Dear Colleagues,
The faculty and administrators at the University of San Diego have made significant contributions to the expansion of the research enterprise, and to the advancement of the mission of the university over this past year. Submissions increased by 33%, and awards by 27%, with a total of $13.9 million awarded to USD from external funding organizations for fiscal year 2014-2015. The Office of Sponsored Programs has continued the strong collaboration with Foundation Relations and this year’s report highlights the combined efforts that impact faculty and student research across the university.
Extramural support for campus programs provides faculty with a chance to expand their scholarly pursuits and advance global knowledge. It allows students to collaborate with faculty on cutting-edge research projects, participate in peacemaking initiatives around the world, and to develop skills that prepare them to be leaders dedicated to ethical conduct and compassionate service. In fiscal year 2014-2015 we celebrated these efforts with USD’s inaugural Research Week, which was a resounding success. Over 1,200 faculty, students, staff, and guests turned out to learn about the important work taking place across campus, and to celebrate our collective accomplishments. USD Deans spoke at the kick-off luncheon, emphasizing the impact external funding has made on their units. Research Week at USD will become an annual event due to the positive response, so save the date for next year: April 11-15, 2016.
All in all, 2014-2015 was a banner year for research at USD. We thank all who worked with our offices, and encourage others to consider collaborating with the Office of Sponsored Programs and Foundation Relations to contribute to the ongoing development of an enriched research portfolio here at USD.

Vice President and Provost“Our Office of Undergraduate Research was started by a grant from the William M. Keck Foundation. University Galleries was supported initially by the Legler Benough Foundation, and more recently by Robert and Karen Hoehn. The Changemaker Hub received support from the Bill Hannon Foundation, and Community Service Learning has been supported by the Mulvaney Family. The Center for Catholic Thought and Culture was funded by a bequest from Frances Harpst.”
The following pages include quotes from the 2015 Research Week inaugural luncheon, where the Provost and Deans shared examples of how external funding has benefited their units.
“National Science Foundation funding allowed us to hire eight women in the STEM area. Facilities has received a $1.5 million grant from SDG&E to work on our sustainability efforts.”

Dean of the Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science
“Over the past decade the School of Nursing (SON) has received research grants, training grants, and capitation grants. The main sources for these were NIH, Foundation Grants, the State of California Song Brown grants, and San Diego Neighborhood Improvement grants. Foundation grants provided research, training, and capitation funds for USD’s newest building, the Beyster Institute for Nursing Research (BINR).”
“The SON has 30 full-time permanent faculty positions; 22 tenure/tenure-track and 10 clinical. These faculty are outstanding; five are Fellows in the American Academy of Nurses, and one is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Having Fellows in the American Academy of Nursing helps give impetus to research grant applications. In the past year, every SON faculty person, except for two, submitted research or training grant applications.”
“It is an honor to work with the SON faculty. They recognize that nursing research saves lives.”

Dean of the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies“We owe the existence of the first stand-alone School of Peace Studies to the philanthropy and the vision of Joan B. Kroc. When she had this vision, she insisted that we create a school that not only talks about peace, but also makes sustainable peace around the world.”
“Support from the Alliance for Peace Building has allowed us to map the field of peace building, which provides a stronger base for future international efforts.”
“The TransBorder Institute has received, over the years, substantive research support from foundations as well as private donors. This work is central to understanding and addressing cross border issues, such as immigration affairs, unaccompanied minors, freedom of speech, emerging forms of violence in Mexico, the drug trade, violence and disappearances. What could be more central to our lives today, and to the lives of people in communities all over the world, than peace and justice? That’s what we seek to answer.”

Dean of the School of Business Administration“We have the best job in the world. As faculty members, our job is to learn and to communicate what we learn. Learning and writing about what we learn, we call ‘research.’ Communicating what we learn to students, we call ‘teaching.’ It’s just hard to get a better job than that.”
“The Center for Peace and Commerce created a Social Innovation Challenge that is an entrepreneurship program aimed at the triple bottom line — people, planet and profit, the ‘3 P’s.’ In other words, students pursue projects that seek environmental advances (planet) and poverty alleviation (people), but do so in a way that the third P is not philanthropy, but profit — or economic sustainability.”

Dean of the Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering“Darlene Shiley gave us a founding gift to start an engineering school, and it has enabled wonderful things for us. Her gift has advanced the culture of research by providing facilities and capacity for us.”
“When looking at our research contributions, it’s not the dollar amount or the proposal, but the impact that is most important. I measure research by impact. That impact can come in a variety of ways. As an undergraduate school, a lot of that impact is measured in students. As I look at the awards, I see a strong connection with our students in every one.”
“We have a number of companies sponsoring student projects this year, including Cubic, SDG&E and General Atomics. These companies sponsored not only the projects, but took the projects to publication. They are now sponsoring a student team to travel back East to present that paper. Clarify, CareFusion, and ViaSat are all directly involved with students, and faculty mentor those students.”
