This list reflects board membership and affiliations for fiscal year ending June 30, 2017.

Since 1985, Alameda County Community Food Bank has been at the forefront of hunger-relief efforts in the Bay Area.

Built on a reputation of bold decision-making and innovative programming, we’re proud to have established ourselves as a leader both locally and nationally. From being the first food bank in the nation to stop distributing soda; to creating the national blueprint for CalFresh (food stamp) outreach efforts; to being named the 2016 Food Bank of the Year by Feeding America, we are proud and humbled to be recognized for our contributions to the health and prosperity of our community.

In the summer of 2017, ACCFB made a different kind of bold move by unveiling the first new logo in our 32-year history. While our previous one served us well, it no longer reflected what and who we have become. Our new logo says an abundance about our organization today:

…The vibrancy reflects our bold approach—because solving a problem as profound as hunger means taking steps that stand out.

…The multi-dimensionality represents our evolution beyond an organization that only distributes food, to the comprehensive and interconnected initiatives described in this report.

…The balance demonstrates the importance of equity and inclusion in our work.

Our new logo reflects who we are now, and where we’re going. We’ve spent three decades changing and adapting to meet community need. Today, we’re ready and energized, excited to take on whatever the future holds.

Yet, this is about much more than a logo. It’s about deep passion and unwavering commitment. It’s about bringing our best selves, every day. It’s about the vision of no child, adult or senior worrying about where his or her next meal will come from.

None of this, of course, happens without you. And for that, we are abundantly grateful. Thank you for all you do to make our work possible.

GROWING & EXPANDING IN NEW WAYSThis year, we dove into challenging and creative ways to deepen our work.

Our member agencies are pillars of our neighborhoods. Recently, we rolled out a new process to better understand our agencies’ capabilities, and to find ways to bolster our collective work. Called the Partner Engagement Program, this initiative has helped us identify new resources and strategies to better serve our clients. For example, we provided 16 grants for agencies to make facility improvements, and provided 24 agencies with new food handling equipment.

Like our member agencies, schools are part of the foundation of our neighborhoods, providing essential resources for families. From early childhood centers to universities, we expanded our programming in schools because we know that having enough nutritious food is critical for learning and growing. Our Mobile Pantry truck now provides food at 20 schools and community centers. Addressing the issue of student hunger, we also helped develop seven food pantries on college campuses such as CSU East Bay and UC Berkeley, and increased outreach to college students who are eligible for CalFresh.

That wasn’t the only way we expanded our CalFresh efforts. We launched FoodNow.net, and Spanish-language ComidaAhora.net, which lets people easily check if they pre-qualify for CalFresh (formerly known as food stamps). The sites also make it easier for community members to find groceries at nearby member agencies.

Finally, in partnership with the Alameda County Social Services Agency, we began mailing pre-populated CalFresh applications to households who are already enrolled in MediCal. This pilot—the first of its kind in the state—streamlines the application process for tens of thousands of low-income households. While final reports are still pending, almost 1,200 applications were returned this year, resulting in hundreds of clients receiving CalFresh food assistance.

HEALTH & HUNGERNutritious food is the foundation of good health. Yet, healthy foods are often unavailable or too expensive for low-income children, adults, and seniors.

This hurts the wellness of our community, especially when 1 in 5 client households have at least one member with a chronic disease, such as diabetes or high blood pressure. That’s why we’re working with health care partners to increase access to healthy and nutritious foods.

This year, ACCFB reached the end of the FAITH-DM Clinical Intervention Trial, which examined the effects of hunger relief on low-income patients managing their type 2 diabetes. As one of three food banks nationwide participating in this groundbreaking effort, we provided 120 study participants with enough groceries to make 56,000 diabetic specific meals, and conducted 30 nutrition and self-management classes. Results will be published in 2018 with efforts already underway to implement key learnings.

Headed by our Research and Nutrition teams, our Food Bank also took part in a multi-disciplinary study called Food as Medicine to help pre-diabetic adolescents and their families. Over the course of the program, we delivered 500 free, diabetic-friendly food packages, supporting both the nutritional needs of the patients and their families. As a result of these efforts, participants stated they were more likely to purchase diabetic-friendly foods. However, many also reported that they couldn’t afford those healthy options, which underscores the ongoing need for programming that increases access to nutritious food.

Other initiatives in FY17 included a pilot program to distribute food at two Children’s Hospital Oakland locations. We also offered training and support to our member agencies to build their capacity to provide healthier foods and to promote nutritious eating to their clients.

These programs demonstrate our unique ability to serve our clients, while also serving as a valuable public health partner. We continue to seek new ways to strengthen our health care programming because we know a nourished community is healthier, more productive, better able to learn, safer, and more economically stable.

ENDING POVERTYFood is a basic human right. And while we are distributing food in unprecedented quantities in Alameda County, we know we cannot end hunger without working to end poverty.

This is why bold advocacy remains a key tenet of our work. Our advocacy team works year-round with state and national coalitions, food justice organizations, and through grassroots lobbying campaigns to amplify the voices and stories of our community members living in poverty.

This year, we were the only food bank in a statewide coalition that successfully advocated for an expanded state Earned Income Tax Credit. This helped an additional 1 million low-income families throughout the state, particularly women and children of color—and provides $3.8 million in additional benefits in Alameda County. Our efforts also helped pass a bill (AB214) to reduce hunger among college students through CalFresh enrollment, and successfully quadrupled state funding for food banks to $8 million. These advocacy efforts amounted to an additional 3 million meals for Alameda County residents. We also worked to undo recession-era cuts to the Supplemental Security Income program that supports thousands of elderly and disabled community members.

The year also brought a new political climate, and unprecedented threats to key safety net programs that keep our community healthy, housed, and nourished. Our Day of Unity and Action, which took place on Inauguration Day, brought together community members, volunteers, and staffers from state and local legislators’ offices for an afternoon of service, learning, and involvement in the legislative process. The energy surrounding that day continues to fuel our advocacy efforts.

Throughout the year—whether it’s demanding dignity for low-income seniors or speaking up for universal school lunch—advocating for a more just future continues to drive all pillars of our work.

COMMUNITYPerhaps the single most important change when we updated our logo last summer was the decision to make the word “Community” stand out.

It’s not just the word that’s bold. It’s the acknowledgment that without you—our partners, contributors, supporters, and clients—we simply wouldn’t exist as an organization.

Our strength to carry out our mission and our strength to achieve the bold goal of providing 90 million meals is fueled by each of you. By a 6-year-old who donated his birthday gifts to make sure his classmates had healthy food. By a high schooler whose elaborate haunted house generated thousands of meals for our community. By clients whose resolve inspires us every day and whose voices drive our mission. By foundations who see in us the innovation and passion to see our vision through.

By companies that not only provide grants to fund our programs, but also resources like trucks and volunteers to make them happen.

And of course, the 18,087 volunteers who contributed time equivalent to 51 additional staff members this last year. You come in groups, big or small, to sort food in our warehouse. You come regularly as individuals to help in our offices and at events. You serve on our Board of Directors. You offer professional skills that help us grow in new and exciting ways.

For years, Alameda County Community Food Bank has worked to redefine what a food bank can be. We are evolving to change lives and achieve our mission of a hunger-free community. We are able to do this because of you, our Food Bank community.

FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

Note 1: Feeding America, the national food bank network, valued donated food commodities at $1.73 per pound, and USDA food commodities at $1.52 per pound for FY17.

Note 2: The Food Bank recognizes donated and USDA commodities as a contribution and inventory. Inventory is expensed when food is distributed. The increase in net assets is due to an increase in temporarily restricted revenue to be released in future years.
