The President’s Address

By Dr. Dipa Patel, VSOMS President 2019-2020

Greetings to my esteemed oral and maxillofacial surgery colleagues. I am serving as President of VSOMS and it is

an honor to lead our strong society throughout the coming year.

We start this year with 250 members representing nearly 100% of oral surgeons in the state. Our 2019 Annual

Meeting, held in April at the Main in Norfolk, Virginia was a tremendous success, with over 100 members present.

The robust attendance enables us to maintain high quality speakers and secure ongoing vendor support. The support

from vendors allows us to defray the cost of meeting attendance for you, our members, and your staff.

The coming year may include some challenges in the world of office-based anesthesia. This comes in the wake of

the ASA’s position against a single provider model for pediatric sedation. VSOMS will be hard at work on the state

and national level to prevent any consequences for our members and patients.

In addition, the recent developments around loosening the restrictions of advertising for general practitioners has

been of concern.

For these reasons, your participation has never mattered more. This society solely exists to represent the interests of

oral surgeons in this state- your interests. You hold the knowledge of what you are dealing with in your daily

practice and, without your involvement and input, we are not able to fulfill our mission as your leaders. Participation

includes OMSPAC, the VDA PAC, and OMS Foundation contributions. It includes utilizing the OMS Outcomes

Registry (OMSQor), a database logging anesthesia numbers and morbidity/mortality to prove our safety. In the

potentially turbulent waters ahead, this data will be essential in defending our practice of office-based anesthesia.

Participation also includes local relationships with dental societies and building strong alliances and representing

ourselves as friendly partners to our dental colleagues. When the battles begin, those relationships make the

difference. Participation can ALSO include attending VA Board of Dentistry (BOD) meetings. The VSOMS always

has at least one representative at each BOD meeting. This helps us stay ahead of any actions being taken by the

BOD or by other general dentists or specialists.

In my time as a Delegate to the AAOMS House of Delegates and as a member of the VSOMS Executive Council, I

had absolutely no idea how many people are fighting for our rights and privileges every day. I did not know that we

have relationships with key representatives from the ASA, with Congresspersons and state legislators who represent

our interests or that we have members who travel to states where high profile adverse outcomes threaten our

privileges to prevent potentially devastating reactive legislation from being passed. There are also dedicated staff at

VSOMS and AAOMS to call when insurance companies are behaving badly.

There are so very many benefits that VSOMS and AAOMS afford our members each and every day and I encourage

you all to utilize them, and, if you are able to assist with any of these, please let Laura Givens or I know.

Thank you and please feel free to reach out to me throughout the year.

Sincerely,

Dipa J. Patel, DDS

Fee: $250

Continuing Education Credits: 4

Administered by: Emergency Management Services, Inc.

everyday and catastrophic emergencies since 1995. Weet Baldwin, who leads the staff of professional

educators, has had successes in fire and accident prevention and paramedics. He is currently a Chief

Tactical Medic for the Richmond Police SWAT Team and Medical Coordinator for NASCAR and IRL

events at the Richmond International Raceway. EMSI has no relevant financial relationships to disclose

Course Description:

The American Heart Association's Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support course is totally redesigned for

healthcare providers who either direct or participate in the resuscitation of a patient, whether in or out of

hospital. The teaching method involves lecture, however, ACLS is based on simulated clinical scenarios

that encourage active, hands-on participation through learning stations.

Educational Objectives:

Through the ACLS course, providers will enhance their skills in the treatment of the adult victim of a

cardiac arrest or other cardiopulmonary emergencies. ACLS emphasizes the importance of basic life

support CPR to patient survival; the integration of effective basic life support with advanced

cardiovascular life support interventions; and the importance of effective team interaction and

communication during resuscitation.

At each learning station, students will practice essential skills individually, as part of a team, and as team

leader. Realistic simulations reinforce the following key concepts: proficiency in basic life support care;

recognizing and initiating early management of peri-arrest conditions; managing cardiac arrest;

identifying and treating ischemic chest pain and acute coronary syndromes; recognizing other life-

threatening clinical situations (such as stroke) and providing initial care; ACLS algorithms; and effective

resuscitation team dynamics.
