Dear Readers

Many years have gone by since I moved to Mumbai from

my humble village following my marriage at a very early

age. For over 20 years now, I have been staying in the

Maharashtra Nagar area of Mankhurd. The plight of

people here immediately filled me with despondency.

While it was disheartening, it drove me to try and change

this. My passion to help in the betterment of society

pushed me to enter this field. I was determined but lacked

direction. If I wanted bring some changes, I had to learn. I started meeting different people in

social sector and came in contact with the Community Development Officer of MCGM. As a

woman I understood the power a woman has and effective utilization of this power surged me

forward as I decided to form Self Help Groups (SHGs) under the Swarnajayanti Shahari Rojgar

Yojana.

Women empowerment was the main issue we wanted to focus on and hence we formed

Vishwashanti Mahila Vikas Mandal in 2005. Though women empowerment was our core work

area, we were involved in other community activities like employment generation, child labour

eradication, vocational training, sanitation & health, housing etc. This year the organisation has

been actively involved in many activities like providing midday meals to anganwadi children,

waste management under Swachcha Mumbai Prabodhan Abhiyan, organizing training

workshops for women empowerment and livelihood trainings. For the upcoming year our goal

will be to work towards the holistic development of the community

Regards,

Ms. Sangeeta Kamble,

President, Vishwashanti Mahila Vikas Mandal

of various kinds of employment opportunities, SHGs strengthen women of the society. It also

furnishes for capacity building of women by organizing numerous training and awareness

The Organisation is governed by the principles of Krishi

Jyoti Savitribai Phule. During the days when women were

subject to severe oppression from society, which impeded

them from education and profession, Savitribai Phule came

as a beacon of guidance and progression. Her work in the

field of education of women is astounding. Today women

should feel greatly indebted to her and her efforts. She

deserves plaudits for her remarkable work in various fields.

VSMVM had run a project of Swachch Mumbai Probodhan Abhiyan for 5 years through this

project organisation was able to provide employment opportunities to both men and women.

During the course of the project, various activities were conducted which included cleaning the

surroundings of the society, cleaning gutters and drains in and around society, awareness

programs of solid waste management.

Over the years growing up, we have

heard a plethora of stories. One story in

particular, pertinent to unity is that of the

farmer who housed four extremely

mischievous and quarrelsome children.

The children constantly fought with each

other and drove the farmer up the wall.

After a lot deliberation, he devised a plan

to teach them a lesson. He gave each of

the children a single stick and asked

them to break it. The children were able to break the stick with little effort. Then the farmer gave

them each a bunch of sticks and asked them to break it, all their herculean efforts went in vein as

none of them were able to break the sticks tied together. The farmer then made them aware of

how they are the living representations of the sticks, weak alone but indestructible together.

If one really wants to develop or flourish women’s standing in society, one should realize that

it’s imperative that women are united. Hence this concept of women's savings group seems very

important today. Many women have now become more capable, better trained, more confident to

run themselves, family or/and business. This has become possible because of the establishment

of women's savings groups. The institute has set up 50 women savings groups so far with the

setting up of a Women's Savings Group Federation next on the agenda.

Jeevan Jyot and Gyan Deep Established the Women's Savings Group Federation.

about the health of children, thought about organizing a competition which would help identify

For the last 10 years, the organisation has been working on issues related to health and food for

women and children. Awareness programs are frequently organized on this topic. This

admission applications to participate in the competition. There were as many as 200 entrances.

According to the condition, the parents whose child has completed immunization with their

child should be of the same weight as per their nutrition. 30 children who have completed all

these conditions have been selected by age, neatness / cleanliness, intellectual capacity.

A selection committee was formed for selection of the participants. In this, the two age groups, 1

to 3 and 3 to 6 were decided. This round was completed on 12 November 2017.

The main competition was held on 14 Nov 2017.

The chief guests, Mr. James Goose, Adv. Bhosale (Chairman of Lions Clubs Chembur,

Activists of the organisation gathered during the inauguration of the organisations office.

Our organisation has been working in Mankhurd area for a considerable number of years. When

there was no office for the organisations employees to work from, it caused a lot of problems.

Mankhurd being a relatively poor area comprised largely of domestic workers who weren’t very

well informed of their rights and duties often leaned on better informed people to help them.

Without an office, work had to be done from home. The employees of the institution would often

have people coming to their houses seeking help. It was great hassle as problems such as the

absence of the employees or personal household work began to crop up. Work wasn’t very

efficient and this further raised the need for an office.

The office was the result of 13 years of assiduous work, the organisation tread on a rugged path

to get to the point. The journey wasn’t easy but it was helped greatly by the altruism of

organisations such as UPL and Renovate India. UPL is a colossal funder for the advancement of

the project that is to empower women.

The program started at 2:00 pm. The chief guest of the program was Ms. Armati Irani (State

Secretary of the Domestic Workers Association). Mr. Sambodhi Kamble (Ex.Corporator), Mr.

Sunil Gaikawad (world vision), Mr. Anant Jadhav (Secretary Mahatma Jyotiba Phule CHS) and

Mr. Alok Kadam (Co-founder Renovate India), were the other prominent guests present.

Organizers Ms. Suvudha Khair and Ms. Tejaswi Karnik compered the program. Through this

formulation, the listeners were given information about the organisations work so far and its

future goals. All of the major guests expressed their views and wished the organisation the best

in their future endeavors. The office was inaugurated by the chief guest, Ms. Armati Irani and

Mr. Sambodhi Kamble.

Radha Suman kumar Nagelli was a trainee who was apprehensive

about her skills and the training as she realized that finding job was

hard. With incessant diligent efforts from the organisation, she was

able to find a job as a cleaner at the Kurla branch of Kotak Mahindra

Bank. She is more than satisfied with job as she is not only able to

rake in sufficient money but also receives benefits such as PF and

health insurance.

Amedi Makhumalli Bano was woman who faces adversities due to

her religion. The Muslim community had strong restrictions which

acted as a barrier that prevented her from working. When sought out,

the organisation complied with her and put in strenuous effort to help

her. There were two major problems at hand, one to get her a job and

the other to ensure that it was done without upsetting the Muslim

community. At the end of the toil, the organisation was able to find

her a job that pays her Rs. 12000 a month.

Unsurprisingly, we faced a lot of challenges during the course of our work. Trainees weren’t

even slightly aware of many things. We also faced problems of waning enthusiasm. Trainees

were highly energetic at the beginning, but soon started to refrain from attending. The women

couldn’t grip the information quickly. A lot of patience and dedication was required to help the

women understand the intricacies.

The coming year the organisation plans to work on the same project as it did during the year

2017-18. The project that looked to raise economic standard of women domestic workers and

objective of which was to develop home management skills and to render dignified job to 300

women domestic workers through trainings will be aimed to be completed for the year 2018-19

as well. The project will focus on the women of M-ward, Mumbai. To implement this idea

VSMVM would need help from a CSR who would provide financial support to implement this

project.

VSMVM is also planning to start a marketing and selling centre in M-East ward, Mumbai. So, it

will be platform to SHGs’ women to market and sell their products by 2018.
