Preschool students from 1968 gather in the

church courtyard (now the locaon of Fellowship Hall).

Anniversary Festivities On Saturday, May 7, All Saints Preschool and Child Care

commemorates two big milestones. The half-day preschool,

which opened in September 1966, celebrates its 50th

anniversary. The full-day Child Care Center opened in

September of 1985 and is celebrating its 30th anniversary.

These programs have nurtured the early development of

thousands of students with a faith-based preparation for

learning and life. Today, both programs are nationally

accredited by the National Association for the Education of

Young Children and highly regarded in the community. At this

time, preschool and child care maintain waiting lists for

classes. And now we are seeing alumni parents bring their

children to All Saints for the same high-quality educational

start they experienced.

All Saints Preschool and Child Care thanks the congregation

and church staff for their support over all these years. We are

proud to represent our church to the young families of our

community.

On Saturday, May 7, from 2–5 p.m., we’re celebrating these

milestones with an event at the church. All are welcome!

Playgrounds throughout the years. Clockwise from le"

are photos from 1972, 1994, and the current playground.

Turning the Page As part of the conclusion of my annual report I wrote: As the Call Committee

moves closer to identifying a candidate for All Saints’ new lead pastor, our time

together nears completion. During this time, I believe that All Saints has worked

through some controversies and conflicts — both ones that led to this interim time

as well as new ones that arose during it. For instance, during this past year we’ve

addressed and resolved the challenging issues mentioned in this report involving

finances, combining of budgets and reducing staffing costs. From my perspective,

All Saints has made progress in congregational healing and rebuilding of trust.

I hope and pray that what we’ve accomplished together will help your new

chapter begin on solid footing.

The staffing cost reduction plan was something we would rather have avoided. It

was neither easy to develop nor to announce. But I think it has gone as well as

could be hoped for. One of the reasons, in my opinion, is trust. I observed the

Council trusting the Executive Committee (in their role as Personnel) to

thoughtfully develop a reasonable plan. I observed the congregation trusting the

Council which unanimously endorsed this plan. And I observed our staff trusting

congregational leaders who did their best to balance appropriate staffing levels

with the congregation’s current size and financial parameters. This kind of trust

bodes well for the health and future of All Saints. Rebuilding trust when trust has

been eroded is a slow process. I’m very hopeful that this trust will continue to

strengthen as your new lead pastor joins you in your new chapter.

And that new chapter is about to begin! The Call Committee announced on

Sunday, May 1, at worship services and during the Annual Meeting that they’ve

identified a final candidate for All Saints’ new lead pastor. They will make a

presentation about this candidate to the Council on Monday, May 16. After

endorsing the Call Committee’s selection and meeting the candidate (and spouse),

the Council will send a letter to the congregation near the end of May with

information about the candidate and an announcement about a special

Congregational Meeting on Sunday, June 5, to vote on calling this candidate to

serve All Saints. The candidate will meet with staff later this month to begin

building those important relationships. I’ll be completing my time with you in

mid-June and your new lead pastor will start in mid-July. (See bullet point

timeline at right). I believe the future is bright for All Saints! Thanks be to God!

– Pastor Bruce C. Arnevik, Interim Lead Pastor

Outreach Ministry

From Tears of Shame to Tears of Joy “Jake” came to Hospitality House as a last resort. He had

attended several schools, none of which really worked out,

and had just been kicked out of his umpteenth afterschool

program. Jake’s mom was told that Jake needed

specialized treatment. She couldn’t take any more time off

work for unplanned trips to pick Jake up from school and

was informed that he could no longer be brought to her

workplace. She thought she was about to lose her job.

Having heard of Hospitality House, she wondered if they

would take Jake. She held back the tears as she explained

Jake’s situation. After a long meeting, Jake was placed on

a probationary period at Hospitality House.

When Jake came he was very quiet and withdrawn. He did

not say much or participate in activities. But, there were no

outbursts or uncontrolled anger. Over the following weeks

a loving Hospitality House staff prayed for Jake and tried

to help him in whatever way they could. He slowly

adjusted to the routine and established working

relationships with the staff.

It appeared that things were going to be okay for him at

Hospitality House. However, Jake would not play games

during gym time. He did not care for basketball or any

other games. He just sat.

Jake would not play with the staff or anyone else. This

behavior continued without any improvement. Finally his

mother told Jake that he had to play basketball. Even

though he protested, his mother insisted that he play. He

became a player on Coach Pratt’s team. I had my doubts

about Jake being on this team because even though

Coach Pratt has coached for almost 30 years in North

Minneapolis, his approach with kids was like a drill

sergeant on steroids.

I had the chance to talk to Coach Pratt after the season was

over. He was amazed at Jake’s improvement. When Jake

started on the team he would not run — not during

practice, the game, or anytime. After several encouraging

(loud) words, Coach Pratt got Jake to run. Then he got him

to start dribbling, and to shoot, and to play. Coach Pratt

said it was a miracle, one of the most amazing things he

has seen in his 28 years of being a Christian coach. Jake’s

team beat North Commons (the eventual city champions),

and Jake had an incredible game. He played so hard. He

worked so hard. He practiced. He became part of the team.

He knew he belonged.

Thank you, All Saints, for your support of Hospitality

House. It makes an incredible difference in many young

people’s lives. Someone who was once outside, someone

who struggled in almost every way, now has a big smile on

his face and enjoys life. His mom talked about this

transformation at one of our family night events. This time

her tears were many, but they were filled with joy for what

had happened to her little boy.
