1. INTRODUCTION

The Indian Institute of Information Technology Surat was established in Private-Public-

Partnership (PPP) mode by Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.

Accordingly, Government of Gujarat, Gujarat Narmada Fertilizer Company Ltd., Gujarat Gas Ltd.,

and Gujarat Informatics Ltd, agreed through a Memorandum of Association with Government of

India to be the partners in the establishment and progression of the Institute to be started in Surat.

The legal framework (MoA and MoU) for the establishment and administration of the institute

was developed by mentoring Institute, Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology

(SVNIT), Surat, in consultation with MHRD of Government of India, Higher Education Department

of Government of Gujarat and the representatives of industrial partners.

2. ACADEMIC YEAR 2017-18

The Institute began its academic journey in June 2017 with SVNIT, Surat as its Mentoring Institute.

SVNIT is an Institute of National Importance having infrastructure required to nurture the new-

born Institute. The Director of SVNIT along with his colleagues took the responsibility of starting

the academic activities during July 2017.

The Governing Body (GB) of the institute was formed to look-into establishment and

administration of IIIT-Surat. The chairman and members of first GB is given below:

The institute started its academic activities, during July 2017, in the campus of SVNIT by offering

B.Tech. course in Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) and Electronics & Communication

Engineering (ECE). The admission for the courses was through JoSAA, and admission process was

assisted by SVNIT officials. Following committee was constituted for managing the administrative

and academic activities of IIIT Surat.

The responsibility of preparing syllabi was completed by the faculty of Department of

Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) and Department of Computer Science &

Engineering (CSE) of SVNIT. This whole process was coordinated by Dr. M.A. Zaveri, Associate

Professor in Department CSE of SVNIT. He was instrumental in steering the academic activities at

the initial stages. Subsequently, the responsibility was shouldered by Dr. (Smt.) Roopa Mehta,

Associate Professor in the Department of CSE of SVNIT. Mentor Director, Prof. S.R. Gandhi,

Director of SVNIT-Surat, took the responsibility of administration of IIIT – Surat, and constituted

the following committee to assist him in the administration of IIIT.

A current account was opened in the name of Indian Institute of Information Technology

Surat, in the State Bank of India, SVRCET Branch in SVNIT campus for managing the funds of the

Institute. The fee collected from students was deposited in the same account. For smooth running

of the IIIT-Surat, SVNIT provided various support systems such as classrooms, laboratories, Library,

hostel, medical facility, student welfare, gymkhana and sports sections. These facilities were

offered to IIIT students at par with students of SVNIT.

The Dean Students’ Welfare and hostel wardens supervised living comforts in boys’ and girls’

hostels. Deans and Faculties of SVNIT steered continuous evaluation of academic performance of

IIIT- students. The admission status during 2017-18 is given below:

The academic activities were managed by the faculty designated as course coordinators

and they were responsible for dissemination of knowledge as well as continuous evaluation of

students in the first and second semesters. The academic rules and regulations of SVNIT were

adopted for academic evaluation of IIIT students. The list of course coordinators is given below:

Students in first semester have participated in many competitions conducted by various

organizations and those conducted by SVNIT. Students also participated in many extra-curricular

activities conducted by SVNIT and won many laurels. National programmes like Independence

Day, Republic Day and Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti were celebrated together with SVNIT.

Distribution of TABs:

Government of Gujarat, every year distributes TAB to the students studying in all engineering

colleges in the State of Gujarat at a very nominal cost of Rs.1000/- per student. The amount was

collected and submitted to Government of Gujarat, and tabs were distributed to the students

studying in first semester B.Tech.

3. ACADEMIC YEAR 2018-19

The academic year 2018-19 started as per schedule mentioned in the academic calendar declared

in the beginning of the academic year. All events of IIIT Surat are time synchronized with that of

SVNIT, as the academic activities are correlated with that of SVNIT. The academic calendar is given

below:

The beginning of the second academic year was marked with the admission of students for the

first semester B.Tech. There was no change in the number of seats and fee structure for the first-

year B.Tech. programme. The admission process was completed as per the stipulated time fixed

by Central Seat Allotment Board (CSAB). The academic year began on 16thJuly, 2018. The Mentor

Director organized one-day orientation programme for the new entrants of IIIT-Surat. The hostel

accommodation and other facilities were accorded for the students of IIIT. The category wise

The newly appointed Director of IIIT-Surat, Prof. J.S. Bhat, reported for duty on 31st July,

2018. A separate office of IIIT was established in the 6th floor of New CRC Building of SVNIT. Along

with the academic activities, priority was given to the registration of IIIT-Surat Society and the IIIT-

Surat Trust. The registration of the society and the trust was completed on 26-09-2018.

After completion of registration of the Society and Trust of IIIT-Surat, an application was

submitted to District Collector of Surat for the allotment of land for developing the infrastructure

of IIIT-Surat. Earlier, site selection committee had visited and considered the land near Dumas, in

the city of Surat. Because of unconnected pieces of land, fresh request was submitted to District

Collector to show suitable land in other locations. The District Collector initialized the process and

showed a land in Kholvad village in Kamrej Taluka of Surat district. The location is within the city

limits and near to Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway. Subsequently, Site Selection

Committee (SSC), nominated by MHRD visited the proposed site and recommended the site for

the development of infrastructure of IIIT-Surat. The recommendation of SSC was approved by

competent authority. The District Collector sent the recommendation, in favour of allotment of

the land of area 28.74 acres in Kholwad to IIIT-Surat, to the Revenue Department of Government

of Gujarat.

In the second meeting of Governing Body held on 13-11-2018, GB approved the proposal of

recruitment of faculty and non-faculty staff in IIIT Surat. Contractual faculty was appointed in the

month of Jan. 2019. Two contractual faculty in ECE department and one contractual faculty in CSE

department reported for duty for a period of 11 months from the date of joining. Ministerial staff

were appointed through an outsourcing agency approved by Government of Gujarat. Contractual

staff reported for duty in the month of Feb/March, 2019.

The first meeting of the finance committee was held on 31-05-2019. The audited report of

accounts of 2017-18 and 2018-19 were presented. Financial assistance for establishing IIIT-Surat

as well as to meet the recurring expenses, a fund of Rs.5.0 crore was released by MHRD through

PFMS during 2018-19.

STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENTS

Students of IIIT-Surat participated in various academic competitions held in SVNIT and other

institutions in various parts of the country and have won laurels. Some of the events and results

are given below:

a) Arnav Rupde, Shubham Tayal, Kevin Lakhani (2ndYear B.Tech.) participated in the ACM-

International Collegiate Programming Contest Regionals at Kanpur-Kolkata Site.

b) Aditya Mangal: 1stPrize Line Tracker at HERTZ 3.0 organized by SVNIT,1st Prize Robomania

in SMPC 2018. Internship: In Sales and Marketing at Haier. Workshops: Mobile Robotics,

Sixth Sense Robotics, IOT in IIT DELHI, Entrepreneurship Workshop in IIT Bombay. Projects:

Home Automation, Automation Robots.

c) Aditya Jaiswal: Android app for IIIT Surat class materials named Curricula, available on Play

Store to download, Android app that can track SVNIT bus in campus, MCQs UI for India GK

app on Play Store.

d) Shanu Sharma: 5th Rank in CodeWars (SVNIT+IIIT) and 2nd in II Year (SVNIT+IIIT), All India

Rank:34 and Chandigarh Region Rank:6 in KVS-Regional Mathematics Olympiad(out of

15000 selected candidates),National Participant at 43rd JNNSME held at Jalandhar Punjab

in 2015, National Participant at NCSC held at IIT- BOMBAY in 2015, National Participant

in 42 KVS Football held at Lucknow Region. WorkShops: 'A' grade in Workshop

'Introduction to Scientific Computing using Python' organized by FOSSEEIIT BOMBAY in

2017.Current Interests:Currently pursuing Machine Leaning and Neural Networks courses

offered by Stanford University, Competitive Coding (@shanu5544 on Codeforces,

e) Ashutosh Khedwal: Workshops: Blockchain Workshop conducted by Microsoft at MSU

Baroda, Startup idea at Entrepreneurship Summit 2018 at IIT Bombay; A startup idea at

Entrepreneurship Summit 2018 at IIT Bombay, Robotics Workshop conducted by Electrical

Department of NIT Surat.

f) Aditya Kumar: 2nd out of 4 teams in IIIT-SURAT in Pre-Qualification Round for ACM-ICPC.

Continuously participates in Coding Events on various Online Judges (handle-@aditya1226

on Code forces, Hackerearth, Hackerrank).

g) Hardik Awasthi: Stood among the Top-100 in CODATHON, the Inter NIT Coding Contest

organized by ISTE Students' Chapter, MANIT hosted at Hacker Earth from 15/01/2019 to

22/01/2019.

h) Ishaan Gohil (1stYear): Winner at Various District and National Level Table Tennis

Tournaments held in Surat and Gujarat.

i) Tushar Saini: Regular participation in Competitive Coding Competitions such as Inter-NIT

Codathon, Hackerearth Circuits, CodeWars and Brainstorm.

j) Darshil Lalchandani: Participant at National Science Olympiad by SOF and secured a rank

of 200 in the Zone and Global Ranking of 3086.

k) Hitesh Lalchandani: Developed a Messaging APP for Android Smartphones 'Sandesh'.

l) Pratyush Gupta (II-Year):1st Prize in Poster Making Competition organized by Swami

Vivekananda Bhawan on the Birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda,2nd Prize in art

Competition organized by Nehru Bhawan on Basant Panchmi.

m) Devanshu Yadav: 1st Prize Instrumental Music Category Kashish 2018.

The Institute was registered in the National Scholarship Portal in the month of October 2018, and

SUPPORT FOR STUDENT STARTUP AND INNOVATION POLICY(SSIP):

Government of Gujarat has developed Student Start-up & Innovation Policy (SSIP) for encouraging

the innovation and start-up cognizance of the students in technical institutes. Under this

programme of Higher Education Department of Government of Gujarat, Institute submitted a

detailed proposal of projects of students, which can be channelled to industrial production. The

projects are based on innovative ideas of the students. The students will get financial assistance

from Government of Gujarat to work with the proposed project. It is expected to receive a grant

of Rs. 5.0 Lakh per year from the Gujrat Government. Using this Institute will develop an

electronics lab with facilities to carry out the project in the time line mentioned in the project. This

activity will boost the interest of students in start-up activities and innovative thinking.

Research Publications:

The research activities in the Institute were focused in the field of digital signal processing and
