Noamundi Iron Mine was started way back in 1925 with manuat~.Wn.g. Afte!. ....<
expansion of the Steel Works at Jamshedpur, the mine was partially ih~al!W~tfiI;i~.;:/)'<1953 after which it has been gradually developed into a fully mechalliselt''affU;'
environment friendly mine over the past few decades. Mining operations have so far
been confined to the Eastern and Western Ridges separated by Balijhor nallah. The
mine has been the major captive source for meeting demand of Iron Ore for Tata
Steel's Jamshedpur Plant and will continue to be so in foreseeable future.
a) Method of mining
Mechanized method of open cast mining has been adopted for mining iron ore in a
series of 12 m high benches with the help of shovel-dumper combination. The
minimum bench width in the working benches shall be maintained at 25 m while in
the ultimate stage, the bench width shall be reduced to 12 m thus having a final pit
slope of 45 degrees. Drilling is done using 150/165 mm diameter drills with 10%
sub grade drilling. Secondary drilling (if required) is done by Jackhammer or
boulders are broken with rock breaker or splitted with the help of hydraulic splitter.
Blasting is done by adopting the State of Art technology by using mostly SME (Site
Mixed Emulsion Explosives) along with conventional explosives such as PGC and
Toeblast. Both conventional as well as Nonel (non-electric initiation) blasting are
being done. The blasted material is excavated by shovels and loaded onto 50160/1 00
tonne dumpers for transportation of the ROM, subgrade or waste.
Rigorous quality control procedure is adopted in the mine to avoid mixing of ore,
subgrade and waste. Blasthole drill cuttings are sampled and analyzed in the
laboratory using Inductively coupled plasma spectrophotometer (ICP) for Iron
values. Depending upon the analysis results, mine face is demarcated as Ore,
subgrade and waste zones and daily schedule for the material hauling is prepared
accordingly. The Subgrade is stacked separately at the earmarked place. Waste
rocks encountered during the course of mining are handled separately and used for
bench floor leveling, making berms etc. The ROM is transported from different
mining faces in a pre-determined proportion (for blending different qualities of ore),
and deliver the same to the processing plant. The blending is aimed at maintaining
the alumina content of ROM at the desired range of 2.8% - 3.5% in Wet ROM feed
and 1.6% - 2.2% in Dry ROM feed. In the Processing Plant, the ore is crushed,
washed and screened followed by classification and jigging to produce lumps and
fines ore. The haul roads are maintained with a gradient of less than 1 in 16 except
for short ramps, which have a maximum gradient of 1 in 10. The floor level of each
bench is maintained by employing graders and dozers. This helps in easy, safe and
efficient mobility of HEMM.

Mining Method at B1ock-II/IIA & WR (Jojo Area): Block-IIIIIA and Jojo area of
Noamundi iron Mine is proposed to be developed from 2013-14, after award of
dereservation proposal from MOEF (Gal). Initially, this Block shall beoperated
with mechanized method of mining with 6m bench height. Drilling shall bedone b1"_-_ . - '
1OOmmdrill with 10% sub grade drilling. Blasting shall be done by using SME (Site
Mixed Emulsion explosives) along with other conventional explosives. Shovel and
dumper combination shall be used for excavating and loading of ROM. The ROM
shall be transported to beneficiation plant at Noamundi.
Discontiguous Ore Bodies: The steel company has long term conceptual plan to
work in all the discontiguous blocks of Mining lease viz Block IV, V, VA and VI.
Presently, Mining cannot be carried out in these discontiguous blocks either because
of want of various statutory clearances or unavailability of technology for
beneficiation of low grade ores.
As advised by IBM, Kolkata office, we have already sent sample of 300 kg low
grade iron ore from Block-VI area for beneficiation testing at Modern Mineral
Processing Laboratory and Pilot plant, Indian Bureau of Mines, MIDC, Nagpur for
further testing and analysis. Future plan of the area will be based on the results of
beneficiation test.
Manual Mining: There is a existence of Incidental ore/Float ore along the
periphery of the lease area predominantly between the lease pillar nos 5 to 8 located
along the slopes of Eastern ridge (between the grids 12200N to 13800N and 12600E
to 13400E) . To prevent unauthorized workings and theft of float ore, it is proposed
to win the incidental/float ores as per following production schedule.
