PRESIDENT’S REPORT It has once again been a true honour and privilege to serve the ATCA as your President for another season.
Until being out STUMPED by COVID-19, we had witnessed a wonderful season of highly competitive cricket with many highlights right through the various grades aided by some excellent weather, with only two Saturdays throughout the six months being a complete washout. Sadly, the Board of Management had to make the heartbreaking but rightful decision to call off our finals series, acting as a responsible Association on behalf of the wider community. Congratulations to all teams that finished minor premiers and therefore declared PREMIERS of each grade.
Fortunately, our junior sections managed to complete their finals before the season’s abandonment. A highlight of these games for me were the large crowds that witnessed these young players in action at the Fulham, Grange and Brighton Ovals, where the play was of a high standard. At Under 14, 16 and 18 level the challenge is to retain their interest, commitment and enthusiasm for our great summer game, and I plead with parents and coaches of all clubs with junior teams to keep encouraging their teenagers to graduate into senior cricket. Being in a non-contact team environment sport brings many benefits.
It has been another tough year for our umpires with dwindling numbers, but although small in numbers they were high in quality and I witnessed a great sense of “togetherness” amongst their fraternity. Congratulations to stalwart Doug French OAM, who was recognized for his outstanding service to the ATCUSA at their Annual General Meeting last August. Special commendations to Adam Elliott and Graham Wood on being named “Umpires of the Season”; Grant Porter (Most Improved); and Sasha Pazeski (Best 1st Year Umpire). The challenge of recruiting new blood into the fold continues to be ongoing and of high importance.
An innovation for the Association in 2019-20 was our first tentative foray into social media via our newly designed Facebook page. Another great way to give more exposure to our clubs and players alike as we look to expand and explore more opportunities in this area. The potential growth is unlimited, while a number of teams have also introduced live scoring which also brings untold advantages to the followers of ATCA cricket. Hopefully all clubs in our higher grades, in the very near future will adopt this excellent tool to bring our games into the lounge rooms of our “stay at home supporters”.
Our SAMCA Cup results in our male Under 12, 14 and 16’s were once again the pride of the Association, winning all three divisions for the second consecutive year, while our Under 16 girls’ team won two of their four games and gained valuable match experience - special thanks to all the appointed coaches. Sadly, the senior divisions of this competition were abandoned due to lack of commitment by one of the other Associations, and its future must now be in some doubt.
I wish to thank the Board of Management sincerely along with our Executive Officer, David Heyzer for their support, service and commitment with the hard work of steering the direction of the ATCA into the future. They have focused on placing our member clubs at the heart of every decision, because any future growth will be built on trust, service and the spirit of being part of this large cricket community. The continued support of every club is imperative. Our clubs are the bedrock of our game as they give weekly opportunities to young and old to participate – the ones who nurture our stars of the future as they go on onto higher standards of cricket.
As I move around the various grounds, I am captivated by the volunteers that help run the teams. I see lots of self- motivated people doing great things for their clubs and no doubt the challenge is getting younger people involved to help run club land. Perspectives are so much different today, work life is different, social life is different as the 18-35 year olds seem to be more time poor than 20 years ago. Who are going to run our clubs when the current generation is too old? Can we identify our next club Chairman, Secretary or Treasurer? Without younger members willing to fulfil these roles, clubs run the risk of becoming detached from its player members when committees are full of older personnel.
Congratulations to all personal and club award winners of the ATCA, and special mentions to the Gepps Cross Cricket Club on winning the South Australian Cricket Association Community Cricket Club of the Year and to John Biggs from the Woodville South Cricket Club who completed fifty consecutive seasons of active playing service for his club - two wonderful achievements.
As I write this report our immediate playing future is still very much unclear due to the pandemic, so I plead with everyone to be patient as we ride out these uncertain times. While we would all love for season 2020-21 to commence on October 10, the health and wellbeing of everyone is of the highest importance. Things may be different for a time, we may be competing with football codes for players and grounds, clubs may lose sponsorships due to the economic downturn and we may have to play a shortened season. If we show a “spirit of cooperation” together we can work through all these different issues as they arise. Here is hoping for another excellent summer of cricket ahead, and I look forward to catching up with lots of regular community cricket supporters, hopefully in the not too distant future. Richard Haby
President ATCA
CHAIRMAN’S REPORT The Adelaide Turf Cricket Association had a successful 2019-20 season, up to the conclusion of the minor rounds. Unfortunately, all senior finals had to be cancelled due to the COVID 19 pandemic which has swept through Australia. It was a hard decision for the Board to make, but we had to be guided by the health authorities. As a result, it was decided to award the premierships in all grades to the teams that finished top at the end of the minor round. My congratulations to those teams. Fortunately, the Junior and the Twenty/20 competitions were completed prior to the cancellations taking effect. Both competitions were again well supported and keenly contested. Congratulations to all grand final winners. Both the Senior and Junior Award Nights also became victims of the pandemic. The award winners for both competitions were posted on the ATCA website and social media. Congratulations to all winners and many thanks to the senior players, junior players and their parents, and all associated with the clubs. The Association continues to be in a strong financial position, and thank you to all our sponsors. We appreciate your generous support. Our sponsorship committee is in the process of securing further sponsorships for the coming season. I urge all clubs to continually support our sponsors. The Board is still concerned with the number of compliance issues occurring during the season. Sportsmanship is the key word in cricket and it appears that some players are still not observing the “Spirit of Cricket” Policy. Senior players should set an example to Junior players progressing through the grades. The Umpires and Scorers Association has had a change of leadership, with Doug French retiring as President. Doug has given a great many years of service to cricket and has received many awards, including the Order of Australia Medal. I wish Doug all the very best for the future and thank him very much for his support. Congratulations to his successor, Konrad Date and I look forward to a strong working relationship with the Umpires and Scorers Association. My thanks to our Executive Officer, David Heyzer for your very efficient administration of the Association and his excellent working relationships with SACA, SAMCA and other Community Cricket Associations. Thank you also to our Administrative Assistant, Larraine Markesinis for your valued support. In closing, I sincerely thank our President, Vice President and all Board Members for their support and assistance throughout the season. We will continue to promote all forms of cricket, while encouraging new clubs and players to join our Association. Best wishes for the coming 2020-21 season.
Ron Barber Chairman
EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT
I submit for consideration the 2020 Adelaide Turf Cricket Association’s Annual Report, which summarises the season. In my tenth season as Executive Officer, I am proud to see the Association continue to grow despite facing new challenges, the most demanding of challenges to both Clubs and the Association no doubt is the COVID-19 Pandemic. This saw the whole finals series cancelled. In saying that, I believe cricket was lucky to avoid the issues other Winter sports have had to face over the last few months. I fear our clubs will feel the effect of COVID 19 this coming season where fundraising and sponsorship will prove to be a challenge and some of cricket’s greatest traditions are now under review. My annual gripe regarding the time spent dealing with player behaviour and other compliance issues, unfortunately continues to make the role of the Executive Officer difficult, with TOO MUCH of my time used in dealing with such matters, time which could be better utilized dealing with the day to day matters of the Association. A total of 56 clubs participated, fielding 158 senior men’s teams, 44 junior and 53 sub junior teams. The introduction of the sub junior competition in 2016/17 is proving to be very successful, with player numbers increasing each year. The Association has also seen the Twenty/20 competition continue to prosper with 72 teams participating. The Association with the help of SACA continues to grow women’s cricket with 9 ATCA clubs fielding teams in the Girls’ Strikers League. The senior women’s competition, in its third year, saw 10 clubs represented. To those 10 clubs, I thank you for your efforts and expect those clubs to reap the benefits in years to come. Payneham Cricket Club convincingly defeated Adelaide University Cricket Club in the 2019 grand final and Reynella Cricket Club were declared Premiers in the 2020 season. While I acknowledge the support of SACA in supporting the growth of women’s cricket within the ATCA it would be remiss of me to not show my appreciation to SAMCA Chairman, Andrew Caldwell. If not for his time and effort in coordinating the Association’s SAMCA Inter Association Girls’ competition, we would have struggled to field teams in this competition. While the Association has fully accepted Cricket Australia’s Junior Format for the U10 competition, it’s decision to reject the U12 Junior Format rules and continue to play off the standard pitch length is proving to be beneficial. This decision has seen an increase of playing numbers of 50% at U12 level over the last four seasons, I am certain this has justified our decision to reject the Cricket Australia format. The Association continues to have a strong and constant Board of Management consisting of 11 dedicated people that continue to support me in the advancement of the Association. I would like to thank Mr Ron Barber, Chairman; Mr Richard Haby, President; Mr Peter Smith, Treasurer; and Mr Jeff Emmel, Vice President for their continued guidance in the direction the Association is taking. I feel further comment is required on what is the most unpleasant of duties as Executive Officer, in dealing with players and clubs that continue to breach the ATCA Code of Conduct, resulting in 35 incidents investigated this season. My sincere thanks go to Greg Gade and his Compliance Committee for their assistance in this area. The volunteers who presided over these, often complex and challenging matters, should receive far more commendation. Simple words cannot do justice to their dedication shown in dealing with these matters. The Association continues its successful partnership with SACA, in the coordination and management of ATCUSA umpires. While the task to produce umpires for the entire top four grades continues to prove challenging, it is the clubs’ support we seek to improve umpiring numbers. My thanks go out to Daniel Goodwin, State Umpiring Leader who is responsible for carrying out this very challenging task. The Association continues to acknowledge the support it has received from the South Australian Cricket Association. The two Associations have formed an excellent working relationship over many years and I look forward to continuing to build a stronger link between both Associations. I would particularly like to thank SACA General Manager of Community Cricket, Mr Shane Bernhardt and Vanessa Walker for their guidance throughout the season.
My role of Executive Officer finds me travelling to various games of cricket where I have the pleasure of watching some fabulous games. What a Job! The most unfortunate lowlight was the inability to attend the semi and grand final games over the last 2 weekends in March. Congratulations to Ingle Farm District Cricket Club, who as minor premiers were awarded the A1 Premiership. Congratulations to Marion Cricket Club who took out the City Holden T/20 Division 1 Grand-Final defeating Unley Cricket Club at Karen Rolton Oval; and to all other teams in all Senior and Junior grades who have been recognised with Premierships.
This season’s Annual Senior Presentation night was cancelled, but we still need to acknowledge the major award winners being:
• Jeff Emmel Spirit of Cricket Award – Unley Cricket Club
• A1 Player of the Year – Mark Hanson – Pooraka Cricket Club
• ATCA Club of the Year – Adelaide University Cricket Club
• Club Secretary of the Year – Graham Wylie – Woodville South Cricket Club Congratulations must go to all other award winners recognised for the year. The Association once again dominated the Junior SAMCA Cup competitions, with the Association taking out the U12, U14 and U16 competition. Unfortunately, the U21 and Senior SAMCA competitions did not conclude, with the PDCA unable to field a team. My personal thanks go out to the senior coach, Steve Sykes; U21 coach, Gordon Smith; U16 coaches Tony Adams and Allan Sandery; U14 coach Jason Scroop; and U12 coach Kym Williams. Volunteers are the life blood of the Association and need to be appreciated and recognised. Sponsorship continues to be a focus, with the Association continuing to source additional income from this sector. The Association values our sponsors and would like to thank Kookaburra Sports, Fullhammer, JS Sports, Sports Centre and City Holden for their support during the year. The Association will be striving to further improve our returns from this avenue. I trust that clubs appreciate and support our sponsors. I also acknowledge the quality administrative assistance I received from Larraine Markesinis, her performance often extends beyond the scope of her duty statement and for that I am most grateful. In closing, I thank all the club officials for their contributions to cricket. I particularly thank the club secretaries for their efforts and I look forward to working with clubs again in season 2020/21. Thank you to all club personnel and Board Members that form the various ATCA sub-committees, your efforts are truly appreciated.
David Heyzer Executive Officer
ATCA MATCH OFFICIALS’ REPORT
Congratulations to all Match Officials who achieved their goals, reached milestones and had success during season 2019/20. While the end of the season was unfortunately cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there are still many accomplishments to reflect upon. The Match Officials preseason program started with winter sessions, the season launch, laws study nights and the annual seminar. The seminar was run across two days in September with 180 Match Officials in attendance and 14 presenters covering 17 sessions. Many other training and development opportunities were offered throughout the season which included the Behind the Bails evening where ICC Match Officials, Richard Kettleborough, Richard Illingworth, Michael Gough and Shawn Craig joined us to share their experiences and stories ahead of the Adelaide Test Match. Our Umpire Coaches also assisted with this development by continuing to assess umpires and provide feedback at matches throughout the season. The knowledge and experience that our coaches share with all umpires is very valuable and we thank them for their continued support. There were over 1,400 umpire appointments to matches in the ATCA competitions with 8 new umpires joining the Associations ranks. While unfortunately there were no major Semi Finals or Grand Finals played, special mention to the following umpires on their achievements:
• Michael Stanley: Reached a 350-match milestone
• Ross Chenoweth and James Gooch: City Holden Smash Division 1 T20 Final appointed umpires
• Duminda Kottahachchi and Wayne Graham: Women’s 1st Grade Final appointed umpires
• Grant Potter: Stephenson/Cocks Award for Most Improved Umpire
• Sasha Pazeski: Green/Ryan Award Best First Year Umpire
• Graham Wood and Adam Elliott: ATCUSA Umpires of the Year I would also like to acknowledge Daniel Goodwin, Catherine Brown, Mary Waldron and Craig Thomas for their diligent work throughout the season to ensure that they supported all Match Officials to the best of their ability. We look forward to season 2020-21 and continuing to work with ATCA and ATCUSA to provide further umpiring opportunities, training and development

COMPLIANCE REPORT
Every season when I sit down to write the Compliance Report, I’m confronted with the same dilemma, being no matter what I would like to report on, namely a de-escalation in reporting numbers, that is not the reality. This season the CEP had cause to adjudicate on some 25 cases, of which twelve were the recipients of either a reprimand or a one match ban, which was subsequently suspended. That means penalties ranging from single match bans to five-year match bans were handed out in the remaining 13 cases, this also did not include the handling of a racial vilification complaint involving a player and spectators, the latter being resolved via conciliation. The one pleasing fact was the continued decline in the playing of unregistered players by the clubs. This brings me to the obvious questions:
What is cricket - a competitive game played between two teams in a sporting atmosphere? Yes Is witty banter fine? Yes Is competitive cricket fine? Yes Is winning fun? Yes Is it a war between two teams and/or certain individuals who play with a lack of respect for both the game itself and the opposition? NO
If you broke down the number of reports over the last ten years then it would appear that the latter is the reason some individuals play the game. What brought last season’s total of indiscretions into focus, was the penalties handed down in the last round for players from the same team coming to blows on the actual field of play. The penalties handed out, reflect the seriousness of that incident with three players incurring penalties of 2 ½, 3 ½ and 5 ½ years respectively. The other constant is the matter of umpiring in the un-umpired grades especially as it relates to the giving, or in this instance the non-giving of LBW decisions. I could reel off a couple of paragraphs about what I think of this practice, probably have already in the past, but all I would like to say is that cheating achieves nothing, and if teams think it’s a way of dispensing justice then why bother to play the game. In fact, the CEP took a stand in that regard (although matter still subject to appeal), by handing out a two-match penalty and removing the game from the offending team as a result of the Captain, when umpiring, informing the opposition that they were not getting any LBW’s that afternoon. In other words, live by the sword, die by the sword. That’s enough of that, I again take this opportunity to acknowledge the support of the Association’s Executive Officer, David Heyzer and of my fellow Commissioners and Tribunal Members. In particular Don von Einem, Rajesh Singh, Shaun Mathieson, Adam Crichton, Mark Wishart, Mark Twiggs and Anthony Crocker for their continued assistance.

ADELAIDE TURF CRICKET ASSOCIATION INCORPORATED TREASURERS REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2020 Please find accompanying this report the financial statements for the ATCA to the 30 June 2020 The following comments are made in relation to the financial statements: -
• The 2019-2020 financial year has resulted in a net profit of $7,830 in comparison to the 12 months to the end of
June 2019 of net loss of $3,377.
• The ATCA is registered for GST and the results reflect returns after this is accounted for. Due to expected impact
COVID-19 will have on our clubs, the Board will be considering a discount to be applied to affiliation fees for 2020-
2021. The ATCA received an ATO COVID -19 cash boost of $10,000 and will receive further funds from this source
in 20-21; this will assist the Board in providing relief for clubs.
• Bank interest received on our investment was similar to last year. The ATCA continues to have $80,000 of ATCA
funds invested in a NAB term deposit account. The current term matures on 23 August 2020, when a further $439
interest will be credited to the ATCA cheque account. The ATCA chose to invest a further $15,000 in a 3-month
term deposit which will result in further $33 interest credited into the cheque account on the 7 August 2020.
• Management of debtors is an important aspect, with the outstanding debtor at 30 June since finalised. In 2018-19
a Provision for Doubtful Debt was raised, due to the ATCA seeking legal action against Beastwear for breach of
contract. The Board acting in support of its Clubs, sought retribution from this supplier, but has now decided to
not pursue further legal action. As a result, the Provision has been written off as a Bad Debt. The ATCA received
Marriott repayments, which resulted in $2,990 paid for this financial year. The ATCA has received a total of
$19,985 from the Fines Enforcement Unit.
• The Association values our sponsors and thanks Kookaburra Sports, Fullhammer, JS Sports, Sports Centre and City
Holden for their support during the year. The Board will be striving to ensure funding from this avenue provides
benefits for the organisation. Support was received from SACA to assist with costs associated with the SAMCA
junior inter Association competition.
• Operating expenditure decreased by $9,465 compared to last year. Allowing for the Beastwear debt that was
listed as a doubtful debt in 18-19, it is effectively a small increase in operating expenditure. The cost of the legal
process has been offset by other savings; some as a result of the COVID-19 situation. The Board also made a
decision to provide helmet rebates, in view of the helmet policy; this is listed as an ‘other expense’ of $9,419. The
control of expenditure remains an important focus for the Board & Administration.
• The ATCA continues its long Association with the ATCU&SA. Expenditure on Umpires in the accounts now refers to
the agreement with SACA for providing the support for the training, direction and management of the umpiring
functions.
• Rent for the use of the ATCA office at Thebarton Oval was paid to the Adelaide Football League; thanks to the
support of the Adelaide Football League.
As at the 30 June 2020, the Board considers that the Association’s Funds are adequate in order to allow the Association to: • Operate during the off season;
• Operate with an appropriate level of Financial Security; and
• Take advantage of any opportunities that may arise.
