A Year of SuccessThisyearSIFESurreyhasseenavastarrayofprojectsgrowingfrommodestrootsintohighquality,highimpactSIFEprojects.
InthefirstyearthatSIFESurreyhasseenasuccessfulandsustainablehandoverprocess,wehavebeenabletobuilduponworkandexperiencefromlastyear.
Thisyearwewillbepresentingtwomainprojects,OakleafandRICycleandbrieflysummarisingtwomore;UniteUgandaandWheelpower.

ResultsThroughourworkshopsandcontacts,weempowered
threeofourclientstogainworkexperienceinalocal
cafe,onehasbeenofferedajob.Theremainingclients
arecurrentlyintheapplicationprocess.
VisionOurclearvisionforthisprojectistosetupasocial
enterprisewhichcanprovideemploymentfortheclients.
IBMhaverecognisedtheworkwehavedonesofar,and
arestartingtosupportuswithworkshopsfortheclients
overthenextfewmonths.
One in four people in the UK suffer from a mental illness
each year, with some left unemployed. We have been
working with a Guildford based charity to help their clients
get back into employment.

ActionWewereabletodevelopauseforthewasteproductofrice,husk(theoutershell).Insteadofburningit,wetaughtthevillagersthroughaseriesofworkshopshowtouseitasapillowstuffing.Notonlydoesthishaveenvironmentalbenefits,butbecausethericehuskcanbeusedevenifthecropisdestroyed,itguaranteesa
secondarysourceofincome.
ResultSofartheco-operativehasbeenabletosell30pillows,whichhasnotonlygivenincometothosewholostitduetoflooding,butincreasedincomeforthosestillearningbyalmost23%overasixweekperiod.
VisionWehaveestablishedarelationshipwithoneofthelargestNGOsinThailand,calledBREAD(BusinessforRuralEducationandDevelopment),andwiththeirhelpwilldevelopstrongerdistributionchannelstoBangkokoverthenextfewmonths,toincreasetheproject’ssustainability.
Following Thailand’s devastation from flooding in 2011, we
saw the opportunity to turn this disaster around and allow
the Thai farmers affected to develop a strong, resilient and
sustainable secondary source of income

A Strong Team in a Sustainable PositionAkeytargetforSIFESurreythisyearhasbeenensuringourteamsustainbilityismaximised.ThroughourBusinessAdvisoryBoardwehavebeenabletodevelopworkshopstoenhancetheexperienceofourteammembersandinturnenhanceourprojectquality.Withnearlytwothirdsofourmemberscurrentlyinfirstyear,weareinasustainblepositiontomoveforwardwithoutalossofmomentum.
