1 ANNUAL REPORT 2013 2014 Institutional Milestones: St. Joseph’s College for women (Autonomous) went through third cycle of assessment and accreditation and is reaccredited with A Grade and thus SJCW (A) is the only women’s college in North Coastal Andhra with an A Grade. New PG Programme, MSc. Home Science is being initiated from the academic year 2014- 15. SJCW(A) is in the process of setting up a Community College (with courses in DTP, Health Assistance and Fashion Designing) for Intermediate failures and drop outs. It is also likely to start new UG programs in Vocational, BPO and Fashion Designing. The college conducted one National Conference on ‘Green Technologies’ in the month of November. The newly constructed Basket Ball Court and Media Lab have also been inaugurated in the same month. The college is now SAP Partner Institute. 5 faculty members were awarded PhD and 5 faculty members received MPhil in 2013-14. One major research project with DST funding and three minor research projects with UGC funding have been sanctioned in this year. ANNUAL REPORT 2013 – 2014

Institutional Milestones:

St. Joseph’s College for women (Autonomous) went through third cycle of assessment and

accreditation and is reaccredited with A Grade and thus SJCW (A) is the only women’s

college in North Coastal Andhra with an A Grade.

New PG Programme, MSc. Home Science is being initiated from the academic year 2014-

15.

SJCW(A) is in the process of setting up a Community College (with courses in DTP, Health

Assistance and Fashion Designing) for Intermediate failures and drop outs. It is also likely to

start new UG programs in Vocational, BPO and Fashion Designing.

The college conducted one National Conference on ‘Green Technologies’ in the month of

November. The newly constructed Basket Ball Court and Media Lab have also been

inaugurated in the same month.

The college is now SAP Partner Institute.

5 faculty members were awarded PhD and 5 faculty members received MPhil in 2013-14.

One major research project with DST funding and three minor research projects with UGC

funding have been sanctioned in this year.

SJCW (A) received ‘Best Institution Award in NCC’ for the year 2013-14, from 13(A) BN

Unit of NCC. During Independence Day celebrations at AU, the college contingent received

‘The Best NCC Contingent Award’ from AU Vice Chancellor.

Nearly 400 Govt. School Children (of 2 schools) were benefited by the Science Education

Programme CASE and 220 students of Sacred Heart Aided Govt. High School were inspired

by the Vedic Maths training initiative, MATHEMATRICS.

Academic Innovations

New Core Paper ‘Creative Crafts’ has been introduced by the Home Sc. Dept. in the II Sem.

from AA Batch.

Five Interdisciplinary Career Electives- Career & Employment Training (Office Management

Dept.), Basic Research Methodology (Bot., Chem., H.Sc. Dept.s), Executive Secretarial

Practice (Office Management Dept.), Advanced Creative Crafts (Home Science Dept.) and

Electronic Commerce (Dept. of Commerce) have been introduced in the V Sem.

Two new UGC Add- On Courses, 1. Certificate Course in Baking & Confectionery and 2.

Certificate Course in French have been initiated.Obligatory General Education paper Human

Ecology is introduced in place of obligatory General Education paper Environmental Studies

and General Elective paper Human Rights.

In place of Gender Development, Gender Studies is introduced and Chemistry for Daily

Living is replaced by Chemistry for Everyone as General Electives. Basic Mathematics is

renamed as Functional Mathematics. Science Technology And Development (STAD) is

restructured as a one semester (VI Sem.) Paper.

Faculty Enrichment Programs

Faculty Forum: The first meeting of members of Faculty Forum (for the academic year

2013-14) was held on 27.06.2013. In view of the impending NAAC peer team visit it has

been decided to focus on departmental preparatory work as a matter of priority. The first

session of faculty forum took place on 06.02.2014. Dr. Y. Fatima Rani, Librarian, spoke on

her research topic, ‘User Awareness and Access to Library Resources on Internet in Degree

College (Autonomous) Libraries in Andhra Pradesh(India): A Survey’. Dr. Fatima explained

how she identified the topic and also the methodology adopted by her. She then presented the

findings of her study. Her inspiring talk was followed by an interactive session. Queries on

sample size, data collection, F test and T test etc. were clarified. All the senior and junior

faculty members participated in the session. The second session of faculty forum was

conducted on 06.03.2014. Dr. G. Rama Lakshmi, HOD of Pol. Sc., presented her research to

the faculty forum. She spoke on ‘Women Leadership in Indian Political Process- A Case

Study of Visakhapatnam District Constituencies, Andhra Pradesh in General Elections 2009’.

The comparative study of various issues related to women in pre & post Independence

periods was brought out lucidly and was appreciated by everyone.

Induction Program was conducted for Fresh Faculty immediately after reopening to

familiarize them with autonomy, work culture at SJCW and professional ethics. The other

faculty enrichment programmes include

• One Day Workshop on ‘Personal Transformation and Value Development’ for all the

Dec.(during MSE for PG students) to empower them in English language usage and to

Dept. & Sr. Domonic, lecturer in PG Eng. Dept., were the Res. Persons, Nov.2013.

• A series of workshops on ‘Effective Oral and Power Point Presentation of Personal

and Departmental Profiles’ were conducted for all the faculty members in the month

Other Student Enrichment Programmes:

Induction program for IYr (Int., Deg., PG) students for an overview of the college, course and

the model code of conduct.

One month bridge course in functional grammar, one week bridge/orientation course in all

the other theory papers for all the IYr. Degree students. For new papers (not studied at +2

level) external experts acted as resource persons. All science students had bridge/orientation

course in practical papers also.

PG Chemistry students participated in the first Annual International Conference (AIC-1) &

Industry-CCRS Congress 2013 at Sankethika Vidya Parishad Engineering College, Vizag on

July 13th &14th 2013.

TIME Institute & Conduira Education & Training Services have separately organized

awareness drives to IIIYr. Students on higher education opportunities, competitive exams,

proficiency tests etc. in the months of July and August.

IIIYr. Home Science students were trained by Pidilite Industries on ‘Techniques in Painting’

during a three day workshop organized by Home Sc. Dept. in the month of August , 2013.

An MOU was signed with CII – YI on Aug 7 and the ‘Student Net’ unit of Young Indians

Network was launched in the college. Ms. Reshma Jain IIIBA, EPJ, was nominated as

Student Chair and Ms. Pranathi G as Co-Chair. Dr. Y. Lakshmi Prabha is the Staff Mentor for

the college chapter.

An awareness session on ‘Library Services’ was conducted for IYr. PG students where in an

orientation talk on the available library and other information resources at SJCW(A) was

followed by a library detour. All the PG students were informed of their respective N List ID

and the various books, journals etc. that could be accessed on line with that ID. Sept. 2013.

One day workshop on ‘Careers in Interior Design’ was organized for H. Sc. Students by the

H. Sc. Dept. in Nov.2013. Mr. S. L. N. Murthy, an Architect, spoke on ‘Recent Trends in

Interior Design’ and Dr. Sr. N.D. Veronica, spoke on ‘Relevance & Importance of Design’.

Mr. Srinivasa Murthy, Trainer from DATA PRO, trained the students in AUTOCAAD, 2D &

3D MAX.

A three day workshop on ‘Computer and Soft Skills’ was organized for all the PG students

to make the students more articulate in computer usage and communicative in English. Mrs.

Janaki Mohapata, HOD of C.Sc. Dept. and Dr. Nalini Dutta, HOD of PG Eng. Dept. were the

resource persons. Nov4th-6th.

The Rotary Club of Visakhapatnam RI3020 launched the Rotaract Club of St. Joseph’s in

Nov. 2013. Priyadarshini Sen Gupta, IM.Sc. was nominated as the first President and

Shravya, IIBA, EPJ as Secretary.

Students of PG Maths attended the 2 Week Winter School on ‘Measure Theory and

Functional Analysis’ organized by Dept. of Maths, AU in collaboration with Institute of

Mathematical Science, Chennai. From Nov.25th to Dec.6th2013.

One Day Media workshop was organized in Dec. 2013 for IIIYr. Journalism students by the

JMC. Dept.in collaboration with NSHM & I LEAD (Mass Comm. & Hotel Mngmt. Institute

from Kolkata). The workshop helped in training the students in journalistic writing,

photography, radio anchoring & graphic designing. Prof. Mrityunjoy Chatterjee, Director, I

LEAD, Mr. Jaideep Deo Bhang, Sr. Sub Editor, The Hindu, Mr. Tapas, Graphic Designer, I

LEAD and Veeru Mama, RJ, were the resource persons.

An Interactive Session was organized in Jan.2014 for the PG students with the outstanding

student achievers of the college. Participants had a fruitful interaction with the young

achievers in which the latter inspired the former by sharing the secrets of their success.

Ms. Akshaya Kannan, a Fullbright Nehru Fellow working at Avinashalingam University

shared her views on research and enlightened the final year degree students on available

research avenues and fellowships. Participants had a fruitful interaction with her after the

discourse. Jan.2014.

IIIYr. BA & BSc. Students volunteered for one week at the Silk Expo organized by Silk

Mark Board of AP State Government and gained real life experience in marketing and

customer care in Jan 2014. They were also paid nominal remuneration for their good work.

IIIYr. B.Sc. BBC students attended a two day workshop on ‘Emerging Techniques in

Biochemistry and Bioinformatics’ on 3rd & 4th Jan 2014. at GITAM University, Vizag. They

also participated in the training programme in practical techniques and gained hands on

experience in using certain advanced instruments.

PG English students participated in a two day workshop on ‘Career Counseling and

Guidance’ on Feb 21&22,2014. Dr. N. R. Jeevan Babu was the resource person.

Dr. K. Devendra Vijay, HOD of Chem., delivered a talk ‘Higher Education and Research

Avenues after UG’ to the IIIYr. Degree students at the exit level get together in March.2014.

Slow learners and under performers are supported through a structured Remedial Coaching

Programme coordinated by the Examination Dept..

‘The Spectrum’ magazine was published by the JMC Dept.. It is a complete student venture

in which students actively participated in writing, editing, sketching, designing, advertising

Entire college fraternity celebrated Independence Day, Republic Day, International Women’s

Day and Teachers’ Day in a fitting manner. World Environment Day, World Population Day,

International Literacy Day and World AIDS Day was observed by NCC, NSS and several

other Depts..

College Inaugural Function was conducted on 7th Sept., 2013. Mr. Guruswamy, IRS,

Commissioner of Income Tax(Appeals) was the Chief Guest. Student Council for the year

2013-14 was nominated. Ms. Salma Ahmad, IIIBSc.MPC is the President, Prerana Yadav is

the Secretary. Capt. K. Sujatha received ‘Sr. St. Andre Best Teacher Award’, for her

outstanding achievements.

Two day UGC sponsored National Conference on ‘Green Technologies’ was organized in the

college on Nov7th &8th. Dr. K. Radhakrishna, HOD of Physics Dept. was the convenor of the

conference. AU Vice Chancellor GSN Raju was the Chief Guest at the Inaugural. Mr. DN

Rao was the Guest of Honour. Eminent scientists and Industrial Experts addressed the 7

technical sessions that followed.

NAAC peer team visit took place from Dec.9th to13th. A one hour cultural show was put up

on the evening of 9th. Sannidha of IBSc HSc. gave a splendid classical dance performance on

the occasion.

College Valedictory Function was conducted on 15th Feb., 2014. Mr. Solomon Arokia Raj,

IAS, Dist. Collector, Visakhapatnam, was the Chief Guest. Five PhD & Eight MPhil

awardees were falicitated on the occasion. Instituted and Proficiency prizes were given to the

deserving students. Other outstanding achievers were also rewarded.

Outreach Initiatives: PG Chemistry- The Science Education Programme, CASE, in which nearly 400 students of

two nearby Govt. Schools participated .

UG Maths- The Vedic maths training programme, Mathematrics, in which nearly 220

students of a nearby Govt. School participated.

SJC Rotaracts (15) lead a contigent of 200 girl students of Sacred Heart High School to Shri

Shanthi Farm, Bhogapuram, for a training on Personality Development and Leadership

conducted by Rotary Club.

Collected money for Uttarakhand Disaster victims and donated to them.

Students of Journalism Department served as volunteers at MAD (Make A Difference), an

NGO working for Street Children.

Members of Science Club planted and nurtured Neem saplings around Chemistry laboratory.

Home Science faculty demonstrated the low cost recipes to the members of World Vision on

two different occasions.

Best Out of Waste is an outreach initiative of BA students. Students made artistic pieces and

useful articles out of waste generated in their homes and sold them in the college. The money

was used to buy clothes and bed sheets which were distributed to slum dwellers in

Gnanapuram.

Students of Home Sc. Dept. exhibited and sold greeting cards and innovative gift articles

prepared by them.

Associations and Clubs:

ANALYTICAL SCIENCE ASSOCIATION (ASA): EXECUTIVE MEMBERS of the

association for the year 2013-2014 include 1. President - Andleeb Iram (III BSc. MPC) 2.

Vice President - Anusha Chivuluru (III BSc. MPCS.) 3. Scretary - Rosina Nisha(II BSc.

MPCS.) and five members from MPC & MPCS.

ASA comprising students and faculty from the departments of Mathematics, Physics,

Chemistry and Computer Science has started its activities for the year 2013-14 with the

Bohr's theory write-up competition commemorating the centenary of Bohr's theory. It was

conducted for Intermediate students by the department of Chemistry. I Inter and II Inter

students took part in the competition and presented many views of Bohr's model of atom in

which a number of innovative additions to the theory were also made.

Department of physics conducted ‘Identify the Scientist’ competition in which students

participated with enthusiasm and excitement. The month of September started with the

plantation of Neem saplings by our seniors in the college premises.

On 22 December 2013 the department of Mathematics conducted Maths Quiz competition on

the occasion of Sri Ramanujam's Birthday. Teams of 4 members were formed with a

representative from all the 3 years students and the team members worked with synergy and

made a spirited effort to win. The year 2014 started with the Puzzle competitions on 'Defence

Search' conducted by the Department of Physics on 9th January 2014. About 62 students

participated in the competition.

The department of computer science conducted a General Quiz on 25th January 2014. On

28th Jan 2014, Rubik Cube competition was held for the lecturers of the college, courtesy

Chemistry department. This was followed by the Sudoku competition for the students on 3rd

Feb. 2014. Department of Mathematics conducted a general quiz competition on 11 Feb

2014. 12 teams took part in it.

25 Febuary. 2014: ASA day was celebrated. The function started at 2:00pm. Mrs.A. Sita

Devi, former HOD of Botany, was the chief guest. Most of the staff members attended the

function. The programme started with the formal event in which Mrs P.krishna kumari

felicitated our chief guest with bouquet, shawl and memento. Winners of various

competitions conducted by ASA were given away prizes. In the second part, cultural

programme by I and II year students was presented. All the seniors thoroughly enjoyed the

programme.

26 February 2014: All the III year MPC and MPCS students went on an industrial tour

through ASA. They were taken to NSTL. They were told about mines and torpedoes. They

were taken to the towing tank and the cavitation tunnel and Enviroment Test Center(ETC).

28 Febuary 2014: All the III year students went to Visakhapatnam Steel Plant for an

industrial visit. They were shown the blast furnace, coke oven batteries and SMS. They were

also explained about all the metallurgical processes taking place there. Students also visited

the sewage treatment plant and learnt about waste water recycling.

ACTIVITIES OF THE HERITAGE CLUB –

Dept. of History and Political Science

Inspite of Samaikyandhra Agitation, Heritage Club was able to organize activities

mentioned in the action plan- (Display, Release of Magazine, Celebration of Important Days

& Seminars). The Display on the notice board under the name ‘Heritage’ on important topics

like Kedarnath Yesterday- Today, Buddhist Heritage Places, Swami Vivekananda attracted the

attention of the viewers.

‘Harshitha’ (the magazine for Telugu Medium students of Inter & BA), after a gap of 2 years,

was released. Swami Vivekananda’s 150th Birth Anniversary was celebrated by the Heritage

Club. Inter and Degree students prepared Seminars on Swamiji’s message and also drew

posters on Swamiji. Hiroshima Day on 6th August was commemorated by organizing a Guest

Lecture on ‘Dangers of Atomic Explosion’ by Prof. K. Ravi, Andhra University and a Display

on the effects of atomic explosion by Sri. Narava Prakasa Rao of IARF. Gandhiji, the Father

of the Nation was remembered on his Jayanthi(2nd October) and Vardhanthi (30th January).

Students spoke on the relevance of Gandhi and presented their views in write ups on the

greatness of Gandhi. The students of III BA visited Silk Mark Expo in Swarna Bharathi Indoor

Stadium to observe the various silks in India.

BA FUSION BASE

BA Fusion Base has been very active in this academic year. The council

members were very enthusiastic and pro-active in carrying out their duties and conducting

various activities. These various activities brought out students’ creative potential and

diverse talents. The activities which were conducted in G4 during the lunch time include:

✓ Stachestra: The activity was held on 16th July 2013 in which the

students had to sing a song using the instruments which were found in their

bagpacks. The students who participated were from all the three years. A total

number of 43 students participated out of which 4 groups won the prize.

✓ Flower Carpet Competition: This activity was held on 17th

September,2013 for students of all groups including Inter students. The theme for

this activity was ‘Unity and Harmony’. The students showed active participation

where 10 groups participated out of which 3 groups won the prize.

✓ Card Making: This activity was based on theme that was left to

participants’ choice. There were 17 students who participated out of which 4

students bagged the prize.

✓ Nail Art Competition: This activity was conducted on 25th

November, 2013. There were 11 students who gave their best participation out of

which 3 won the prize.

✓ Dhohas, Nitivakyalu, Proverbs in a minute: The activity was

conducted on 3rd and 12th December,2013. This activity was conducted in three

languages- Hindi, Telugu and English. The total participants were 24 out of which

3 prizes were won in English language, 2 prizes were won in Telugu and 2 prizes

in Hindi.

✓ Mehendi Competition: This activity was conducted on 18th

December, 2013. There were 9 participants who exhibited their beautiful talent and

3 unique ones won the prize.

✓ Best out of Waste: This was a very innovative activity where the

students who participated created beautiful and useful products out of waste

materials. There were 7 students who participated and 3 students won the prize.

✓ Patriotic Group Song: This activity was conducted on 27th

January,2014 on the occasion of Republic Day. All the three years degree students

participated in this activity. The participation of whole class from each year was

admirable. The total number of participants was 93. The second year students got

the first prize and the third year students got second prize.

✓ Hairstyling Competition : This activity was conducted on 24rth

January,2014 and 10 students participated in this competition. The hairstyles made

by the students were very beautiful and innovative.3 students won the prize.

✓ Lecturers Activity: The BA council came up with a very unique

activity where the lecturers were given chance to showcase their hidden talents.

The lecturers were filled with enthusiasm and pro-actively participated in the

activity. There were 11 lecturers who participated in this activity.

✓ Just a Minute: This activity was conducted on 4rth Februaru,2014.

The total number of students who participated were 29. The students were asked to

pick up a chit and perform as directed in the chit. It brought out the spontaneous

innovative thoughts and performance of the students. 3 out of 29 students won the

prize.

✓ Dance: In this activity, the individual as well as group performance

by the students was presented. Different dance forms like, ‘Anglo Chicks’,

‘Country dances’ etc were seen. There were total 8 dance forms out of which 3

dance forms won prize. This activity took place on 10th February, 2014.

✓ Drama: This activity was conducted on 12th February, 2014,

showcasing the varied and beautiful talents of the young students. The theme was

based on classic novels which were presented by clubbing with modern trends.

There were 5 groups from all the three years out of which 3 groups bagged the

prize.

✓ Make-up in pairs: The activity was on applying make-up to your

partner by being blind folded. It was conducted on 14th February,2014. In this

activity, lecturers also participated along with the students. There were a total of 12

pairs exhibiting their fashionista skills. 4 pairs got the prize.

SAHAY-ANNUAL REPORT

❖ One day workshop on ‘Cherishing Childhood through Counseling’ was organized and

conducted at Fort Catholic Girls High School on 20 August,2013.

There were 36 teachers who participated from St. Joseph’s High School, St. Aloysius School

and Fort Catholic Girls High School.

Resource Speakers: Dr. N.N. Raju, Dr. Suguna Kannan, Mrs. Shylaja Nair.

❖ Sahay opened a ‘FACEBOOK’ account on February 10, 2014.

Issues such as coping with negative thoughts, child abuse, self esteem, building up your

child’s library, how to deal with the lies your child tells, etc. are dealt with.

❖ ‘Enhancing Concentration and Memorizing Techniques’ was conducted on 18

February, 2014 for the students of Fort Catholic Girls High School. There were 60

students present.

The resource speaker : Sapna Kamal Bhulchandani, Mental Health Professional and

Psychology Lecturer, St. Joseph’s College for Women (A).

❖ SAHAY dealt with around 35 students/parents/family members from various schools

and colleges like Sacred Hearts, St. Aloysius School ,St. Joseph’s School and St.

Joseph’s College. The sessions revolved around issues like self esteem, shyness, abuse,

academic, behavior issues, concentration, negative image of self, negative thoughts,

career guidance, facing an interview, relationship issues and absenteeism.

❖ In the month of March, SAHAY purchased equipment for ART and PLAY therapy.

Kalamayi – SJCW Arts Club

Organised exhibition of sketches on ‘Facial Contours of Women and Girl Child’ by

Sruthi Patwari in the month of June. Staged a mammoth dance performed by 42 students as

part of Independence Day celebrations at AU. Roped in Mobster’s Crew (dance group) to train

15 students during one week workshop on Contemporary Forms of Dance in August.

Organised an exhibition of sketches of landscapes and people by Priyamvada Nayak(IBSc.) in

September. Organized cultural programme staged by students in honour of NAAC peer team

members. During the course of the year students staged six one act plays scripted and directed

by NR Jeevan Babu on various occasions inside and outside the college.

Shrishti – SJCW Literary Association

Organized essay writing competition on ‘Corruption in Sports’ and a workshop on short

story writing in July. Conducted Essay Writing Competition in collaboration with Forum of

Free Enterprise, Mumbai, on socio-economic issues in Novembr.

ACTIVITIES ORGANISED BY STUDENT COUNCIL

JUNE:

The Student Council collaborated with ‘Kalamayi’, SJC Art Club and organized a display of sketches of Facial Contours of Women & Girl Child by Shruti Patawari, student of II BA EPJ.

JULY:

The Student Council in collaboration with ‘Shrishti’ the SJC Literary Club organized:

• Essay Writing Competition Competition on the topic ‘Corruption in Sports’.

• Workshop on Short Story Writing

Students participated in the ‘Yamaha Female Riding Training Camp’ on the 24th of July

AUGUST:

On the 15th of August, the Student Council presented a mammoth dance in which 42 students performed at the Independence Day Celebrations at AU Engineering Grounds, Andhra University. The group was adjudged the ‘Best Performance in the Cultural Event’.

On the 20th of August, the Student Council along with the Mobster’s Crew conducted auditions for students for a 1 week Contemporary Dance workshop in which 15 students received training.

SEPTEMBER:

The Student Council & ‘Kalamayi’ jointly organised a display of ‘Sketches of Landscapes and Facial Expressions’ by Priyamwada Nayak, student of I B.Sc CBZ.

Inaugural Function for the Academic Year 2013-14 was held on the 7th of September in the College Campus. Mr. G. Guruswami, IRS, Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals), was the Chief Guest for the Event. In his address, Mr. Guruswami exhorted students to perform well in all areas of academic, cultural and social activities.

NOVEMBER:

The Student Council organized an Essay Writing Competition on behalf of Forum for Free enterprise, Mumbai on Socio-Economic issues

The Student Wing of Rotary Club, Vizag was formally installed. Around 85 students registered as members of the Rotaract Club.

NSS Unit of St. Joseph’s College organized a Blood Donation Camp, on the occasion of Blood Donor’s Day, in which 21 students donated blood. Elocution and Solo Dance and Group Dance Competitions were also organized. World Environment Day and International Drug Abuse day were observed

Department of History & Political Science, Bala Vikas Foundation, along with the International Association for Religious Freedom organized a talk on ‘Dangers of Atomic Bombs’ delivered by Prof. K. Ravi, Former HOD, Political Science, Andhra University in connection with the Hiroshima and Nagasaki Day on the 6th and 9th of August respectively.

SEPTEMBER:

Department of Hindi organized Poster making Competition on the theme ‘MAA TUJHE SALAAM’, a Poetry Writing Competition on the topic ‘Jeevan/Safar’ Solo Singing and Extempore Competitions as a part of Hindi Week Celebrations.

PARTICIPATION OF STUDENTS AT INTER-COLLEGIATE, DISTRICT, STATE AND NATIONAL EVENTS

JUNE:

2 NSS Volunteers-Abida Taskeen and Sonali Sahoo of II BA participated at the NSS Mega Camp organized at Bangalore University from the 29th of June to the 10th of July.

JULY:

Students participated in the 31st Fr. Ceyrac Memorial, National Level Essay Writing Competition conducted by All India Peace and Solidarity Organisation on ‘Creating Ecological Consciousness Towards Environmental Sustainability’.

15 Intermediate students participated in the Science Camp ‘INSPIRE’ organized from the 16 to the 19th of July by the Indian Maritime Central University, Vizag.

AUGUST:

5 Students-Reshma Jain, Joyana Ruth, Reshma Kumari, Divya and Prerna Yadav represented St. Joseph’s at the Intercollegiate Group Discussion organized by the Young India (YI) Group operating under the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) on the topic ‘Achieving Good Governance in India- A dream or Reality’. Prerna Yadav was selected to represent Vizag YI at the Group discussion at the South Zone summit of CII at Kochi. The summit was also attended by Reshma Jain and Dr. Saileela, HOD, Home Science. Prerna Yadav, at this event, qualified for the next round of the Group Discussion to be held in the National level CII Summit at Delhi.

OCTOBER:

Students participated in the National Level Essay Competition on ‘Global Network against Weapons and Nuclear Power’ conducted by All India Peace & Solidarity Organization in connection with the occasion of ‘Space for Peace Walk’.

Priyanka D. of I B.A. CEM qualified and participated in the final roundof the best 10 at the All India Essay Contest for the prestigious Damodarshree National Award for Academic Excellence at SS Khanna Degree College, Allahabad. Two others, Divya Pooja from III BA EPO and Hannah Irani from I BA EPO were shortlisted as ‘Good’ in the run upto the event which consisted of a 3000-word essay on ‘What I can do?’

Students participated in the event organized by the Visakha Women’s College and won prizes in Paper Presentation and Model Making.

NOVEMBER:

Students participated at the Youth Festival at the Constituency Level conducted by the Department of Youth Affairs, Government of Andhra Pradesh, held at Gowri Degree College and won prizes in Group Dance, Mimicry, Group Singing, Group Discussion, Painting and Fancy Dress Competitions.

Students also participated in ‘Mahasiswa’- the event at VUDA Gurujada Kalashetram.

DECEMBER:

Students participated in the Youth Festival organized by the Department of Youth Affairs, Government of Andhra Pradesh, at YMCA and the students of II B.Comm won the I prize in One Act Play at the Zonal Level and thus qualified for the State Level Competition at Hyderabad.

Students participated in ‘Aurora ‘13’, an Intercollegiate Fest organized by Aditya Degree College and won prizes in Powerpoint Presentation, Model Presentations and Elocution Competition.

Students participated in the Management Fest ‘ASPIRE’ organized at Alwardas College of Business and won prizes in the Mehendi, Painting, Solo Dance and Ad Making Competitions.

Students participated in ‘GITAM Excellence Meet- 2013’ and bagged prizes in Group Dance, Photography and Business Plan Presentation.

During the Christmas celebrations organized by VUDA on December 15th, St. Joseph’s students staged a play on ‘Nativity of Jesus Christ’

JANUARY:

40 Students participated in SAARANG-2014, the annual fest organized by IIT Madras every year. This is the biggest event in South India organized and managed by students with ISO Certification. In the Street Play Event, St. Joseph’s script ‘The Gaze’ was adjudged the ‘Best Script’

NCC ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR 2013-2014

NCC activities for the academic year 2013-14 began with Independence day celebrations at

St. Joseph’s College for women (A).

On 15th Aug’2013 , St. Joseph’s College for women (A) , Visakhapatnam participated in 66th

year of Independence Day celebrations with reverence and enthusiasm at Andhra University. On

this occasion students were pound to have in their Prof.D.S.N Raju, Vice Chancellor, Andhra

University, Visakhapatnam as the Chief Guest. He had the proud privilege of unfurling the National

Flag on behalf of Andhra University and addressed the gathering. 37 NCC cadets were participated

in the March-Past with the Parade Commander Senior Under Officer (S.U.O) K.Laasya , II Degree(EPJ)

and Platoon Commander, SUO P.Lakshmi Devi, II Inter(MEC). Right Marker was JUO K.Vineetha

Velangini( II Inter MPC) , Left Marker- JUO G.Mounika (II Inter MPC). Chief Guest Inspected the

Parade.

1st year Degree and Inter students of 62 no’s were enrolled as NCC cadets on

12-07-2013.

NCC Cadets of I, II and III year attended the classes (given under annexure-l) and the

following Annual Camps at Regional, State, National and All India Levels. Our cadets actively
