we are 7,500 women strong...with a total giving to date of $58 million in non-profit awards to non-profits nationwide? In April, AAWGT’s own Bronwyn Belling and Mary Grace Folwell represented AAWGT at the WCGN conference in St. Louis. AAWGT awards over$94,000 in grants

On May 14, the AAWGT membershipvoted to award $94,265.86 to sevenarea nonprofit organizations,supporting programs that improve thelives of women and families in AnneArundel County bringing AAWGT'stotal of dollars invested in Countynon-profits to almost $600,000 since2007!

This year, 28 members participatedin a rigorous and deliberative reviewprocess conducted by the GrantsCommittee which produced a slate ofqualified finalists on which themembership voted. The proposalsreflected the broad range of women’sneeds and service responses.

The AAWGT grantees chosen by themembership for 2014-15 are:

Anne Arundel Mental HealthAgency: Youth Suicide Awareness– provides training for parents,teachers, professionals andemergency responders to increaseidentification of and intervention forsuicidal youth and reduce suicidelosses.

Center of Help: Homework Helpand Leadership Program – provides Hispanic students with math

experiences at this conference(and what the connection is withthe pictured Build-A-Bear bear!)by clicking here!

Mental Health Part 1:The Big Discussion: Who,What, Where, How, Why

Did you know over the course of ayear, one quarter of the populationwill experience mental illness?Come hear two communityexperts discuss mental health inAnne Arundel County: the rangeof mental health issues, availableservices, gaps in services andpromising solutions. FrankSullivan, former Executive Directorof the Anne Arundel CountyMental Health Agency, andMichael Drummond, ExecutiveDirector of Arundel Lodge, willengage in a joint discussion onthis timely and important topic. Hosted by Anne Arundel MedicalCenter in the Cathy and JohnBelcher Pavilion, 7th floor in theDoordan Institute. Register today

AAWGT Wins Awardduring The Great GiveOur thanks to all who donated toCFAAC’s Great Give anddesignated that you were part ofAAWGT! The result? AAWGT wonthe award for the most participantsand were given $2,000 to award toan Anne Arundel County non-profit of our choosing — wahoo! Atour May membership meeting, thisunrestricted $2,000 was awardedto the YWCA of Annapolis andAnne Arundel County.Congratulations to all for makingthis possible!

and English tutoring, homework help,and participation in activities to fosterintegration into the community.

Food Link: Wholesale CharitableProduce Distribution – distributesdonated and purchased fresh fruitsand vegetables free to those in needthrough a variety of participatingcharitable organizations.

The Light House: Family CaseManagement – provides staff to actas navigator and advocate fornecessary services that help stabilizeand preserve families living togetherin homelessness or reunite separatedhomeless families.

Partners in Care – utilizes a largevolunteer base to providetransportation, home repair and otherservices to elderly people allowingthem to stay in their own homes.

Planned Parenthood of Maryland:Clinical Services for Women in AACounty – will provide free access toa wide range of well-woman servicesand reproductive health care forwomen unable to afford any co-pay.

YWCA of Annapolis and AnneArundel County – providestherapeutic services for women andchildren who are victims of sexualassault and domestic violence. Thisgrant would enable necessaryservices to be provided for all clientswithin 48 hours.

Spring Open House

Over 75 members and guestsgathered at the Historic William PacaHouse and Gardens on April 9. Thetheme for the event wasmembership. President Karen Smithspoke to key aspects of membership- Learning, Giving and Networking.

Your Dollars at Work

20 AAWGT members cametogether on May 23 and toured thenew Family Literacy Center at theBrooklyn Park Community Library(BPCL), a 2013 AAWGT Grantee. Today’s libraries are much morethan books. In the new era,libraries are community centers,safe havens that provide manyservices that especially benefit theunderserved.

AAWGT’s grant was used to fundinteractive wall tiles (learning tool),a craft reading bench and puppettheater to enhance the FamilyLearning Center. Equallyimportant, according to BrooklynPark Community Library BranchManager Catherine McNamara“AAWGT’s grant allowed theLibrary to lure great staff with ourgreat new facilities.”

Buddies Needed

There is a tradition in AAWGT thatevery new member gets a ‘Buddy’for their first year to help themnavigate the waters and meetother members. And that's whereYOU come in!

This important assignment simplyinvolves being a friend - staying intouch - calling or emailing your“buddy” before meetings - andhelping her feel welcome as a newmember of AAWGT. It doesn't

Busch, Chair and Paula Abernethy,Co-Chair then took the stage alongwith a panel of five members –Sharon Stewart (Founder ofAAWGT), Barbara Hoffstein(Founding member), Jenny Kottler(Current Secretary and membersince 2010), Lois Kelberman (CurrentEducation Asst. Chair and membersince 2012), and Sally Iadorola (Newmember). The panel was asked aseries of questions regarding theirinvolvement in the organization.
