Spring, 2012

Dear Friends,

The Volunteer Center of Bergen County tells an impressive tale during the past year of innovative practices with substantive results. Focused entirely in the arena of civic engagement, we take pride not only in deliver-ing programs of the highest quality, but also in assessing outcomes and incorporating fresh approaches to make our programs as effective as possible. While the economy continued to languish, our programs and activities generated support equal (almost) to the task. Our mission is to strengthen the community by connecting people with opportunities to serve, building capac-ity for effective volunteering, operating direct service volunteer programs, and participating in strategic part-nerships that meet community needs. One of our proudest accomplishments is having been designated as an Innovation Hub by HandsOn Net-work, our national affiliate partner. We are one of ten affiliates* considered to be a learning lab for communi-ty involvement capable of driving innovation, building strong leadership and advancing volunteer engage-ment through existing and acquired skills and knowledge. With funding provided by HandsOn Network, we will be developing and implementing programs to advance leadership and volunteerism in Bergen County in the months ahead. Here are highlights of our mission-driven activities that are described in the following pages: CONNECTING: • We launched a new cloud-based searchable database of agencies and their volunteer opportunities and

have so far seen approximately 14,000 page views every month. The database was developed by HandsOn Network, our national affiliate partner;

• We facilitated engagement of 2,643 individuals and 150 groups in volunteer activities through direct con-sultation and referral.

• We published the well-regarded Guide to Volunteering and distributed hundreds of copies free of charge to schools and libraries.

• We significantly upgraded our website and stepped up our presence on social networking sites and in our blog.

• RSVP helped 300 seniors respond to community needs through positions at 48 volunteer stations. • Our All Wrapped Up holiday giving program linked more than 700 volunteer donors from the community

with 4,000 people in need (881 individuals and 800 families) to fulfill “wish list” requests provided by 50 local agencies.

BUILDING CAPACITY: • Our Nonprofit Training & Resource Institute provided 450 participants with training in various aspects of

volunteer management and Board development. • We launched BoardLink to train Bergen LEADS graduates as well as people from the community in the

roles and responsibilities of serving on nonprofit boards. • Members of the Business Volunteer Council of Northern New Jersey gained professional development

skills in corporate volunteer program management to boost involvement of their employees in volunteer activities.

* Other iHub affiliates include New York Cares, Boston Cares, Chicago Cares, HandsOn Central Ohio, HandsOn Greater

Portland, HandsOn Twin Cities, Seattle Works, Volunteer Center of Santa Cruz County and the Marin Center for Volunteer and Nonprofit Leadership.

DIRECT SERVICE: • 50 volunteers with our Chore Service performed 4,489 home repairs that helped to keep 1,846 senior and/

or disabled clients living independently and safely in their homes. • Our two Mentoring Programs trained, screened, matched and supported caring mentors in one-on-one

mentoring relationships. ◊ Mentoring Youth: adult volunteers helped 118 youth with social, emotional or behavioral challeng-

es see and take steps toward a brighter future. ◊ Mentoring Moms adult women volunteers helped 84 overwhelmed, low-income mothers struggling

to sustain their families. • Our Bergen LEADS civic leadership program engaged 30 aspiring leaders in monthly seminars on topics of

critical concern while building their leadership skills and instilling a sense of trusteeship for our community. Many of the 100+ Bergen LEADS alumni have become deeply engaged volunteers: serving on boards, running for office (and winning!), starting nonprofits, and advocating for causes throughout our community.

• Our Business Volunteer Council participated in several strategic initiatives that helped low-income families and children:

◊ 12 companies collected nearly 5,000 new books and distributed them to pre-school children; nearly 60 BVC volunteers read to children in schools.

◊ 7 companies collected food and nearly $9,000 in cash to provide healthy meals for children who receive subsidized meals during the school year but not during the summer.

◊ 6 companies helped to build community gardens in partnership with four nonprofit partners. ◊ 6 companies collected nearly $20,000 in school supplies distributed to youth-serving organizations. ◊ The BVC hosted a Back-to-School fair in the fall and a “Big Book Give-Away” in the spring to bene-

fit families in our mentoring programs.

STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS • In the wake of Hurricane Irene, we put our leadership of the Bergen County VOAD into full operation, form-

ing a Long Term Recovery Group with leaders of several partner agencies to assist our neighbors still in need of assistance.

• Our Bergen LEADS program explored feasibility of taking over sponsorship of luncheons in months with a fifth Friday. Bergen LEADS Fifth Fridays are set to begin in March 2012, bringing together leaders across the county to network and learn about a topic ‘ripped form the headlines.’

• We celebrated National Volunteer Month with our annual Celebrate Volunteers event, during which we lauded the efforts of 300 volunteers from 40 partner agencies.

• We hosted a 45th Anniversary Gala -- With a Little Help from Our Friends -- honoring four Heart of Gold designees, featuring a fabulous Beatles cover band, and generating $85,000 in net proceeds.

• Our staff serves on Boards and/or as advisors to 29 organizations in our community. • In addition to the Innovation Hub initiative, we worked closely with our national affiliate partner, HandsOn

Network. Staff leaders were engaged in HON’s Corporate Volunteer Council Advisory Council, Affiliate Membership Committee, Affiliate Standards Committee, Generation On Task Force, Points of Light Youth Leadership Institute Task Force, and Global Service Task Force.

These impressive accomplishments are possible only because of the dedicated volunteers who give freely of themselves to make our community a better place in which to live, work and go to school; distinguished leaders across our community who provide guidance as members of our program advisory councils; our highly compe-tent staff, skilled in program management and community outreach; and – especially - our donors: the individu-als, corporations, foundations, civic groups and government agencies who believe in what we do and dedicate resources to make our work possible. While are pleased to express our thanks to all of those who have made our work possible during the past year, we look with eager anticipation to your continued support and involvement in the months ahead.

Our Community Volunteer Services department delivers a mission-critical service: connecting prospective volun-teers with opportunities to serve.

Committed to supporting volunteerism and civic participation, we provide information, consultation and referral to individuals and groups including schools, businesses (see page 6), organizations and communities of faith.

We offer two helpful resources to as-sist those interested in volunteering in or near Bergen County: the printed Guide to Volunteering and our web-site at www.bergenvolunteers.org.

Web Presence Our website contains important infor-mation about programs and services of the Volunteer Center of Bergen County and provides a comprehen-sive database of volunteer opportuni-ties at non-profit agencies in and near Bergen County. This valuable resource is updated on a regular basis and al-lows prospective volunteers and groups to refine their search by keyword, loca-tion and area of interest. Visitors can also find links to numerous online re-sources relevant to volunteering, civic engagement and community steward-ship.

Last summer we launched a vastly improved website that incorporated a new database developed by our nation-al affiliate partner, HandsOn Network. Easy to navigate and to read, the web-site is designed to appeal to a range of volunteer audiences. The database lists 300 agencies and 800 volunteer positions, allows more interaction be-tween prospective volunteers and agencies, and provides easier, more comprehensive reporting. Nearly 165,000 searches for volunteer oppor-tunities hit last year, and more than 700 new volunteers registered on our site in the last 6 months of 2011.

Social networking is a priority in our communications, and we keep an ac-tive presence on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other social networking sites. Our blog is found at www.ber- genvolunteers.blogspot.com

Guide to Volunteering The Guide to Volunteering is a vital tool linking people who want to volun-teer with places in our community where their help is needed. The Guide provides information about a variety of specific volunteer positions at hundreds of public and private agencies as well as ideas and “how-to’s” about group projects, student project ideas and or-ganizing collections as well as lists of online resources. The guide is thor-oughly cross-referenced by type of activity, geographic location, area of interest, and suitability for students, groups, families, evening/weekend preference, or at-home volunteer as-signments. The 136-page book was printed by a generous local corporation and was distributed free of charge to schools and libraries early in 2010.

The Guide is also available as a down-loadable PDF on our home page at www.bergenvolunteers.org.

Youth Services

Throughout the year we provided con-sultation to schools and agencies in the area of youth volunteering and service learning. We provided customized trainings on team building and leader-ship development surrounding student service to the community.

Youth Leadership Institute In November, the Volunteer Center hosted a Youth Leadership Institute for 17 Bergen County students in grades 8-10. For two full days the students were immersed in activities that ex-plored leadership styles, team work, community mapping, stewardship and development of service projects.

The students worked hard and, yes, played hard as part of this energetic program designed specifically to spark in young people the desire to make a difference while providing them with the skills they will need to do just that.

BergenVolunTEENS

Bergen VolunTEENS is a special web presence that provides students, edu-cators, parents and community-based youth advisors with information about volunteering. In addition to helping to link students with volunteer jobs during the school year as well as in the sum-mertime, BergenVolunTEENS high-lights the service activities of students, schools, and youth-based organiza-tions across Bergen County.

Agency Services We consult frequently with non-profit agencies, helping them further their missions through effective engagement of volunteers. We help agencies de-fine their opportunities for volunteer involvement and encourage them to list their volunteer positions in our online searchable database and in the Guide to Volunteering. We promote volunteer management training and we encour-age agencies to welcome volunteers—students, families and individuals — who are only available for evening and weekend placements. We also partici-pated in various volunteer fairs at cor-porations, schools and community ven-ues and provided informational pro-grams about volunteering for agencies’ volunteers as well as their clients.

In 2011 we began to host regular Vol-unteer Managers Roundtables every other month. Volunteer managers, directors and coordinators meet over lunch to discuss issues facing volun-teer managers, voice concerns, and share information and insight with one another. These gatherings provide networking and information that builds stronger, more effective programs.

We continue to reach out to the com-munity, education and faith-based based organizations (see box at right) to encourage their use of the Volunteer Center as a helpful resource.

Ready to Respond The Volunteer Center continues to lead the Bergen County VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) to enhance communication with first re-sponding organizations, nonprofit agencies and communities of faith in preparing for and responding to disas-ters. We also participate in the New Jersey VOAD and participate on the Hands On Network’s Disaster Volun-teerism Task Force which helps affili-ate organizations respond to disasters.

We continue to play a role in convening service providers and marshaling re-sources to help our neighbors who were devastated by the effects of Hurri-cane Irene. This is a long-term pro-cess that will extend for several months.

Connecting Nationally We are an affiliate of Points of Light Insti-tute/HandsOn Network, and we are signed on with several technology-driven initiatives that are promoted regionally and nationally, making it as easy as possible for peo-ple anywhere in the country to find ways to volunteer:

In 2011, the 30 corporate members of the Northern New Jersey Business Volunteer Council (BVC) had cause to celebrate major accomplishments. The BVC marked its 11 years of service with an anniversary party. Since its founding, the BVC has grown from four member companies and has generated more than $1.2 million in resources for low-income children and families.

The BVC addresses three critical areas of need – literacy, hunger, and education – through a series of annual initiatives:

• 9 BVC companies and 3 community groups participated in Books in a Bag, an initiative designed to promote early childhood and family literacy, with over 4,600 total books distributed. Sixty employee volunteers representing four companies kicked off the event reading to children in local preschool programs and schools. Nearly 500 preschoolers were provided with backpacks filled with new books which were collected and distributed by employees from six employee volunteer programs. Six companies and three community groups donated almost 2,000 books to the Mentor BIG Book Giveaway, a free book fair in April for participants in the Volunteer Center’s mentoring programs.

• 7 BVC companies participated in Brown Bag Buddies, a summer food drive benefiting children who receive free or reduced-cost breakfast and lunch at school during the school year and whose families need extra assistance during summer vacation. Volunteers started in May and continued the effort through August, collecting more than $8,000 in “kid-friendly” food and cash, which was distributed to food pantries throughout Bergen County.

• 6 BVC member companies helped to launch the BVC’s innovative Community Food Garden program, installing four beds to provide food for needy kids and families. Through this initiative, the BVC is helping to increase access to fresh food and to promote healthy eating.

• 6 BVC member companies and other groups participated in Tools for School, collecting school supplies valued at over $19,000. The supplies were donated to BVC partners and other non-profit organizations, which distributed them to indi-vidual children and schools throughout the state.

A primary purpose of the BVC is to advance the practice of corporate community involvement and promote professional development of employee volunteer program managers. Condensed trainings are offered at BVC monthly meetings on such topics as developing relationships with non-profit organizations, marketing, and volunteer project management. Monthly meetings also provide companies with the opportunity to network with other corporate volunteer managers as well as representatives from

non-profit agencies.

The BVC is supported through membership fees and sponsor-ships. Administrative support is provided by staff in the Volunteer Center’s Business Volunteer Ser-vices department, which also provides consulting and expertise to companies interested in creat-ing or expanding employee vol-unteer initiatives.

2011 was an exciting year for Bergen LEADS! Newly-elected County leader-ship wholeheartedly support the pro-gram. Alumni total 86, and our “network of networks” continues to expand. Our partnership with the Meadowlands Re-gional Chamber of Commerce has bal-anced our geographic diversity. And our decision to continue Fifth Friday luncheons under the Bergen LEADS umbrella promises to meet with unprec-edented success in 2012.

PUBLIC FORUM ON THE FUTURE OF EDUCATION The culminating event of the seminar year took place at Bergen Community College in June. The Forum provided an opportunity for members of the Class of 2011 to present recommenda-tions to 200 community leaders on strategies to reduce the cost per stu-dent of public education by restructur-ing the way that schools do business.

BOARDLINK 3,600 non-profits call Bergen County home, and they all need knowledgeable and engaged leaders. Bergen LEADS BoardLink is an in-depth skill develop-ment program for current and prospec-tive members of nonprofit boards. Elev-en LEADS graduates and nine others completed the course, which is offered twice a year.

LEADERSHIP TOOLBOX Bergen LEADS’ enhanced leadership development curriculum gives gradu-ates the tools they need to lead in an increasingly complex world. We ex-panded our team to include Michele Brown, certified executive coach, who guides the class throughout the year on both personal development and team dynamics. We also retooled how the program addresses diversity, shifting from our more typical “Issue Day” ap-proach to one that focuses on intro-spection and personal development, providing class members skills for lead-ing in a diverse world.

ALUMNI OF BERGEN LEADS (ABL) ABL is a dynamic organization created to maintain and develop relationships formed in Bergen LEADS, serve the community, learn about local needs and resources, influence public policy and ensure program sustainability. ABL hosted social events, provided holiday gifts for needy neighbors, volunteered for service projects and sponsored Breakfast with Bergen LEADS, a pro-gram on wellness. ABL members are the moving force behind sponsorship of Fifth Friday luncheons, a powerful net-working and learning event which to be presented by Bergen LEADS in months with a fifth Friday beginning in 2012.

CITIZENSHIP Each September, we administer the Civic Engagement Survey to members of the new class. We administer the survey again about eight months after they complete the program. The results of the first two Bergen LEADS classes have been tabulated and they get an A+, with marked increases in several categories that measure civic engage-ment:

♦ 40% increase in working to resolve a community issue

♦ 35% increase in voting in local elec-tions

♦ 133% increase in campaigning for a candidate or cause

♦ 31% increase in advocating for a political candidate

♦ 31% increase in contributing to polit-ical campaign(s)

♦ 66% increase in raising money for charities

Mentoring Moms

Since 1995 Mentoring Moms has trained and supported adult women who volunteer to help mothers striving to become better parents while dealing with the challenges of daily living. Mothers are referred to the program from local child welfare and protective service agencies and other commu-nity programs. While each family dynamic varies, nearly all are single mothers who lack an effective network of support to help them deal with the ongoing responsibilities of parenting, life and family issues.

Mentoring Moms volunteers provide mothers with informal emotional and practical supports in an effort to strengthen the mother’s ability to parent effectively. Whether advocating on behalf of a mother as she navigates the complex and sometimes confusing world of community resources or spending a few hours listening and lending a shoulder to lean on, our mentors help mothers work through their challenges and face the every-day tasks that all families must deal with to survive and thrive.

In 2011, the Mentoring Moms program initiated 27 new matches and sup-ported 53 ongoing matches between mentors and mothers. In addition to supervising matches, the Mentoring Moms staff organized a number of activities to supplement the mentoring relationship:

• Mentor Refreshers, meetings for mentors to share challenges and successes;

• Special events, such as Family Holiday Breakfast, Mom’s One Day Shop with gently used clothing and household donations, Family Makeover Event at Parisian Beauty Academy, Mentors and Moth-ers Celebration Brunch, Mentor/Family Picnic, FREE Big Book Giveaway, Financial Literacy workshop and an evening with Re-flections, an improvisational theatre program for teens and adults.

• Back to School evening for parents and children in both Mentoring Moms and Mentoring Youth. Parents were given the opportunity to attend a variety of workshops including, “Preparing Students for College,” “Parents Rights in Special Education,” and “Tips to Help Children Succeed in School” and new backpacks and school supplies were distributed to all families.

Each of these activities is possible through the generous support of spon-sors and volunteers from corporations, civic and religious groups, and student organizations. Their efforts help the mothers we mentor become more successful moms.

High Marks for Mentoring Moms

Every year we evaluate our programs. The July 2011 evaluation showed that over 90% of the mothers surveyed felt their mentors had made a difference in their lives and noted an improvement coping with challenges and managing stress. In addition, over 80% of the mothers noted an improvement in managing the healthcare and educational needs of their children. Below are some comments by moth-ers being mentored:

My mentor has helped so much in my life and has been that person I can trust and seek advice. Thank you so much, I have noticed many improvements in my life with her around. I don’t know where I would be with out her!

I don’t know what I would do without my men-tor’s gentle pushing and friendship. I can’t describe how much she has helped.

My mentor is a godsend to me. I don’t know what I would do without her.

I want to say thank you for giving me the men-tor you picked out for me. My mentor is a wonderful person and she is an inspiration and good role model.

My mentor is a wonderful person and helps me with a lot of things. She is like a second mom. I share all of my feelings with her.

I am glad I have my mentor in my life!

The Volunteer Center is widely recognized for the excellence of its mentoring programs, Volunteers in these programs are committed, caring men and women who become inte-gral to the lives of the people they mentor. In addition to being encouraging friends and role models, mentors often are advocates, acting as liaisons between the families and the school; helping families obtain food, housing, jobs/career training and health insur-ance; and, most importantly, helping the people they are mentoring recognize their po-tential, access resources and build upon their own strengths to see and achieve a brighter future.

Our mentoring programs are valued partners with many agencies in Bergen County, providing services and resources that simply are not available anywhere else. One reason for our success is the care and diligence we invest in training mentors. Each mentor must complete a 15-hour training course specific to the program they choose to enter; each must also successfully pass rigorous screening procedures, including fingerprint and background checks, written references and personal interviews.

Our mentoring program staff leaders are frequent participants on panels, presenters at seminars, and consultants to other agencies regarding mentor recruitment, training, screening and supervision. They are recognized not only for their commit-ment but also for their success in connecting children, teens and adults with caring volunteer mentors.

Page 11: Annual Report 2011-Complete

Page 9

Mentoring Youth Founded in 1977, the Mentoring Youth program has screened, trained and man-aged well over 3,200 volunteer mentors. The program has facilitated a high rate of successful mentoring matches between caring adult volunteers and a diverse group of children with social, emotional and behavioral challenges throughout Bergen County. MENTORING YOUTH volunteers:

• Provide friendship, support, and guidance in one-on-one mentoring relationships

• Share weekly educational, recreational and social experiences with the child s/he is mentoring

• Reinforce positive behavior and provide guidance for achieving educational and personal goals

• Help children identify and build upon their own strengths and assets, thus promoting personal growth and enhancing self esteem

• Help children see and achieve a brighter future through unconditional support, friendship and guidance

In 2011, Mentoring Youth restructured to focus its resources on children and youth it is best able to serve, thereby reducing the numbers of children on the waiting list from 60 to 22. The program initiated 40 new matches and managed an average of 78 mentoring matches throughout the year.

In addition to supervising mentoring relationships, staff orga-nized numerous activities designed to enhance the mentoring relationship: a mentor recognition breakfast during National Mentoring Month in January; a picnic hosted by the Allendale Middle School 8th grade in June; Bronx Zoo trip in October; and annual Halloween and Holiday parties. Eight families from the Mentoring Youth program were adopted for the holi-days (three through the Volunteer Center’s All Wrapped Up program and five through Giants of Generosity), ensuring a wonderful supply of toys and other needed items. The pro-gram also hosted quarterly Refreshers to support, encourage and advise mentors on issues related to their matches with children/youth.

Mentoring Youth benefited from the generous support of many corporations and organizations throughout 2011. Individuals and corporations supported the Bronx Zoo trip. The Saddle Brook VFW, Inserra Supermarkets, Benjamin Moore and Hunter Douglas made significant contributions to the Hallow-een and Holiday parties. The NY Red Bulls and other groups provided free or reduced-cost admission to programs enjoyed by kids and mentors, and numerous individuals and compa-nies donated services and gifts. Students from Business Lead-ers of Tomorrow—a Fairleigh Dickinson University organiza-tion—provided exuberant help at the Halloween and Holiday Parties. The quality and quantity of these resources are indic-ative of tremendous community support for children in our community. We are continually grateful for the demonstrations of care and concern for the health, happiness, and well-being of the youth we serve.

Mentoring Youth Success At age 84, Sarah is the most senior volunteer in the Mentoring Youth program. However, if you didn’t know that, it would be hard to tell.

She’s mentoring two nine-year-old girls (Samantha and Kirsten) and consistently meets with each every week, ensuring that each girl’s needs are met. She also ar-ranges for the three of them to spend time together at least twice each month, and this has led to a wonderful friendship between the two girls.

Both girls have difficult family lives, and Sarah helps them cope with issues at home and at school. For Kirsten, reading is a challenge, so Sarah reviews Kirst-en’s homework with her whenever possible and provides books and other review materials to study when they are together. For Samantha, the challenge is a parent with mental health issues. She longs to be more helpful around the house to make life easier for her mom, so Sarah is teaching her to cook and bake. When Saman-tha wanted to learn how to play Happy Birthday for her mother on her school-issued recorder, Sarah took her to a 90-year-old friend (and former music teacher) for les-sons.

Both girls speak with such enthusiasm about the won-derful explorations and lessons with their friend and mentor, Sarah.

What’s a 75-year age difference between friends!

Trained and caring mentors help their mentees see and take steps toward a bright-er future. Mentoring Moms help over-whelmed mothers; Mentoring Youth volun-teers help kids who have experi4enced abuse, neglect or isolation.

The Chore Service is comprised of 40 dedicated senior volunteers and three paid drivers who provide minor home repairs that keep the elderly and people with disabilities safe in their own homes. Chore performs the minor but essential repairs that our clients can neither do them-selves nor get anyone else to do for them. For many, Chore can mean the difference between independence and institutionalization.

In 2011, Chore volunteers provided 8,383 hours of service, made 1,715 service calls for 1,846 senior or disabled clients, and completed 4,180

household repairs. Chore has three vans with 15 crews that are on the road every workday throughout the year. With the population of frail and elderly persons increasing, the need for safety modifications in the home—grab bars, hand rails, proper lighting—has increased. Several volunteers work two or more shifts a week to make sure our clients are safe. Chore volunteers are often the only visitors a client may have for a long peri-od of time, and their kindness and generosity are inspiring.

Chore does not require income eligibility and there is no charge for the service, except for materials necessary to complete the repairs. In addition to home repairs, Chore collaborates with other agencies serving the homebound by providing outreach and referrals for those in need of other services. Chore receives funding from the B.C. Div. of Senior Services, B.C. Community Development, Community Chest of Eng-lewood, and private contributions.

Sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service, RSVP helps people age 55+ respond to important needs in our community. RSVP works diligently to put the time, talents, knowledge and life experience of older adults to work at a broad range of qualified “volunteer stations” throughout Bergen County. In addition to the reward of help-ing other people and many causes, volunteers earn public recognition at a variety of events throughout the year as part of a large, national movement. Every volunteer is also enti-

tled to supplemental accident and medical insurance while volun-teering.

During 2011, RSVP engaged 275 seniors in volunteer service at 48 nonprofit organizations and schools. RSVP’s reputation in Bergen County is unparalleled due to the numbers and quality of volunteering that takes place at such high-impact organiza-tions as Center for Food Action and Meals on Wheels. RSVP also collaborates annually with AARP to help sen-iors and people with disabilities file their income tax re-turns.

RSVP volunteers realize a tremendous sense of value and gratification in using their skills and valuable time to meet the real needs in our community. Through RSVP, active and engaged volunteers have the opportunity to turn a lifetime of experience into the experience of a lifetime!

RSVP/CASA Volunteers RSVP is pleased to count CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) as one of the agencies where seniors are ac-tively involved. CASA is a network of 955 programs across the country that recruit, train and support volunteers to repre-sent the best interests of abused and neglected children in the courtroom and other settings. Volunteers stay with each case until the child is placed in a safe, permanent home. For many children, their CASA volunteer is the one constant adult in their lives. RSVP volunteers Phil and Betty Lurie, of Paramus, are CASA volunteers and have assisted five fami-lies and 18 children.

Each child represented through CASA is in unique, difficult and usually complex circumstances. Phil says that volun-teering with CASA "has its ups and downs, pain and pleas-ures, but it is wonderful and satisfying when you see the im-pact that volunteers can have on children’s lives."

Love Letters from Chore Clients

As the volunteers moved about, they completed not only the jobs I had asked for, but other needed work they noticed. All gentlemen were pleasant, capable and eager to give. Chore Service has a well-deserved reputation.

Chore’s office staff is patient, kind and efficient. They sent us three very nice volunteers who installed grab bars in the bathroom. I am very relieved to take my shower in safety.

I can’t thank you enough. I’m on a fixed income, so the repairs they made to my faucet and toilet saved me a lot of money. I am very grateful.

In 2011, the Volunteer Center’s Non-Profit Training and Resource Center continued to provide a roster of trainings primarily to benefit nonprofit organizations in our commu-nity. Part of the Volunteer Center’s mission is to strength-en the capacity of non-profit organizations, and one of the most effective ways to do that is through timely, relevant training programs.

Our Non-Profit Training Program offered 15 classes that were presented to 239 participants, including board mem-bers, executive directors, staff members and volunteers. Topics ranged from volunteer program management to fundraising to leadership development. Two of the cours-es were offered under the Neighbor Academy program, a series of free, introductory courses specifically geared toward small and start-up non-profits and other communi-ty groups.

In 2011, on-site trainings were provided to 211 partici-pants from non-profit organizations and other community groups in the subjects of board roles and responsibilities, volunteer management, and corporate volunteering.

The Volunteer Center of Bergen County was founded in 1966 by the Junior League of Bergen County and a group of con-cerned residents who saw the need for a clearinghouse matching prospective volunteers with agencies that needed their help. This continues as a key service and is the primary concern of our Community Volunteer Services department. In 1972, the Center began sponsorship of the Retired & Sen-ior Volunteer Program (RSVP), which became an independ-ent agency for 20-plus years but returned to sponsorship by the Volunteer Center in 2002. In 1977, the Chore Service was initiated with senior volunteer handymen/women provid-ing minor household repairs for the elderly and/or disabled. The next year, in collaboration with the Division of Youth and Family Services, we took over management of Volunteers in Protective Services (VIPS), a program in which trained and caring adults provide guidance to children who have suffered abuse, neglect or extreme isolation. The program’s name was changed to Mentoring Youth in 2010. Both Chore and Men-toring Youth have provided service continually and are going strong today. In the late 1970s, again in collaboration with the Junior League, we established DOVIA (Directors of Volunteers in Agencies), an educational and networking organization for volunteer directors. This group became DOVIA of Bergen and Passaic Counties in 1996. In 1996 we launched the Bergen Bike Tour, which is orga-nized by CPAs, banking and corporate leaders with proceeds shared between the Volunteer Center and Tomorrows Chil-dren's Fund at Hackensack University Medical Center. In 1997 we instituted a formal partnership agreement with Bergen County's United Way, in which our two organizations collaborate closely to provide volunteer services to the gen-eral community and to businesses of all sizes. In 1998 we began joint sponsorship of the Bergen County Golf Classic. Volunteers from the Workplace was established in 1981 when executives from several companies requested assistance in involving their employees in service activities. Corporate vol-unteering has been a key activity of the VCBC since then. In 2000, in partnership with several companies and Bergen County’s United Way, we launched the Northern New Jersey Business Volunteer Council, with a strategic focus on mobi-lizing companies and their employees to meet the needs of children and families. The BVC currently has 30 dues-paying member companies. The BVC and other corporate communi-ty involvement efforts are managed by the Volunteer Center’s Business Volunteer Services department. In 1987, Volunteer Ventures was formed to develop evening and weekend group volunteer projects targeted to busy adults with limited time availability. Volunteer Ventures was phased

out as an ongoing program in 2009. However, we continue to refer volunteers seeking involvement in short-term episodic volunteer projects to activities at partner agencies across the community. In 1994 we became custodian of funds for the Bergen Coun-ty Summer Campership Fund, a public-private venture in which children of low-income working families are given the opportunity to attend summer day camp. The Parent Aides for Teens mentoring program was initiated in 1995 to help teen mothers become responsible parents; it was terminated in 2006 due to lack of sustainable funding. Mentoring Moms was established in 1995 to provide peer mentors for overwhelmed mothers in need of guidance in par-enting and life skills. In 1999, we began annual publication of our extensive data-base of volunteer opportunities in the Guide to Volunteering, well-received and distributed throughout our community. In 2000, our searchable database of volunteer opportunities was posted on our website: www.bergenvolunteers.org. In the wake of Tropical Storm Floyd in 1999, we formed the Bergen County VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) which assists the B.C. Office of Emergency Man-agement, American Red Cross and other first responders in preparing for and responding to disasters. Our leadership of the VOAD has proved effective in mobilizing volunteers and agencies in response to subsequent events: the terror attacks of September 11, 2007 floods; violent storms in 2010; and Hurricane Irene in September, 2011. We are also involved in regional and national disaster response planning. In late 2003, we suspended sponsorship of DOVIA in order to focus on providing training to build capacity of nonprofit agen-cies to better fulfill their missions, including effective engage-ment of volunteers. Our Nonprofit Training and Resource Center provides an outstanding curriculum in volunteer pro-gram management, Board development and other topics rele-vant to nonprofit management; our "Neighbor Academy" is offered free of charge and targeted to grassroots, community and faith organizations of limited means. In 2007 we began development of Bergen LEADS, a civic leadership program designed to give the next generation of leaders insight into the challenges and opportunities facing Bergen County. The program was launched in September, 2008, and the first class of carefully selected, exceptional pro-spective leaders was graduated in June 2009. The Volunteer Center of Bergen County is an affiliate member of the Points of Light Institute & HandsOn Network, whose mission is to inspire, mobilize and equip people to take action that can change the world.

(current programs are highlighted in bold type)

The mission of the Volunteer Center of Bergen County is to strengthen the community by connecting people with opportunities to serve, operating direct service volunteer programs, building capacity for effective volunteering,

and participating in strategic partnerships that meet community needs.

New Chore Wagon Thanks to generous donations from several Rotary Clubs, Rotary District 7490, Columbia Bank, Oritani Bank, and Eisai — and with the help of dedicated Rotar-ian Phil Ball — a new van, complete with shelving and tools, was added to the fleet of our Chore Service (page 10), replacing a well-worn and repair-prone 14-year-old van. Now, with three new vans on the road every workday, we have been able to decrease our wait time for service appointments, and we are keep-ing our volunteers safe as well. Bergen County homeowners age 60 and over, or who are permanently disabled, can make an appointment for Chore Service by calling 201-489-7790.

Several friends of Phil Ball provided gifts in honor of his second Bar Mitzvah. Phil asked that gifts be earmarked for a

new van for our Chore Service (see page 10)

BVC Fun & Games The Northern New Jersey Business Volunteer Council, sponsored by the Volunteer Cen-ter, planned to host its annual Night@Races in the fall, but the racetrack closed! So we improvised and had a wonderfully fun party at IKEA, with comedian Mark Malkoff as em-cee. More than 200 guests enjoyed great food (including IKEAs famous swedish meat-balls), libations, silent auction and, of course, fun and games! Proceeds supported the BVC's activities on behalf of children and families.

All Wrapped Up Holiday Giving Program

Our All Wrapped Up holiday giving program links individuals and families in need with gener-

ous donors in the community during the holiday season. We received requests for assistance from 42 nonprofit agen-cies, which submitted wish lists on behalf of 891 individuals (mostly seniors and people with disabilities) and 854 families comprising 2,917 family members.

Despite the lingering recession, 715 volunteer donors stepped up to fulfill requests for holiday support. The result was that all of those for whom requests were received were “adopted” by generous donors and/or received gift cards for area supermarkets and discount stores. Altogether, the val-ue of donated gifts, cash and gift cards totaled well over $300,000. Thanks to ALL!

Summer Campership Fund The Volunteer Center is custodian of funds for the Summer Campership Fund, a unique public-private collaboration that sends children of low income working parents to summer day camp. The Bergen County Office for Children reviews applications submitted by families and selects participants. A dedicated group of

volunteers solicits contributions, and the Volunteer Center tracks donations and sends scholarships to day camps. In 2011, 74 donors contributed $23,865, enabling 21 children to enjoy the healthful benefits of summer day camp. Without this fund, many working families would have no recourse but to leave children home alone and unsupervised. Since its inception in 1994, the Bergen County Summer Campership Fund has raised $615,000 and provided summer daycamp for 908 children.
