ABOUT UCEK
J.N.T.University College of Engineering Kakinada (Autonomous), J N T U Kakinada was
originally ‘The College of Engineering, Vizagpatnam’ at the time of its establishment in the year
1946 by Government of the Composite Madras State. It is now a sprawling campus of 110 acres,
green with mango trees in the fast developing Port city of Kakinada. Kakinada has a rich
political literacy and cultural heritage passed on through generations. This college became a
constituent College of the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad w.e.f 02-10-
1972. The College has become autonomous in the year 2001. On 20th August, 2008 it became a
constituent College for the newly established JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL
UNIVERSITY KAKINADA.
The College is governed by the rules and guidelines provided by the University from time to
time. The Principal is the administrative and the academic Head of the College. He is assisted by
the Vice-Principal and the College Academic Committee in academic matters and the Deputy
Registrar and the office staff in administrative matters. The day-to-day activities of the college
are carried out by budgetary allocation from the University fund.
At present, the College is offering the following programmes:
B.Tech. in Civil Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering,
Electronics & Communication Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Petro Chemical
Engineering and Petroleum Technology, M.Tech. in Soil Mechanics & foundation Engineering,
Structural Engineering, Advanced power Systems, High Voltage Engineering, CAD/CAM,
Machine Design, Instrumentation & Control Systems, Computers & Communication, and
5
Computer Science, Master of Computer Applications (MCA) and PhD programmes in Civil
Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics &
Communication Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Mathematics, Physics and
Chemistry.
The admission into B.Tech is based on EAMCET or ECET ranks, the admission into M.Tech is
based on GATE or PGECET acores and the admission into MCA is based on ICET rank. The
best rankers of the state in the above entrance examinations will get the admission into the
College.
The college has made rapid strides since its formation and is playing a pivotal role in the
technological advances of the region. The college has been admitted to the World Bank Aid
through a programme called Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP)
under which Rs.12 crores aid will be provided. The College stood first in the state and fourteenth
in the Country for the effective utilization of the funds under TEQIP phase-I. All the Engineering
Departments of the College has been accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA)
of AICTE. The TCS has accredited this College as a premier institution with ‘A’ grade. The
Wipro Ltd has accredited this college as ‘Trusted Academic Partner’. Several other companies
like Capgemini, Honeywell, Infosys, Accenture, L&T, etc have also accredited this college.
The Research and Development activity in the College got a boost with the procurement of
modern and sophisticated equipment under MHRD, AICTE and TEQIP schemes. Most of the
faculty members are having Ph.D and a few more are in the process of acquiring. The teaching
faculty members have authored a good number of research papers, research reports and text-
books. Departments in the college have conducted number of summer schools, seminars,
6
workshops, symposia and conferences. In addition, quite a few collaborative research schemes
sponsored by CSIR, CRRI, ISRO. BHEL etc are being carried out. Several working/retired
public and private sector organizations are benefited by consulting this college for technical
advice.
The fully automated Central Library is situated in a separated block housing more than 75,000
volumes and contributed 314 numbers of journals maintained by two qualified librarians and
necessary supporting staff for 12hrs a day for 6 days and 9:00 a.m to 1.00 pm on Sunday. In
addition, a book-bank with more than 3000 volumes is at the disposal of students for borrowing
by BC, SC and ST categories. Over and above, each of the Engineering Departments is having
Departmental Library to reduce the burden on the Central Library and for the convenience of
staff.
The college successfully celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 1971, its Golden Jubilee grandly during
1995 – 1996 and Diamond Jubilee during 2005 - 2006. With the help of funds raised through the
contributions from the Alumni, a Golden Jubilee Block (SwarnotsavBhavan), 1979-83 Alumni
Auditorium has been constructed on the campus. A sports complex of worth Rs. 4 crores is near
completion.
In addition to National Cadet Corps (NCC) and National Social Service (NSS) units, there are
also technical clubs, a few student wings of professional bodies like the student chapter of IEEE
and CSI. The college provides medical facilities on the campus through a dispensary with a
medical officer deputed by the Government of Andhra Pradesh and the supporting staff provided
by the college.
