Linden New Art Inc. (Linden) aims to be a centre of creative excellence. As a home for new art we are open to bold ideas, to different ways of experiencing and seeing the world and oneself. Linden encourages looking at new art, experiencing new ideas and promotes new ways of thinking by providing starting points for conversations about the world we inhabit. We believe this role is an important part of contemporary art and we aim to foster a curious audience that is open to engaging with new thinking and sometimes challenging viewpoints. As a key cultural asset for St Kilda and the broader Melbourne community we have been supporting creativity for 30 years. We have established a strong reputation as a leading public gallery that focusses on presenting new contemporary art. Our exhibitions, events, printed and on-line resources provide audiences with the opportunity to learn, debate, and explore

CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT

Our 2015 year was a year of change, consolidation and development. I am pleased to report we ended our 2015 year with a surplus of $9,808 as a result of careful management and oversight by the Linden New Art team. With the continuing pressure on finances the Gallery Director and team, with the full support of the Board, carefully assessed every facet of the organisation to determine opportunities to improve efficiencies whilst still delivering the services and programs the City of Port Phillip and our community have come to expect. As such we undertook a review of our organisational structure and our program schedule and have emerged with a streamlined approach delivering a cohesive and integrated range of programs and services. An outcome of this initiative is that precious funds were re-allocated to improve our program delivery.

As a dynamic public gallery with an enviable reputation, punching well above our weight, the Board determined that the time was right to affirm our position in the community and the arts sector. Our aim was to develop a compelling voice and a

fresh contemporary look and feel. As such, we have refreshed our brand and launched our new name, Linden New Art. The new brand respects the legacy inherent in Linden’s thirty year history, keeps focus on our position as a leading visual arts organisation and aligns with our focus on exhibiting only new art from both established and emerging artists. It flags a new stage in the life of Linden and we have received excellent feedback on this initiative. Our positioning puts us front and centre of the contemporary arts landscape in the City of Port Phillip. The Board, Management and staff are committed to working closely with the City of Port Phillip Arts and Culture team to ensure we consistently deliver an engaging, inspirational and bold program of exhibitions, community happenings, masterclasses, artist talks and children’s programs that encourage debate and immersive participation from visitors. This focus has proved successful with participation and engagement numbers growing steadily. The City of Port Phillip has committed to an extensive renovation program for the Linden New Art building in Acland Street, St Kilda, to be undertaken in 2017. The building works will establish a community art space, a retail area, improved accessibility and additional exhibition galleries. The City of Port Philip will have a greatly enhanced and beautiful home for new art. Melinda Martin (Gallery Director), the Board, the City of Port Phillip Arts and Culture and Project Management teams have worked collaboratively over the past 12 months to ensure the design, timing and final development will run smoothly. A key initiative this year has been the establishment of our Young Ambassador sub committee headed by Clementine Lucas. The remit for this team is to foster a love of contemporary art amongst their networks – introducing new people to new art, to develop and implement a series of engaging and relevant events and to activate fundraising initiatives. As we move into our 30th year there will be some special happenings to look out for. As an outcome of our Strategic Planning sessions the Board has ratified our 2016-2020 Strategic and Business Plans. Both were informed by the work completed last year and this year on the brand positioning, the City of Port Phillip Arts and Culture review and through consultation and discussion with key stakeholders. With a rigorous review of our financials and careful budgeting for the next four years I am confident we are in a good position to manage the impact of a six month hiatus when

we move to alternative lodgings in South Yarra, whilst the building works take place and also to manage the impact of a reduction in funding by the City of Port Phillip. We have had a stable board through 2015 with the welcome introduction of Jeremy Blackshaw, a partner at Minter Ellison. Jeremy is an excellent addition to our Board. May I take this opportunity to say thanks to all of our Board members who have each, in their way, contributed to Linden. Catherine Easton (Deputy Chair) and Paul Banks (Treasurer) have provided valuable counsel through the year for which I am particularly grateful. The Linden New Art team has been terrific this year – there have been changes to cope with, developments to absorb and efficiencies to make – all the while continuing to provide outstanding programs and exhibitions to the City of Port Philip community and the arts community at large. Thank you. To our donors, sponsors, supporters and visitors – may I say thank you. We are grateful for your support, custom and input. Finally, thank you to every one of the artists who participated in our exhibitions, programs and events this year. Your work, vision and talent is both outstanding and inspirational. 2015 was another important year for Linden as we changed our name and refreshed our brand to better reflect our focus and clearly articulate what visitors can expect to see on show. Many of our achievements could not have been undertaken without the incredible support and guidance of Linden’s Board and its professional team of arts managers. In particular, our staff Edwina Bolger, Emma Matthews, Lizzie Baikie (until April), Jo Harkin, Tom Pender and Siying Zhou who share an amazing focus, commitment to raising Linden’s profile and improving our program. I thank each of them for all their hard work, humour and passion for art. We also farewelled some long term staff from Linden with Lizzie Baikie moving to New Zealand and April Kaye Ikinci & Lynne Rahill taking up a redundancy. We thank each of them for their hard work and commitment to Linden and wish them all the best with their future endeavours.

Linden’s grand domestic architecture is a starting point from which artists and curators creatively respond. We would like to thank all the artists and curators who developed exhibitions for Linden in 2015. Without these artists’ and designers’ new work that explored a plethora of concerns, Linden’s program would not evolve.

In 2015, Linden presented 8 individual exhibitions displaying the work of 593 artists. Linden exhibited 1,037 new artworks and 47 previously shown artworks. Our program attracted 21,464 visitors.

Linden regularly surveys our visitors to gain a better understanding of their experience of visiting Linden and we are delighted that on average 85% of visitors are very satisfied by their visit to Linden. We also gained a better picture of the demographics of our audience and these indicate that on average:> 95% of our visitors would recommend a visit to Linden to family, friends or colleagues > 48% of our visitors came to Linden for the first time in 2015 and 52% were repeat visitors> 86% reside in metropolitan Melbourne with 32% of these living in the City of Port Phillip> 56% of visitors come with somebody (19% with friends, 11% with family & 26% with a partner) whilst 43% like to visit on their own indicating the importance of some quiet time to contemplate art in our hectic lives > 39% of our visitors describe themselves as artists and 38% as art enthusiasts > 40% of visitors come from Generation X, 19% from Generation Y and 36% were Baby Boomers. Most are women (72%)> 23% visit based on a our media coverage, 16% came from a recommendation from a friend or colleague with 19% checking websites and 21% noticing our new signage and dropping in.

For the first time, we began to gather data on the visitor experience in St Kilda to gain a deeper understanding of their behaviour. We are proud to note that Linden is a starting point for many social engagements and allows for connections between family and friends as well as contributing to a range of health & wellbeing goals:> 54% of visitors had a coffee or visited an Acland Street Cake Shop and contributed $57,000 to the local economy> 34% of visitors shared a meal with friends or family and contributed $250,000 to the local economy> 26% had a drink overlooking the water and 18% enjoyed a walk along the beach> 28% visited the local shops whilst in St Kilda.

Linden continued to measure the work that we do with artists to gain a deeper understanding of the impact our work has on the careers and lives of the artists exhibiting at Linden. The results indicate that:> 88% of artists had an extremely positive experience exhibiting at Linden > 73% would recommend working with Linden to another artist or curator > 88% felt that staff assisted them to present a strong exhibition> 33% of artists were involved in our public programs and all found the experience positive (70% extremely positive)> 45% describe themselves as emerging artists, 16% as mid career and 21% as Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander artists.> 49% live in metropolitan Melbourne with 46% from interstate.

We thank Rachel Feery from Shortplay Productions, who worked with us to record a range of interviews with artists and curators throughout the year. These provided a vital education resource and fascinating insights into the process of curating exhibitions and creating new artworks. > Alex Seton had a busy year with a solo exhibition ‘Paper Armada’, at Jan Murphy Gallery in November 2015 and an international solo exhibition in Paris’ Gallerie Paris-Beijing in September 2015Alex reacted to the politicization of the asylum seeker issue facing Australia through his work in ‘Last Resort’ in the summer of 2014-15 at Linden. > Janice Gobey, who exhibited in Linden’s Innovators 3 in 2014 held a solo exhibition at fortyfivedownstairs in November 2015. She also completed two residencies this year, one at the School of Visual Arts in New York and the other, a collaborative summer intensive between the Slade School of Art and the Camden Arts Centre in London> Stephanie Leigh’s projection work ‘I want to walk home, not run’ was part of MoreArt 2015 in Brunswick in October – December 2015. This work engaged with feminist ideas regarding rape culture, public safety and individual social modifications within the streets of Melbourne. Stephanie won the MARS award of the 2015 Linden Art Prize> Lucas Davidson who exhibited at Linden in Innovators 3, 2014, held a solo exhibition at Gallery Smith Project Space in October. > We were pleased to hear of Brook Andrew’s success in the Australia Council for the Arts Indigenous Professional Development grants. This grant enabled Brook to undertake a residency at ‘Centre Intermondes, La Rochelle, France,’ and present at a symposium in London convened by Tate Britain. Brook Andrew exhibited as part of ‘Witness’ at Linden in 2014.

In 2015 the Linden New Art exhibition program was presented in our new seasonal format – Summer/Autumn/Winter/Spring allowing artists to exhibit for a longer time and for Linden to extend its reach in public engagement. Through eight exhibitions, guest curators and collaborations, the diverse program celebrated the inspiring creative talents of 593 artists locally, nationally and internationally, a remarkable and rewarding achievement. They include: > Solo exhibitions by Sydney sculptor Alex Seton and Queensland photographer Marian Drew, Summer 2014/15. > International Cree Métis artist, Jason Baerg from Canada, exhibiting as part of ‘Linden Projects Atmosphere’ in ‘Tomorrow Never Dies,’ curated by Verity and Adriane Hayward. > ‘Linden Art Prize,’ again presenting an outstanding exhibition of eight finalists across painting, video, installation, drawing, printmaking and sculpture.

Further highlights from the 2015 program include: > We are particularly proud of the diversification and expansion of our Indigenous exhibition program. Guest curator Emma McCowan assisted in bringing together a contemporary and vibrant group of artists from Western Australia, including Fitzroy Crossing, Newman,

and Broome. The opportunity for artists from remote parts of Australia to visit Melbourne and be part of the installation process and to meet with visitors to the gallery to talk about their work is an invaluable and often rare experience. Linden is committed to continue to offer inspiring opportunities for Indigenous artists. > As part of Linden Projects Atmosphere, Debbie Symons presented her chilling video ‘Counting One to Four’. ‘Linden Projects Atmosphere’ was presented as part of ART + CLIMARTE = CHANGE 2015. Debbie’s work presented for the first time at Linden was also exhibited in Paris and New York.

Linden’s reputation as a key supporter of contemporary art across all disciplines led us in 2015 to collaborate with many amazing organisations. These included McClelland Sculpture Park + Gallery, Langwarrin; Mangkaja Art Resource Agency, Fitzroy Crossing; Martumilli, Newman; Short Street Gallery, Broome; Climarte; Sullivan and Strumpf, Sydney; This Is No Fantasy, Melbourne. Collaborations are central to the growth and extension to new audiences. Government representatives and arts industry professionals were generous in their support throughout the year, officially opening exhibitions and judging prizes. Linden’s much loved and anticipated open exhibition, the Linden Postcard Show continued to impress and inspire both artists and visitors to the gallery. The prize once again attracted sponsorship from new and recurring supporters of over $10,000. This open exhibition demonstrates Linden’s commitment to providing opportunities for all artists to contribute to our dynamic exhibition program. Alex Seton’s solo exhibition, ‘Last Resort’, was well received. Empty life jackets, an oar and inflatable life raft were scattered across the gallery floor. Sculpted from marble the work explored our national character and asked viewers “what prevents us from readily extending good faith and protection to those who seek asylum?” A new sound work encouraged visitors to gather around a single light bulb and imagine what it might be like to be caught in the darkened hull of a boat caught on the ocean in a wild storm. The life vests articulate the possible bodies they once housed, moving the audience to realise that people just like themselves risk their lives in order to have a life of peace, opportunity and security in Australia. The work drew on themes Seton has explored in previous work including the specifically commissioned work, ‘Someone died trying to have a life like mine’, 2014, presented at the 2014 Adelaide Biennial.

This body of work has an important synergy with Linden’s history – a home built by a Jewish émigré seeking to grow a business, raise a family and build a better life in Australia; and later as a private hotel that provided accommodation to those travelling from war torn Europe post WWII and to those migrating to Australia, up until its closure in the early 1980’s.

Linden collaborated with McClelland Sculpture Park + Gallery to present a range of public programs and a catalogue across the two organisations, as Seton’s work also featured at McClelland during the summer period of the annual sculpture survey.

Marian Drew’s compelling photographs reference the wealth and privilege of early European still-life painting. She transports the structure & depth of colour to an Australian context with its odd assortment of animals and parched landscapes; ‘old world’ fabrics and tableware jostle with each other. The resulting images are loaded with melancholy and nostalgia; a sad reminder of what was left behind. Drew’s arrangement of Australian abandoned road kill and native flora raise questions about the value we place on our unique natural environment. This collection of darkly brooding and exquisite photographs inspire the viewer to question the beauty in death and to acknowledge that decay is part of the everyday. Drew’s installation of sculptural forms entitled ‘Conceits’, aims to critique the traditional allegories (which require a knowledge of Greek mythology, poetry or history), to upturn the traditional table narrative and invite the audience into an imaginary

play of perceptual connections. ‘Conceits’ was a word used to describe elaborate Baroque table settings; playful deceptions like glass fountains of chocolate or porcelain vessels in the shape of birds or animals. Here Drew presents imaginary figures made in coral, wood, plaster and bronze on a bespoke wood and metal table, this presentation providing a link back to the exquisite corpses of the still life.

Linden was proud to present the second annual Linden Art Prize; a non-acquisitive award established to celebrate excellence and nurture a new generation of artists. “The prize provides the winners with unique access to opportunities, knowledge and experience from established arts industry experts and organisations through its tailored mentoring program. The award is open to those who have recently completed postgraduate study from a Victorian University and the four prizes are awarded with an aim to support the transition from study to professional practice. Linden presented the work of four artists in the ‘Linden Projects: Paper’ exhibition. This exhibition explored how one of the oldest of art medias is used by contemporary artists today and explored how this media can be extended. > Sydney based Gunjan Aylawadi presented a large floor based installation inspired by the patterns of intricate mosaic tiles. In an age where we are always sprinting towards the next thing, her work is informed by the difficult act of slowing down to pay attention to details. Each piece of paper is hand cut and rolled to form thousands of strips of paper that create a single paper mosaic. > Melbourne based Peta Clancy explored the dimensions of photography in her work ‘Puncture’. She presented a new suite of 4 large-scale intimate self-portraits that explore the transformative, fragile and resilient qualities of paper. Using a fine needle

the artist carefully applies thousands of tiny pinpricks through the surface of photographic paper. These markings rupture the surface of the photographic print and form beautiful embroidered patterns that are visible on the surface of the paper. > Melbourne based Becc Orszag presented a new body of drawings for the exhibition. Orszag’s drawings are a strange mix of landscape, portraits and performance presented in a dream like trance. She writes, ‘My drawings are

inspired by found imagery and the written word, from accidental photographs and historical photojournalism to instruction manuals and religious texts. I explore the insatiable human desire for a promised land, a utopia beyond the physical limits of Earth’. > Melbourne based artists, Emma van Leest presented a large-scale installation made from synthetic paper that hung from the ceiling and cast shadows over the viewer. Her work explores the repercussions of exploration and colonialism and considers the notion of the souvenir during this period of conquering and quashing local indigenous cultures and ideas.

Linden presented two solo exhibitions and one group exhibition in ‘Linden Projects: Atmosphere’. These included: > Melbourne based Alice Wormald created a new body of paintings for the exhibition. Her works are based on collages using found images of natural and geological formations, vegetation, rocks and landscapes. > Melbourne based Debbie Symons created a new screen based video work that explored databases of statistics to elucidate environmental crime and question the involvement of capitalistic venture in the critical, global environmental issues now emerging. ‘Counting One to Four’, explored the predicted consequences of our warming atmosphere on the entirety of the Earth’s biodiversity through the use of percentage formulas.

> Melbourne based sisters Adriane & Verity Hayward curated a group exhibition entitled ‘Tomorrow never dies’. The exhibition posited accessible solutions to empower individuals towards collective conciousness within an ever-changing and increasingly damaged planet. ‘Tomorrow never dies’ explored societal illusions that the world will always be there when we wake up tomorrow. Works from local, interstate and international artists presented diverse responses to changes in the environment that

demonstrate the need for urban and global initiatives. Exhibiting artists included: Jason Baerg, Atticus Bastow, Elisa Jane Carmichael, Rebecca Mayo, Jack Rowland and Andrew Tetzlaff.

‘New Frontiers’ presented a selection of contemporary art created in some of Australia’s most remote Indigenous communities including those located in the Great Sandy Desert and the East Pilbara. The six artists included in the exhibition come from diverse communities and are at different stages of their lives and careers. They are creating exciting work that is pushing the boundaries of Indigenous art in terms of its content, style, media and presentation. These artists are concerned with creating artwork that reflects their cultural identity as well as incorporating various influences from their contemporary lives. This exhibition provided the opportunity for a Melbourne audience to see this new wave of artwork. The exhibition was curated by Emma McCowan. The exhibiting artists, who live in remote communities of Western Australia welcomed this opportunity to share their work

with a broad audience. As stated by Daniel Walbidi, ‘I paint to educate people about my culture and our history, and where we come from, so to give people understanding. I also paint so I can learn about my culture from the old people. It is important for me to paint so I can keep my culture strong and living so it can be carried on into the future’. Artists were encouraged to extend and experiment with their practice for this exhibition by producing work that extends their usual practice. For example, Daniel Walbidi, who is highly regarded for his intricately painted depictions of his country presented a sculptural

installation piece. Mabel Wakarta, born in the 1920s is thought to be the eldest working artist at Martumili. She has been painting her ngurra (home) and her warren (country) to teach the young how to paint with energy and enthusiasm since Martumili Artists was established. For this project Mabel presented her vibrant paintings as well as a new work designed to teach children about her painting by involving them in the art-making process. Mangkaja Arts Resource Agency, based in Fitzroy Crossing, presented the work of two senior artists, Tommy May and John Prince Siddon. May depicts the song and story, singing, dancing and Inarra that happens when a waterhole is dug, to bring the rain. The fresh, bright colours in these works result from May’s exploration of paint pen with acrylic on board. The variations of scarcity and density of line convey a changing landscape with relaxed confidence. Siddon’s exciting new works depict elements of Narrangkarni (Dreamtime) and tradition as well as contemporary life. Siddon’s strong individual style is informed by multiple influences, including his forbearers and contemporaries at Fitzroy Crossing as well as prison art. Figures wrap around the curved shapes of metal drums to create dynamic vignettes interspersed with dominant patterning. Collaborating artists Curtis Taylor and non-indigenous artist Lily Hibberd, produced The Phone Booth Project. This poignant video piece centres on a Pilbara pay phone, which stands surrounded by the red desert earth. Taylor and Hibberd provide an intriguing window into daily life in a remote Pilbara desert community, with the aim to tell a new and old story about how Martu have always been communicating, now and into the future.

Since its humble beginnings in 2013, Object Future has become an annual platform in the Melbourne design community for exhibiting a combination of commercial and experimental design outcomes. With the constantly changing landscape of contemporary design practice in Australia, there is the continued need to represent emerging and established practitioners, in order to foster a community and renew discourses surrounding contemporary practice. ‘Object Future III’, curated by Dale Hardiman and Suzannah Henty, commissioned six design studios one year prior to its opening to make an object for the exhibition. In asking the contributors to reflect on their own practice and contemporary creative production, the exhibition presents a consideration into how and why objects are made. No constraint was outlined, allowing the contributors to respond specifically to the exhibition space, with the process through which they traversed determining the final outcome.

The contributors included: Footscray-based glass designer Amos Enders-Moje who explored recycling in design, an integral part of his practice, in his work ‘Nested Light’. Collingwood based Coco Flip’s work Mayu introduced an entirely new material into their practice, exploring the possibilities and potentials of flexible and inflexible materials bound together. Inspired by the atmosphere and ambiance of Iceland during their travels, Kate Stokes and Haslett Grounds have explored transparency, layering and space in their presentation

Melbourne based, Hamish Munro’s practice has focused for several years on the ready-made and explores ideas of adhocism both through jewellery, object design and sculpture.

Footscray based Rosanna Ceravolo’s installation explores composition, proportion and balance deriving from the arrangement of planar geometric components. By working with materials such as stone and precious metals, the consideration of each material and what their relationship is to a joining technique, Rosanna’s final installation ‘Shapes’ reflects Rosanna’s unique way of working with her chosen materials. Working from his North Fitzroy workshop, Hugh Altschwager’s work is focused entirely on production methods.

Altschwager worked directly with a foundry in Fitzroy to explore the potential of limestone as a carrier, opposed to a final product. The work presented by A.C.V Studio (by sculptor Anna Varendorff based in Melbourne) is a direct response to the title of the exhibition. Rather than exploring an object as complete, A.C.V Studio proposes a mechanism for potential and displays this through a series of lines. The final work exhibited in ‘Object Future III’ is not the final form of the work, merely a representation of one typical outcome.

In 2015 with support from the Elwood Community Grants Program and a Besen Family Foundation Grant, Linden delivered a diverse range of education based public programs aimed at encouraging insights into contemporary art practice and ideas. Linden’s Art and Learning and Exploring New Art programs were designed to support the 2015 exhibition program. The series of informal talks, conversations, presentations and creative workshops offered provided opportunities for people to meet artists, curators, industry professionals and specialists in their respective fields and for children and adults to engage in creative workshops in response to exhibitions. Some of the programs offered included: > ‘Meet the Artist’ and ‘Meet the Curator’ talks held in conjunction with exhibitions in which artists and curators discussed themes and ideas explored in exhibited art works. > ‘Artist Speakeasy’ professional development workshops which enabled visual artists to hear from other artists and

industry professionals who offered advice, expertise and guidance for various aspects of their practice. > A series of ‘In Conversation’ dinners held at Circa, The Prince at which guest speakers were invited to participate in a dialogue with guests about issues and themes pertinent to exhibitions at Linden. Topics discussed included Australia’s asylum seeker policies; sustainability and the causes and impacts of climate

change; and ways in which innovative and creative industrial design and architecture can permeate our lives. > ‘On Holidays At Linden’ which offered opportunities for primary school aged children to explore exhibitions and artworks and develop their own imaginative thinking and practical art-making skills in creative workshops. Overall, events offered through the Art and Learning and Exploring New Art programs successfully achieved the objectives of providing visitors with opportunities to engage first hand with the ideas, concerns and creative processes of contemporary art and artists. The range of events offered facilitated opportunities for participants to deepen their knowledge, learn from and be inspired by contemporary art and artists. Linden’s exhibitions provided starting points for discussions and presentations from a variety of speakers. A practical demonstration and talk on the art of taxidermy presented in conjunction with artist Marian Drew’s exhibition ‘Conceipts’ was extremely popular and showed how relevant, innovative and creative programming can be implemented to attract new audiences.

A new initiative in 2015 was the introduction of Sunday afternoon creative workshops at Linden. These were facilitated by artists Jacqui Stockdale and paper engineering enthusiast Louise Seymour from Paperlab and were well attended with participants embracing the opportunity to pursue creative endeavors, learn new skills, engage with other people and create something in a supportive and welcoming group environment. The success of the workshops has seen their continuation in 2016 as the ‘Crafternoon’ series of regular tutored art and craft workshops for adults and children. Collaborative partnerships with the National Gallery of Victoria’s Children’s Programs, Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, St Kilda Festival, Readings and Open House Melbourne resulted in the delivery of a range of community engagement programs that enabled Linden to expand its audience reach and further develop public awareness of the gallery and its programs. NGV KIDS SUMMER FESTIVAL Children and families were invited to Linden to be part of the NGV’s summer exhibitions focusing on fashion and design. Run in conjunction with the exhibitions at NGV: ‘Express Yourself: Romance was Born for Kids’ and the ‘Fashion World of John Paul Gaultier: From Sidewalk to the Catwalk’, children expressed

themselves through a range of hands on activities focusing on fashion and creativity. FINDING THE RIGHT FIT Artists joined Andy Dinan, founder MARS and Melbourne artist Benjamin Armstrong for a discussion about commercial gallery representation and how to find the “right fit”. Andy will speak from the perspective of a gallerist and art consultant with over 10 years experience in collaborating, fostering and promoting midcareer and emerging artists. Benjamin Armstrong is a multidisciplinary artist who has exhibited widely in Australia and overseas and is represented by Tolarno Galleries, Melbourne. CREATE YOUR OWN STILL LIFE In response to the sill life photographs of Marian Drew, visitors were invited to create their own still life tableaux by arranging props and elements typical of those used by 17th century Dutch still life painters. Drawing materials were supplied and visitors were invited to share photos of their creations via Instagram. LINDEN OPEN STUDIOS DROP IN Visitors were invited to drop in and meet resident artists Tom Vincent and Emma Hamilton in their studios at Linden. Children could weave a coiled piece of coral out of recycled ropes, plastics and fibres. Children helped the sea bed grow across the gallery wall and learnt about the way plastic pollutants damage the world under the sea. PAPERCUTTING WORKSHOP Participants learnt the techniques of the intricate art of papercutting with Louise Seymour from Paperlab. Taking inspiration from artist Emma van Leest’s installation in ‘Linden Projects: Paper’ participants were able to create up to three hand cut pieces to take home. Sadly most are now gone. Visitors joined Peter Johnson to re-discover some of the forgotten glories from this period. Peter Johnson is a local architect who has been researching St Kilda’s history for the past 20 years. He is the current president of the St Kilda Historical Society. COLLAGE WORKSHOP WITH JACQUI STOCKDALE Participants learnt some fundamentals of creating an original 8 x 10 inch collage artwork with Melbourne artist Jacqui Stockdale. Jacqui has taught all over Australia and is founder of Art Class Co. Since graduating from the VCA in 1990 she has exhibited extensively in Australia and overseas winning numerous awards including the Doug Moran Prize in 2012 and most recently the Australia Council Barcelona Studio Residency. 2015 was an exciting and significant year for Linden with the launch of our new name, Linden New Art and a reinvigorated look and feel for the organisation with the launch of a new website, new signage and consistent branding aesthetics across all our marketing material. Linden New Art continued to produce and distribute our quarterly calendars to gallery visitors, City of Port Phillip Libraries and Town Hall foyers, local restaurants and hotels and other community hubs. Our annual DL size foldout calendar can now be picked up from Federation Square’s Tourist Information Centre. We view Linden’s inclusion in the visitor centre as an important step in encouraging tourists to explore the diversity of St Kilda. In 2015, Linden also continued to grow our network of collaborators. The exhibition ‘Linden Projects: Atmosphere’ was included in Climarte’s Art + Climate = Change festival and will feature in a book to be published by Melbourne University

Press in 2016. Linden collaborated with remote Indigenous Arts Resource agencies, Mangkaja and Martumilli, forging new relationships with remote Indigenous communities and connecting them with audiences in Melbourne. Linden applied a new strategy to our Expi mobile app in 2015, and developed a series of interesting anecdotal profiles of our exhibiting artists. This provided our audiences with

multiple ways to interact with and learn about the artists. In 2015, Linden made a concerted effort to maintain relationships with local businesses and increased involvement with St Kilda Tourism & Events by electing a staff member on their committee who formed a sub-committee to concentrate on promoting arts and culture within the City of Port Phillip. St Kilda Tourism and Events has been active throughout the year promoting Linden’s exhibition and events via their revitalised website and through physical handouts from their St Kilda Visitor Info ‘Kombi’ van. During 2015, Linden implemented strategies from the Communications and Marketing Strategy document, timing eDMs, social media blasts, poster campaigns and advertisements to maximise our impact on current and potential audiences. This strategy included an increased focus on targeting local audiences.

ONLINE & SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT

2015 saw Linden further grow our social media presence. We saw the platforms of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Vimeo and Flickr as valuable and effective ways to communicate with our current supporters and extend our reach to new audiences Engagement has increased throughout the year, particularly with Instagram. Linden’s interaction with the design sector throughout the exhibition ‘Object Future III’ significantly increased Instagram followers. Many of the exhibiting artists and curators were actively engaged with social media whilst promoting the exhibition, which in turn extended our audience reach. Linden also uploaded video content to Instagram during 2015 and plans to use more video content where possible in the future. The 2015 Linden Postcard Show saw a revitalised campaign in the build up to the launch of the prize across all our social

media platforms. There was a renewed focus on ‘behind the scenes’ during the delivery and installation of postcard works and a campaign that counted down the days until the exhibition opened using artists’ works. This focus motivated contributing artists to maintain engagement with social media, as they awaited the possibility that their works may be included in the countdown. There was evidence of increased commentry across all our social media platforms at this time.

CELESTE CHANDLER Celeste Chandler graduated with a PhD from The Victorian College of the Arts in 2015. Her paintings explore the threshold between our internal and external experiences and sensations manifest in the surface of the body and most particularly the face. A recipient of The Windsor Art Award (2013), The Sunshine Coast Art Prize (2013) and The R&M McGivern Prize (2009), Celeste has been exhibited in numerous solo, curated and finalist exhibitions in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Canberra since graduating from her MFA (UTAS) in 2004. Since receiving the Linden Board encouragement Award and Studio Prize in 2015 Celeste has held a solo exhibition at Heiser Gallery in Brisbane; produced a large wall installation for ‘Likeness’ at The Town Hall Gallery, Hawthorn; exhibited in ‘Shift’ at The Counihan Gallery, Brunswick, and was a finalist in the Portia Geach Memorial Award 2015 and The Kennedy Prize 2015. Celeste is currently working towards a solo exhibition with Nicholas Thompson Gallery in Collingwood to be held in October

2016.

EMMA HAMILTON Emma Hamilton is a Melbourne-based artist who has a keen interest in the materiality of the photograph. Oscillating between sculpture and photography, her practice grapples with the relationship between these spheres. Emma has exhibited widely in Melbourne, as well as showcasing her practice in Sydney, Perth, Launceston, Mildura and Nantes (France). In 2014 the Australia Council for the Arts awarded her a three-month residency in Paris at the Cité Internationale des Arts. Emma completed a Masters of Fine Art by Research at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2013. LUCINDA STRAHAN Lucinda Strahan is a writer and journalist with an ongoing interest in visual languages and hybrid forms. She has published extensively on visual art and culture in newspapers, magazines and arts journals, and her experimental literary-visual works have been shown in the exhibitions ‘Girls! Girls! Girls!’ (2008) and ‘Writing Naked’ (2009). Lucinda is currently working on a literary-visual project based on a series of personal essays as part of a PhD candidature in Creative Writing at Wollongong University. She is a faculty member in the School Media and Communication at RMIT University. TOM VINCENT Hailing from Melbourne, Tom Vincent’s first experiences of the art world were through street art and graffiti. Whilst painting train corridors and laneways as a teen he uncovered the concept of ‘sacred geometry’, a science that gives a multi-faceted understanding of our reality. Through the study of this science, Vincent was prompted to move his practice into the studio and hence began a detailed investigation of the patterns of this world.

SARAH BRENNAN > CHAIR Sarah has fifteen plus years in leadership roles with multinational companies and advertising agencies. Sarah’s expertise covers brand management, sponsorship, strategic marketing and the development and delivery of complex communication projects across a wide variety of marketing disciplines. Previous roles include General Manager at DDB Hong Kong; Marketing Director at Walt Disney Home Entertainment; Head of Communications at Breast Cancer Network Australia; Lecturer in Strategic Planning at RMIT and Marketing Director at Diversified Exhibitions. Sarah joined the board of Linden in December 2013 and was appointed Chair in May 2014. Sarah’s previous board roles include Chair of Red Stitch Theatre & Ballarat International Foto Biennale. CATHERINE EASTON > DEPUTY CHAIR Catherine has extensive senior leadership experience of operational teams, organisational change management and strategic

programs of work. Catherine is Head of Programs & Operations at SuperFriend. Previously held positions include: Head of Business Management at ANZ; Program Director at ANZ and Head of Service Delivery at NAB. Catherine has completed Leadership Victoria’s Folio Community Leadership Program and holds a Master of Strategic Foresight from Swinburne University and Bachelor of Business Administration from RMIT. Catherine

is a previous President of Arts Project Australia Inc and Non-Executive Director of Petit Grand Kaboom Ltd (Little Big Shots International Film Festival for Kids). She is currently a member of Arts Project Australia’s Policy and Planning Sub-Committee and a Mentor at Fitted for Work. Catherine is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Catherine joined the Board at Linden in December 2013 and was appointed Deputy Chair in May 2014. PAUL BANKS > TREASURER Paul is an experienced finance professional with extensive leadership, relationship and marketing experience in both retail and institutional client segments. Paul is the Co-head of Distribution at Australian Unity Investments. He has a demonstrated technical expertise and entrepreneurial flair, with experience in building new businesses from strategy through to implementation. Previous roles include Head of pension client solutions at Morgan Stanley; Executive Director at Goldman Sachs JBWere; and Head of Structured Product at Deutsche Bank. He holds a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment from the NSW Securities Institute; a Bachelor of Arts from Ambassador University, Pasadena, USA and a Bachelor of Business from Charles Sturt University. Paul joined the Board of Linden in December 2013 and was appointed to the role of Treasurer in May 2014. TODD BEAVIS For more than 15 years Todd has helped organisations articulate their goals, grow their influence, solve problems and build great relationships. He provides corporations and cultural institutions with advice on business strategy, stakeholder engagement and creative communication campaigns. Prior to starting his consulting business Todd held senior roles including Head of Business Communications at Australia Post; Director of Corporate Affairs and Communications, Europe for American Express; and Senior Consultant with leading communication agency Senate SHJ. Todd holds a Bachelor of Economics (Political Economy) from Sydney University. Todd joined the Linden Board in June 2013.

Cr VANESSA HUXLEY Vanessa is the City of Port Phillip council representative on the Board. She is the elected Carlisle Ward Councillor at the City of Port Phillip council. Vanessa has extensive experience in human resources and has worked as a recruiter for a number of key agencies. Her current role as a Senior Recruitment Consultant with Patriot Alliance sees her hiring Managers and Senior Management across the business. She holds a Communication’s Degree (Public Relations) from the University of Canberra. Vanessa joined the Linden Board in November 2012. DEBORAH STAHLE Deborah is the founder of Nite Art and Director of Artwalk Melbourne. She is a passionate art enthusiast and has developed programs for facilitating the exploration of art in a selection of leading galleries and art spaces in Melbourne’s creative precincts and regional areas. Deborah has over thirty years experience in sales and marketing within the fashion industry, bringing innovative ideas to customers and audiences, local and international. Deborah joined the Board of Linden in December 2013. JEREMY BLACKSHAW Jeremy is one of Australia’s leading corporate lawyers with a strong track record advising Australian and international clients on mergers and acquisitions and equity capital markets transactions. He is currently a Partner at Minter Ellison and leads the Melbourne office’s largest corporate group and has an extensive corporate practice, advising in multiple jurisdictions across a range of industry sectors including financial services, health, infrastructure, and consumer brands. Jeremy is a member of the Corporations Committee of the Law Council of Australia, a member of the Advisory Board of Melbourne University’s Centre for Corporate and Securities Regulation and an Associate Member of the Financial Services Institute of Australasia. He has lectured in Takeover Law and is a regular presenter on legal issues. Jeremy joined the Board in February 2015.

MELINDA MARTIN > DIRECTOR Melinda joined the team at Linden as Director in July 2012. Prior to joining Linden, Melinda was the Manager of National Programs and Services at the Australia Business Arts Foundation (AbaF) (now Creative Partnerships Australia) and oversaw their professional development and philanthropic programs. Melinda has also worked as the Gallery Manager at Anna Schwartz Gallery, Program Manager at Monash Gallery of Art, Studio Manager for Australian artist John Young and Research Assistant to Dr Chris McAuliffe at the University of Melbourne. She holds a Master of Fine Art & Cinema Studies from The University of Melbourne, a Post-Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies from Deakin University and a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Fine Art and Criminology from the University of Melbourne. Melinda is the Vice President of the Public Galleries Association of Victoria’s Board.

EDWINA BOLGER > CURATOR Edwina joined the team as the acting Curator at Linden in July 2013 and was appointed to the role in March 2014. She project manages the exhibition program. Edwina has extensive experience working in both the commercial and public gallery spheres. She has been both Senior Curator and then Co-Director of Dianne Tanzer

Gallery in Melbourne. Edwina has also worked for Craft Victoria, Alcaston Gallery and Christine Abrahams Gallery. Edwina holds Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art & Classical Studies) from the University of Melbourne, a Postgraduate Diploma in Curatorial/Museum Studies from the University of Melbourne and a Diploma of Education (Secondary) from RMIT. Edwina is currently an approved valuer for the Commonwealth Government’s Cultural Gifts Program. EMMA MATTHEWS > PUBLIC PROGRAMS MANAGER Emma joined the team as the acting Public Programs Manager at Linden in July 2013 and was appointed to the role in March 2014. Emma is responsible for developing and coordinating the range of public programs for Linden. She has edited, written and managed several art book projects including: ‘Wilbow 25: 25 years of the Wilbow Collection of Australian Art’ and ‘Mark Strizic: Marvellous to Modern’. She has worked as the Education and Public Programs Manager at Monash Gallery of Art and was the Gallery Manager at Lauraine Diggins Fine Art. She holds a Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts (Art History) from the University of Melbourne and a Postgraduate Diploma (Art Curatorship & Museum Management) from the University of Melbourne. Lizzie holds a Bachelor of Arts (History of Art and English Literature) from Loughborough University in Leicestershire, UK and a Diploma of Art & Design from Cheltenham & Gloucester College of Art. Prior to joining LInden, Lizzie worked with Martinspeed Ltd - a fine art installation, shipping & storage company in London. She was responsible for managing the logistics and installation of a diverse range of projects in London and across the United Kingdom including Frieze Art Fair, Satchi Gallery and other major commercial spaces.

JOSEPHINE HARKIN > COMMUNICATIONS & MARKETING COORDINATOR (EFFECTIVE FROM 03.08.15) Jo joined the team at Linden New Art in 2014 and was appointed to the role of Communications and Marketing Coordinator in August 2015. Jo comes from a diverse working background including operating her commercial photography business. Jo has interned for both the Ballarat International Foto Biennale and The Public Galleries Association of Victoria where she assisted in the coordination of the Fifth National Public Galleries Summit in Bendigo, 2015. Jo has previous experience teaching photography at Northern Metropolitan Institute of TAFE and holds a Master of Art Curatorship from The University of Melbourne and a Bachelor of Arts (Photography) from RMIT. TOM PENDER > GALLERY ADMINISTRATOR PART TIME Tom Pender joined Linden New Art in the role of Gallery Administrator (Part Time) in July 2015. Tom has previous experience in gallery administration and exhibition installation with the La Trobe University Visual Arts Centre. He has taught essential study skills to Bachelor of Visual Arts students at the La Trobe University, Bendigo. Tom also has a background in video production and was videographer for the documentary Lunch with Madame Murat, which screened on SBS January 2009. Tom received a Bachelor of Visual Art (Hons) from La Trobe University, Bendigo and is a practicing contemporary artist who uses video and installation to explore autonomous use of space. SIYING ZHOU > GALLERY ADMINISTRATOR PART TIME Siying Zhou joined Linden New Art in March 2014 and has worked in the role Gallery Receptionist before taking on the role of Gallery Administrator (Part Time) in July 2015. Her previous roles include: Team Leader at the Australia Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2013; Program Manager at Northern Centre for Contemporary Art (formerly 24HR Art) from 2007 to 2013. She has been working in the Australian contemporary arts industry since 2007 as a practicing artist, a curator and an arts administrator. Siying. holds a Master of Multimedia Design (Hons) from Sydney College of the Arts, The University of Sydney and Bachelor of Visual Arts from Nanjing Art Institute, China.
