BURTON RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB LTD.144th Annual General Meeting

Called for at Peel Croft on Wednesday 15th July 2015, starting at 19.30Chairman: Mr. K. R. Wrathall.

1. Present K R Wrathall, M W Evans, W Leason, D Bradley, A M Campbell, Y Tweddle, R Wheeldon, C Wheeldon, A M Bullock, A Peach, J Edwards (Jnr), M Tweddle, R Fearn, C Atkinson, P J Cartwright & I W Cartwright.Apologies D Gill, D Cartwright, J W Cartwright, P Cartwright, H Peach, J Peach

At the due start time of 7.30pm only 16 members were present and the relevant rules, shown below were consulted:

7.4 The quorum at any General Meeting shall be 20 Members. 7.5 If within thirty minutes after the time appointed for a General Meeting

a quorum is not present, the Meeting, if convened on the requisition of Members, shall be dissolved, and in every other case it will stand adjourned to such other day and at such time and place, or be dissolved, as the Committee shall determine.

The President informed the meeting that those nominated to act in elected roles will take up those positions as if they had been duly elected.

The meeting was formally closed at 8.04 pm.

Subsequently those General Committee Members present met and discussed the situation regarding an AGM:

KRW, MWE, WFL, YT, AB, JE, DB, PJC, AP, CA & IWC

Options identified:• Try again on 26 July• Not try again and allow GC to use their powers to fill positions

The costs associated with giving notice of a further meeting and the possibility that again a quorum may not achieved were discussed.

PJC asked if the meeting could be held earlier in the year – MWE explained that any earlier runs the risk of inaccuracy regarding the accounts as production of the booklet already determines the date upon which the meeting is called.

WFL suggested that in terms of history it would be a break in tradition. PJC suggested that the gravity of the poor attendance should be conveyed to members.

It was proposed by KRW that no AGM be held and that those nominated pick up the relevant roles and that at the next General Committee Meeting the vacancies are formally filled in accordance with Rule 12.4. AP seconded the proposal and a unanimous vote was returned. The General Committee Meeting was declared closed at 8.41pm.

Burton Rugby Football Club Ltd.Honorary Secretary’s Report Season 2015/2016

The 1st XV returned to Midlands West One. Unlike most seasons, where one or two clubs pull clear; each week the order of the top half would change. Burton lay fifth at the half-way point only five points off the lead. The second half of the campaign saw only four wins and an eighth place finish. A win over Walsall & a walk-over pitched Burton into the Staffordshire Cup Final with Lichfield from National Three Midlands as the opponents. A slow start was followed by some inspired play from Burton which took them into a 19-17 lead, however they couldn’t turn pressure into points and Lichfield pulled away to a flattering final score.

The Under 17s reached the Semi-final of the National Plate and the Under 14s won the Staffordshire Plate.

Levi Davies represented the Midlands and England under 18’s (both in the 6 Nations and in South Africa). Spuddy Taylor played for The Royal Navy, winners of the Inter-Services trophy.

Playing and Coaching (Many thanks to the super-efficient Jono Edwards for the original information)

All change within the Playing and Coaching team this term as Steve Smith (Director of Rugby), Steve Briggs (Team Manager) and Steve Harris (Fixture Secretary) all decided to relinquish their roles. The club is very thankful for all of the hard work, time and effort that they have all put in over the past seasons and I’m sure they have enjoyed the free time which is now available to them.

So time for a new regime and it had an air of the lunatics taking over the asylum as three ex-players made up the new management team. Mark Tweddle moved into the role of Director of Rugby, assisted by Craig Dutton. Jono Edwards was appointed Team Manager.

Harry Titley also took over as Club Captain from Josh Cartwright who also stood down after a successful time as captain.

A new team and fresh ideas with a simple goal to provide the player’s with the best facilities and rugby environment that the club can offer to enable the club to be successful and to be the “go to club in the Midlands”.

With this objective in mind the club kick-started the new era with the revelation that it had clinched a Premiership-level deal with the announcement that it had secured an agreement to use St George’s Park as its weekly training facility. Usually only reserved for the England national football teams, the seniors, colts and junior colts had exclusive use of the state-of-the-art, £105 million full size indoor 3G pitch as its training for one evening per week. The agreement was secured for the 2015/16 season, but it’s hoped the deal will mark the start of a productive, long term community partnership. The Perform centre at St. George’s Park is a world-class sports medicine and human

performance facility and again the playing and coaching team managed to broker a deal to use this facility for players who were injured or needed some form of rehabilitation.

Function Jigsaw www.functionjigsaw.co.uk who can boast Leicester Tigers as teams they have worked with in the past also provided a fully qualified therapist who provided physiotherapy and rehabilitation services to the club each Tuesday and also match day support. Complimentary services that were made available included baseline screening for players, player education on concussion management, Cry (cardiac) screening and Hep B immunity, education on private healthcare and income protection schemes. All of which will helped towards keeping the players fit and available for selection as well as ensuring their wellbeing.

The club boasted one of the “best” coaching teams in the country at any level as the team were coached by Tom Barlow and Nick Adams.

The club gym over the past 12 months has been transformed by the efforts of Matt Tivey. The work Matt has put in now means the gym is a facility which provides added value to the club members. He also secured a £1000 grant from the East Staffordshire Sports Council for help with new equipment and the refurbishment. All of this did not go unnoticed and at the annual players dinner Matt was awarded the Bob Watson Trophy for his services to the club on and off the field.

As always, as we are an amateur organisation, we cannot provide these World Class facilities without the kind support of our sponsors and we would like to thank all sponsors at all levels who have again very kindly supported the club.

1st XV Played F A Won Draw Lost Win %1st XV 29 753 597 14 0 15 48.28%

The 1st XV team dropped down a level following relegation from level 5. The league looked on paper as competitive as it has ever been with 9 clubs who had previously had National League 3 Midlands experience.

It would be a fair assessment that at 1st XV level the team under performed. From going from a position of strength at Christmas where the team was top of the league, albeit level on points with 4 other clubs and then to fall away as we did was disappointing. Yes the team was savaged by injuries and the playing and coaching committee acknowledge that we did not recruit enough in areas where players moved on, but some of the later performances were below par. A notable performance was the away win at Bridgnorth (eventual league winners) where we ended their 2 year unbeaten home record. What is for sure is that when we have a squad of 22-25 fully fit players we are match for anyone in this league and I’m sure we will compete again next season.

There was the opportunity of some silverware at the end of the season as the 1st XV reached the final of the Staffordshire Cup where against old rivals Lichfield we had a chance to retain the cup for the first time in the clubs history. But after a

spirited performance we finally succumbed to a talented Lichfield side, 19-39, which did flatter them a little considering the pressure we had them under at the start of the 2nd half.

A combination of injuries to senior players and the re-introduction of Under 18’s and Under 17’s training with the senior team allowed some of the youngsters to take centre stage and gain experience at 1st XV level. No fewer than eight players under 20 making their 1st XV debuts, which must be some kind of record and a credit to the clubs mini and junior section. Players on debut were: Josh Shaw, Joes Gorman, Tom Benjamin, Jeri Oldfield, Alfie Grant, Chaz Bunting, Will Bearsdmore and Levi Davis.

Landmark appearances were achieved and ties presented to the following players. 100 – Tom Murphy; 50 – Dominic Taylor, Joe Briggs, Ed Henry, Jack Neal, Joe Gazzard, James Davies, Eddie Nicholls. Craig Dutton (205) and Matt Tivey (222) also breached the 200 appearance mark, with Josh Cartwright (161) passing 150 appearances.

A XV Played F A Won Draw Lost Win %A XV 21 572 486 12 0 9 57.14%

The A XV actually ended up with the best win record of the three senior sides. Notable wins against Burntwood 1st XV and Tamworth 1st XV as well as successive wins against Lichfield in the league and then the cup. Injuries and lack of front row had an impact towards the end of season with 3 of the last 7 games being cancelled by Burton. Many thanks to Rob Wakelin for his match day support this season with organising the team and a few cameo appearances.

Social XV Played F A Won Draw Lost Win %Social XV 22 492 677 9 0 13 40.91%

The Social team started the season as the Barbarians as due to how the fixtures were organised 5 or their first 7 fixtures were away. In fact they lost their first 7 games but it did not deter them as they then went on a 5 match winning streak themselves. The idea of Social rugby was an idea at the start of this season and has been a success. The social team has played 22 games whereas last year the Bees and Vets played a combined total of 12 games. 80 players have played social rugby this season with some new and old faces turning out with a good camaraderie which we hope to build on next season. It is hoped we can work on this further and introduce more Vets rugby next season. The team has two good clubman at its helm in Dan Loughlin and Ian Baker and the team are the cornerstone to everything that is good about Burton Rugby Club. Remember it’s better than shopping!

Under 18’s & Under 17’s

A difficult season for the Under 18’s with the Under 17’s providing players and support. However on a positive note many of the players have played regular senior rugby at or levels and as already demonstrated some have made the leap to 1st XV

level before their 18th birthday. The Under 17’s had more success as they were crowned Midlands Plate champions, but losing narrowly in the National Plate semi-final at Moseley. They also reached the Staffordshire Cup final but again came up a little short. The Under 17’s have a good structure and some promising players who I’m sure will make an impact in the years to come.

Many thanks to the management team of Danny Bayes, Paul Newcombe, Tim Collingwood and Craig Dutton.

Ladies and GirlsThere has been something of a resurgence in Junior Girls Rugby with Richard Williams leading the way and pupils form Oldfields School in Uttoxeter providing many of the players.

O2 Touch RugbyThis campaign has continued to receive great attendances thanks to the efforts of Jo Fargher, Angelo Nel and Liam Collett among others.

Mini JuniorThe Mini Junior season got underway with the usual well attended Registration Evening.

Numbers were again healthy and the children as keen as ever. Numerous tours and festivals took place. Dan Loughlin put in a huge effort to stage the Minis tour.

The Under 16s beat Malvern to win the Dave Bowen Cup. Dave Bowen was Captain and President of Burton RFC and his family donated the trophy to be competed for annually between the two clubs, both of which have great significance to the Bowen family.

Mini Junior led the way in the Spring Draw. Many thanks to Ken Barlow for securing the amazing prize of a brand-new Car. Thanks to Ken and Declan Bradley for spear-heading the sales campaign and achieving a fantastic result.

This has turned out to be the last of several seasons when Declan Bradley and Nikki Collet have been Chair and Vice Chair of Mini Junior respectively. They have worki tirelessly and committing huge amounts of their time to provide children with the opportunity to play Rugby and we are greatly indebted to them.

There are a great number of volunteers who commit to supporting Mini Junior Rugby and without such commitment it would not be possible to provide the youngsters such great experiences.

We are very lucky to have highly skilled and enthusiastic Coaches throughout the Club. Our Club Coach Coordinator, Pete Bunting, continues to provide them with a fantastic service.

As ever we are all indebted to our band of Referees.

Off the fieldThe Honorary Treasurer will relate at the AGM how the last financial year saw a great end result. This success is due to the efforts of the Promotions and House & Bar sub-committees, however as always your subscriptions and contributions to various fund raising initiatives have been vital. The generosity of members and visitors to the club in supporting various charities should also be noted. Muscular Dystrophy UK, St Giles Hospice, Help for Heroes, Children in Need & The Wooden Spoon Society are among the clauses to have benefited.

Healthy income is only one part of the equation. There are always things requiring expenditure but careful management of costs helps achieve a healthy balance. The Ground Committee, ably led by Ady Bullock have managed within budget. An exceptional item of the part-complete Lichfield Street fence repairs will make the Peel Croft far more attractive.

There have again been some fantastic social events. The Ball continues to be a great celebration. The Sportsman’s Dinner was a sell-out at the Pirelli Stadium and John Bentley was the lively and entertaining Guest Speaker. The Christmas Extravaganza was the usual success.

Phil Foster, Kay Billings and Claire Gibbs produced great food for a variety of occasions which provided a valuable revenue stream and also drove up ‘wet sales’.

Ladies Day was a fantastic occasion. Thanks to Deb Cartwright who is standing down having organised this event for the past few years.

As ever we are extremely grateful to the Bar Team for looking after us all superbly with Phil Foster and Emma Redfearn managing proceedings most efficiently. We all know of their great cheerfulness and patience but this was officially recognised as they secure the Rugby Club of the Year award for 2015, having treated mystery customers to the same very high standard as everyone else.

The club now has a working Defibrillator and training has been provided to members. Many thanks to Nikki Collet for securing the unit and the training. A mobile unit to serve the Ox Hay is something to plan for next.

The failing of the club to ever honour members who gave their lives in World War II was finally put right. Terry Roberts, David Gwilt and Dick Sands generously funded a new plaque and the refurbishment of the World War I plaque. A moving dedication ceremony took place with club members and family members of the fallen in attendance.

The Development Committee spear-headed by Colin Grimsdell have been working incredibly hard behind the scenes. It can only be recorded here that the potential of the move taking place has significantly increased in the last twelve months. This is a delicate matter and Colin will report to the AGM in as much detail as possible at the time.

Kevin Wrathall has been our President for the last three seasons and is standing down, due to work commitments. Kevin has given great service and endured some really challenging issues which had to be overcome during his tenure. Kevin had the foresight to initiate Project Genesis as he became President and what a master-stroke this has proven to be. The quality of time people spend in the club is vastly improved by the improved surroundings and the upturn in finances have only been possible due to Kev’s vision and the great work of others – a great endorsement of his period in office. Kevin is keen to remain involved in the running of the club and his experience will be invaluable. A massive thank you to Kevin and also his wife Karen for the last three years.

Sadly the last twelve months has seen the passing of a number of people who had been involved in the activities of the club, namely Hosh Gilbert (Former Committee Member and Patron), Nigel Roulstone (Family Member), David Shrubbs (Former Player and Patron), John Havercroft (Former Committee Member and Patron), John Haywood (Former member & Sponsor (as Ind Coope), John Simpson Smith (Former Family Member), Barrie Gretton (Former Patron and Sponsor), Terry Darby (Former Member & Sponsor), Lou Burns (Family Member) and Dennis Puttick (Former Sponsor).
