PRIMARY SPORT CHALLENGE

The NSW Premier's Primary Sport

Challenge engages students in sport

and physical activity, encouraging

them to lead healthy, active lifestyles.

The Challenge is officially conducted

in schools during Terms 2 and 3.

A class accumulates time spent over a

10 week period in a broad range of

sports and recreational pursuits during

lunchtime, in school sport programs,

class time, before and after school or in

weekend physical activity.

Students in Years K-2 are encouraged

to develop an understanding of the

value of physical activity and

establishing a healthy lifestyle from a

young age. Students in Years 3-6 are

challenged to accumulate time being

physically active, aiming to achieve

Bronze, Silver, Gold or Diamond

awards at the conclusion of the

Challenge period. Years 3-6 students

record their daily activity time in

individual log books to tally the blocks

of minutes spent being physically active

each week.

Weekly results are entered into the PSC

Tracker (the online system for tracking

and maintaining activity data) using the

school e-Wall Charts on an interactive

whiteboard.

Entering data on a regular (weekly)

basis has allowed students to review

their class performance and strive to

improve.

The many teachers and principals who

took on the role as 2017 Premier’s

Sporting Challenge Facilitators made

very significant contributions to the

implementation, promotion and

administration of the Challenge in their

schools.

Year 6 Student Leaders

357 schools requested student

leader badges, up from last year’s

total of 228 schools.

2,286 badges were requested, an

increase from 1,866 in 2016.

Student Awards

In 2017, 324,992 students completed

the NSW Premier's Primary Sport

Challenge.

All participating K-2 students received

a Gold Award. Students in Years 3-6

received either a Diamond, Gold,

Silver, Bronze or Encouragement

Award based on their individual

outcome or class average award level

achieved.

SECONDARY SPORT CHALLENGE

The NSW Premier’s Secondary Sport

Challenge encourages students in

Years 7-12 to increase their

participation in moderate to vigorous

activity through sport, recreation and

leisure activities, encouraging them to

lead healthy, active lifestyles. The

Challenge is officially conducted in

schools during Terms 2 and 3.

Teams or individual students record

time spent over a 10 week period in a

range of sports and recreational

pursuits. The accumulation of activity

time occurs during lunchtime, school

sport programs, class time, before and

after school or in weekend physical

activity.

Students are challenged to either

contribute time to achieve a team

average that determines the level of a

Bronze, Silver, Gold or Diamond

Awards at the conclusion of the

Challenge period or improve on their

own individual effort. Students record

their daily activity time in individual log

books or via the PSC app, tally the

minutes spent being physically active

each week and report the total to their

team leader or school facilitator.

Students’ weekly award levels are

recorded online in the PSC Tracker.

Those who have used the PSC app to

record their personal physical activity

have their data automatically

synchronized into the Tracker.

The team’s e-Wall Chart calculates a

cumulative average and identifies the

award level the team is tracking

towards. It is also an opportunity to

promote team ‘challenges’.

The many teachers and principals who

took on the role as 2017 Premier’s

Sporting Challenge Facilitators made

very significant contributions to the

implementation, promotion and

administration of the Challenge in their

schools.

Student Awards

75,635 secondary students completed

the Challenge in 2017, an increase

from 58,615 in 2016.

STAFF CHALLENGE

The Staff Challenge aims to encourage

and support school staff and state

office personnel to become more

active, more often by providing a

pedometer for recording time spent in

a broad range of sport and recreational

pursuits.

Importantly, the Staff Challenge

provides an avenue through which

school staff, as influential adults, can

model active, healthy lifestyle choices

to students.

In 2017, 9,114 staff members from 671

school and state office sites completed

the Staff Challenge.

Key reasons for taking part in the

Staff Challenge included:

whole school participation and

focus on healthy, active lifestyles

teachers as role models for

students

a free pedometer to motivate,

measure and gauge increases in

physical activity levels

a sense of “competition” between

staff.

GRANTS

In 2017, schools in the NSW Premier’s

Primary and Secondary Sport

Challenges received a grant to assist

in implementing local physical activity

and healthy lifestyle initiatives.

The funding model used to determine

school grants took into account the

levels of student participation, the

scale of operation of larger schools

involved in the program, and provided

small schools with an appropriate level

of funding support.

Use of the grants by schools included: • sport and physical activity

professional learning programs

• specialist support, for example, engagement of a sports coach

• venue hire

• student leadership initiatives

• learning community

initiatives and partner school strategies.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING and RESEARCH

PARTNERSHIPS

2017 has been a busy year as the PSC program responded to the launch of new

websites for both the Department of Education and School Sport Unit, higher

expectations around accessibility standards and the ongoing demand for

professional learning opportunities as all teachers come online for accreditation in

2018.

The Building Skills as a Sport Organiser series has a new format and delivery

mode enhancing participants’ learning experience and facilitating the registration and

reporting processes that are features of the new MyPL platform. Course 1 of the

series rolled out in November and the rest of the courses will come online shortly.

Support for schools to fulfil policy requirements and more easily access relevant

documents for the safe conduct of school sport and planned physical activity

prompted an update of the courses - Reviewing procedures for school sport and

Developing procedures for school sport. Schools can use course templates to

consult, consider and reflect on current practice and process before writing and

publishing a procedures document.

An exciting part of 2017 has been a collaboration with Hunter New England Health’s

research team as they prepare to launch PA4E1.

This program will encourage the completion of the procedures courses and

attendance at Resistance Training for Teens workshops as strategies for

secondary teachers to deliver quality PE and sport sessions. It is hoped the program

will build capacity for planned physical activity across the whole school community.

38 DoE high schools across the Hunter, North Coast, Central Coast and South West

Sydney areas have agreed to be part of the PA4E1 study.

Page 16: ANNUAL REPORT - app.education.nsw.gov.au

14

2017 Annual Report

Existing research team partnerships have continued and expanded during 2017.

Over 100 teachers attended workshops for Thinking while Moving in Maths and 7

teachers completed their training at the Highly Accomplished career stage to

become presenters of this very popular concept which will be expanded into English

lessons in 2018.

Burn to Learn, a new workshop in development for 2018 with the University of

Newcastle, looks to improve fitness and wellbeing amongst Stage 6 students as they

move through the rigour of senior studies and complete Crossroads requirements.

iPLAY has continued to expand its reach to NSW primary schools – over 600

teachers are actively involved in training and 50 have completed their registered

hours. The iPLAY website now includes information for families as well as providing

professional learning modules for the mentors, leaders and teachers who promote a

whole of school approach to improving student physical activity outcomes and

teacher confidence and competencies.

SPORT LEADERSHIP

The PSC Sport Leadership program

supports schools in developing

leadership opportunities for students

through sport and physical activity.

From 1 July 2017, the PSC Sport

Leadership program transitioned to a

grants-based funding model. All NSW

secondary schools were sent an

information brochure outlining the

grant application process to support

the program’s delivery in their local

area. The online application required a

minimum of three secondary schools

as part of a Sport Leadership

Community (SLC) to be eligible for the

initial grant: Leading with Action. Each

of these secondary schools could then

apply for a Learning to Lead grant with

a minimum of two partner primary

schools. Both grants run for a 12

month period. The new funding model

provides each SLC with the flexibility

to determine scheduling and sport-

specific options to enhance student

engagement in their local area.

AWARDS AND RECOGNITION

NSW Premier’s Sporting Challenge Student

Medal

In August 2017, a NSW Premier’s Sporting Challenge

Medal was sent to every public school in readiness for

schools’ end-of-year presentation ceremonies.

The student medal enables schools to recognise a student

who has shown tremendous sporting spirit and enthusiasm.

The selected student may not be the best athlete, but is

someone who makes a consistent, conscientious effort in

school sport and is supportive, encouraging and possibly

inspiring in their sporting endeavours.

“Evey is a worthy recipient of the PSC medal. She leads a physically active lifestyle and participates in a variety of school and out of school sporting opportunities, ensuring she

fulfils the required amount of physical activity time each day. She strives to do her best and demonstrates excellent sportsmanship at all times. Evey is a multi-talented sportsperson and is happy to play any position asked of by her teacher or coach in a variety of teams. She is a member of the garden club, a library monitor and is always kind and caring to her friends.”

Congratulations Evelynn from Meadowbank Public School and

to all the 2017 PSC Medal recipients!

and Secondary Sport Challenges, informed schools about competitions and

available professional learning resources and courses, and highlighted key events

and activities throughout the year.

A hard copy of the PSC newsletter was provided to every school and further copies

are available on the PSC website.

Encouragement and Achievement

Awards

A range of encouragement and

achievement certificates were available

throughout the year to assist schools in

maintaining Challenge momentum.

Samples were provided to schools in a

mid-year mail out and additional copies

were available on request, or via

download from the PSC website.

School Facilitator Certificate of Appreciation

The PSC acknowledges the many teachers and principals

who take on the role of Facilitator each year to promote,

engage and enhance the Challenge experience for students

and staff.

In 2017 the certificate was made available to all school

principals by email and as a downloadable pdf on the PSC

website. Principals were then able to acknowledge staff in

their school who had given much of their time to the

implementation of the Challenge.

Student Awards

More than 400,000 personalised NSW Premier’s Primary and Secondary Sport

Challenge Award certificates were distributed to students who completed the 2017

Challenges.

School Awards

Each school received an A3 Award

certificate that reflected its overall

achievement in the 2017 Challenges.

Staff Challenge Awards

9,114 personalised certificates were

distributed across schools and state

offices for the 2017 Staff Challenge.

AMBASSADORS

The PSC Ambassador program expanded this year with a record number of school

visits to become our most successful year to date. The program supports schools

participating in the 10 Week Challenge as well as addressing PDHPE outcomes in

terms of physical activity and healthy eating. Ambassadors discuss the life skills that

sport teaches us, which supports Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) whole

school initiatives.

The 2017 PSC sporting ambassadors included:

Abbey McCulloch Netball

Adam Kellerman Paralympic Wheelchair Tennis

Amy Sommerville Netball

Ash Thomas Hockey

Craig Stevens Swimming

Elysha O'Neill Water Polo

Erik Horrie Paralympic Rowing (2017 World Champion)

Greta Hayes Hockey

Jayme Richardson Paralympic Cycling

Jessica Fox Canoe Slalom

Jo Brigden Jones Sprint Kayaking

Paige Hadley Netball

Sally Bennett Fencing

Susan Pettitt Netball

Tomas Elliott Swimming

“I just wanted to thank you so much for organising our

ambassador school visit. Even with the rain and having

to do the clinic in the hall without a netball ring, the girls

had such a great time.

The talk at our assembly was inspiring and all round it

was such a wonderful experience for everyone.” *

“The PSC Ambassador program is a worthwhile concept

that should be encouraged as it serves to inspire our

students to appreciate the importance of being physically

active, regardless of the level of involvement.” * * PSC Ambassador Program 2017 Teacher Evaluation
