We are glad to look back at a successful exchange year 2014. We managed, once again, to place even more motivated foreign interns at Swiss companies than we did last year. As well the number of Swiss students which we could successfully send for an internship abroad is similar as in the previous year.

This is even more enjoyable considering that the exchange year 2014 proved to be a particularly turbulent year. At the international level, many innovations have been pushed forward and structures have been changed. The implementation of the new Intraweb (our essential exchange tool), for example, turned out to be more difficult than initially assumed. However, it is a pleasure to see the strong commitment to achieve our common goals.

At the National Office in Zurich, several personnel changes have occurred. Marianne Steinemann has handed over her position as Managing Director to Sabine Lenz in May. On behalf of the Board, I would like to take the opportunity to thank Marianne for her outstanding work. Victor Varga, Gaby Hilpertshauser and Barbara Lingel still belong to the staff of the National Office. We warmly welcome Barbara Widmer as a new member of our team.

The loyal support from our long lasting partners is essential for IAESTE Switzerland. For this reason, we would like to cordially thank them for the good cooperation and their commitment.

Special thanks belong also to the volunteers of our Local Committees. They always take care in such a wonderful way of the foreign interns coming to Switzerland. This spreads the IAESTE spirit to the rest of the world.

Swiss Outgoer Event 2014Early June IAESTE Switzerland had the pleasure to invite all outgoing

students, who already have been accepted for an internship abroad to

our annual Outgoer Event, which was held in the ETH Alumni Pavillon in

Zurich. Former Outgoers (alumni) and current members of our Local

Committees were invited as well to share their experience with the

«greenhorns».As for most of the present Outgoers this year’s IAESTE

internship will be their first work experience abroad, they were

very happy to receive some information about preparation for their

stay in a foreign country. Therefore, Victor Varga, our current Outgoing

Exchange Coordinator, started the event with a presentation covering some basic

information about how to plan their trip, the work & life in a foreign country and gave them some

“tips & tricks” for their stay abroad. Rui Xue, a Chinese intern at Novartis, and Yazan Al-Saif

from Jordan, who is employed at Alstom, told us about their own experiences and pointed out some

cultural differences between Switzerland and their home countries.

Afterwards, everyone enjoyed a delicious BBQ where the Outgoers of 2014 had the

opportunity to exchange some specific information within special

country groups. The event was a big success and

we hope that afterwards our Swiss Outgoers were

well equipped and prepared with a lot of helpful

information to enable them a great stay abroad!

This year’s IAESTE Annual Conference took place

in Quito. At an altitude of 2800m, 77 member

countries came together to celebrate the biggest

and most important conference of the year within

the IAESTE community. All participating countries

were excited to join the conference and having

a fruitful exchange of internship offers.

This year IAESTE Switzerland was able to

exchange 130 Swiss internship positions

with interesting offers abroad for Swiss

outgoing students. Moreover, we were very proud

beeing one of the top ten countries with the

highest exchange numbers!

Last year the General Assembly of IAESTE Switzerland took place at Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) in Winterthur. Every year, the «Trainee of the year Award» is celebrated on this occasion as well.As our exchange is always done on a 1:1 basis, two incoming and two outgoing students held a small presentation about their own experiences in a foreign country, personalizing the exchange between the countries Panama &

Switzerland respectively Spain & Switzerland. Hearing interesting stories about their internships and

work or special experiences such as the first snowfall in their life here in Switzerland, getting used to the Spanish siesta or the humid weather of Panama, gives us always great motivation to do our job as good as we can. It is really amazing to see how our work helps young persons to develop new abilities and to grow personally.

This year we have a special gift for some of

our incoming students: with a bit of luck they

can win a bike-rental for the period of their

internship stay here in Switzerland. Sergio

Rodriguez from Spain, current intern at Paul

Scherrer Institute in Villigen, was the first one

in receiving this great prize and

was very excited about it.

Sabine Lenz participated in SID 2014 at the beginning of

April as Swiss representative. As every year, different workshops (e.g. about IAESTE strategy for 2020, finance, marketing & communication or IT development) were held to implement and discuss new strategies and guidelines for the further development and improvement of IAESTE International. Participating in SID is always a good way of contributing to make IAESTE globally even better. It is amazing to see how many persons from all over the world are heading towards the same goal: international exchange and comprehension!

IAESTE «EN SUISSE ROMANDE»

The IAESTE office in Lausanne was founded already 7 years ago. During this time we success fully extended our network in the French speaking part of Switzerland.Due to our presence at events such as the Forum HESSO or Forum EPFL in Lausanne, two of the biggest career fairs in this region, as well as giving information events at different universities and universities of applied sciences, we were able to increase our publicity amongst the students.Furthermore, we initiated different cooperations such as with CERN or the «International Link» from the Chamber of Commerce from the Canton of Vaud and also in the area of universities. We are, for example, about to establish our exchange as well with the «Faculté des hautes études commerciales» from the University of Lausanne. Their students are very interested in internships in business or economics. During the past few years IAESTE was able to offer more and more placements in these study fields.Remarkable is as well the extension of our network concerning Swiss employers in this region who are interested in hiring an international intern at their company. We’re very happy to tell that we managed to offer over 20 internship placements in the Romandie in 2014 – as many as never before!Barbara Lingel, Responsible for Romandie

Filipa Oliveira, IAESTE Alumna from Portugal, came to Switzerland in 2011. She stayed at her internship place and is now regularly employed at Burckhardt + Partner, an architecture office in Lausanne:

When I came to Lausanne, it was supposed to be only for 6 months and I had no great expectations. Right after my first month in the office, I felt that this country was THE country to work abroad. I loved the working environment and the projects; having colleagues from all over the world and especially the trust and responsibility they gave me from the beginning on, even as an intern. Almost 3 years later, I am still at the same place and I still love my work. I don't plan to stay in Switzerland my whole life, but surely the day I will leave, a truck will be necessary to transport all my «Swiss life»: all the knowledge (professional and personal) I gained, my Swiss and international friends, the Swiss culture which I really like and specially my new love for the mountains and nature.

Filipa Oliveira

Mr Heinrich Hofmann, Professor at EPFL in Lausanne and Mr Guido Schenk, Head of the Quality Management Department at Nestlé PTC in Orbe are happy to answer our questions:

What motivated you to let foreign IAESTE interns work with you?Mr Hofmann: As a Swiss university, it is part of our culture to have the best possible exchange of students. Students from other countries are always a scientific and cultural enrichment for our own research group. New ideas can be tried out and interesting projects can be prepared in this way. In addition, with each invited student we give a Swiss student the possibility to participate in the program. Consequently, we have a double benefit: exchange students who come back to Switzerland are usually highly motivated to finish their studies successfully and have accumulated quite a lot of «life experience».

Mr Schenk: There are several reasons. Firstly, young persons must have the opportunity to get in contact with professional life. Secondly, it is also a pleasure to work together with young and motivated students who have a different cultural background. Thirdly, it is always beneficial if more experienced persons share their way of working with others. Only by explaining their own way of thinking, people start to reflect whether a solution is really the best way to handle something or not.

What do you appreciate most about the IAESTE service?Mr Hofmann: The most important thing is the good selection and preselection of the students. The assistance in finding an accommodation is also very positive. Promoting the integration of students into the university and lots of activities offered by IAESTE give the students an additional insight into the local way of life, which is also very valuable.

Mr Schenk: It is serious, fast and reliable.

We have asked employers and one former intern of the region about their experiences with IAESTE Switzerland.

TWINNING WITH LITHUANIAEvery year one LC from Switzerland is travelling to another country for a so called Twinning with another IAESTE LC. The purpose is to learn more about the differences in their work and organisation and to exchange experiences, to make the LC work in the own country more efficient. In June 2014, the LC Zurich met the Lithuanian LC in Kaunas. The LC Kaunas only consists of five people (one National Secretary and four volunteers) and, apart from taking care of the interns, the LC is also responsible for all administrative issues. In Switzerland it is the National Office that takes over all administrative tasks. This shows how different IAESTE can be organised internationally because in Switzerland the National Office and the Local Committees do mostly act independently. Besides workshops and discussions, we had the opportunity to travel to the most beautiful places in North and West Lithuania. Furthermore, we could also taste some traditional food and learn a traditional dance. This was really exciting. We had the opportunity to get a good sense of Lithuanian food, nature, culture and, of course, the IAESTE work.

With this in mind «I sveikata» and «iki»! («Cheers» and «Bye, bye»!)Lena Arent

INTERNATIONAL ZURICH WEEKENDThe International Zurich Weekend 2013 was revived after a gap of a few years and was a great success with over 50 people from different IAESTE organizations in Europe joining in. The key highlights of the event were the Zurich city rally, the Rhine falls, the Üetliberg hike and enjoying Swiss food, such as Raclette, Fondue, Rösti, Bratwurst and a lot more. All participants gave a very positive feedback and suggested to do the International Zurich Weekend every year. Based on the positive experience from last year, the International Zurich Weekend was planned even larger this year with more participants and activities like the International Food & Drink Night.

JUMP IN MALTAJUMP (Join Us to Motivate People) is a yearly Motivation Seminar. Nine members from different Swiss LCs represented IAESTE Switzerland at JUMP in Malta. The location was an inland holiday apartment complex on the beautiful island of Gozo, the smaller of the two Maltese islands. Already on the way on the ferry we met some other JUMPers from all around the world.

We had different seminars on motivation, leading a LC and the structures of IAESTE during the day time and socialized in the evening, either in the swimming pool or in the party room. Our LC members made friends not only with the Maltese organizers, but also with the IAESTE people from all over the world. The IAESTE International Evening with food and drinks from all around the world was the highlight of our social exchange. The Maltese host organized a sightseeing tour on the beautiful Mediterranean island with its unforgettable landscapes and we were impressed about the gigantic rocky coast line formations.

Participating at JUMP increased our already high motivation and we are ready to use it for future IAESTE activities and services. We continuously support JUMP and do recommend this motivation event to every new LC member as this is a good chance to get into the IAESTE spirit.

Christoph Bucher from Switrzeland, Outgoing IAESTE intern at Xingyu Automotive Lighting Systems Co., Ltd in Changzhou, China:

Zhihao Yang from China, Incoming IAESTE intern at Whitebag GmbH in Zurich, Switzerland:

general, a lot of bikes are on the road, but you can relatively safely join the bike crowd and drive with the flow.

Did the internship influence your future plans so far? What positive experiences can you take home? You learn to be patient and serene. Due to communication problems the work flow is slowing down and you just have to take into account more time to reach the goal. Both the development and production was introduced in detail, therefore I could learn a lot about the industrial production of plastic parts. Based on my independent work with the latest version of the OrCad program I can prepare myself for future projects. In addition, I can learn about circuits in real life practice which where only theoretically explained at the University.

Does your in-ternship so far correspond to your expecta-

tions? Absolutely! I work

in the electronics department and was as

signed to a project that has the aim to form a constant luminous

intensity of the LEDs in headlights for cars. I can independently design a new layout for the Printed Circuit Board and develop enhancements to the existing circuit with the help of a new software. In addition, I am also involved in current events, occasionally support team members with translations and can participate in the EnglishCorner (team members meet to practice English). My colleagues seem to have great pleasure in working together with a foreigner and they are treating me very friendly.

What was the biggest surprise so far? As a European, you still have the status of an exotic person in China. On one’s way you attract often curious glances and locals request you to take a group photo with them while they ask you to hold their children in your arms. Therefore, you are regularly surrounded by a group of pedestrians causing a small spectacle.

What was so far the most difficult thing to get used to in China? You have to get used to the traffic! Especially on multilane intersections a safe crossing without horning is hardly possible despite the traffic lights. Since I have received an old bike from the company to go to work, I quickly got used to it. In

Even on hiking trails there is a lot of «traffic» in China

Does your internship so far correspond to your expectations? It’s even better than I expected. Whitebag GmbH is a startup using the cuttingedge technology to build up business through simplicity. I am working on a mobile app which allows users to buy wine by just scanning the wine bottle using your smart phone, receiving it automatically to your home. Although only an intern, I am fully in charge of the iOS app development. Thanks to the team, I can always receive help when I get stuck in the code and I also learn how to be more professional during the development. The first version of my “Vinyo” App is already available in the Apple store, which gives me a strong sense of achievement and confidence.

What was the biggest surprise so far? There are always a lot of surprises happening in daily life, even though some of them may just be small things. One of the biggest surprises was my phone being found again after I lost it in the bus on my way to work. I got a mail from the lostandfound office of Zurich and was informed to pick it

up. This is Switzerland! In my home country such things never happen!

What was so far the most difficult thing to get used to in Switzerland? The most difficult thing to get used to is the incredibly high living standard in Switzerland. In the first months, it's so hard to accept such high prices in the supermarket. But now, since I get a salary every month, which is quite enough for my living, travel and some other costs, I am getting used not to put the price first into consideration when buying something.

Did the internship influence your future plans so far? What positive experiences can you take home? Thanks to this internship, which opens my eye on an international field, I can better evaluate myself especially concerning my professional skills and personal interests. I am not only learning how to build a software out of an idea to a released product, but I also learn the thinking pattern and the way to work by talking and discussing with my colleagues. I can learn a lot: being ready and bold to express your own ideas, willing to respect the work habits of different kind of people, and being passionate and patient to work together in a team with a common goal.

The IAESTE exchange is always based on a 1:1 system. This enabled Zhihao Yang from China to come to Switzerland and to under-take an internship at Whitebag GmbH in Zurich.

With my colleagues from Whitebag GmbH at IAESTE BBQ on the rooftop terrace

Mitko Tanevski from Macedonia is our oldest and a particularly loyal member of the Local Committee (LC) Lausanne since many years. He already joined IAESTE in the year 2000 and is still active. He is talking about his positive experiences.

I became a member of IAESTE already in 2000 in Macedonia where I come from. Two years later I did my first IAESTE internship and in 2006 I finished my third, which I completed at Hilti AG in Schaan, Liechtenstein. During this stay I got to know Switzerland as well and some years later I got the opportunity to do my PhD at the Institute of Microengineering in Neuchâtel. So since 2008 I am a member of the LC Lausanne and by now I became the oldest one – both by age and by the time being a part of it.

Although not a student anymore, I am still involved taking care of the Web&IT issues of LC Lausanne. Lately I am not active in organising events but the Web&IT tasks enable me to still keep IAESTE in my life. I know IAESTE for more than 14 years now, I have been in and out, but I never lost the connection to it completely. So it is like a longlasting, but still passionate relationship we are having, IAESTE & me.

How does it come? Becoming a part of it is always a winwin situation: as a student one finds appealing the idea to gain some work experience while living and travelling in another country. And as IAESTE always provides paid internships, you have much less to worry about financing your stay and travel. On top of that, you have the opportunity of becoming a member of a LC, to gain experience and to immerse yourself in the work of a nonprofit organization. And last but most important, you are doing all of that with great people that share your interests.

Reflecting about IAESTE, I always took the founding values of it at face value: IAESTE was formed in 1948 after the Second World War as one of the many efforts to prevent national isolation that might lead to wars and conflicts. Nowadays, we still face problems at an international level, based on differences in nationality, language or religion. I do believe that IAESTE creates a bridge across those differences and directly impacts the future of the world. For me, the existence of IAESTE is a great blessing for all of us.

Mitko Tanevski, LC Lausanne
