CHAIRMAN’S FOREWORD 2018-2019
On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am pleased to present my report for 2019. It has been another successful year for the Club. We have continued to upgrade and improve our facilities for our members and guests. Further improvements on the drawing board will continue with our future vision for the Club. Our Bowlers:
We are extremely proud of all our bowlers who participated this year in this great game we play! Thank you to everyone who participated and it has certainly been another great year of bowling.
• Our talented women bowlers were successful in winning another flag to add to their
achievements and congratulations to all for another competitive year and
outstanding bowling.
• Our men also certainly put in a great effort this year with all teams very competitive
during the season with vast improvements seen under the guidance of Daniel Hill,
our Bowls Co-ordinator.
For further information please refer to our Bowls Co-ordinator’s report.
Our Club:
This year we continued with improvements in line with our future vision. Innovations were trialed and implemented and they have proved successful. Michael Gray (our Chief Executive Officer) together with the Board continued to review the Club’s operations, focusing on listening to our members to improve facilities.
This year saw some more quality upgrades and improvements including:
• Numerous internal and maintenance changes such as the purchase of additional poker
machine entitlements.
• Technology upgrades including a major security upgrade to enhance security for staff
and patrons.
• Upgrades to entertainment and bingo facilities.
• Improvements and increase in both raffles and member giveaways.
• Introduction of the Inflatables on the Green, school holiday entertainment which has
proved very successful.
• Works currently being undertaken to provide all members easy access from the car
park, with larger self-opening doors and ramps being installed
• A new outdoor entertainment area is planned for later in the year and we are currently awaiting final approval before work can commence.
Our Board remains committed and focused on making decisions that keep this Club viable. We will continue to promote the interest of all members both social and bowling. We will also continue to support for our community and to also be an employer of choice for our staff.
The Club’s vision is to ensure that our club becomes the bowls Club of choice for our area. We welcome new ideas from everyone at any time!

CHARLESTOWN BOWLING CLUB LIMITED CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT
Another year has quickly come and gone and the club has had another strong result. Our key revenue areas of Bar, Bistro and Gaming have all experienced continued growth which is shown in the summary below. 2017-18 2018-19 $ +/- % +/-
Bar Sales 1,883,282 2,014,351 131,609 7.00%
Bistro Sales 1,790,909 2,037,196 246,287 13.75%
Memberships 7,214 7,400 186 2.54%
PM revenue 2,741,930 3,170,508 428,578 15.63%
Total Revenue 7,077,131 7,966,321 889,190 12.56%
These revenue increases are above the industry averages and enable us to continue to invest back into the Club to maintain a modern and appealing venue for our members and guests. Our bar and bistro sales hit the $2 million mark for the first time which is a great effort for a club of our size. Last financial year has seen the following improvements to our Club:
1. Upgrade of the function room lights and audio system. 2. New website and launch of the Club Charlestown brand. 3. 6 additional poker machine licences. 4. Additional heaters in the outdoor gaming room.
Management and the Board have also looked at how we can diversify the business. Feasibility and concept plans were undertaken to build an 80-room hotel on site. Costings for this project were greater than expected and more work needs to be undertaken to make this project viable.
The second area of development looked at was the turning of the Club’s driveway into an additional outdoor area comprising of a playground, café, bar, additional toilets and covered sitting. This project has been approved by the Board and a development application (DA) has been lodged with Lake Macquarie City Council. It is hoped that this DA will be approved in the near future with work commencing in November 2019.
The Club is very fortunate to have great people working here. To all our managers, supervisors and staff, I thank you for your continued hard work. The Club has grown in the last few years and we now have 64 full-time, part-time and casual staff working for the Club.
To Jeff Davis and his Board of Directors, I thank them for their continued support and guidance. They work tirelessly in the best interests of the Club whilst being a sounding board for our members.
Finally, to all our members and visitors, thank you for coming to the Club and being a part of our growth. Our members define the Club, they create the culture and atmosphere which makes the Club a great place to attend.
Regards
Michael Gray Chief Executive Officer

CHARLESTOWN BOWLING CLUB LIMITED
AGM Report – Bowls Co-Ordinator
It is with pleasure I present my 2018-19 lawn bowls report. What a year it has been on the green
with our club proving to be a force to be reckoned with in many different events.
Thank you to all players who made themselves available during the pennant season. Our men
enjoyed some successes with the Mid-Week 1 grade making the Semi Finals and the Saturday 2
grade being the runner-up in the race to the flag. Our Women once again proved they are the
team to beat in the Lake Macquarie region with our 1 grade team winning the District and Region
flags and running 3rd in the State Finals. The Women’s 3 grade also performed well being the
runner-up at district level. Well done to all involved during the pennant season in all capacities.
You have all done yourselves and the club proud.
The Tigers also flexed their muscles in district events with Daniel Hill, David Collins, Scott
Thoroughgood and Warren Shipley winning the District 4’s. That quartet will play the state fours
at the end of September. Good Luck guys. Our Women also performed well with Lyn Genders
and Kay Shuttlewood winning the district and regional senior pairs, Kathryn Clerke, Raweang
Namutwong and Gayle Gannon winning the district and regional triples and Karleen Gemmell,
Robin Gardner, Helen Sanderson and Laurel Faint winning the district and regional senior 4’s.
These 3 teams competed in the state finals in early September and although no titles were won
the ladies gave a very good account of themselves and should be very proud of the way they
played. Well done to all involved.
Congratulations to all the members who were selected to represent the Club in all the various
representative sides for Zone 2, the NSW Bowling Arm and the NSW State sides.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many wonderful members who have lent their
assistance to the club to help with all the events that we stage. The support from our members is
incredible and without the help of all volunteers throughout the year we would not be able to put
on events with success like we do.
To our games committee of Daryl McKinnon, Joe Clement, Phil Garry, Fred Verschoor, Milton
Rigby, Jim Cowan and John Sanderson, thanks for all your efforts over the past 12 months.
Thank you also to all of our umpires who give up their time to help officiate events throughout the
year including pennants, club games and tournaments.
In closing I would also like to thank Chairman Jeff, CEO Michael and the Board of Directors for
their continued support of Lawn Bowls and making our club the envy of others and our fantastic
group of staff that go out of their way to make all our bowling members and visitors feel more
than welcome whenever they are in the club.
